What a thoughtless comment. Whether or not people are discriminated against can be seen through statistics and simple logic. It's impossible to get rid of cultural racism but institutional racism on the whole simply doesn't exist. That's not to say black people aren't marginalized but that's got nothing to do with racism and everything to do with class.

The guy who was talking about the lack of history taught in english schools about their own history is so right! I'm a 17 year ols german boy (sorry for my english) and I do very often think that we learn a lot more than some other countries about their history, I'm really scared bc of that!
I am also from Germany and I can tell you Germany also has that same problem...because we don't learn about German's colonial history and how much of an impact that had on those countries.
@Robert Gray i have spoken to multiple British people and have informed myself on what they are taught. They are not taught as much about british colonialism and the severity of the atrocities the british empire committed.

I don't know where you went to school, but that was pretty much all we were taught about in history. Everything we were taught was through an anti western lens. What we were never taught in school was basic economics, how to understand data or the evils carried out by other peoples of the world; such as the Arab, Ottoman or Barbary slave trades. Nor were we ever taught about the Western ideals borne out of the enlightenment and the revolutions it spawned, and that it was these Western values that led to the abolition of slavery for the first time in history the World over. Or how the British Navy blockaded port to stop the slave trade in the aforementioned Arab, Ottoman and Barbary states.

Having lived and traveled in many countries around the world including the UK, I would have to say unfortunately England is one of the most racist place I've been too. It's kind of sad though, as most people you meet are pretty nice to you, but that 5% of the racist population you meet makes such an impact on how you perceive the place. I've always wondered if the suppression of emotion causes you to turn racist ? I suppose it's very complex. However, I feel the most important part is to even acknowledge that racism exists - which is happening now. At times when I talk about racism, most of my friends brush it off and that makes you wonder if something is wrong with yourself.
You obviously haven't been to that many places. An Indian worker at my UK based firm was ignored when he went to complete a project in Japan - they simply wouldn't work with him . The Chinese, Korean.s and Japanese all look down on Indians and they are not the only ones. Many in that region view Indians ( with some justification) as backward primitive people.

The lack of diversity of opinion is worrying. There were some examples of symptoms (lack of black managers, statistics in health care) but no clear evidence of structural racism. How can we be sure the situation isnt more complex? How many young black people are having the same opportunities in their development (good education, stable and supportive family, culture, family wealth, safe and pleasant surroundings , peer group etc) I would argue boring born black you are less likely to be born with the same opportunities as a white person due these factors which will then lead to the skewed statistics in outcomes. Inequality of opportunity is a complex issue and one we should all strive to fix. It's too easy just to say structural racism. We should be talking about how we can improve equality of opportunity and life for young black lives.

When I was arrested and charged, I was denied bail and told by my lawyers that if I did not plead guilty I could be sitting in jail waiting longer for a trial date than the amount of time that they were seeking and that I could be given twice the amount of time or more for not taking "responsibility " if found guilty at trial. I pled guilty knowing I was innocent because I did not want to deal with the stress, fear, frustration, malice, or the confusion caused by systemic racism. I pled guilty knowing that Elizabeth May Terry (lizzie terry) made false allegations in order to steal twenty-three thousand dollars of furniture and electronics from me in retaliation for cheating with her sister As a victim of systemic racism you do not committ crimes, you just suffer the consequences of crimes like an innocent bystander. Systemic racism made me the victim look like the criminal and the actual criminal look like the victim. Even when you tell the truth they will make you out to to be the liar and then make the actual liar out to be the one telling the truth. They will pick sides without knowing the truth or without seeking the truth, and then concoct or make whatever side they think they can make look like the truth. Everything you say or do they use against you especially in the court of law where everyone in positions of authority are white or have to answer directly or indirectly to someone white. That's white supremacy. Racism, that has been perfected and systematized. I do not need anyone to tell me that I'm innocent when I know that I am innocent. The video proves I'm innocent. There was a time when us black Americans thought that Great Britain didn’t have racial problems that existed in America; how naive we have been! In my opinion; the blacks living in Great Britain would be better off living in the United States because they would have better employment opportunities; and educational opportunities; they should seriously consider migrating to the United States one day!
The sad reality is that racism exists in every white/ ethnic European ancestral nation. The only reason why the US seems to stand out in this regard, is because the population of black people in the states is much higher than in any European nation. 13% of the US pop is black vs. 3.5% of the pop. in UK. At almost 40 million people, blacks in the states collectively form a greater voice that can call out racism and is more difficult to silence by the white majority. It's time European countries stop asking whether racism exists. A basic history lesson informs otherwise.

A lot of white people are asking what they can do to prevent racism. In the UK, we need an education system that teaches about the horrors of the British Empire and highlights the fact that our power and privilege stems largely from the fact that we overran countries in distant places and enslaved people for our benefit. Even under this current government, we have seen the Windrush scandal in which people were denied their citizenship rights after decades of living in the UK, and a tower block burnt down in a predominantly BME neighbourhood killing many. There has also been a number of incidents over the years where young men have been killed on the basis of their skin colour. To rectify this issue, we need to face up to our history. Let's not glorify our imperialism, but take a stand against systemic racism and address the horrifying legacy of the British Empire.

Oh because race is more important to you than justice. I hear you, I support that you want justice for someone who was killed but why reduce it to a tool to undermine justice for someone else? Still major problems here in UK with consumer racial profiling. I am black Brit and I was ejected and banned from local supermarket. No reason given. When I complained to Corporate, the response was that staff caught me stealing $300 worth of liquor. Security camera footage shows that this didn’t happen. They also alleged I was suspicious because I didn’t use a shopping cart, yet many shoppers don’t use cart. They also said I was suspicious because I was only selecting a few items, yet many in UK use supermarket for only a few items. They claimed I was aggressive to staff, yet security footage shows I wasn’t. Legal action is pending.
I'm black too and have not experianced any form of systemic racism in the UK. You get the odd bigot but there certainly isn't a systemic form of racism in this country.

In my experience i can say with certainty that Britain is a very racist country. Racism takes many shapes and forms and in Britain “in direct” , “constitutional” “subtle’ racism is everywhere from my work place to the high street and even in my neighbourhood! Those White people who are racist might not directly spit on your face, beat you or insult you, but BAME people are always looked at in a negative way and treated as a second class citizen in all sections of the british society.

Racism is rife in the UK - especially in employment practices. A British (white) person will never get a job in NHS, gov't, local authorities , police, fire service and even the BBC unless he/she is much more qualified than a BAME. 40% of the workers in the NHS are BAME i.e. British people actively descrimated against and are grossly under-represented in most, if not all tax funded gov't agencies, BBC and many other. Native British boys neglected in the classroom by teachers brainwashed into 'diversity' and 'multy-kult' propaganda and made to feel guilty for their ancestors. I don't know where you went to school, but that was pretty much all we were taught about in history. Everything we were taught was through an anti western lens.
What we were never taught in school was basic economics, how to understand data or the evils carried out by other peoples of the world; such as the Arab, Ottoman or Barbary slave trades.
Nor were we ever taught about the Western ideals borne out of the enlightenment and the revolutions it spawned, and that it was these Western values that led to the abolition of slavery for the first time in history the World over. Or how the British Navy blockaded port to stop the slave trade in the aforementioned Arab, Ottoman and Barbary states.

Having lived and traveled in many countries around the world including the UK, I would have to say unfortunately England is one of the most racist place I've been too. It's kind of sad though, as most people you meet are pretty nice to you, but that 5% of the racist population you meet makes such an impact on how you perceive the place. I've always wondered if the suppression of emotion causes you to turn racist ? I suppose it's very complex. However, I feel the most important part is to even acknowledge that racism exists - which is happening now. At times when I talk about racism, most of my friends brush it off and that makes you wonder if something is wrong with yourself.

The lack of diversity of opinion is worrying. There were some examples of symptoms (lack of black managers, statistics in health care) but no clear evidence of structural racism. How can we be sure the situation isnt more complex? How many young black people are having the same opportunities in their development (good education, stable and supportive family, culture, family wealth, safe and pleasant surroundings , peer group etc) I would argue boring born black you are less likely to be born with the same opportunities as a white person due these factors which will then lead to the skewed statistics in outcomes. Inequality of opportunity is a complex issue and one we should all strive to fix. It's too easy just to say structural racism. We should be talking about how we can improve equality of opportunity and life for young black lives.

In the UK, we need an education system that teaches about the horrors of the British Empire and highlights the fact that our power and privilege stems largely from the fact that we overran countries in distant places and enslaved people for our benefit. Even under this current government, we have seen the Windrush scandal in which people were denied their citizenship rights after decades of living in the UK, and a tower block burnt down in a predominantly BME neighbourhood killing many. There has also been a number of incidents over the years where young men have been killed on the basis of their skin colour. To rectify this issue, we need to face up to our history. Let's not glorify our imperialism, but take a stand against systemic racism and address the horrifying legacy of the British Empire.

Still major problems here in UK with consumer racial profiling. I am black Brit and I was ejected and banned from local supermarket. No reason given. When I complained to Corporate, the response was that staff caught me stealing $300 worth of liquor. Security camera footage shows that this didn’t happen. They also alleged I was suspicious because I didn’t use a shopping cart, yet many shoppers don’t use cart. They also said I was suspicious because I was only selecting a few items, yet many in UK use supermarket for only a few items. They claimed I was aggressive to staff, yet security footage shows I wasn’t. Legal action is pending.

In my experience i can say with certainty that Britain is a very racist country. A British (white) person will never get a job in NHS, gov't, local authorities , police, fire service and even the BBC unless he/she is much more qualified than a BAME. 40% of the workers in the NHS are BAME i.e. British people actively descrimated against and are grossly under-represented in most, if not all tax funded gov't agencies, BBC and many other.

Shelley Philcox yes Shelley you are absolutely right! Failures in police refusing to arrest, CPS refusing to prosecute and social services being silent are all signs of institutional racism. This happens all the time in cases involving black victims, Belly Mujinga, Shukri Abdi, Trevor Belle, Victoria Climbié, Stephen Lawrence, Anthony Walker. There’s more, but these are examples of how the police, CPS and others are institutionally racist against black people and ignore crimes against black people continuously. It isn’t racism to ignore white girls being groomed, it’s very very bad policing (Edit: which the black lives matter movement are very vocal about, they don't just care about black people dying but every single case of the police being absolutely useless at their job and also abusing it)
