To answer Grace's question, I am a scholar of native american religions. Native American culture treats things like hospitality and honor above all other values. The idea that material possessions and wealth could signify one's status runs counter to Native American culture. They trusted Europeans, assuming that their culture was one of honor and hospitality to others.

That's why you form your own opinion on all the information you've looked into. Actually trying to be a little informed and not ignoring everything because you think it could possibly be biased is better than nothing. Most of our history is unedited because there was no reason to sugarcoat it at the time. It's only now that people want to ban books or try to create some sort of revisionist History. Be weary of those that don't want you to know your past. Things are better and things are better because we haven't ignored our past. The negatives are just as important as the positives. The Constitution is built on being able to recognize this.

They worked very closely with the Osage community during filming. All I've heard from Osage people who has already seen this movie is how well they are portrayed and how respectful it is towards them.

I hear from an interview with one of the descendants of a featured character, their mental health had been broken by the boarding school system. I think the film was too subtle in telling us about how the boarding school system had an effect on the Osage that were young adults at the time of the murders.
Grace you seemed to expect this film to explain so much. That's what a documentary is for. You can't judge that time with today's modern sensibilities.
A movie doesn't have to over explain, but it should give the viewer a grasp of the entire situation. That's what she's saying
Yeah, for a movie this long they should have been able to explain more of the circumstances. It was poorly written.
Friendly PSA: Not all Native Americans are the same. Not every tribe was welcoming. Look up the Comanche - Apache - Chiricahua and more. So many stories and history are never told. We are not all the same. A good book to check out is : The Last Comanche Chief by Bill Neeley - foreward by James Cox - Quanah Parker's grandson. That being said I like Scorsese BUT not the films you said this film was like (sigh)
Hopefully we can see those stories on the screen someday.

As a fellow native, can confirm. I’ve been reading about various native related histories over the last year (don’t know why i didn’t do it sooner) and yeah….. definitely many different reactions to white migration (and later colonization). This movie had such a big impact on me. I sat in the theater as the only native in a room full of white folks and got destroyed by this film. It literally stunned me. I sat there the entire way through the credits in shock, and when I got to my car I sat there for 10 mins feeling so much rage and sadness.

Grace, In the 1920s and 1930s the KKK were a mainstream organization. Membership in the US was up to 8 million people, which was like 10% of the population. The KKK even held a massive rally at Madison Square Garden in New York City.
I think you are blaming the movie for your own lack of historical education.
The problem is....most Americans lack historical education in general and I think she could be right in criticizing the film lack of explanation; (I have not seen it yet and I'm not American...we'll see if she's correct in her assessment!)
But that’s the problem. Most people don’t know that and if you’re trying to make a movie three hours long, that doesn’t explain that. Your audience is going to be severely small.😂

I don't know how Native American communities viewed the KKK at that time, but I can tell you that most Black Americans were fully aware of that organization's deplorable acts. That 10% of the population surely included some naive white Americans, but that also was a time when most of them simply and openly embraced racial hatred. I would definitely need clarification as to why any native people would want to go to them for help. Maybe there is an explanation, but if this film is supposed to be about their perspective- what is it???

7:22 Question 1: Native America tribes do not actually own the land of their Reservation. It's call a "reservation" because it is Federally owned land with reserved use for a specific tribe.
I just saw a video on the true story behind this movie and it said that this particular piece of land was purchased by the Osage a few years before oil was found and that is why they were able to keep the mineral rights.
The Age of Innocence, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York were all huge Oscar contenders… 😂
Gangs of New York is particular is a HUGE cultural phenomenon - it's seen and studied around the world as a movie that translates American Culture.
Money is a pretty powerful indicator of power, but it's not the only one.
Imagine how much of humanity would've been lost, if the only art available was the art that broke box office records?

Ageof Innocence was not a huge Oscar contender even though it got some noms, which is a shame considering it is one of Scorcese's better films unlike Aviator and Gangs of New York which were both awful.
The native Americans did not “allow it”, instead, US policy forced subjugation and participation.
The wealthiest Osage controlled no money, or land, instead, the US government required the Osage use financial guardians(white men) to manage these assets. The government also broke the tribal land into allotments, which made it easier for white guardians to take land, or forces specific tribal members to sell their parcels. The Osage saw what happened to the Cherokee, and decided they didn’t want the same fate.
In the end, the Osage had a choice : be controlled and ‘rich’, or be slaughtered and run off their lands for a third time

E.g., trying to explain why there were no police. I think that’s obvious.
The police are/were considered an oppressive forces, and thus, most communities rejected their existence. Instead, regular citizens volunteered to investigate crime’s through a process known as inquisitions. Common knowledge at the time, so explaining it would seem out of place.

One of the biggest films of 1988 wasn’t a big budget action film full of special effects, but a quiet film about two bothers on a road trip together, “RAIN MAN.” It did extremely well box office wise, and went on to win Best Picture.
Before that in 1979, “KRAMER vs. KRAMER,” was a huge commercial success and made over $170 Million dollars, and winning BEST PICTURE Oscar. A small family drama about divorce??
Can you imagine if the film came out today?? Oh wait, it did!! “A Marriage Story,” it did a world wide box office of $2.3 million!

9:09 Tribal land has always been a grey zone for law enforcement. Tribal police only have jurisdiction on tribal land & only in the last DECADE got the ability to have non tribe suspects extradited back for prosecution. Before that a non tribe person could go on tribal land commit any crime &, if they weren't caught then & there, they could just leave & likely get away with it.

"Where's law enforcement?" In fact law enforcement (or at least police force) was kind of created to keep black people and indigenous people away from white property.

It was a downer. I loved the first half, but when things started to spiral it totally lost me. I don't think Grace likes these kind of movies either that really have no point other than that everything went to shit and it's told in an "impressive way".
It's so funny you mention women not being able to have bank accounts. I was just watching The Lucy Show and so many of the plots are kicked off from her as a widow not having access to her own money and trying to DIY house maintenance.

The Aviator is the reason that I love movies. You probably have a very vague memory of the movie. It was a masterpiece, in terms of story, best leonardo dicaprio acting, cinematography. and in 2004 was the most talked movie in oscar season with ray. I watched with a full audience. Martin Scorsese is a Genius.
i think that film deserved a best picture oscar win than The Departed, in all categories.

I see Grace is perhaps unaware of many aspects of native Americans "life on the Res",..LoL
The Indian reservations have little to no recognizably, traditional Law Enforcement,.,.and this, is really for obvious reasons.
Meaning some similar issues to that of other disenfranchised communities whom have had issues trusting the police.
However,..in Grace's defense
A) She's more of a Film Analyst looking at, and assessing the commercial viability of a particular movie ( weighing in on the potential commercial appeal of a property ) and trying to look at the mindset of the studio.
B) It probably would've been best for everyone had this simply been a longform format Documentary or docu-drama story on HBO or Netflix

born and raised 15 minutes from Pawhuska and 30 mins from Fairfax. They did a lot to credit the Natives around here in Osage County. I am Osage and I enjoyed it actually.
Gangs of New York is one of my favorite films ever....
Just saw the movie and Grace wasn't lying about what happens. This film was disappointing imo. There was no need for a film to be sooooo long. Scorsese made the pacing work in The Irishman but not in KOTFM

But some hsitory books in the South are pretty good about hiding all the spoilers.
They did not willingly let them in. It was AGAINST THE LAW for them to control their own money. By law they had to have a guardian. That was an actual law on the books. Maybe the movie should have explained that better to Grace’s point

It is a great book. I have no idea how the movie will turn out. The movie is about the birth of FBI.
That might be what the book is about, but it's not what the movie is about. Sure the FBI shows up, but they are not a focus point for the film at all and it's never established that this case was what actually created the FBI. The FBI is just presented as a recently formed organization.
The Tulsa massacre was 'touched briefly upon' by The Watchmen? 😂😂😂😂😂😂 That's ALL the HBO Watchmen was about.

There are answers to all of your questions, but they aren’t relevant to the story being told. This movie doesn’t paint a complete picture, it couldn’t, it just shows you enough to understand what’s going on, and then if you’re still interested in it then you can do your own research and learn about that history for yourself.
You’re right that they could’ve explained a few things that were necessary to the story in more detail, but this movie was clearly made for a specific audience, and that audience is either smart enough, or will have the right mindset going in to recognise the pieces and put them together.

Scorsese is one of my favorite filmmakers so I’m seeing this no matter what. I also loved Oppenheimer and Banshees of Inisherin, which Grace also didn’t care for. I did appreciate this thoughtful review though.
I am disappointed it’s not a classic Scorsese crime movie.

Also, I appreciate that she’s not lying to save face. She’s just giving her honest opinion and I respect that, but I know where we differ in taste so I will see this movie because we tend to disagree on dramas. Great Review!
100%! I enjoy Grace's reviews as well, even when I also disagree with her conclusions; and this is one of those. But then I have read a great deal about (atrociously corrupt) white Indian Agents and the relocations of all tribes of indigenous peoples at the whims of larger tribes, local politicians, military generals, and greedy settlers. She hasn't read on this topic as much, as is probably true for most viewers of this movie... totally understand that!

Grace. I think you should read the book of the same name. It explains a lot and is such a good read. I finished it in a day.
About the law enforcement part. Robert De Niro’s character is a part of the law enforcement himself and the town was controlled by him. The law enforcements are on his pockets. They acted on his will.
Your complaints suggest you did not read book. I get it. Movie should speak for itself. I am excited to see it. It is a GREAT book. Read it.

You know this was based off a true story right? It seems a lot of your criticisms are history based rather than from the film itself. Everything doesn’t need to be spelled out like every other socially conscious film now a days. This is a good example of using film to move people and showcase the plight / horrors of our history.

Slow does not mean bad. The Scorsese dramas are great, not as great as the crime movies, but great nonetheless.

As someone who grew up in Montana, I wonder if people who are familiar with the Reservation system and the systemic, historical injustices imposed on Indigenous populations may feel they need less explanation from the movie. It’s a tough thing to balance narrative and storytelling with exposition/history.
I’ll wait to pass judgement until I see it for myself. But I have a feeling this may be a film that is trying to just present the facts as they were, and to encourage the kind of incredulity you’re describing. It’s likely supposed to be shocking and supposed to encourage audiences to dig into that exposition/history themselves after their viewing.

I wonder how this movie would play outside the states, where people don't know american history, don't want to research (because does not consern them) and just want to see a good story.
So, I’ve seen this and you should definitely see this in a movie theatre.
I also had a lot of questions. I think that is part of the point, it is very strange the Osage people and specifically the woman in particular would behave and be treated as they are. Also the fact that Robert de Niro’s character is so obviously the big bad ( I don’t think that’s a spoiler) Then again, we today have men who are so obviously grifters, but millions of people follow them anyway. That’s the tragedy.
I think it's difficult for many with modern sensibilities and experiences to understand the actions and behaviors of those who came before us.
I've seen it too. I guess the simple answer is: Unless you were the real characters or the Osage then you don't know the full understanding of the story.

Grace, I saw Killers of the Flower Moon last night and your review is baffling to me. I really loved the movie. It really zipped along and it didnt feel like a 3.5hr movie. Honestly, the FBI part was the last interesting to me. The movie felt like a beautiful honoring of the Osage people at that time period and I dont see how you felt it made them look stupid.... Usually when we disagree on a movie, I can kinda see where you're coming from, even if I disagree. But I don't really get a lot of your complaints with the movie - I felt they weren't there or your question was answered in the movie. It feels like we watched completely different movies...
I appreciate your honest, unfiltered opinion even if I don't fully agree. I personally loved the film. But your reviews open me up to new perspectives.
This is a really interesting view Grace, I know that you're also interested in History and your comments made me reflect. Leaving things too vague can lead to incorrect and easy assumptions, but I haven't seen the film so can't really comment yet. I did like Gangs of New York though! I'm curious to see the general public's response and where the audience reception will land.
I saw this review was a negative one before I saw the movie so I didn’t watch it and thought for sure I’d disagree with Grace. Just got back from seeing it and I agree with every point she made here. 🤷🏽♂️
It made no sense no one figured out for 4 hours who was behind the killings. It's not great from a storytelling stand point when the audience knows waaay in advance.
I think that was the point, the film show the sensibility of that era to challenge ours and to make us reflect what has and hasn't been accomplished throughout history

I agree that a film shouldn't be expected to hold the audience's hand. However, I also agree with Grace that there has to be enough clues for a reasonably smart viewer to piece the plot together.
I've liked some of Terrance Malick's work ( I proudly own the original blu-ray of "Tree of Life" and the Criterion Collection release), and I love "Gangs of New York" warts and all. And there are some other films from Scorsese I like but that would make for a longer post.

I am very much looking forward to it, and I hope there's a real audience it finds. It seems that across the spectrum of theater releases, everyone is suffering. Bold creative swings like Beau is Afraid, Asteroid City, The Creator flop hard and then everyone is also superhero'd out and burned out on sequels. I genuinely don't know what to even think anymore more. Cheers!

Yes, it’s worth watching just for Daniel Day Lewis but overall it’s a pretty damn good (not quite great) movie

In regards to how Robert De Niro's character was able to get away with his crimes when it should be obvious that he was the one committing him: Maybe naievete was a factor. But kind of like how even though Brendan Fraser's character is over-the-top, it rings true to present-day theatrics of some attorneys, I saw shades of today's events in people not thinking that King Hale was a criminal. How many times have we seen people, despite clear, compelling evidence, not believe that a public figure has done terrible, often criminal, things? While it baffles me, there are many people who will support such public figures and act against their own self-interests.
Agree it should have been told from the indigenous FBI officer's perspective.

It’s a great movie, definitely give it a shot. The only part of her review I even somewhat agree with is the pacing issues.
I would compare it the the Irishman in pacing.
I liked the movie, but I did read the book first. That being said I do agree with every point you make. If I watched the film without reading the book first, I may have felt confused and unsatisfied.
I highly recommend DARK WINDS from George R.R. Martin and Robert Redford on AMC Plus. With Zahn McLarnon of Fargo S2 and Westworld. 9/10

Ms. Randolph, if I may, I don’t believe a white, even one as prolific as Martin Scorsese is capable of fully capturing the nuances and pathos of the Native American experience. The question you pose, I believe, are good ones. With films such as these, I feel as if, you’re suppose to find fault in it because it’s up to us to educate ourselves using methods outside of this film to learn about the complexities of this story. Don’t turn to art to “learn” history. Turn to art to be inspired to learn history. Thank you for your time. I love your reviews.
You should watch "Napolean Dynamite" About 3 times before you will "get" it! Amazing Movie!

This film is from the point of view of Earnest - you don’t get context because from his point of view this is all normal - why explain what is normal? It is meant to be confusing to us, case in point the KKK casually parading down the street - that is how it was and no one of that time would think it strange so no explanation or exposition would make sense
Grace respectfully, I think you’re expecting so much more detail and so many things to still be built upon and over explained but that’s not the films job necessarily, that’s where a documentary would come in. Also one of your problems with this movie is the pace and the length but if it got further into the history and the psychology and all of the details you’re looking for it would be a 10 hr long movie and better suited as a mini series. Also you’re saying the premise seems comical and laughable but it ACTUALLY happened, so they embellish things and other things they keep very accurate and raw because it would be disrespectful to the story to portray it otherwise . Idk I think you’re usually on point but you’re poking holes in history. You don’t wish the story was told differently you seem to wish the story went differently.

I thought the movie was great because Scorsese is such a master. But I came out of it with almost ALL of the same questions Grace had! It made me want to read the book, so maybe that's a good thing. But as a movie viewing experience, it got frustrating.

Haha excellent review! I thought for a 3.5 hr movie, it didn’t feel that long, but I have to agree with Grace’s points. My own experience was the same with lots of questions and feeling perplexed. I would have been more interested more with the investigation. I didn’t read the book but I still remember the NPR episode that told this tragic story. Brendan Fraser was absolutely terrible in this movie with his overacting. I am usually a sobbing mess but I had a minimal attachment to the characters.
Gangs of New York is one of my favorite movies of all time. So I’m very pumped to watch this

But that’s the point - it is extremely obvious Hale and Earnest are responsible but a point was made very early that you would have a harder time convicting a man of killing an Indian then you would him kicking a dog.

Everyone born in America is a Native American but I agree with your overall point. The Indians were fighting and killing each other long before the white man.

I guess what I want from this movie is a deep character dissection that helps someone like me understand the baffling choices made by some of the people who were victimized in all of this. I hope it does that but from what you are telling me Grace it may lack in that area. I'm willing to overlook for the other good things but I'm concerned. I'm sure the movie will be great, cinema and all of that stuff on point but when looking at why people made the choices they took I think that gives us as viewers a more complex understanding of the overall picture. Nevertheless I look forward to it
The choices of the victims isn't the issue. It's the choices of the murderers that should be examined

I think most history is not taught in well enough clearly, American history is very dirty when actually taught 😂
