Canon 600mm f/4 IS in Namibia with Cheetahs and Ghosts

- The Canon 600mm f/4 IS lens is an incredible lens. It's the top of the line Canon wildlife photography lens, and I have it in Namibia!
This is version ii of the Canon 600mm f/4 IS, and to be honest after using and reviewing it in Namibia I'm not even sure why they needed to make a second version of it. This wildlife photography lens is fast, sharp, and the colour contrast is oh so beautiful.
This morning in Namibia I took out the Canon 600mm to photograph some of the rescue Cheetahs that are found on the land around Quiver Tree rest camp here in Namibia. I was a bit intimidated by the 600mm Canon lens at first, but after getting a grip on it pretty quickly I found myself in love with the wildlife photography lens.
After our morning with the Cheetahs, I took the Canon 600mm lens to the coast of Namibia where we went looking for seals, flamingos and a ghost town.
We ended up at the town of Kolmanskop, one of the most photographed places in Namibia. It was incredible. And the light was perfect. It made for the perfect place to end an amazing day.
Hope you're loving the Premieres. If you're not, I've love to hear why below. PERSONALLY, I'm LOVING the ability to interact with people live as the video goes online. But, I understand that it's not for everyone. If you have strong feelings one way or another, drop them below, I'm always open to constructive criticism to keep the community happy!
I don't like them, i see you on my recommended and think "ahhh a new video !! :D " but then i have to wait haha the videos are great man i love them !
I don't like the feature. I understand that it's nice for a creator to make an "appointment" with their audience and be able to chat,... But for me it's quite annoying to have a premiere tag within my Subscriptions and even if i love to watch the content, give feedback, ask questions,.... i dont have the need to comunicate every day extensive or personal with the creators. If youtube gives me the possibility to manage the subcription better, im ok with it. But if youtube keeps pushing these features, i would ask you to do it only for special videos, where there is more to discuss,... There are daily 3-6 premiere tags in my subscription and thats a little to much for me. Its simple to "exausting" to always get exited for a new video, to then realise its not online yet.
Hello Brendan Sir how are you ....i wish you all your works goes well ...
Sir do you edit yours photos..?
I don't want to ask this question but when i show your pic to my friend won't believe so please sir tall me ......
Since you ask, I'm finding the 'premier' thing quite annoying, as more UA-camrs start using it. Just one more needless notification in my day. So yeah not for me, but I'll enjoy your work regardless. Notifications are easy enough to switch off if it comes to it.
Brendan, one piece of advice when shooting wildlife. Try getting as much at eye level with your subjects as you possibly can. You probably were ok with the cheetah, but looked like you were standing up way too tall with the flamingoes. With birds on the ground, you may even be well served to get on the ground and be flat on your belly. You’ll get some great perspectives. Also you may have missed a trick with the cheetahs. These are captive animals and they get real close! Why didn’t you use your wide angle to get some epic perspectives? I guess you may have been constrained with your group around - but do try the next time around. The cheetahs are real friendly and you can pretty much get their faces in the lens!
Oh, if you're doing the living desert tour at Swakop, make sure you're lying flat in the sand to make your photos and shoot wide if you want some different perspectives. Everyone has the tight closeup.
„Krankenhaus“ actually means hospital in german 🇩🇪
Brendan, now fake cheetahs, wtf?
Always look forward to your vids, Brendan! One thing I would like is maybe an extra second to view your images and explore them more fully ....if I blink, they're gone lol 🌟😉
Shooting animals, you better be using continuous burst mode and a fast SDCard. Just sayin', especially for fast movers. 😁
🤠📷🦅
haha krankenhaus is German for hospital
Very nice!!!! And let's not forget "Steve, Steve, Steve" 😋 Looking forward for your other videos!
Alan Alan Alan Alan Alan
LOL...welcome to my world....I use a 600mm all the time in bird photography. It's a beast.
Ditto :-) 600 E FLED is the Shizzzzzzzy
First time my wife said no to a purchase was this lens 😂
Hahahaha
600 mm or 800 mm lens no primary for widlife.. better resulst better to come closer with 300 -400 mm lens dont have atmosferic distthortion... :D
Less Yakkin More Action.
You don't show enough actual using of the lens. Also not too many frame filling shots.
BvS thats what you call a lens. Must have arms like Popeye after carrying that about. Great images of the cheetahs. That one licking its lips looked liked it was sizing you up for dinner lol
Thanks dude! Yeah, the 600mm made me stronger, but eating every jelly tot in Namibia also made me fatter haha
Not to much about the lens and a lot about being in a place most of us will never have a chance to get too.
Walking through those 3 doors with the gimbal... 🙌🏻
I wanted to see a still shot of that. Frames on frames on frames 🖼
I thought of the same thing
Nek Lamp he may shoot it in the am with better light.
Wait until tomorrow's episode, then ;)
That was the shot and he totally missed it...Walking and talking to fast, slow down dude and look around!
Zeppy haha. Pump your breaks man. They were going back.
Our house in Spain has that much sand in it if we don’t sweep every day, ok maybe I’m exaggerating just a tad. Loving those Cheetah shots.
hahahhaha, you should sell it as a tourist spot.
I own this prodigy lens
What body did you use?
Need a bigger tripod for that puppy
What about the new 600mm f/4 III that weighs less than 7 lbs?
Only weight is profit
So, you missed the perfect shot, because you weren't set up in time? I have two words for you...BRIDGE CAMERA!!
no. I missed the perfect shot because I was teaching. Which, I'm OK with. And, a bridge camera wouldn't have been quick enough to grab that shot either, I don't think.
@@BrendanvanSon I apologise. I have a thing about bridge cameras. I realise they are nowhere near as good as thousands of $/£'s of camera equipment. I also realise that it's not about how much you spend on your equipment. It's about being in the right place at the right time, to get the shot you want. I was just facetious.
I've had the 600mm f/4L IS USM since 2011. I've shot countless images with it and it never fails to impress me with the quality of the images that it captures. Only thing I can complain about is the weight. A good tripod is mandatory. Hand holding it will lead to your arms falling off at the shoulders 😋.
Watching the desert reclaim that settlement, I can't help thinking of the poem "Ozymandius"...
I just returned from Vermont with the newest 600mm to shoot autumnal scenes. While it was fun to have it was very tough to use. The conditions were very windy and I had it paired with a 5dsr so the slightest vibration made the photos unusable. I have a very stable tripod and gearhead, I locked up the mirror and used a delay on the shutter. (stopped using a trigger because I thought that might have been catching the wind) Also, I did not have a neck strap on the camera either. Anyway, I was shocked at how many images were throwaways. looking back, I probably should have shot without the lens hood, the thing is massive and was probably catching the wind. Hopefully I will get another chance with that beast under better conditions ;) Anyway, great content and thanks for sharing.
Great video and impressions. Yeah...a 600mm is simply amazing. Once you tried these mega-primes from Canon or Nikon, you hardly will be ever happy again with anything below :) I purchased a used Canon 600mm 4.0 II made in 2017 and in top shape for about 6.5k Euro. That is a great deal. No regret at all.
The new 600 Mark 3 is much lighter, enough to use it on that poor ballhead of yours aha
It's probably not even out yet but if you try it you'll shit.
Loving the content, feeling inspired to get out and shoot some landscapes. Took a couple of shots while on holiday in Croatia earlier this month, I’m an amateur with no qualifications and with an entry level camera. But I’m getting great shots as I follow the advice given by you on your channel and Thomas Heaton on his. Hopefully one day I can turn it into a profession like you guys and make something of it. Thank you for the all inspiring content!
Hi Brendan, interesting insight on the 600mm. I've got the older non-IS version, despite the weight they are a great tool for wildlife photography allowing to make pictures without disturbing the animal. With some practice you would be able to lock on to your subject very quickly, it's just another skill to learn. Enjoy :)
When a cat big or small licks their face like that and are in easy stroll that usually means they just got done eating and the next thing they usually do is sit down and have a good clean. Even my house cats act like that after eating.
Hey ever tried Photo Pills ap great for planning shots well worth the 10 bucks
Hi Brendan. Who left the door open? Someone's gonna have a hellova job sweeping that sand out!!!Keep 'em coming. Rgds, JA
Wish I could rent that lens here in Spain.... max I've seen it's the 400mm. Nice vid Brendan! :)
I see your travel ball head at 2:25 in the video. Totally inadequate for a 600mm F4.
I hope Morten Hilmer can give you some tips and tricks with the 600 mm in your next workshop
Like your videos, but you can lose the hats Brendan! It's ok to be bald bro :-)
Hats are used as shade from heat, keeps sun out of eyes fo one can see.
@@ericjohnston3569 He wears his hats backwards in all his videos so his hat isn't keeping any sun off his face whatsoever!!!
@@Zeppy007 As long as I am holding a camera or even close to a camera my hat is backwards. Going for the quick shot hat beak gets in the way. Unless sun is shining then it's a pain when not on backwards. Putting your face up to camera and having beak knock camera off subject or whatever is also a pain.
Nice work!
Why didn't you rent the Mark II or III?
Not available at my guy in Namibia only has mark i. Also, this was filmed before the mark iii was released. Would love to test it out soon.
@@BrendanvanSon I recently sold my EF 100-400 II because after getting my R5 realised it's not sharp enough, now I have no wildlife lens apart from my RF 70-200, do you think it's worthwhile picking up a second hand excellent condition EF 600 f4/ L IS II USM for £6.9K? Only thing that puts me off is the age of it.
@@BrendanvanSon I just don't see a reason to get RF 100-500.
@@BrendanvanSon According to DXOMark it has 14 higher sharpness points
Yes. Get the mark ii. That's a great deal. Even the mark i was really sharp. It was just really big and the af was loud. The ii solved those things, I think.
Great video man, nice lens (y) keep workout for it :D
Now I remember why I shoot E-M1 Mk II.......I don't print much, I don't shoot much when I'm sleeping in the dark of night..............and I've shot with the 300mm f4 with the MC14 teleconverter (full frame equivalent 840mm) hand held at 1/125.........oh, it's good to be young and have a strong back ! Good for you ...........understanding Morten a bit better now ?
Haha, honestly, I don't think this 600mm is something I'd use that often. I think the 200-400 x 1.4 is a much better overall lens. And weighs so much less.
Nice video 👍🏻 love the content.
hahaha!! i think the thing that's most annoying about the music is how it doesn't match what i'm looking at on screen. as for the lens, man that's a lot to carry around. i've held one and it's heavy af. tact sharp images tho.
Yes, the music he has been using in the last few videos is awful I must say.
@ 4:50 you said the University thought their cheetahs were "feral"... did you mean "sterile"? That would explain not being prepared for reproduction. "Feral" means domestic animals returning to the wild.
Yes, sterile, hahaha. I need to sleep more.
Brendan van Son 😄😂
Brendan van Son BTW although I keep missing the premieres, please keep doing them. I love the interaction. 👍🏾
the images at 14:12 would be much better in bw. i'm surprised you didn't use a filter to cut that light.
The thing is I'm really not a BW fan. I rarely do it. I love the colour of the world and always feel like I'm losing something. I guess that's me just not being much of a minimalist.
Krankenhaus is Hospital Brendan....if you didnt already know
Haha, luckily we had a german on the trip to teach us that.
Loved this vlog!!!! So good
I own the sigma 150-600 contemporary and that is pretty good bang for buck zoom lens !
I would to use photographing wildlife in Africa !
Yup, the sigma 150-600 is a great lens. One of the participants had one, we had some back focusing issues with it. But, made some micro adjustments in camera and got some great images with it.
@@BrendanvanSon
I had the same focusing issues with my sigma. So it went back to sigma UK to be re calibrated.
It works great now and I have even put it on my Sony NEX5R vid sigma mc11 adapter and it looks mad !
Works well though !
Thanks for you reply Brendan.
Love watching your videos.
I am getting this up as a notification an hour after its published, how is that I wonder
Thanks strange, man. UA-cam really needs to get it together with their notifications.
A perfect lens!
Curious. Since most of what you're shooting on this trip is outside and in relatively decent light... why not just get a 1.4 or even a 2x telecon for your 1-400mm telephoto lens? I use a 1.4 with my sigma 150 to 500mm and as long as the light is good, I really don't see any problems. I guess if you get some great photo ops at the beginning of sunrise or the end of sunset, it might be a problem.
I HATE converters. No matter what everyone says, they hurt the image quality too much. And, putting a 1.4 on makes 400 f/5.6, 560 f/8. Naw, not for me.
@@BrendanvanSon 1.4x iii converters are excellent on Canon's latest great white primes, I use one with the 500mm L ii and do not see any noticeable drop in image quality on both the 7d ii and 5ds r.
Very cool video, Brendan! The cheetahs and the ghost town were amazing. Wish I shot the cheetahs into the backlight as well.
And really cool broll, Jodie! Good job!
I really like the premiere feature, it's nice to chat while watching the video. And I don't really get the negativity: Yeah, I can see that the notification half an hour before isn't neccessary. But honestly it doesn't change anything, the videos go online the same time as before, so if you don't like to chat before, just watch the video at the normal time.
Yeah, but I think they see the notification and that alone annoys people. Not sure how clear the notifications are.
@@BrendanvanSon Ok, I see. The first notification says the premiere will start in 30 minutes, but at the end though.
Just remember that little screw holding that gazillion dollar lens on your tripod cost about a dollar and I would not rely on it to hold that over my shoulder FYI!
You have to believe in your gear :D
One billion $
That ghost town is the coolest. Where's the broom lol
Hahaha.
I hope you have insurance on that 12,000 dollar lens.
I hope the rental company did! :D
@@BrendanvanSon You did not take out insurance for the 600 when you rented it, pretty common thing over here in US, maybe different overseas. Was protection part of the rental package?
❤👍
Thank you Brendan
Thank you Jim!
And that's how youtube became TV...
I mean, it always has been. We've always scheduled our videos. BUT, how many show producers chat with their audience AS it premieres?
@@BrendanvanSon That's true somehow. I like the interaction too! But I saw so many premiers without the host already, that it seems just like an other marketing tool and everybody is premiering their videos to gain more attention. But at the point, when everyone will do it, it will become pointless.
@@alexmeier19 Yup, I get that. The only time I'll ever premiere a video is when I'm here to chat. Otherwise, I don't see the point. I will, however, try to post the premiere later so it's not sitting here for hours like this.
@@BrendanvanSon I didn't know that's what they were. I thought they were just like the reminder for a live chat thing, but you're saying that it actually IS a live chat as well? So that seems pretty cool and not just an annoying thing in my notifications. I'll have to take advantage of it someday, now that I know what it is.
Where are the shots from the cheetahs with the 600?
Yes, they were.
Brendan van Son I did not doubt there weren’t any but it is in the title and at no minute in the video I saw them, maybe the player has gone funny. At what min (this is my where part) are they?
Dimitris Tsagdis at 2:28
Tnx michael, I played it on my phone and I see them; and I played it again on my computer and I see them there too (along with the meerkats); there must have been something funny on the computer play. The clip seems to have jumped over a few of the early sections but after that it was well. Maybe it was smt funny with the live/premiering thing that messed it up.
You should be careful with this lens in Africa. Cause someone might think you are carrying an RPG....
You're probably 14 but i'll say this anyways: try to keep your ignorance to yourself, until you know better.
Premier crap just upload vids man.....
Video is not here yet, don't use youtube premiere it's a crap feature.
Sorry you don't like it. But, it really is awesome. The option to interact with people is so much better. Personally, I love it.
@@BrendanvanSon No one likes to wait for video. If you want to keep the interaction, use the premiere with 5min delay only.
@@NaviRetlav It's a good solution. The only issue is that UA-cam takes time to process a video and it could come out with poor quality. But, maybe 10 minutes would be wise. That said, whether I set the premiere or not, it ALWAYS goes online at the same time. Every day for 2 years at the same time. So, it's scheduled one way or another.
Personally, I think it's on UA-cam. They shouldn't be notifying people about the video this early.
Great images and that lens is fantastic. Normally I don’t mind the music but this music is getting a little annoying. Maybe less volume
Good to hear you back off a bit on those of us who know what we’re doing with an expensive long lens. AND can afford it
