Update guys: I finally got it to work!!!!! When you move your PCSX2 files into your RetroArch system directory, DO NOT I repeat DO NOT move the PCSX2.exe file into the RetroArch system folder with the rest of the PCSX2 files. This will work trust me. Now RetroArch launches smoothly without any problems!! I've done everything you explained in this video step by step. I've downloaded PCSX2 2, loaded the bios files in PCSX2, dragged the PCSX2 folder to the RetroArch system folder, downloaded the PCSX2 core in RetroArch, etc and PCSX2 will not load in RetroArch. What happens is, when I hit start core RetroArch loads with a white screen and closes immediately. I've even tried different video drivers glcore, d3d11, etc. It won't work!! What am I doing wrong? My bios files are in the correct folder as well.
dude....i can't even begin to express how happy i am after watching your video. It was horribly laggy in psx2, but in this one it runs beautifully and on higher resolution. I don't understand why, but i know that I'm ecstatic it's finally working. Thank you so much! update: never mind. still messing up -_- I got a little passed the beginning sequence of the game and it started doing it again. I've officially given up. Until I get a newer graphics card I'm just gonna stick with other stuff.
I was going crazy figuring out how to get this to work. Was following ETA primes tutorial and kept getting a crash (nothing against him, still love his content). I watch your tutorial and it just worked. Thank you for a clear, straight to the point video! You earned a sub 👍
I only had half of this setup done correctly when I tried to do it myself, thanks for having such a thorough and well explained video. Got me up and running smoothly.
A crashing problem I ran into and solved. If anyone is having their Retroarch crash when they try to change the version to an USA version, I simply removed the scph10000 bin file. For some reason Retroarch always crashed whenever I tried to change any settings through the menu while the BIOS was running. Now when I start the Core for PCSX2 it asks me for a language and time zone. From there I was able to finally load Gran Turismo 3/simply start up Gran Turismo 3 without first loading the core then loading the content. It freezes when I attempt to go full screen mode, otherwise it works perfectly
I searched for so long trying to find a way to setup and install a PS2 emulator to play all my childhood games, but then i was able to find your video. Thank you so much even if it sounds cheesy I really appreciate this upload and your straight foreward tutorial.
You helped me a lot..You saved my day.I was frantically searching how to play ps2 games on retroarch..Your video is great and explained every thing for me.Thank you very much....
Thanks for the video, mate!! Good job!!! I use PCSX2 emulator because I think is better for the graphics configuration. I love your videos. Thanks a lot!
I have no idea how everybody is able to get it to work, I did everything in the video and downloaded everything and put it where it belongs but when I go to retroarch, click load core, then click the Sony PlayStation 2 one, and press start core, nothing happens and it closes everything
I've been having a problem. When I boot the core with no game, it works perfect. I can interact with the PS2 title screen and everything. But when I try to boot a game, it says "failed to load content". I've tried installing redist like people said, and it still gives me the same error.
Followed the instructions and Retroarch just crashes when I hit Start Core. I looked online and all I found was a guy who grappled with it for 5 months only for the mods to close the thread with no solution.
Update, I fiddled around and found out the folder placement is VERY important. Make sure the PCSX2 folder is directly in the game folder and, less intuitively, put the video game isos in your personal user drive, like Documents or Downloads.
I had this same issue. I copied the PSCX2 folder over like he states, but Arch would just crash anytime I tried to load the core. When I looked in the folder though, all the contents of the BIOS folder were missing for some reason. After copying the contents of that folder and pasting them, I was able to load the core and content for it. Not sure if that will be your case or not, but I hope it helps.
A year later and PCSX2 has changed a *lot* since this tutorial. Simple question: if we are doing this now (Sept 2022 onwards), do we still use the old 1.6 stable version for RetroArch's core or should we use the download for the more recent nightly "Qt" versions? I already use the Qt version as a standalone, but what about with RetroArch?
Ok, so I followed the instructions, just like you said, and I've run into a snag. Every time I tried to boot up the PCSX2 Core, RetroArch would close down entirely. Please let me know if there is a way to remove this problem.
after putting the PCSX file into retroarch, it won't load anything, the core for PCSX is now known as LRPS2, which retroarch says is the same, but after loading it, nothing happens, HELP!!
For people who can't find the Ps2 core, the core is only available for the PC (as "alpha") to test or try out how the core works there, it will probably take a while before the ps2 core is also available for Android and for the other devices (except PC of course). But I think retroarch (and retroarch plus) is really great. I've played my old childhood games so far (on ps1, gamecube, Nintendo ds, etc.) and everything is working fine so far. Looking forward to playing with the ps2 core 👍
RetroArch with this method has fixed some of the games I play while leaving some still looking weird texture wise but I have no issue using both when one emulator is not getting the job done with one game
So I have retroarch on the latest version on my switch, but pcsx2 doesn’t show up in the core downloader, only pcsx for the PlayStation 1. Any way I can get pcsx2?
I've tried everything mentioned in the video and comments but it still crashes every time I try to start the core. If anyone can help id really appreciate it

I followed all your instructions but I'm having a problem, everything works correctly except the square, triangle and round cross buttons, as well as their functions (jump shoot etc.) when pressed they move the camera in different directions making it impossible to play! I have checked several times in the settings and with more controllers of different types but the problem is the same! if instead I launch the game directly with pcsx2 without retroarch I don't have this problem so I'm sure the problem is retroarch! do you have any advice for me?
@@MrSujano Okay, it took me a minute to figure out their file naming convention, but I kept the files "ps2-0230a-20080220.bin" and "ps2-0230a-20080220.nvm" and now it loads up using USA v02.30. Thanks.
One point. If I load the file from within retroarch as you do, it works. However if I try to load the game from imported content on the bottom left of the main menu it will only boot to playstation title screen with no game loaded or will not work at all...
Great tutorial, very informative. What system and graphics card do you own? I've tweaked the core settings exactly as you did, but when I try playing Champions Return to Arms or even Risk audio and graphics are still choppy.
No matter what I do it just crashes after I try to load the core, at this point I just give up with emulators I can never get them to work even when I follow the instructions
frameskipping improves the performance for the game im trying out (Okage Shadow King), but it leaves a ghost image of the last thing shown in the game before enabling frameskipping, which makes it hard to see the game when there is a transparent double image behind. when restarting, it instead leaves a transparent black image, which makes the game look a lot darker than usual. in short, it makes me unable to use frameskipping for that game, and i need it since certain scenes and battles slows the game down up to 40fps or less when lots of models are in the same place.
Just use the standalone pcsx2 emulator for pc. It's way easier to setup and it rarely ever crashes. Good luck trying to run electronic arts games on the retroarch version. Many other games crash too. Honestly more games crash than don't crash on it. I was going to give up on ps2 emulation because I tried retroarch first. I never tried the emulator by itself. I was deleting my iso files. Tried the standalone program and it was perfect. I don't use retroarch for anything more powerful than n64 or ps1.
i have a question. i tried all and such but when i tried to launch the game, it doesnt even launch the game. it like exits the app completely and such. any thing i'm doing wrong?
Downloaded the PS2 core from the standalone version, copied it over to the Steam one, ran the core (still calls it pcsx2_libreto but works) and hit 'Load Content', selected the rom and had to choose between 2 cores, none of them the PS2 one (Sega and PPSSPP). How could I fix it? Could it be the rom or do I have to go through something else? Can't seem to find an answer.
So I followed the directions yet still no go. Not only does it refuse to show up on the bottom like most cores do but I also keep getting the failed to load libretro core message when I select the game. Nice video though.
Try to boot up and it quickly brings me to a choose language screen where none of my controller commands are registering.. PCSX2 runs just fine.. but running it through retroarch is somehow breaking something and I don't know what I followed to the letter and it happened after switching Bios now no matter how often I try to switch Bios and reset it is the same result. No clue what to do next at this point
I'm using the M1 Mac Mini, and I don't find the "System" folder on my Retroarch. I also have installed the PCSX2, with all the BIOS and whatnot. Since I don't see the aforementioned folder on Retroarch, does it mean I cannot use the PCSX2 to play PS2 games on Retroarch? Where can I find the PCSX2 core if I want to download that manually?
Followed everything. Core will not load. I have it in the core folder and can select it and it does nothing. other cores will load, and pcsx2 works fine outside retroarch.

Could you tell me what it means when a pop up after trying to open the app says
"The code execution cannot proceed because m5vcp120.dll was not found. Reinstalling the program may help. "
Do you have a version of this tutorial but for Android or is it the same? Edit: I mean same steps
Followed these steps perfectly, but the core isn't showing up in retro arch. Any ideas what I can check to get this working?
