remember meeting Derry at the Knoxville Tennessee Show IN 86 . I had fallen in love with The Big Prize Project . After they opened for 38 Special, My GF and I wandered over to the Hyatt hotel exploring and there was Derry outside his room. He invited us in and let us hear a brand new song he was writing on his acoustic. What a great memory ! and what Talent . that album is still one of my favorite rock albums of all time .
The Big Prize is my all time favorite album. The soundtrack of my college years from ‘86-‘90 when my roommate at Penn State turned me on to this album. I was able to share this album with my daughter, who’s in college and an aspiring rock guitarists. We jammed to this album on a road trip and she was hooked on Honeymoon Suite. Killer guitar work, riffs, lyrics, harmonies and melodies!
This song alone belongs in the top-ten songs that defined the 1980's! What a great song and evolving video to define a great era of music and culture with very talented musicians carrying it along!
This song reminds me of being in Toronto in the late 80's. I enjoyed most of the Canadian bands at that time. I discovered Rush in my High School in Greenock, Scotland, so I had to go to Toronto and see what was what. I still listen to this tune and it takes me right back. The Guitar playing on this track is brilliant. Really great playing which compliments this brilliant song. Thanks Mr Grehan
In my humble opinion, this still is one of the most butt-kicking songs of the 1980s. Mr. Grehan, thank you for showing us your wonderful fretwork. The look on your face here indicates that you still enjoy playing this song as much as I still enjoy listening to it. 🎸
For many of us this brings back so many great memories of our high school or college years. Seeing you enjoying playing it again made this even better. And I have to add, now that I’m learning to play guitar I appreciate your talent SO much more!
I still remember seeing the band in Kamloops, B. C, in 86/87. I remember seeing that design on the guitar, I thought it was so cool! The band rocked that night, so tight ! Even though Johnny was in a cast! 😆
Stellar song with one of the greatest guitar solos ever in my opinion! I started playing guitar when this song was on the radio and I told my guitar teacher I HAD to learn this one. This guitar solo is an absolute blast of adrenaline - LOVE IT!
Man - I don't know what's more awesome. This vid? This song? This band? This guitarist? Or that killer Kramer axe? !!! All cool. It was cool in '85 - '86 when we were rockin' it. And it's still cool. Awesome.
Derry!! Love your music, really makes me happy and I thank you for such dedication and passion. Never have seen you in concert even though I’m fan since first album, hope someday, in te meantime, keep rockin’!
Wow! Just found you. This was greater than you know. You always had the best guitar faces. Not trying to look tough or cool. Just looking so happy and joyful. And this was like having a private concert. The average person could never get close enough to actually see you guys. What a long overdue luxury. Thank you.
Was going to see them in 1992, but the show got canceled. Still don't know why. My brothers and I finally were able to see them in 2023, 31 years later. My only disappointment was they were an opener and their set was way too short. We all had tears in our eyes to finally get this moment. They all seem to have a lot of fun playing live, and they sounded fantastic.
If you had only been 11 years old when their first album came out. I listened to side A in the day and side B before bed. That album will forever make me think of the fall of 1985- hockey season starting and down the road, and on my bike on my way to the neighborhood of the girl I admired looking to find her....
Derry , mil gracias por la música que hacen, gracias por hacer de mi mundo algo con sentido e inspirado en tu forma de tocar la guitarra, gracias por enseñar algo de lo que sabes hacer bien, tocar tu música, mil gracias.
i remember when they first came out with :what does it take...loved that song and even to this day..its why i bought the big prize cassette back in the 80s...such a great album with many good songs that should have gotten more airplay.....feel it again is such a kick ass song and glad Derry showed how to play it..a song i want to learn,,,, thank you Derry
This my 2nd favorite of yours. Wave Babies has always been my #1. Just loved hearing it live in Sherbrooke, Qc last sept. Thanks for these videos 💚 & you should sing your parts more too,.
Such an amazing person!! Thanks for bringing me up properly on the BEST music and lyrics in life!! I may not always rank you #1 but you are only at #2 behind Def Leppard LOL...... you need to tour with them next year when they play in Canada.....Big venue, including outside on Citadel Hill in downtown Halifax NS :) perfect weather and women taking their bra's off too the old great days. Thanks Derry!!
I just saw Honeymoon Suite play the Dartmouth waterfront on Sunday eve. What a fantastic show you guys put on - The set list was hit after hit !!! Honeymoon Suite really has that depth - the set list is banger after banger. I was a fan from the release of the 1st album and have been listening to you since. About 40 years!! And This is the first time I’ve ever seen you perform live!!
Great vid! Nice to see on the intricacies. Saw you live front row at the Amarillo civic auditorium summer of 86 with your solid white Strat. Great show it was!
This made my day. 4 days off work, raining, not much to do except turn on the comp and stumbled upon this. Been a HoneyS fan since back in the day and have always said The Big Prize was a great sounding album, great songs etc...one of my faves for sure among other HS stuff. Killer song, great playing....oh yeah rock on y'all.
Love your band. It's cool you do these videos. Nice to see how how the songs are played for real instead of guessing. Thats going to be impossible for me to replicate.
Well shit. I've been trying to figure out the intro since 1986. Thanks for sharing, Derry! One of the greatest Canadian rock guitarists. Right up there with Kim Mitchel and Rik Emmet.
No doubt, absolutely awesome. Thank you for posting. Not sure how much talent is from very hard work and how much is from natural artistic abilities. I possess very little of both in guitar, however I can see and hear God given talent, and this man has it.
Thank You Derry for sharing this beautiful piece of your guitar work.I loved and admired all of your amazing work with Honeymoon Suite from the very first album. Keep rocking my friend and God bless you!

Derry Grehan: one of the most underrated guitarists from the 80's.
Yes, wholeheartedly agree with that statement
TOTALLY underrated. He also has one of the most recognizable tones of any guitarists from that era til now. It is awesome seeing this.

This was a gateway song for me; it was the first rock song that I really liked; That’s one of my favorite solos ever, too.

Love the intro noises... I recognize a variation on EVH's elephant noise... another super tasty tune - one of the best summer tunes recorded....
What a great solo! I had this on CD, would listen to this and What DoesIt Take just to hear the arpeggio sweeps at the end of the solo. Pure talent! 👍
