Lesley Duncan wrote this one and sings harmony on this track. This is a touching song. I like the simplicity of of the instrumentation, it allows the lyrics to sink in.

I love the background noise of kids playing at the beach. That added a wonderful ambience and a reminder of what pure joy sounds like - such a unique add-on !

Yes... I always thought it was a love song to humanity itself, not a single individual.

When I saw him in concert they did this song and he played the guitar and quipped "I bet you didn't know I played this". He was right.

LOL that's hilarious. Cool to see he has a sense of humor about it!

When I saw him in the early 80's he surprised everyone by playing this song live . It was the only time I've ever seen Elton play guitar (acoustic). Very strange. The crowd was silent but burst out into applause at the end. I think Leslie Duncan was onstage singing as well. A once in a lifetime occurance.

In the early days Elton new how to touch our emotions with his singing and piano playing! This is not the later dat contrived Elton but the raw Elton at his very best!

I didn't get reminded of the Bee Gees while listening to this track but I can see where it could make you think of their harmonies a bit. For me - this one evoked Crosby, Stills, and Nash. The guitar, the harmonies, and just the whole vibe (I hate that word!) of the song.

The guitar is very similar to Dear Prudence off the White Album by The Beatles. Your right Dan.

Check out Feel the Benefit by 10cc ... the start of that song sounds even more like Dear Prudence, I think. And a fantastic song to boot.

The only studio album track that he released in the first 19 years of his career that was not written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin. It was written by Lyndsey Duncan who is also the female vocalist on this track.

Thank you for that info. It explains why this song was different from the rest of the album. I always thought this was one of the most tender and melodically beautiful songs about early love.

    Another nice reaction.
I really liked the BeeGees pre-disco music, just like I love early Elton's tunes... Tuned out both sets of sounds when their diva-ish disco eras unfolded!

Unless I'm listening carelessly, by the third and last lines of the chorus we ultimately have EJ triple-harmonizing plus he is also double tracked on at least some of those...so between four and six of his voices in concert! Very powerful sonic signature in what is otherwise one of his greatest love songs, right along with album-mate Come Down in Time! Great job on the reactions, guys, as always. I just hope Steely Dan Gaucho is coming soon!

    • @SightAfterDark
      @SightAfterDark  3 роки тому +2

@@SightAfterDark That is tremendous news! So I can't remember whether I've already written this to you guys but if I'm repeating you'll forgive me. I'm a sixty-year-old guy who grew up on the music of the 60s and 70s by and large so watching you bathe in this stuff for the first time is literally like me getting in a time machine. It does my soul such good to be sitting alongside you experiencing this music again essentially for the first time. Also I imagine you've watched some of the other reaction channels and while some of them offer some worthy content, many are pretty banal. Between your musicianship and general musical awareness, you always bring so much to the table and in such an enjoyable and digestible way. I'm always looking forward to your next offering. Keep on jammin'! ❤

Some very interesting thoughts about this one. I'd never thought of the Bee Gees comparison, but I totally see it!
I can remember not liking this one at first, probably because it was so guitar-centric, and I definitely favoured the piano (being a piano player myself). It grew on me, though, especially after hearing the live version featured on the Here and There live album.
This song is interesting, in that it's the only song from Elton's classic 1969-1975 albums that wasn't written by either him or Bernie Taupin (though he did release cover versions of songs by The Beatles, John Lennon, and The Who as stand-alone singles during that period). As others have mentioned, British folk singer Lesley Duncan wrote it. She'd been singing backup on Elton's albums, and I guess they decided to record this one for Tumbleweed, though I'm not sure why. Lesley has her own version of "Love Song" on her 1971 album Sing Children Sing, which Elton played piano on. Aside from instrumentals, you wouldn't see another song on an Elton John album that wasn't written by at least one of Elton or Bernie until 1979's disco disaster Victim of Love.

Dear Prudence in a different key. This one really stuck out for my on Tumbleweed Connection, most of the other tunes are more southern fried than beatle fried.

Its not a familiar song from the Beatles. Its just that elton rarely opens a song with a guitar. More often he uses piano for the opening.
