I have have been trying to get that out of this world RAW tone for 30 something Fng years and he did it in 1978??It's depressing lol !!!That's why he will always be the KING in my opinion!! The GOAT!! That man changed my life when VH1 came out. RIP
This actually isn't isolated with any software, this is the actual guitar track from the studio before it was put in the mix. Also if you listen closely at the very end of the video, you can hear i think Ted Templeman talking.
And it would've meant even that much less. 40 years ago, sans "technology," a modicum of talent and an ear were necessary to ape this stuff - and it meant something when you pulled it off. Today it's merely TikTok fodder for a generation with a collective attention span measured in seconds. Next!
Ed left so kinds of mistakes on tracks if you've listened to full isolated albums. He even copped to leaving little glitches in if the take was smoking
Greatest rock guitar player of all time. He just had his own sound and rarely played power chords in the rock genre. Unheard of! The Odin of guitarists.
This picture gets funnier the longer you look at it. The beer cans all over the studio floor. Dave's two different shoes. The fire extinguisher on the drumset.
It was nearly thirty years ago when the Beatles Anthology was released and it made me a Beatles fan. It had alternate and incomplete takes, demos and live recordings. VH needs something comparable with liner notes and essays by band members and those who worked with them. I’d buy that, for sure.
AVH is taking that to the grave, I think, mostly out of spite. That, or WVH will release it with his notes and stories without Dave, Micheal, or Sammy. Like anybody will care about that. Welcome to the family Van Halen.
I’ve always loved this song just for Eddie’s guitar work, but have never heard it like this. This is my first time hearing it and I’m literally in awe, in tears. Holy goosebumps! Absolutely fucking AMAZING. God, Eddie was incredible. RIP EVH. Thank you for sharing your music and talent with the world.
⭕️ 2 things : 3:16 This is AMAZING to hear like this‼️ Kinda makes you impressed HOW PERFECT Dave pulls off the perfect MATCH of lyrics to this! I don’t think anybody could write a BETTER song to this music right now ! somebody try to see if it goes better than what Roth put together NO WAY!
So like everyone I've chased that tone for years ......thing is , I've had that tone with multiple different setups . What I couldn't get is the tone you hear after mixing on the records , the right amount of delay , the right amount and tone of reverb etc that's the hard part . The dry sound has always been the easy part .
The riff that launched a thousand RATTs and Dokkens. Don't ever forget, folks, if it weren't for Donn Landee's engineering chops (mic choices/placements, tape machine settings, outboard mix gear choices, etc) Ed would have sounded only 90% super hero.
Very cool . I had a faulty stereo that isolated tracks on some albums , it gives you a whole new perspective on the songs . Great channel thanks . CAMCURSE
Live he always did the stomp pedal dance, which may be the way this was recorded. It's one single pass (take) beginning to end. Nobody does that anymore. Heck, only elite jazz musicians did it back then!
He’s stomping the flanger on and off during that part. It’s all one guitar take. No dubs (which would’ve been easier). Eddie liked to always play as live as possible, even in the studio. The rest of us mere humans usually overdub and use multiple tracks.
The “rate” of swoop on the flanger is set to the tempo of the song more or less. So at the end of a measure, the swoop goes back up. It’s not tricky but he really had it set in the sweet spot. The EVH Flanger pedal by MXR has that mode preset with a switch. I’m guessing that the flanger is always running but gets kicked in when he steps on it. I’ve seen him live a few times and he steps on pedals for just a few notes or a phrase sometimes. Master of all guitar stuff he was.
im not sure.. but i think hes just scratching up and then down the top end of the bottom string..thats how i tried it but im not sure it was so flanged...
The setting on that phasor had to be perfect, I wonder how long it took him to get the up down perfect with the rhythm. And back in the day when this was on the ground in a pedal I wonder how much work was between songs to set it up for say Atomic Punk... Or did he have several. No solo either.... Eddie making a point. "It's the Song Stupid".
Somebody give those guys a broom, dustpan and a few trash bags and tell them to clean up those empty beer cans for God's sake! It must smell like a brewery in there! LOL!

Well, is a typical chord movement I-IV used in thousands of riff-based songs. Probably before Stones, Motown music used it already or in early blues guitar alternate tunnings that allowed easier fingering, as keith Richards figured out. Could be more plausible in Kiss "Rock & Roll All Nite" ?. Not a rip off per se

I still can’t wrap my head around a 24 year old kid being this incredibly talented and imaginative with this guitar parts. It’s uncanny.
He started a lot earlier than that. 24 was old for a rock musician then. I get what you're saying though.
In 1981 EVH was 26 yrs old!
Birth Date; January 26, 1955
Fair Warning was released April 29, 1981
he wrote it on piano is why. Understand the playing is so outside the box because it was wrote on a piano
At the very end you can hear Eddie say something like, “I think that beat the other take. That was really solid”. Wise words from the King himself.
That’s not Ed
@@MontourR any idea who it is?

Can a guitar player explain how he got the guitar effect (Flanger?) to alternate between ascending and descending on the chorus riff?

Wow he must be using a super light pick, not much attack on the low e string for the main riff, makes it blend seamlessly with the main chords
I would disagree, he hits the strings HARD...
He did use a light nylon pick but he did attack the strings.
EVH was using a "D-Tuna" for this song, not an E-string
He might have started using a.040 string at this time, he was always using different stuff, you can totally here this is not a green back speaker
Noo no no ! You are all Wrong! He played this withoud any Strings !😳😜
were all these tracks released somewhere?

"Come on, Dave. Gimmie a break."
Eddie plays it just like me!
my mom and dad didn't know they were VH fans until the 3rd time in rotation.....
So weird to hear this without any echo or reverb
no slop on the guitar but plenty of slob on the rehearsal space. just sayin. Rock on!
That's the rythmn track. Shows you the other side of Ed.
Another old timer here. I don't think this is a flange. I think he's doing that with his pick moving it up-and-down the string...
Sounds like a metal pick.
