I’ve had an 032AV from new, over 50 years in fact. It’s the best saw I’ve ever had and cut a lifetime of firewood. Compression is still unbelievable and at 76 I can no longer pull it over. My wife suggested I could sell it and I said “no way it’s going in the casket with me”….Grin~
Dan, as an owner of a 031 AV, I've really enjoyed these episodes refurbishing the saw. My saw was given to me as a 1978 Christmas present. I love this saw for the power and ease care , maintenance. I've never had any problems with mine except plugs and starter ropes. Once again, thanks for taking me along with the rebuild. You Sir are one of the best. Also signed up as a new subscriber.
i all so got my 032av in 1982 and still going strong. seen more action than the Bismark. best stihl ever made, never been rebuilt. runs as good as the day I got it.
That's one of the best sounding stills I've ever heard I swear you might not believe this but it reminds me of my whole lot XL 12 that was bought back in about 1977
Never owned an 031. Have thought about getting one and restoring it. Mr. Obsolete says it has a lot of torque, more so than his 025. I don’t know but my 025 is no dog, nor is my 024. Both have a good bit of torque. They both have new cylinders, pistons and seals, as well as Caber rings. I cut up a dinner plate sized beech last week that fell in our American Legion hall parking lot with my 024 and it cut through it like it was butter. I agree cutting has a much to do with the chain as with the saw and it had a sharp chain. It’s original chain had been on my chain grinder and then, hand filed, so it was sharp. I do not waste time trying to cut with a dull chain as some do. I wire wheel old bars and then sand them. I then paint them with grey primer and then paint them. Flat white for Stihl bars, followed by a coat of satin clear. I use Rustoleum paint. I dress down the bar after the paint has dried, throughly. It takes 28 days for paint to completely dry. If you not clear coat the flat white the white will discolor when the bar oil hits it.
That saw reminds me a lot of my dads 056 av I just cleaned up. It still runs great so I didn’t have to do any work to it other than clean the years of caked on crud off. I used my da polisher and buffed and polished the top cover. Pretty amazed at how nice it came out. The sound of these old Stihls is music to my ears. I uploaded a short clip on my channel. Yours looks like a beauty!
Thanks Alex, holding the handle out is supposed to keep it from cicking back on the starter pawls, I've seen other guys do it but not sure if it is really necessary 🤔
some of these aftermarket fuel lines for Stihl will collapse like a wet noodle thus starving the engine of fuel. I kept adjusting the carb. Checking that fuel line may be the cause of bogging down. Thanks for posting this video
Awesome job mate, she's sweet as a nut! Love the old Stihls. I've just scored a trio myself. An 031, 041 and 051. Looking forward to getting them all cleaned up. Man if I can get half as good a result as you did, I'll be happy! I had to laugh in the first episode where you said you get ahead of yourself, forget something, and have to take it apart again. That's exactly what I do lol. And then you always have one bolt or screw left over and you can't remember where it came from. 🤣 Subscribed! 👍
Never tune a saw for five minutes after you crank it up. That is straight from the Husqvarna Service Manual and I assume it is the same in the Stihl Service Manual.
Great Job Dan sounds great!, however please start buying a better quality canned gas or mix your own! Trufuel is garbage, and not recommended for many outdoor power equipment! Stihl is expensive but Husqvarna has one that is better!
Thanks Pat, yeah you're probably right, I really need to go back to mixing my own, I want to try that Echo Red Armour recommended by Mr. Obsoletes, there's only one station here that sells non-ethanol gas....but it lasts a while when you mix up a couple gallons...😊
@@KainKustomGarage some of the other canned gasses are not bad, VP, Stihl, and Husqvarna, but the trufuel brand has put may saws in the shop, including some of mine! So I stay away from it!

Love the vintage Stihl saws. I have an 032 AV bought new in 1982, still running. An O28 WB is my go to saw. Great saws.

A few more a head of me but that's ok, just more practice for when you get to the mini Mac... Keep up the great work .

Nice John! Yeah the 031 is a pretty good all around saw....Thanks for your Wisdom Sir😉
That saw came together really nice Dan. Another nice win out of the Kain Kustom Garage!

Thank you my Friend!😊
With that clean of a saw and considering it’s age I would use it as a display 😅
I know right!
Nice job. 👌. I love these old saws. When you shut the saw off I see you pull the cord a little. Is there a reason for that?

Kind of curious why you pull the pull start handle when you shut it off
I got it from other videos, apparently it keeps the starter from getting broken if the saw kicks back....still not sure if it's necessary or not🤔
Have you ever changed the fuel lines on a 31 or 32AV? If so can you post a video or provide a link to another video? Thanks for what you do.
better to rebuild carburetor, or just buy a new one.. they seem to be around $20 new for the complete unit vs $9 for the rebuild kit?
I always like to rebuild the original ones, new ones aren't as good in my opinion
i have the same saw and am having trouble with the starter pawls. Can you show me how to properly install them. You left that part out.
Never tune a saw for five minutes after you crank it up. That is straight from the Husqvarna Service Manual and I assume it is the same in the Stihl Service Manual.

please show where the impulse line goes. i have an 031 new carb kit, runs lean like the impulse line.
Yeah, they are sort of a pain to get to...right behind the Air box that the carb bolts to....good luck brother..😊

VP race fuel, 94 octane premixed. Expensive but it smells like the drag srtip.
