Looking for the perfect mid-level AMG daily car? Or a mid tier performance estate from the German brands? This new #MercedesAMG E53 in estate/ wagon /T Modell form might be the one for us all! This is an #AMG that has only gotten more emotional over time, whether that is from the new more aggressive design, vs the old lacklustre one, or the improved exhaust note. Something that just doesn’t happen much these days!
Of course the E53 returns with the same 3.0-litre 6-cylinder in-line engine with exhaust gas turbocharger and electric additional compressor, all based on a 48-volt on-board electrical system. Yawn. What that really equates to is a 456BHP combined output between the combustion engine and the hybrid element, and 770NM of torque! You’ll be pleased to know we tested the claimed 0-60 figure of 4.6 seconds, and found the car to be faster in reality. But the magic happens when this light hybrid package marries the AMG Performance Exhaust!
The E53 really shows how AMG are making the best performance wagons these days. With the E63S as the fastest on the Ring (no RS6 in sight), the E53 Estate enjoys a space with no rival from Audi or BMW, with the Audi S6 now a low powered diesel. The E53 in fact takes things further with a fully variable all wheel drive system able to send 100% power to the rear, drift mode available in Europe: something the RS6 can’t even do!
Topping off the package is the AMG RIDE CONTROL+ suspension with adaptive damping system, which makes the daily element quite pleasurable. The car I had also had self-driving driving assistance, which was amazing on a longer stint. MPG on the E53 was decent too, with a full tank delivering over 500 miles!
In Europe, you can get the AMG Dynamic Plus package, with Red callipers, Dynamica steering wheel, AMG Steering wheel buttons and that Race Mode with Drift mode. Sadly not yet available in the UK, though we will test it in the next video with the CLS 53.

Love my E53 as well, It can be a hooligan when you want to push it but it can be also a "economical" for the power (38.9 mpg on return trip from Leeds to London). Yes i understand it is not a E63s or a RS6. But love my AMG convertible E53 ..

The brown looks better in person. Camera washes it out a bit. It's actually a shade or two darker.
Simply loving it. I watched this review before the test drive and have just watched it again having bought a new one. What a great car. Feels bigger than XJR and S6 but I love it. So planted. Still learning my way around it. Can't get the exhaust to pop quite like on this review, may have to give it more beans. Interestingly I've noticed the engine note improves with better fuel. There are a few BP stations selling 105 octane fuel. It's like lightening in a bottle.

Why is the front camera properly placed (centered) on the E53 and not the E63?
As much as an amg fan, I would still go for a m550i...it has a V8. And imo it's better than an M5 as a daily...no that this is bad in anyway...
You mentioned the RS6 and BMW but what about the Panamera wagon 4, 4s, gts, turbo, turbo e-hybrid as well as the taycan sport turismo ev. Pretty compelling stuff right there as competitors.
The Bananamera is quite a bit more expensive like for like though.

I’m looking to buying one of these and just wondered if you know if the latest 2022 model comes with the the 12.3 inch screens I’ve heard they have been dropped to 10.23 inch screens for the E53 and only available for the E63s just wondered if you can confirm this?

I have one... having hyrbid battery issues, but might be resolved now. It hits bumps too hard around town, and those run flat pirellis are horrible.. its a great driving car, very precise on the highway, goes where you point it, its quick, its fun.. I love it for the most part... also i can get 1000+ km on a tank of gas on the highway.

Is it really terrible of me to say, I would take this over an E63S any day? I just love the sound of 6 cylinders, the E53 costs less, it seems naturally more comfortable and you still get the AMG looks and practicality of an E63 estate/wagon.
I chose the E53 over and E63, for 2 reasons. The AWD in a coupe is nice, price, and comfort. I made the right choice, both friends with an e63 love the coupe body line! I would prefer some of the snarls of a v8 but you can't have it all sometimes.
Same. There's no point paying a £30k premium for a load of power and performance you can't legally use in the UK anyway. The E53 isn't exactly slow! Perfect family car.

Comes down to what you value more, driving experience or appearances. Take the RS6, drives nicely and looks better. I'll take the E63s, it looks worse but the driving experience is more engaging.

Hi we have had our c43 convertible for 3 years and started thinking about replacing it with e53. How are your impressions after this switch, particularly in comfort department?
@@patryksobanski473 I must say, it is SIGNIFICANTLY, more comfortable. I went from a 2016 e550 to a c43 and loved the switch. It was much more nimble, but now that I'm back in an E, especially the 53 with all the bells and whistles, it's been a nice change. The ride is much smoother, the sound is more muted however, so be warned..
@@middle-earthtroll5024 thank you for your answer. My idea is to replace both c43 and audi a8 with a cabriolet, which is more comfortable on long journeys than c43. E53 seems the best option but we are waiting for an official debut of new sl though...

I was informed (or maybe mislead or misinformed) that race mode is not available until the software recognises that 1500km have been driven? 🤷♂️
I have viewed a brand new model available for sale here in the uk which does have the round steering wheel mounted controls for drive mode and exhaust etc 🤷♂️

Great review as usual. Why did you get rid of your GT 4door and have you done a video about its departure?
I think he had a lot of problems with it, window being smashed and stuff. And he wanted to wait for the 73 since the GT 63s is more or less a styled E63s.

The C-Class is brand new for 2022 (US). The S-Class is brand new for 2021 (US). The E-Class won't be brand new until 2024 (US).

hi Mr amg i have a question and am hoping u can answer that with all honestly am thinking about tuning my cla250 2018 and am hesitating the car is very valuable for me and if I do anything that breaks it I don't have any other car to replace it can u give me the history of tuning a car since I noticed u do have tuned many of ur cars does the tuning really breaks the car in the long run or cut off it age, for example, a car runs 5 years it will lower it by 4 or more any extra info u can give me to lean forward or away from a tune is appreciated
I don’t think tuning a cla250 will give you what your looking for as it has a fairly weak 4 cylinder with a small turbo. An ecu update might bring the horsepower to 250 but that wouldn’t make any real difference. I’d trade in the cla250 for an older e450, go to a non luxury brand for cheap speed, or wait until you can afford an entry level amg

Nobody talks about fuel consumption. And thats a reason because the consumption in E43 or E53 is very very high. My friend has the E53 and with normal driving it goes never under 12 liters. Its too much.
Btw The E63s needs 2 liters more.

@@rfendlen I think BMW doesn't offer the M550i as a touring variant, I could be wrong though. Although there's a M550d Touring but it's not available in the UK and being a diesel like the new S6, he doesn't want to compare it with the E53.

RS4 is the competitor to E53
No it’s not. The Audi 4-series is equivalent to the Merc C-series. The most direct competitor is the Audi S6, but that’s a diesel.
This is indeed a great car.Yes no direct rivals in this wagon category. But I'm afraid and though I'm an AMG fan but the light M cars with their V8 are much more powerful and faster;
An X5M50i with it's 500+ hp roaring V8 would make a GLE53 look like a malnourished kid in comparison.
The same goes with 550i vs E53, the 5 series will simply demolish the E class.
Unlike the full fat AMG as they are indeed worthy opponent for their respective M rival.
I think a porshe panamera 4s gran turismo might be a good rival, but price wise its on another level

Best digital dashboard? Dont agree. Lexus digital dashboard with the sideways moving speedometer is still the best out there. Shame more manufacturers didnt copy it. Once you've seen it in action....
Am I the only one that utterly hates carbon fiber trims? I'd much rather have some nice burl walnut wood or black/gray open pore wood for a sporty spec? Even aluminum is better

Same！ Unfortunately Mercedes screwed up a little bit. I heard that they seriously delayed the production of GLE63s Coupe and a lot of customers are not happy about that. They put the 53 at first place because more orders coming in than the flagship 63s models.

The car is fast and gets a lot better gas mileage than your M550. Have fun at the gas station.

BMW might not have a wagon but the M550 with a twin-turbo V8 will blow the doors off the EQ boosted V6 E53 and sound better doing it.

Surprisingly under powered for an AMG straight 6...
The V6 43 used to have 396 hp, so it's more than that.
It can be tuned to 500hp for stage one and 570 with stage 2
Prefer the wagon. Really?? Practicality yeah okay. But who buys an AMG for practicality. With kids, saloon. All others got to be the sexy looking coupe. Only problem is trying to get hold of one ………… lead time 8 months aaaarrrgh.

I beg to differ, from what I've seen a modified RS6 is the BOSS in its class but has been cuffed by Audi due to its in house halo super car and sister brand Lamborghini.

Mercedes has no barrier between its cars, Audi clearly has a pecking order both in house and within the VW group and that's as clear as day.
IE the Golf R is shackled Vs the more expensive "halo" RS5 and it's five cylinders in sister brand Audi.
The RS6 'let lose' obliterates the M5 comp, clearly both it and it's RS7 sister are deeply reserved for branding.
Doesn't mean I don't love the AMG but facts are facts.

But the current flagship AMG GT product - the Black Series (730hp) has more power than the E class flagship (E63 S). Look at Audi's cars - The RS 6 (600hp) has a higher power than the halo R8 (570hp) not R8 Performance.
So, the barrier (or rather having no barrier) aspect you stated is applicable to Audi products as well.
As for obliterating the M5 Competition, I'm yet to see a video where the RS 6 does so and I'm willing to see one but just like you say facts are facts.

The Black Series is the AMG GT flagship, irrespective of the engine or its track orineted nature, in fact the whole AMG GT range uses the M178 motor where as the E63 uses the M177.
