About Gortash becoming the chosen, Bane approached Gortash by visiting him in his dreams and offered him to be his chosen. (In Gortash’s room you can interact with a statue that explain this.)
I know what you mean by Gortash's fight feeling anticlimatic, however it really fits in the themes of the Chosen Three - all three of them are defeated by thier blindspots/flaws. No matter who kills him, you or the Netherbrain, Gortash dies bewildered by his lack of control over his killers. Ketheric believes himself immortal, but the seeds of his obsession with his daughter grows into the object of his demise. Orin is a mad dog, completely unable to believe that she can fail, and so shes reckless and invites her death. I agree however that a final act in the upper city that expands on the control Gortash had would have been welcome, especially if it broke up the third act. Great video, as always!
Interesting. Where does it get mentioned that upper city was cut? I’m glad BG3 was such a great game. It’s a shame the DLC will never get made, but I understand why.
@@CaptainBanjo-fw4fqThere were a lot of datamined files from early access days as well as hints from Acts 1&2 that suggested there'd be more quests and parts to companion storylines, but they didn't make it in the final cut.
Hi there mister ghost, over a year ago i thanked you for getting a night nurse awake and entertained during these loooong nights. I still am watching every video, multiple times. In my opion the best lore guy on youtube. Anyways thanks yet again for ur hard work, u have no idea what it means to ppl like me ❤
I personally also found that there are some similarities between Gortash and the Count of Montecristo. Entirely justified in their hatred and search for revenge, the corruption of their heart truly understandable and their eventual end... just sad. I feel sorry for him being snuffed out like that. In the end he was just an extremely unlucky child, a victim of his circumstances
"A sort of whimpering death to one of the most powerful men the city of Baldur's Gate had ever seen." Honestly, I kinda dig that more than if he had some kind of possession/ultimate form boss fight. The most powerful man in the city, the master manipulator that started the whole plot, the top mortal servant to Bane himself, but when his silver tongue fails he has nothing to back himself up. All he can do is try and plink away with a crossbow and get folded over Karlach's axe. All bark, no bite. Fitting for a politician really.
He does have a transformation. Its called "Avatar of Bane" and its even worse on Honor Mode due to its Legendary Actions like "Fist of Bane". Its just easier to take him out before he activates. But yeah without the traps and the Steel Watchers, his just a another man.
Hey man, I'm 32 years old and my girlfriend of 10 years lost her dog recently. I only saw him once or twice a week but it's been the hardest loss I've ever had to deal with. Hope you're okay, buying a digital picture frame to see all his pictures scroll by every day makes me happy though. Any way to remember him positively, he loved us more than words can describe.
I'm sorry for your loss, remember the most important thing is to think about the time you had not the time you've been forsaken. Honor their memory with laughter don't let it rust from tears.
I think something that sets you apart from other UA-cam channels, is that you talk about everything with such a genuine interest and passion behind your words. You make great videos man, keep up the awesome work!
Good video once more. And yeah, something more could have been added to Gortash's tale, but I'm personally okay with the "Tyrant in his castle" thing he seems to have. And the convo with Bane, talking about "burning the fields of enemies" is kinda nice little answer to one of the questions some might have.
My first playthrough was a monk, so when Gortash offered his deal i just said "silly Gortash i'm a principled monk" and didn't think much of it. However, i'm now playing as a renegade dark urge, and the speech really caught me off-guard. Gortash really talks to you sincerely like you're a friend, and the revelation that you're the masterminds behind the Absolute is very powerful. It almost made me reconsider going through with my good guy playthrough. I realized my character was not just a mindless killer. Just like Gortash, he was smart and ambitious, and he *deserved* to control his own project. The game kept repeating through flashbacks and visions that he hated Orin, but it's during this speech that, as the player, i really thought of Orin as an undeserving traitor.
ah yes the chosen with the least amount of time dedicated to him kethric had one of the most badass intros i have seen in a while and all of act two hyping him up orin has ties to durge and even if you arnt durge she shows up everywhere do to being a shapeshifter and steals away a party member gortash feels like he is barely in the game in comparison
hardly ever comment on yt but had to drop some appreciation. your vids on the chosen have been such good content. i've probably listened to the Ketheric one a dozen times to fall asleep. was so hyped when this one dropped today, instantly listened to it all, loved it. amazing work man
Lovely getting this deep-dive! I've been in the periphery of the BG3 fandom for a while but haven't actually played the game yet (I need to use GeForce Now or my computer will vaporize), so it was great to finally learn more about this villainous trio beyond just the great fanart!
Honestly, we do take on face value the fact that he did something that parents did to him... And believe me, it is horrid. But you never thought that the event of what the parents of Gortash did triggered a sperratic and insane growth of his character from a child slave to a fucking Lord. In a way, maybe not in words but in actions he really wished the same to Karlac. He really did trust the fact that she would crawl out of there stronger or die being weak. In this twisted logic his way of life reflected on to the others underneath him. It's the only thing he knew, only way he really grew up. It's learning excercise and if you seen Gith training grounds. You know that judging the way others construct their lives is fruitless, since other way didn't quite workout one way or the other.
Thank you for this. This guy is definitely my favorite villain in the game, and I also felt he was drastically shortchanged. I would absolutely love to know how you personally would flesh him out and change things if someone just handed it to you and said, here, have at it.
Excellent work as always, boss! Great video, please keep them coming! 49:25 Very excited for the prospect of an emperor video, really dislike that guy. Not because he’s a mindflayer, a manipulator, or because it’s his way or the highway but because he has the gall to tell me and my dashing daring big damn hero friends that we’re not good enough at every turn. Every chance he gets he’s like “oh you’re so weak, oh you little baby non-mindflayer, just put more tadpoles in your brain bro, trust me bro.” 🙄🙄🙄
i still think they should have taken inspiration from dragon age origins, and let gortash fully join the player, and even take the place in becoming the mind flayer, sacrificing himself. Like you could with loghain in DA
I guess the difference is that, unlike Ketheric, you can defeat/incapacitate Gortash before he ever has a chance to use the ability linked to the transformation.
I have seen that "transformation" once and thought it was pretty lame. I didn't even really consider it a transformation based on my experience. I would have liked to see him really morph into something that made it feel like Bane was in fight as well - akin to the other chosen transformations
@@Ghostcharm If I remember correctly the transformation was just tall gortash with this black aura when it was first added. Later on though it got changed to this Steel Watcher like design that I think works pretty well.
Awesome video thank you for all the work ! The subject of Gortash's devotion did bother me at some point, but I ended up remembering that Gortash went from 'innoncent' child in Faerun to young teenager under one of the greatest devils of the hells and stayed there for a long time. We also know (it is explicitly stated in this very game in fact) mortals' souls, upon their detah, either go to their "favorite" deity, or loose themselves (as would happen to Durge without Jergal's intervention tbn) so picking a god looks like an imperative first step in order to secure his own soul from Raphael, looking from the young boy's perspective. Now Baine, same as Gorstah, tend to desire everything under his dominion, and is in a dire situation ; so maybe both of them made a commercial deal rather than just naturally finding each other. That idea is strengtened for me by the time spent in the House of Hope, which I believe cannot be a time void of learning if you're a handpicked mortal. I don't picture Gortash's parents as likely worshipping the dead tyrant, and it seems to me that Baine would be the most aligned for a mortal with both such background and endless lust for power - imagine, maybe Gortash is even bargaining with Baine on a daily basis rather than devotly worshipping him. Copper for your thoughts people ?
I love Gortash because he’s connected to literally everyone (except Tav, who at least in my playthrough was a total unknown all the way up to their meeting) and everything.
Mop-haired, jungle-chested man with five o'clock shadow convinces city to give up basic human rights with his army of robots and a really smooth accent.
You left out the incredibly disturbing way that Steel Watchers get their autonomy. The Gondians designed them originally to be hollow mechs piloted from the inside by small people such as gnomes or halflings. Gortash took their idea and added both necromancy and mind control into the plans. He gathered fresh corpses, forced illithid tadpoles into them, cut out their brains, reanimated them, and stuffed their bodies in the metal suits. The brains would then take orders from the Absolute and pass the movements on to their respective zombie-propelled Steel Watchers. This info can be found in the journal of a dead worker in the Steel Watch factory, in the room before the titan fight.
This was the best RPG I ever played the best of villains I’ve ever seen. I didn’t need a boss transformation like Dragon Ball Z he was a man arrogance took him down. Every villain in this game was crazy to me and I didn’t want to kill them. I wanted to them to exist for a sequel. What an amazing game. This was an amazing video all your videos are thank you
Something the game doesn't do that does Bane a disservice is explaining how much Bane works behind the scenes. At least in 3rd edition lore the “advisor” that controls everything without anyone knowing is as good if not superior to any ruling tyrant. Hiding in plain sight is one of the greatest achievements for a Bane follower.
After you talk about the Elder Brain, I suggest finishing off the current Baldurs Gate villain archive with the devil you know, Raphael! God, he is a treat!
Bane likes ambitious and power hungry people. Especially ones that are capable like Gortash. Also you can throw the bombs that come out. Just make sure you don’t do it directly with the shield on. Also in higher difficulties he does have an avatar form.
They updated the Gortash boss fight for honor mode! As soos as you hit Gortash with your first attack he transforms and grows in size and become the Apostle of Bane! i highly reccomend to check it out if you were disappointed in his og fight
I think at least in the releases of the game, Gortash was able to turn into a bigger version of him that was harder to fight at a certain point in his boss fight. Oddly enough, I only experienced this once on my first playthrough.
Bane seems to look for people that show initiative and become a tyrant on their own before he makes them his chosen. He probibly saw Gortash become a kingpin and said "you want a power boost and cultists that do whatever you want?"
I liked Gortash and I feel he didnt overstay his welcome. That being said, I completely agree about Bane. Myrkul's avatar during the Ketheric fight was one of the most badass cut scenes ever. Bhaal had his temple and Orin turned into the slayer. Bane got... nada. I love the dieites in BG3. Shar, Myrkul, Bhaal, Jergal, Mystra. There's two I wish we had heard from... Bane and Selune. Bane for obvious reasons, he needed a temple. He also should have made an appearance with Gortash at some point. And Selune because we bested her evil sister and saved her daughter... But otherwise, I liked Gortash's role. I didnt mind the Dead 3 falling to their own huberis. It was very human and contrasted nicely with the Souless threat of the Netherbrain.
Gortash was my favorite character, not because of what he was, but what he represented: societal progress, as had he suceeded he planned to qoncer all of sword coast (see invasion plans across the game) and whit steelwatch (that could be upgradead to be even better military force) such a military, would be far better at averting demonic invasions/god plots/illithid invasions/drow plots/etc than your usual police/military forces that have stagnated since setting started. basically any threath that makes up an adventure requiring heroes, would need to overcome that preventetive force first, thus saving far more lives and money that would have to be taxed from civilians to repair damages. In essence for there to be adventures like baldurs gate or any adventure module, or game, in focused societies need to be weak and incabable of protecting themselfs (just think if 9 11 like scenarios were common enogh to happen bianually and rather than society evolving to prevent such, it would mearly react by hiring merceneries to kill ones responcible only after catastrophy and you basically have an idea of what forgotten realms broght to Real life would be), which is of cource to apeal to players ego, to be hero, to be one thats needet to save eavryone, or damn them. Therefore societal progress will always need to be represented as morally evil, to keep setting/adventures/hasbro revenue going. If raphael suceeds he simply becomes another god in Panthéon too removed from setting as to not upset balance of gods set by AU. If orin suceeds she will simply murder to please her father until put down. If Ketheric suceeds it means nothing as his ambitions died whit his family. If Elder brain suceeds, itll just be retconned. But if endver gortash suceeds, that would mean kind of change that hasbro, dosent want you to even think about and that makes him most compelling villain/would be saviour in long time.
I’ve actually never heard the interactions between Karlach and Gortash right before you fight him and destroying the steel watch. I always just used the bomb you’re supposed to use to blow up the foundry to blow up Gortash without ever having to enter combat
it has *always* relentlessly bothered me that the game tries to imply time and time again, he's a dashing man with quick wit, charm, and an easy smile, he's beautiful. and ever since the first moment I saw him all I can think about as he speaks is how he looks more and more like a hot topic reject every time I see him. what part of this is beautiful.
I think Bane didn't give him a proper transformation, aside from becoming a bit of a giant, because Bane already knew he had lost, so had already discarded him.
I do love him, but Larian dropped the ball on his death if you side with him. One of the advantages the Chosen Bane is a continuous effect of Mind Wipe, which makes the person immune to mind reading and psychic damage. It’s such a powerful affect that it takes a Wish spell to make overcome. Now I can’t blame Lorian for not knowing every bit of lore, it still feels weird that the one way he was killed was specifically in a way that shouldn’t have worked.
Meeting Gortash with Karlach in your party (which she is 99.9 of the time with me) as a redeemed Durge is even spicier because we get the vision of who we are just before meeting him and he reveals even more to us. I'm just glad that everyone's 'How dare you not tell me you were allied with Gortash!' reactions were taken away Killing him right away is such a waste, I prefer to do him last because then I can save he Gondians and have my homie Barcus Wroot in charge of the Ironhand Gnomes. Also, I like to fight him and have Karlach make the last few whacks.
I did everything to sabotage gorty in baldurs gate but free the gondians from the iron throne. I blew up the foundry and everything first and when he threatened to blow it up I took his word. He is such a lil shit and i love it
... clearly Gortash came into contact with Bane via his early dealings with the helliron. This interrupted the trade of the Zhentarim, a faction directly under the control of Darkhold and Fzoul. Its not hard to imagine that Bane's servants took notice of the young man interrupting their trade... and likely via that, Bane also saw Gortash. Its granted not stated, but loredumping is fun ^^

I wanted so much more for Gortash.
Both endings didn't do him justice.
durgetash mention in the villainpedia, let's go
So unfortunate that the upper city was cut. Could of had an even better plot line for Gortash and Karlach.
@ ah. Thanks for clarifying. Maybe we’ll get some through mods.
These videos are always a treat Ghost, your enthusiasm and love for these games always shines through in your narration.
"A sort of whimpering death to one of the most powerful men the city of Baldur's Gate had ever seen."
Honestly, I kinda dig that more than if he had some kind of possession/ultimate form boss fight.
Oh heck yeah, I was about to head to bed. I am going to watch this when I get up. Thank you Ghostcharm!
What is sleep?

For the weak.
Crazy, I just woke up
That is very cute of you ngl
Wake up, honey. New Ghostcharm video just dropped.
I lost my sweet dog Autumn yesterday.. 15 years old, loved her like nothing else. Thanks for the upload, Ghost. Need to lose myself for a while.
That her on your profile?
@@Hoonter_jne no thats my other buddy, Rocky. Him and Autumn were so close.
sorry for your loss ❤
Hey man, I'm 32 years old and my girlfriend of 10 years lost her dog recently. I only saw him once or twice a week but it's been the hardest loss I've ever had to deal with. Hope you're okay, buying a digital picture frame to see all his pictures scroll by every day makes me happy though. Any way to remember him positively, he loved us more than words can describe.
I'm sorry for your loss, remember the most important thing is to think about the time you had not the time you've been forsaken.
Honor their memory with laughter don't let it rust from tears.
Love your Baldur’s Gate stuff, Sarevok, Jonn, the Dead Three Chosen, the whole gambit, but I’m also very excited to see what’s next!
I wish Gortash had a real ending, where you actually end up ruling with him, both as Durge and Tav
Orin: daughter of murder
Thorm: undead general
Gortash: some dude
My first playthrough was a monk, so when Gortash offered his deal i just said "silly Gortash i'm a principled monk" and didn't think much of it. However, i'm now playing as a renegade dark urge, and the speech really caught me off-guard. Gortash really talks to you sincerely like you're a friend, and the revelation that you're the masterminds behind the Absolute is very powerful. It almost made me reconsider going through with my good guy playthrough. I realized my character was not just a mindless killer. Just like Gortash, he was smart and ambitious, and he *deserved* to control his own project. The game kept repeating through flashbacks and visions that he hated Orin, but it's during this speech that, as the player, i really thought of Orin as an undeserving traitor.
ah yes the chosen with the least amount of time dedicated to him
kethric had one of the most badass intros i have seen in a while and all of act two hyping him up
orin has ties to durge and even if you arnt durge she shows up everywhere do to being a shapeshifter and steals away a party member
gortash feels like he is barely in the game in comparison
Very underrated villain. Jason Isaac’s is always a win
hardly ever comment on yt but had to drop some appreciation. your vids on the chosen have been such good content. i've probably listened to the Ketheric one a dozen times to fall asleep. was so hyped when this one dropped today, instantly listened to it all, loved it. amazing work man
Lovely getting this deep-dive!
Sitting here at the airport about to board a 12 hour flight to Japan. This is going to make one of those 12 hours ZOOM by. Thanks Ghost!
Just make sure to turn to airplane mode and not forget to turn off your data so you wont get charged much
Thank you for this. This guy is definitely my favorite villain in the game, and I also felt he was drastically shortchanged. I would absolutely love to know how you personally would flesh him out and change things if someone just handed it to you and said, here, have at it.
This is great, love the focus you’ve had on the Baldur’s gate series, but give the people and myself what we want: Legacy of Kain
Very cool series! I would love to see a DOS2 mini series on Lucian, Dallis and Braccus!
I can still fix Orin
...Like... like with a hammer?
@@fenrirswolh3no his third leg
More likely she'll fix you... With her blade in your innards😅
You're gonna need some more help than the absolute can give you.
Yeah so what she stabbed me in my sleep. You just don't understand our relationship!
2:25 I love how you used the background version of Raphael's theme here.
51:25 but he does have a transformation. So I'm a bit confused by what Ghostcharm means.
Maybe he meant that he wanted a more drastic transformation?
I guess the difference is that, unlike Ketheric, you can defeat/incapacitate Gortash before he ever has a chance to use the ability linked to the transformation.
I think he just never activated it, given how he talked about the fight and the footage, he may just killed him too fast each time.
His is by far the most underwhelming tranformation so i can that being the reason
Gortash looks like a wizard version of Ramsay bolton lol
I gotta see a Gaunter O’Dimm villainpedia out of you man
Can't wait to watch this while falling asleep tonight. You are my new favourite channel
Mop-haired, jungle-chested man with five o'clock shadow convinces city to give up basic human rights with his army of robots and a really smooth accent.
Oh I wish you explaining this lore for 3 or days. I would listen to it all! ❤
I was just watching another video of yours, so happy to see this one finally came out
You left out the incredibly disturbing way that Steel Watchers get their autonomy.
This was an amazing video all your videos are thank you
BRO IS PUMPING THESE OUT KEEP IT UP MY GUY!
I was waiting for this for sooo long ! Thank you
I pray you make one about raphael. everybody loves that bastard.
Bane doesn't use the color purple for anything though. That's the color of the heretic Cyric, and the betrayer Shar.
Looking forward to seeing the videos about the Emperor and Raphael!
Last time i was served so many consecutive bangers was that pub crawl i did in Germany. Rest up, king. The trilogy is complete.
Handsome Jack seems like a perfect fit for this series
Wish there was a way to keep him alive he was a individual that keeps his word.
Thank you for this very complete analysis ❤
Bane likes ambitious and power hungry people. Especially ones that are capable like Gortash.
Also you can throw the bombs that come out. Just make sure you don’t do it directly with the shield on. Also in higher difficulties he does have an avatar form.
Great job! I loved these exposès for the BG3 villains.
This, very trustworthy man, desrves an (infernal) mech suit, tyrants love mech suits!
Bane seems to look for people that show initiative and become a tyrant on their own before he makes them his chosen. He probibly saw Gortash become a kingpin and said "you want a power boost and cultists that do whatever you want?"
33:45 it cracks me up everytime they just let that artist be witness to this and don't like, kill them as they run away
The dark Urge video is gunna be S+ tier
I can’t wait for a video on The Emperor!
I really like your vids man, keep it up. One of my fav accts on youtube here.
I would absolutely love if you did a video on Raphael!
It was very human and contrasted nicely with the Souless threat of the Netherbrain.
yet another banger of a video from our boi ghost the host who does the most!
Mmm hotdogs.
They literally could just have modeled Gortash based on his voice actor.
I can't wait for the 3 hour supercut.
22:08 I SCRUMPT
Thank you for another great video Ghost! Cant wait for your next:)
I’ve actually never heard the interactions between Karlach and Gortash right before you fight him and destroying the steel watch. I always just used the bomb you’re supposed to use to blow up the foundry to blow up Gortash without ever having to enter combat
Bane approached Gortash in a dream if I recall correctly. The narrator comments this when inspecting one of the busts in his chambers.
Aww I loved doing the Iron Throne! It was so satisfying when I finally saved all the prisoners
I legitimately do not understand how any player could have him in front of them at the coronation and let him speak, much less let him live.
The only reason the Gortash and Durge ship has any ground is because Durge has a journal entry apologizing to Bhaal for having a crush on Gortash.
Are we not gonna talk about that little fire wisp in the Act3 cutscene? Cuz it's pretty funny.
it has *always* relentlessly bothered me that the game tries to imply time and time again, he's a dashing man with quick wit, charm, and an easy smile, he's beautiful.
and ever since the first moment I saw him all I can think about as he speaks is how he looks more and more like a hot topic reject every time I see him.
what part of this is beautiful.
I think Bane didn't give him a proper transformation, aside from becoming a bit of a giant, because Bane already knew he had lost, so had already discarded him.
The goat posted once again
31:24 I almost fell off my chair and died
I'm just glad that everyone's 'How dare you not tell me you were allied with Gortash!' reactions were taken away
Killing him right away is such a waste, I prefer to do him last because then I can save he Gondians and have my homie Barcus Wroot in charge of the Ironhand Gnomes.
My favorite of the Chosen Three 😊
