In order to do it like this, you need to wet it in sections and suck out the moisture right away. By wetting all of it first, you’re allowing the moisture to soak deep into the carpet and into the pad and possibly wood underneath. Microfiber mops work best, but sponge mops do too (although you're going to have fun getting all that fur back out of the mops) The mop can't be even the slightest bit drippy- just damp all the way through & I usually only use older mop heads that are close to being trashed, but it works great in between steam cleans & shampoos. Thankfully I have all hardwood & tile now, but mops are still better than brooms & even vacuums at getting dust and pet fur up quickly & efficiently and aren't as wasteful as Swiffer type stuff. (Reusable & washable dust mops work great too, of course. And damp microfiber rags are fabulous for getting pet fur out of furniture too.)
I see all these comments on what to do, and I disagree with most of them. As an insurance assessor and reinstatement manager, my recommendation is 1. Rip carpet up and dispose of the underlay and then either a. Treat floor and replace underlay then reinstate carpet or b. (What I’d do) rip the lot up and get rid of it - there is NO WAY you’ll ever be permanently rid of the smell. It will have soaked into the base boards/concrete and unless you have professionals destroying the odour in the floor itself, and replacing coverings, you’ll be forever unhappy

A lot of apartments don't have carpet anymore, and I'm so happy about that. A basement is probably not going to have enough air circulation to have a carpet that's not going to mold or mildew after cleaning without a dehumidifier.
My grandmother used to vacuum her carpets throughout the house and then go over them with a damp cloth with Lysol. Her house was the cleanest house I have ever been in.
you need some sort of spinning brush to clean the depths of the carpet. They make attachments but it might be easier to just buy a trash vacuum. You can also rent carpet cleaners for like $100 a day
You can also just rent the vacuum from most grocery stores my local CVS rents out the Rug Doctor vacuum or you could buy the Hoover SmartWash Automatic Carpet Cleaner, recently bought one and the things a champ at pulling up all the built up dirt and odors. Plus the shampoo they sell with the vacuum has a really nice and fresh smelling scent when you’re done.

Side tangent, as someone who lives in a country without basements, thats a cool looking basement with the rooms. Decent sized for whatever you'd wanna put down there. Kinda wish that we had them in NZ
Hi 👋🏼 professional carpet cleaner here, the first mistake was using carpet soap, I assume what you are referring to is the soap that’s for portable cleaners. Soap actually attracts dirt as the residue is still in the carpet. The chemical carpet cleaners use is typically enzyme based (especially in the case of pets in the house) so the best route would be to call a professional. You can however do it yourself with a portable, instead of the soap use 3 part water 1 part white distilled vinegar. For any biological spots, blood urine etc. use natures miracle.
Now it is alive. All the billions of microbes came to life. I will tell you what a professional shampoo guy working at the detail section of the carwash told me. You got to get the water out fast as you are spraying it in, really fast so it will not go too deep in there and get stuck. The machine is powerful and it is all about the shape and siz of the sucker attachment. So the liquid sprays out under the sucker and the sucker is pulling the liquid bacl out immediately. That is the key, pull it out immediately. We just bought a small system for under $100 for cars and it works great, but too small for floors. Some stores rent the big ones for under $100 try it
Hey man, we’ve all done it 😂 I bought an upholstery cleaner that works well n carpet for a couple hundred bucks a few years ago and still bust it out to do my couch, chairs, bedroom carpets and truck interior pretty regularly. It’s just one of those things you buy and are surprised by how useful it is.
You could possibly rent one from a hardware store or maybe even the library (our city libraries let you borrow power tools and whatnot, wouldnt be surprised if they had something like a carpet cleaner tbh)
Calling your local chem dry is the healthiest, safest, and most effective method for a clean carpet! ♡ Other methods push water/steam deep into the fiber and into the padding underneath. It may seem like a good result to the eye but underneath the damage is being done.
I've discovered Lemon scented Pine Sol works really well in the laundry -including cat pee (1cup per load). I'm going to try it in the steam cleaner to clean the upholstry in the car. I imagine it'd work well on carpet, too. Odoban didn't kill the smells in my laundry, even after repeated washes.

This is why your house smells like wet dog
I was going to say that you can mop a carpet. But not soak mop and you have to use the right shampoos also.
Just give up and get new carpet. God knows what’s soaked in that old nasty stuff that’s not worth saving tbh
Add a fabric conditioner that will make it smell good you buy in laundry detergent section
That's quite the paint scheme you've got going on there, dude.
“Don’t call me an idiot yet.” No, son… that’s exactly where the idiocracy began.
Yes, the wall colour fits you well.
Why does everybody criticize everything this man does
I love how you perfectly explained and showed what you were doing and everyone still couldn't put it together.... Or, I guess, people don't know what wetvacs are for...
We’re growing mold instead of algae with this one 😂
the pink and blue wallls are sooo sick. hesr me out: cow print rugs for that hallway
LMAOOOOOO I LOVE YOU FOR THAT MAN
This is a great example of thinking outside the box 👏🏽
looks clean
That is a huge basement!😮
Wow I mean wow just wow 🫤. Just like I don't know what to say just wow like I'm flabbergasted. I can't express what I'm feeling or how this made me feel 😔
Cleanly? Do you mean clean?
Luke set you out some dehumidifiers it will help.
An upholstery freshener might do the job like Febreeze for example to help get rid of the stench, it might help. 😊
😂😂😂 appreciate the honesty….
The impending doom of "don't call me an idiot... yet" was palpable.
This is an amazing unintentional ad for professional carpet services 😅
woah those are some neon pink walls
Not surprised your using craftman
The real crime here is walking on wet carpet with socks on. Nothing worse than wet socks.
Alright time to hire stanley steamer 😂
Well. At least you have a very nice shade of pink on your walls.
A lot of apartments don't have carpet anymore, and I'm so happy about that. A basement is probably not going to have enough air circulation to have a carpet that's not going to mold or mildew after cleaning without a dehumidifier.
Can we just take a moment to talk about how awesome that basement is? How many people have a finished basement.
Haha when you shut off my rug vacuum its sounds like a plane dying down xD insane suction on those things .
Bro you rent one for a day for like $20-40, with cleaner, from Lowes, Home depot, menards etc
Ive seen someone vacuum their lawn before
Buddy gots one of them mops from work 😂
I think it's hilarious how he says, don't call me an idiot and then goes into specific details of why he should be called an idiot.
You better open some windows and start running some big fans to air it out and dry that carpet quickly
Id reccomend to do it by small sections to not let it soak and dry. Mop a section and vacuum it.
Plus the shampoo they sell with the vacuum has a really nice and fresh smelling scent when you’re done.
.....u need a wet or a wet/dry filter for the shop vac ...the one that comes with it is normally dry only ....the dry filter gets wet and will stop pulling as much water ....I appreciate the honesty...its the best way to learn..
Some stores rent the big ones for under $100 try it
"don't call me an idiot yet"... I mean... mopping the whole entire carpet without a way to remove the moisture was the problem my guy lol
