Interesting version of the guess who here ... Late Domenic Triano guitar / Bill Wallace on bass G.P drums and if Burton Cummings they were too break up not too long after 😢
One magic night, I think in October of 2001, I saw the Cummings, Bachman, Peterson, Wallace and McDougall line up. It was an absolutely dream come true. Wished I had a chance to see the line up with Winter and Leskew, too. Kudos to Burton for keeping the band “true” along the way. What Kale has done to adulterate their amazing Legacy is beyond a travesty.
The legacy (insomuch as the average person is unaware of the numerous line-up changes and who played on what) is intact. Nothing that happened after 1975 matters.
So I worked at a radio station in Winnipeg in the mid-1970s and once interviewed Kale on-air, as he taking his first ersatz Guess Who on the road. I asked him "What do you say to people who say it's not right for you to tour as the Guess Who, since none of the principals are in the band?" (Something, but it's precisely the question I asked.) He looked at me with absolutely murderous eyes and responded, "No one's ever said that to me." That btw is an exact quote. I thought he was gonna deck me.
This line-up of the GW gets short shrift, but it's the only version I saw in person, and I was so impressed by Domenic Troiano that I named the son my ex-wife was carrying after him. My Domenic is now a new grandfather...how time flies
Domenic Troiano was a friend of my late father's. He attended my bar-mtizvah where I got to meet him once. At age 13, I didn't know anything about him. Today at age 57, I'm a fan.
He is interred at the same mausoleum as my father in law. Every time I visit my father in law, I pass by Domenic's tomb and thank him for his musical contributions. He was an incredible guitarist.
They just asked Dolly Parton to be inducted into RHOF but she told them she doesn't deserve it, with so many that do and her being a country singer, she respectibly turned them down 👍🏼 She did mention that she might have to do a rock album now... 😂
This is basically the transition period of Randy , who had already left The Guess Who to go form BTO .. The guitar player in this video is Toronto based guitarist Dominic Troiano ,, who incidentally was a killer guitar player 👌
@@beatmastert Yes. This was the final lineup before Burton went solo. Greg left in 1972 and was replaced by Donnie McDougall from 1972-74. Kurt then left with Donnie in 1974 and Dominic joined for the last two albums. Bassist Bill Wallace took over from Jim Kale in 1972

Be gone you punkers, thumbs downers and other haters. Every great band has at least one clunker. Greatness is never all perfect. This Guess Who is as good as any other version. Even without Randy Bachman, they were a great band. Burton Cummings voice is a gem, truly the most unrated vocalist ever. Too bad the current legal situation is going on, making money off a tribute band tarnishes both Burton & Randy
Please notice the great Domenic Troiano played Patially through a leslie organ spinning speaker ( right behind him). Gave him a very unique sound. Saw him with Bush at the Bitter End West in L.A. Fabulous band!!!
Yup. I understand Bush had the Canadian copyright to the name, yielding a conflict with the English band of the same name. Dominic Troiano, owner of the Canadian copyright, eventually relented.
SRV used a Leslie speaker on some of his tracks as well, most notably "Cold Shot." It's not the speaker itself that spins, though, it's a foam cylinder with various different sized/shaped cutouts that spins in front of the actual speaker. That's what gives organs their particular "wailing," almost siren-like sound. I actually got to play through a Leslie cab once. We were hosting an afternoon jam at a local blues club, and the sound guy asked me if I wanted to try out that evening's main act's Leslie. If course I jumped at the chance, but because the speaker was hidden under the front of the stage, my drummer bitched and moaned about "not being able to hear me."🤣 I mean, he's sitting right next to my 50 watt, 4x10" tube combo, and he claims he can't hear me!🤣

More recently, I heard 'Hand Me Down World' on the radio. It just juiced me & I said "fook me, that band was great"- I forgot how great.... That led to me buying a 5 CD set called Original Album Classics, put out by Epic, I believe. (I also have the same sets for Jeff Beck & Argent...) I am on a total Guess Who venture now !! God, the album tracks, like Sour Suite & Palmyra ? Whew !!! Good God damn, they were great !! They totally fit my early '70s sensibilities, from Joe Walsh, Zappa, Genesis, Yes, Steely Dan, ect.... 🚬😎👍
Same here, I only had Wheatfield Soul and the greatest hits, then I got that 5 cd set. Slept on it for a bit, then saw Robert Lawson’s book Wheatfield Empire for sale on Amazon and said what the hey and bought it. Then reading along to the book and listening to the albums, I ended up falling in love with all their albums. What an awesome band
This was a highlight from the Flavours record and gave me hope for this version of the band. Burton spoke kindly of Dom's great playing, but had simply lost his passion for the Guess Who brand and the lure of a solo career. Then saw Dom and his bands on the club circuit around Toronto. He was an amazing player and a wonderful, humble gentleman!
In recent years, Burton has not spoken so fondly of this version of the Guess Who and the new sound. Personally, I liked some of it and saw the potential, but other aspects of the Dom era were just not compatible with the Guess Who sound.
You know, for the time, the GW really rocked hard. I really like this version with DT. His guitar work really has some hair on it and that makes GW rock harder.
I actually saw Dominic with the James Gang in Omaha. He kicked ass bigtime...so much so, I wondered how Edgar Winter and his crew were going to being able to take the stage. But of course, Winter, Dan Hartman, and Ron Montrose took it to another level. Hell of a show.
True, but I would've loved to have seen them play "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature." IMHO, that has to be *the* most bad@$$ number they *ever* did! For my money, "Canned Wheat" was *the* definitive GW album. The band were at their absolute pinnacle of writing and playing prowess, and the album showed levels of subtlety and style that made it really stand out from their other works. "Minstrel Boy" and the rollicking extended romp that is "The Key" are probably the most outstanding tracks on that album, but "No Sugar Tonight/New Mother Nature" is top of the heap in terms of showcasing their immense songwriting talents. The story behind it is that Burt really loved the opening lick and wanted to go one way with it, while Bachman wanted to go another route entirely. In the end, they agreed to do both, with Burt's version first and Randy's second. Or at least that's what I heard, way back in the early 1970s.😉 Still an awesome performance from one of Canada's true pioneers of rock!
@@ogam5 Damn straight! There were literally dozens of amazing bands from Canada back then, some of whom achieved massive success in the US and internationally as well. Canada was positively overflowing with towering talents back then, from Rush to Triumph, Max Webster to Frank Marino/Mahogany Rush, April Wine to Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and many more, the list just goes on and on. Truly an epic time for Canada and Canadian music fans. I feel positively blessed to have lived in those tumultuous times.😁
@@cbotten106 Honestly, most of that promotion happened after the federal.government enacted the so-called "Can-con" rules. Suddenly, Canadian television and radio stations were scrambling to find Canadian talent, and a whole recording industry sprang up almost overnight. I once watched a documentary about a Quebecois band, Harmonium, touring US colleges and universities in the 1970s, and Rene Levesque even accompanied them on part of their visit to California. It was strange think of American students digging a French Canadian band, but there it was on film!😉
You know Domenic Troiano ibecame familiar with only as a new guitarist for the James Gang replacing Joe Walsh...He in my estimation ,was not given his due back then and its a shame...hewas a very talented player .....The James Gang in their short time was privelaged to have 3 great players including Dom
He is outstanding. I really wish this particular line-up of the Guess Who had stayed together longer. Think they could have produced some really strong stuff, and Troiano seemed like a good fit.
When I got Dominic's album in 72 with the mugshot of him with this customized Tele, it intrigued the hell out of me. No question, he was doing some very cool stuff.

I can actually remember seeing this on TV in the ' 70s . Unusual version , as Burton is playing piano . All the live versions I have seen , he plays rhythm guitar .
The man who is in charge of the HOF has had a dislike for The Guess Who and will never accept them for that honor that they deserve according to Randy Bachman.
Burton may not love the Troiano fusion/prog era of the Guess Who but they dabbled in doing things like Long Gone with goofy things like Friends of Mine or Goin' A Little Crazy.
@@damnyankeefl You are talking to a career musician, slugger. Peterson can play all he wants, and can certainly earn a living. Even without Randy Bachman, they were a great band. Burton Cummings voice is a gem, truly the most unrated vocalist ever. Too bad the current legal situation is going on, making money off a tribute band tarnishes both Burton & Randy
One word, "Great".
Dom ripped it!
Wow 🤩 I guess I thought they were in the R&R Hall Of Fame....✌️❤️❤️❤️❤️ Burton Cummings!
If you can find the Bush CD, these live tracks - recorded in LA - are added as a bonus. ua-cam.com/video/08PIUT2oDQ4/v-deo.html
If course I jumped at the chance, but because the speaker was hidden under the front of the stage, my drummer bitched and moaned about "not being able to hear me."🤣
I mean, he's sitting right next to my 50 watt, 4x10" tube combo, and he claims he can't hear me!🤣
He may not look it in this video, but bassist Bill Wallace was eventually a schoolteacher. He was granted a leave of absence for a Guess Who reunion.
Too bad his drinking and bitterness caught up with him. Hopefully he's learned from it
Very underrated band, should be in HOF! They are putting in too many non-rock artists these days. Country and Gospel have their own HOFs
Yes let alone the rappers. I want actual musicians unless it is comedy 95% of it sucks.
@@rurdy2rk380 they should be called Music HOF!
@@speedracer2336 For sure I am watching Thorogood and Jefferson Starship and Airplane. Not sure what a lot of this generations head spinnin a** slappin crap is all about? I was fortunate enough to see the Guess Who a few times yes its sucks to get old. Have a good morning.
Along with to many Crappers.
How can this have so few views? I don't understand it. And yes, Garry fantastic.
"Long Gone" is quite the serving of nightmare juice. At least it opens up to give Garry some much deserved solo time.
Sounds like Zappa
Supposably it's about a former manager I think. You have got to hear the Electric Ladyland radio broadcast. This tour.

Love this vid..great band w/awesome hits! They should've been inducted in the R&R HofF long ago! Thx 4 posting this one 🙂🙂💕💕
More recently, I heard 'Hand Me Down World' on the radio. It just juiced me & I said "fook me, that band was great"- I forgot how great....
That led to me buying a 5 CD set called Original Album Classics, put out by Epic, I believe. (I also have the same sets for Jeff Beck & Argent...)
I am on a total Guess Who venture now !!
Yep I agree totally
That's awesome 👌!!!
Burton is wearing the same Suit and Shirt he wore on the cover of his 1st Solo Album.
troiano isn't even a winnipeger ffs.
superb classic rock
Ah, my Favorite Group! And Garry's drum break is Dy-No-Mite! And Yes, I'm an old drummer also. I picked up a lot of lix from that guy!
You know, for the time, the GW really rocked hard. I really like this version with DT. His guitar work really has some hair on it and that makes GW rock harder.
"Long gone" reminds me of Frank Zappa music. Saw both groups in concert.
Domenic Triano was an awesome guitarist and I loved this version of the Guess Who... A Canadian rock'n roll treasure.
Not their best lineup, they were the GW in name only by this time.
The original 4 were the best version!
I think Dominic Troiano is such an overlooked guitarist. His breaks in "Long Gone" are blistering! Check the one @ 11:32.
Fabulous clip
One of those instantly recognizable voices!
One of my all time favourite bands, and they happen to be Canadian eh!
Or at least that's what I heard, way back in the early 1970s.😉
Still an awesome performance from one of Canada's true pioneers of rock!
@@That70sGuitarist: rock pioneers - PERIOD - but, NO question; Canada contributed MIGHTILY to the genre's evolution.....
@@That70sGuitarist I think Canadian media has done a great job of promoting Canadian bands and singers and actors post WW2, tbh.
They absolutely must be put in the rock and roll hall of fame right goddamn now!
You know Domenic Troiano ibecame familiar with only as a new guitarist for the James Gang replacing Joe Walsh...He in my estimation ,was not given his due back then and its a shame...hewas a very talented player .....The James Gang in their short time was privelaged to have 3 great players including Dom
Agree Dominic did fine with James gang
8:37- "I'm not sure an exploratory jazz odyssey is right for a festival type crowd"- Spinal Tap.
Such a classic kick-azz song! Era LONG GONE!!
Outstanding video and concert. Thank you for posting this.
This edition of the Guess Who had its moments. Burton is digging in to the piano, and I love Dominec Troiano's guitar work.
This performance of Long Gone inspired me to take up drumming.
Domenic troiano great guitarist
He is outstanding. I really wish this particular line-up of the Guess Who had stayed together longer. Think they could have produced some really strong stuff, and Troiano seemed like a good fit.
What a voice. Just awesome.
WHAT A BAND !
Guess Who my first concert, before I could drive!!
When I got Dominic's album in 72 with the mugshot of him with this customized Tele, it intrigued the hell out of me. No question, he was doing some very cool stuff.
Dom had several solo LPs out over the years on smaller labels ... I got that one used for $1o
Gracias por subir este video este es uno de los grupos de toda mi vida garry peterson mi influencia para disfrutar de la batería y estudiarla otra vez gracias ya me alegraron mi dia
Wow! That’s great.
Not many videos around from Troiano’s time with the guess who. Great guitar player. Very different from Bachman.
The best music has already been done…
One of the great voices in rock. Overlooked because they stayed in Canada and didn't go south.
dominic troiano cant deny it he played a great guitar....he didnt write riffs like randy but he was no slouch
I saw Garry play with Bachman Turner Overdrive at The Boathouse in Norfolk Va. - I swear he was the best player on the stage that night.
When? i went to ODU from 80 to 84
@@guruofendtimes819 odu, OverDrive University?
@@daktarioskarvannederhosen2568 I would assume it's Old Dominion U in Norfolk.
Glamour Boy sure shines here. The character of Burton's voice always sounded like a male version of Karen Carpenter to me. Velvet smooth with a touch of vulnerability.
action from the north in 1974. HELLO WILL YOU PLEASE WELCOME RUSH
I can actually remember seeing this on TV in the ' 70s . Unusual version , as Burton
is playing piano . All the live versions I have seen , he plays rhythm guitar .
Watch the full concerts they have on here.
he plays different instruments for some songs like piano, jazz flute (Undun) & saxaphone (life in the bloodstream)
I'l like the Song,Friends of Mind..
Long Gone is probably one of their best
this is why i write songs on you tube.
Love that hot-rodded Tele.
Back when THE GUESS WHO...was THE GUESS WHO!!!
Not a throw together bunch of fake members since the original band was scrapped!!!
Garry triplets at 3:08. genius.
man i love this. hawt.
real.
Garry Petersen is a master on the drums
yes he is, but he's a shtook for dragging The GW name through the mud with these whack lineups that embarrass the band's great 70's history.
@@derhandtrommler musicians don't have retirement plans and gold watches. he''s just trying to survive
@@damnyankeefl You are talking to a career musician, slugger. Peterson can play all he wants, and can certainly earn a living. He and Kale swindled the name from Randy and Burt, and them lied to them to get into the lucrative reunion tour. That disqualifies him from acting like the GW With a bunch of ringers.
