    The Plymouth GTX was introduced as the top of the line Belvedere, and Richard Petty won the Grand National championship in NASCAR in a Belvedere. The new LA-style lightweight 318 engine was introduced for this year and would remain available on the Belvedere through its life.
    In 1968, the line was restyled with a roofline changed to follow the Charger, standard flip-out rear quarter windows (that would also be used in 1969), and "Coke bottle styling."
    The Belvedere name was dropped at the end of the 1970 model year, replaced by the Plymouth Satellite name originally reserved for higher-end Belvederes. The Satellite itself lasted only through 1974; starting in 1975, the car was renamed Plymouth Fury, and the longer-wheelbase Plymouth Fury became the Gran Fury.

    Absolutely a gorgeous car. I would love to be the owner, what a thrill. Adam 12 was one of my favorite shows as a kid and I still watch episodes when I can now.

    2019 is Los Angeles Police Department’s 150th Anniversary. This 1969 Plymouth Belvedere in this video also celebrating its 50th Anniversary. It’s a beautiful and memorable LAPD black and white police car that represents the history of LAPD in 1969 with the door decals “to protect and to serve”. Memorable police car still driving on the streets of the City of Los Angeles representing the Los Angeles Police Department and Adam 12 police show.

      After an overnight rainstorm, at start of DAY watch it was not surprising to see a couple of officers holding the brakes down and spinning the back tires in place, literally spinning a half dozen donuts upon the release of the brakes. Often times Motor Cops, who road their motors to work, teamed up to work a police car when the streets too wet to safely ride their motorcycles. One day I was motioned over to their police car. Not known to me they had turned the windshield cleaner spray nozzle which hit me between the eyes. I knew right then and there I wanted to be one. Sadly, it didn't happen. Best it didn't, which allowed me to spend the next 40 years on the job.

    Really neat recreation. Even the 360 horn ring that would activate the siren when the siren switch was in the "manual" position. What few people know is that LAPD ordered the black and whites from Plymouth in 1968-69 with a rear sway bar. No other Chysler B-body, not even the Road Runner had a rear sway bar. Also, LAPD black and whites were ordered with drum brakes all the way around in 1968. Not sure about 1969. I know this, I loved the 1968-69 Belvederes. Four door Road Runners and I was getting paid to drive them.

      Question? I thought the "anti -sway bars" (tortion bar suspension) were located on the undercarriage under both left and right front doors of the vehicle. My dad busted the the tortion bar under the driver's side door, on his 57" Dodge Lancer. He bought a used replacement one at the local wrecking yard. Several months later that side of his car dropped nearly to the ground. The anti-sway bars (left and right) are not interchangeable but manufactured (sprung) in opposite directions. He had to go back to the wrecking and buy the other one. Thanks for reminding me of the old days.

    • @h8troodoh
      @h8troodoh Рік тому

      @jimungari4640 anti sway bar is exactly that.. torsion bar is a type of spring,it's job is to suspend the vehicle as a coil or leaf spring would.. anti sway is just for body roll control in cornering not suspension.

    The siren sound effect that was dubbed in for the Adam-12 patrol car was a recording of a mid-1960s Federal PA20 electronic siren. The PA20 has wail, yelp, and alert tones and was in production from about 1962 to 1966.

    With all due respects Mr. Claringbold I am old enough to have watched the show when it was originally aired on TV, collected & restored police cars since 1987 & volunteered at the LA Police Museum so I think I know a thing or two about the subject. Watch Season 1-3 of 'ADAM-12' & if you see a different 'shop' number other than '80817' on the '68-69 Plymouth Belvederes that Malloy & Reed are driving then I will meet you at LAPD Headquarters to give you a LAPD badge, Roger that?

      @@donniedotson3318 And the Belvedere I bought in California from a retired LAPD captain had the rear door lock knobs removed and the threaded part well out of reach of adult fingers, the rear handles were removed too and he said that's just what the motorpool guys did after too many perps simply got out and ran, lol. Now all it is, is a child safety lock on the inner door skin near the wheel opening contour that you can flip on or off, I still love the Vics though.

      And those VHF-Hi Band radios worked a hellava lot better than the UHF 460 and 800 bands of today. The radio waves could penetrate highrises and concrete buildings where the UHF had great difficulty even with repeaters and towers all around. I know from experience because I've used all three.

      2008ljr Mostly Plymouth Furys and Dodge Monacos, LAPD had a large number of AMC Matadors. The 78 Ford LTD II has to qualify as the worst cop car I ever saw. The 79 Malibu 350 and 76-78 Nova 350's were the best for their time.

      72Disco1998 I don't recall any specific problems with the brakes other than the simple fact such a massive and heavy car was difficult to stop. They had huge long hoods and a small passenger compartment, you had to allow for the hood length when driving one in heavy traffic.
