For anyone being inspired: Please be considerate of a cat's back when making one; the wheel's diameter should be big enough so that your cat's back won't be arched while running. Otherwise they might injure their back!
what is a good diameter ?
@@oldfishi it depends on how big your cat is, your cats back should not arch when they walk or run.
Ideally it will be at least 120cm ø
I've read the inner diameter should be 1.5 x the length of the cat.@@oldfishi

NoLi - you are a master. I love your videos and this one especially. Even if I didn't have 2 cats I would be watching. I know a Amish man who does wonderful woodworking and am hoping to present this plan in order that I have him make me one of these. The reviews of the ones on the market basically state "don't waste your $$". I appreciate that you included demos on how to get kitties interested in the contraption! Master Cat Toy Creator - NoLi! Thank you for the plan and demos.
If you have a router, make a cheap circle cutting jig from some scrap MDF. In mine, I made a 1/4 groove and used 2 layers of 1/8th hardboard glued together. This was faster and easier than gluing screwing all the individual boards and it creates a perfect circle. Hardboard is extremely flexible. All in, $54 for 3/4th 1 sheet of MDF, $14 for 1 sheet of 1/8 hardboard, $17 for longboard wheels/bearings and < $20 for other various hardware/glue. You can make a simple stand with less than two 2x4's. All in you can easily make one of these for $100 + time. Better quality than a commercially available one. From what I've seen the $150 ones are junk and only start to get okay at $350 up to $600. There's a lot of comments saying its cheaper and better to buy, but I'd disagree if you have even just a couple basic tools.

Totally need to do this. My cat needs the work out.
Only change I'd make would be putting screws thru washers to help distribute the force on the carpet, but that is better than anything I could make.

I love it I think it looks very cool. if I were to use that design, the only thing I would change is I wouldn’t leave gap’s in the carpet. I think by leaving gap’s in the carpet it makes it more difficult because they’re concentrating on missing that gap instead of concentrating on running full out.

Your video and above 120 cm diameter comment is helpful. If I were to make this, I can see that making the base might be problematic. What are the dimensions of the base and how did you cut the arc in the base so that all four (4) of the caster wheels will work together on the cat running barrel?
Instead of making it for my cats, I might just make it for myself.:)

oh, and the rings you can buy at pottery barn...
for the amount of money spent on that (not to mention time) you could just buy a pre-made one. It would roll more smoothly and not have gaps in the carpet/surface.
Yes you are right. Pre-made product quality will be better and the price will not be much expensive. I Recommend for those who have extra wood or want a special size catwheel.

How about changing wood planks for something like pvc? If you heat pvc you can make perfect circle with it and it will weight a lot less then wood planks
It's a really good idea I want to, but I haven't found a pvc product of the right size and shape yet.
@@noli Try asking or checking places that make street banners or typography, i worked in one, and they have normally access to pvc and can make it any size or form, or at least say where to buy it raw

@@noli where i live 1m2 pvc will be less then 20$. In your case you need like 25-30cm x 320cm panel for that, which just around square meter. Already made one probably gonna cost more, because of work expenses

@@noli So that is $275, not including all the time (and wood glue and a lot of screws).
You can buy a new one for less than that.
I'm trying to keep mine under $100....I think I have all the materials ready and I'm at about $83 ready to start.....Might need band-aides, I'm not that handy with hand tools!

I used a cutting service for the big round wood. I can only cut small woods yet.

Carpet is a bad idea unless you keep your car's claws trimmed. Otherwise their claws can get stuck while that have a good clip going and they won't go back on it.
Cats get bored of toys after a bit. Afraid to invest the time and money into this to have my little guy say, “meh” after a few hours. It’d be cool if you could rent one.

There is not. I made it a little bigger than what I saw at the pet shop.

How do I determine the dementions? By the base or size of the wheel. I tend to overthink my projects, and basically my mind gets to the point where I don't understand anymore because I've somehow decided that it must look like one of the 7 wonders of the the world🤦🙄
