Faces of Africa - Mangelepa: Music, Medicine of the soul

- In the 70s and 80s Mangelepa was a very popular group of musicians in East Africa. In a day they would have two crowds of people who'd get at their venue to watch them perform. Their music wowed people.
40 years later, their music is listened to even more. But they, Mangelepa have not attracted cash flow as they attracted crowds. They languish in poverty. Like many great African musicians, they wonder how & when they'll benefit from their extremely popular music.
I would like us fans to launch an online petition to have the ministry of culture declare Mangelepa a national heritage, upon which they can be awarded an adequate state-funded stipend, to make their old age comfortable than it now is, and have them do the work they do best for the remaining rest of their lives.
Who seconds?
this is very good idea cause not fair for those legendry to leave tha life
A true fan will never forget Manglepa people
They arrived as Baba Gaston's ensemble Baba National...and at an early concert at the then Kenya Polytechnic Hall our verdict was that the boys will definitely leave a lasting mark on Kenya's popular dance fabric....and this they certainly did as the brake away Mangelepa....post the Hi -Fives of an earlier generation, they became the next Kenya based Congolese music sensation...and on this journey the other Congolese outfits joined the fray.....( Boma Liwanza with its star laden cast, then unbeknownst to many did a brief appearance and then left the scene for other pastures)...and the competition virtually went viral !!!!
Congolese Rhumba music was and will remain the best music in Africa. Mangelepa asante Saana for your music. I grew up listening to your Music in Amins era. And am still loving your music now. Be blessed from Canada.
Our school came to show ground but instead we went to look for mangelepa at garden square and the school bus almost left us. We were given a severe punishment when we went back to school. It was in 1977 in high school.
No matter what today's generation says, they can't equal this music!
Vraiment, these gentlemen have made an indelible mark on the African music scene!
I recently spoke to a Congolese who grew partly in DRC and partly in Europe in the 1970s. He had never heard of Mangelepa before in spite of being a music fun, yet (I think) this was the Band that compelled Rhumba Maestro Luambo Makiadi to make several trips to Kenya because it was his important market and he must have realised that some other young group had distabilised the market and was taking a share of his market
First time to hear their music. Beautiful music indeed. I still wonder how we missed these genius creators of music. From South Africa.
Mangelepa will forever be my Band. I danced them at Garden Square 1977-80 every weekend. Poor guys!
That is so true 👍 medicine of the soul indeed!
M. Musa Mangelepa was born from Baba Gaston Band - Ilunga wa Ilunga (RIP). Baba Gaston band came to Tanzania from Congo in early 70s and played in Dar es Salaam and various towns of Tanzania. I attended one of their live show - dance in 1974 at Shinyanga. my understanding the band later went to Kenya and from their Mangelepa was formed (kabila kabanze, Lovy longomba etc were some of the musician). Their hits include Embakasi, Mimba, Nyako konya .
Une trouvaille pour moi, c'est aujourd'hui que je découvre ce groupe. Profetia!
powerful vibes. still my favourite hits!
These guys are great. Always listening this music. DAWA YA MAISHA
Woie. The way they were talented and did not have much financial gain. At least they entertained.👍
So happy to see these guys are still going, even though they are still not being paid well. Anybody out there have that live recording of "Walter" from the 70s???
The days that were so much fun. Killing lyrics by Mangelepa, Mazembe, Lipua Lipua. Where can we find such in Nairobi nowardays. I will make sure I go there and have so....so...much fun. Let me know please.
We celebrate your legacy
Fred tell them...rumba is special
PIGA ROHO PASI...... MANGELEPA NI YETU.
nice
They should do remixes of these 10 most popular songs with popular musicians and re-release the music.
Unfortunately they might spoil the songs with ndombolo. They might ndombolize them.
@@simenyasikhulu "Ndombolize" lol!
@@elywananda look at the way Mangeleppa used to play their songs. They used to sing and give stories in the songs, those who understand Lingala and Kuswahili could understand the messages. Then came the sebene section which was played in a gentle way. Then there was the part for the rhythm guitar to shine. When they ndombolize it they just have to sing for a short section of the song and then move to seben with shounting. But then we have fans of ndombolized music.
@@simenyasikhulu Kwa kweli! Perfectly said 🙏🏿The classic era will always reign. I'm trying to get my Swahili up to scratch, and the lyrics of these Zilizopendwa classics are so beautiful. Plus the sweet vocals and melodies plus tnstruments. It's on a different planet to most of today's popular sounds.
