I married in 1976 and received this as a gift from my in-laws. I had no idea about the ice cream maker, but I do have all the pieces you have shown except the juicer. I have more buttons across the bottom on mine and mine is "Avocado Green!" When I pull it out, my grown children roll on the floor with laughter! "You still have that old thing? I can't believe that thing still works!" I remind them of how many loaves of banana nut bread they have eaten and how many peanut butter shakes it has made etc. I will tell you this Kevin, it has lasted longer than that marriage did! Work horse and conversation piece!

I got married in 1968 and my mom got me a Oster kitchen center with the following attachments-food processor, ice cream maker, meat grinder, sausage stuffer, blender, and three glass bowls, one large and two small. I’ve made a lot of bread using the dough hook and loved it.

In the 1950s and beyond there was this contraption called the NuTone Food Center with a power unit that was installed in your countertop. My uncle, a gadget guru if there ever was one, had one in his 1957 house that never changed. It did a lot of the same things--mixed, sharpened knives, blended, grated, juiced, food processed, etc. The bowl had a tube in the middle and the beater connected though the tube and sat down in the bowl, which turned. My aunt was no cook, so it sat largely unused. Thanks for showing us the Oster. The bowl looks a lot like a Sunbeam bowl. You can try one of those and see if it fits.

    • @cavalcadeoffood
      @cavalcadeoffood  Рік тому +3

Hi Jonathan - I've seen a number of those built in NuTone machines. You needed a cupboard just for all the attachments - it performed a lot of tasks. They had very good heavy-duty motors in them. By the time this Oster was made, Sunbeam and Oster were the same company, so I'm guessing the bowls would be interchangeable. Thanks!

I bought mine new in 77 along with many accessories including the ice crusher, a large size unit for processing (similar to other brands), the ice creamer, a glass and plastic blender jar and the smaller coffee grinder jars, a crinkle cutter blade, an extra thick cutter (along with the standard 4pc set), 2 blade storage racks, 3 different dough hook designed pieces, both glass bowls, a dust cover and more. Love it. Still use it almost every day - still going strong; a real work-horse. We use the french-fry cutter and the shredder blades the most of the salad unit. The meat grinder has both large and small grinding interchangeable blades, along with a wrench for tightening the connector. There is also a unit for making various size and shapes of homemade pasta noodles. It all cleans up very quick and easy. Ice cream is wonderful - you'll enjoy it. And to use the juicer, the collar is not removable, you have to use the bottom half of the salad maker base (the shute top is a separate unit). If I could attach a picture for you I would. I have lived in 6 states since it was purchased and it packs and moves easily - never broke. Kudos to Oster for making a quality product. AND by-the-way, kudos to you too for showcasing this outstanding vintage appliance. I love your show and your store! Wish I lived closer to you so I could shop there.

I bought the entire kitchen center on eBay and just made chocolate ice cream yesterday for the first time. It's so easy and fast and it's delish! I also use it almost every week to knead my bread dough, it's fabulous and done in 10 min. I've used to small containers to make baby food and to grind coffee. This made me discover that most glass containers have a standard opening size, so now I use a tall mason jar to make smoothies, so I can drink from that instead of pouring from the blender into a proper glass (it's like a nutri-bullet!). Use the citrus juicer all the time. Tried the pasta maker but didn't do so well on that one (I welcome tips!). Have used the food processor also. Don't use the slicer so much but it works great also. Love this appliance and having just one motor for everything; it's a major space saver and just plain fun. I also love that it's still working decades later! 🎉

I bought my own KitchenAid about 25 years ago and it's still going strong. I've collected a few of the attachments, too, including the ice cream maker. I had one of the earlier ones that I gave to my sister. My husband bought me a new one in the early 90s. I LOVED the salad shooter for making soup. When it broke, (I think the switch was bad) I went on ebay and bought 2 more. Some people were intimidated by all the parts so it was easy to find unused ones online. I still prefer it and my 1979 Mixmaster to my kitchenaid. I only use the kitchen aid for bread baking and I usually don't even use it for that. The icecream maker was the first thing to break. I love the mixers that the bowl turns. I'm not sure if you can find them anymore.

Have had my Oster Center since the late 70's. Many, Many, Many hours of use right up until this day. Think I'll bring the ice cream maker back out for my grandkids...it was the highlight of my son's week to make a different flavor every week! I can remember having crushed ice before refrigerators started doing it. It's my go to for coleslaw. Can remember a long time ago using pint jars, or 1/2 pints, with the blender blade screwed on to make baby food. In all these years I have barely had the need for another counter appliance, except a toaster and can opener (didn't know they came with one of those!) And it is all stored in one drawer very conveniently. Don't know what I'll do when the base dies....give up cooking and baking I guess 😂

Currently listening to the 101 Strings episode of the Cavalcade Radio Hour... starring the ever dynamic KP Gerrard!! 😊😊
You'll have to explain the origin of that moniker. Does Ralph have a stage name too?
    Very interesting show... very relaxing.

I think I’m a little in denial that an appliance I bought new is considered vintage LOL.
I graduated from college in 1981, and my first purchases were a used car, a microwave, and an Oster Kitchen Center. My Kitchen center looks just like yours - push buttons, almond color. I mostly used the mixer (once in a while for bread dough), and the salad shooter.
Some years later I bought a pasta maker attachment but that only got used 1 times because as it processed I could tell the motor was working too hard and started to smell like it was overheating. I didn’t experiment with trying again out of concern of risk for damaging the motor.

Hi ehynes - thanks for sharing your Oster Kitchen Center story! Sounds like you have the same model. Yes, all the things we grew up with are now "vintage" or some youngsters even call them "antique!"

Kevin, great job on the video! This was so interesting. Thanks for demonstrating the features. Summer is almost here, and I’m so excited! I’ll be making some homemade ice cream, too, hopefully, with some older electric machines I have collected. I now have 3! One year I made 2 different flavors at one time for my son’s birthday.

The food processer attachment looked like an air popcorn popper from the same era! Yes, everything went plastic in the 70's. To me, it seemed to start in '67 with the GM dashboards (car guy here) The appliances of the 50's/60's were more robust and built to last!
I miss Ralph! Enjoyed as always

Hi allenwayne - I can see how the food processor looks like an old air popper! The use of plastic really increased during the 70's and continues to this day. I remember some cars when I was a kid that had metal dashboards! Thanks!

Mum gave me hers when she moved into a retirement center. I don't have the juicer or can opener and as a vegetarian I don't have much use for the meat grinder, but I use all the rest of it. Carrot cake? No problem - it takes five minutes, max. We buy Parmesan cheese and grate it ourselves. Smoothies? Coming right up. The only drawback I've ever found is that you can't use the mixer away from the base.

I have this unit with all the standard attachments .. my unit is pristine /a gift in the very early 80’s .. use now and again, but do not have counter space -- so a pain to take out at times…. my mixer and bowl does not make any noise .. I suggest you have the wrong bowl for your mixer .. these are available on kijiji, or amazon or even at oster ….
