Well, that's just what happens when your parents don't let you watch TV. I remember I first saw an episode while I was on a road trip with my parents (only got to watch TV in motels). I just got a quick look at Katara and Aang running along a wall at night or something (either from season 1 or 2), and then I changed the channel so that my parents wouldn't know I was interested in watching a "dumb" cartoon. Next time I watched it was at a friend's house. She had the DVDs for season 1 and maybe 2 (I don't remember if season 3 was out yet), and my mom told her mom, "You really let her watch that?" Anyhow, I'm glad I was at least able to watch half of season 1 then. Finally looked it up and watched everything once I got access to the internet.
