Going undercover is legal because it involves gathering evidence against people who are already suspected of committing a crime. For example, if the police suspect a drug dealer is operating in a certain area, they may send an undercover officer to gather evidence by posing as a drug buyer.
Entrapment is illegal because it involves inducing or encouraging an individual to commit a crime they would not have otherwise committed. For example, if an undercover officer convinces someone who has no history of drug dealing to sell drugs and then arrests them, it would be considered entrapment.

I was totally going to say this! 2 major factors in kids turning out fine are 1. A father in their life/home and 2. Married parents. But I will say that if your parents aren't married, but live together and function like a married couple, I think that would work fine too. But the father is a really huge 1, for boys and girls.

My thing is police setting up an unlocked car, or selling fake drugs isn’t going to turn someone from a life of no crime to sudden crime. It’s just being done in front of the police as opposed to an actual victim.
Now there was one instance of entrapment that I do believe was wrong and was punishing good Sumatrans that I believe teaches people not to help each other. The police purposefully left a seatbelt hanging out of the car door and I think anyone that like blinked there lights at the car to let them know or something that’s technically an infraction was ticketed. And I think that was complete bogus. You’re not catching criminals then, you’re just trying to get tickets written.
    THAT was BS.
But normal stings or anything I think are fine.

See although I have no sympathy for criminals getting caught & punished but that whole thing with oh we know this is yours can be a bit tricky because cops have been caught planting evidence. Just recently I saw a video of a guy getting taken down by officers a neighbor is recording it & you can see 1 of the cops planting drugs near the guy the neighbor calls him out on it so the cop jumps up & tries to chase her. IDK what happened because the video gets cut off. Then there was a cop a few years ago that had a few complaints about planting evidence but they always took his word for it til 1 time the idiot forgot to turn off his body cam & recorded himself planting evidence so the did a Sting on him & he did again.

(Yes, very similar to The Shawshank Redemption) They actually made a clean getaway. But instead of continuing to move on, they actually stopped to eat at an IHOP!! (don’t know where they got money from) Of course they were recognized immediately, and the police were called and they were recaptured! They probably would have been captured anyway, but to stop in an IHOP?? I’m not making this up. This story made NATIONAL headlines.

Entrapment is tricky, but in a lot of places entrapment does not occur if a police officer simply gives you the chance to commit a crime, as generally you are expected to refuse to commit a crime in most cases...but if you are induced, forced, etc to commit a crime that is entrapment. So it would depend how closely they follow those laws in the jurisdiction.

Entrapment doesn't exist in my opinion. Each person knows that what is legal and illegally. If the cops put out a baitcar and you take it, you are a criminal. The point is if it is not yours, do not touch it or take it. I want everyone thrown in prison for being that dumb. Those who do not know the difference between right and wrong do not deserve pity. Lock them up and throw away the key.

Law enforcement sets these stings up in areas that are seeing excess amounts of crime. The bait cars are for areas that see a ridiculous amount of auto theft. Victims in those areas sometimes can have multiple thefts in a month. Baits don't solve crime but bring it down to manageable amount so people can have some relief. Same with drugs. In areas getting dangerous the law will put zero tolerance on drug trafficking. Same with prostitution where they pressure them (and set them up) in certain areas so they move on to an area not so hostile to there business.
This may not always cure the problem but can let lawful citizens have some peace. The setups or 'entrapment' as you call it would not be a problem if you are not someone who breaks the law. Think about it, if you saw a car running with keys in it, would YOU take it? Let alone break into one... I wouldn't, so I don't have sympathy for someone who thinks they don't need to work for it when they can just steal mine. Law enforcement are there to 'Protect and Serve' and I'm sure that applies to those that follow the law not break it.

Absolutely for police setting up traps for criminals. The chances they wouldnt have done it otherwise are very low. If a car is left unlocked then that could have easily been left unlocked by a person, rather than the police or it could easily be a regular person asking them for drugs. I think the criminals are likely to do it regardless of whether or not it was set up by the police, this just allows them to catch them in a way that they can gather enough evidence to actually do something about it.

Gambling is illegal in MOST states. That’s why the states that do have legal gambling are such great tourist attractions. Uncle Sam wants his $ so if you’re gambling in Vegas, Atlantic City, Indian reservations, Nevada lol and a dozen or so other places. If not done in a legit place it’s 100% illegal all the time. The lines are blurred though. We used to do a ball board for football and basketball games or World Series. It’s a blurry line but if you’re throwing dice with a bunch of $ on the street of a big city they’ll arrest them most likely because they know most of those people are doing other crimes and haven’t caught them

Gambling is defined by the exchange of money in a bet. New York only allows gambling outside NYC but not within the city. Its because organized crime tends to use Gambling as a front to money laundering. Unfortunately horse gambling is only allowed online for now but its technically illegal. Florida only allows gambling on certain tribal lands held by the Seminole tribe. Everywhere else its not illegal but very frowned upon.

Because I know people play cards and gamble or play dice and poker and gamble, and cops don't come barreling in the door and start arresting people. Maybe those guys were known to gamble for drugs or drug money or something like that? I do know in Texas we can't have casinos, but in Oklahoma they can, so as soon as you cross from tx into Oklahoma there is a huge casino. I've never been there but I've driven past it a bunch of times. And here in TX at really sketchy gas stations you will see gambling machines that I've been told are illegal, but like why don't the cops come take the machines? But we can buy lottery tickets and that's fine...even though that's gambling. 🤷‍♀️

My local agency had decent success with the program, and they had a documentary film crew with them once. They did absolutely everything to try and get one stolen to film it, with no luck. Finally their last attempt was to stage a situation (late night so roads and parking lot were mostly y empty so minimal risk to any bystanders.) They went to the ghetto, the driver of the bait car raced into a restaurant parking lot wèeeèchased another guy on foot, leaving the car running and door open. Gambling is legal as long as some company (or the state) is profiting from it for people 18 and up, or in the privacy of your own home. Like drinking, weed, and tobacco, it’s legal but with rules.

I think if the cops do that then they should just detain them and make them think they going to jail to scare them but not arrest them. Just a scare tactic. I think that would be good idea. I got DUI, I never made mistake before then and now I for sure learned My lesson. It was dumbest thing I could ever do and I paid for it for a over a year

Gambling for money in public is highly illegal everywhere. Dice games are illegal as well. If you want to throw dice or play poker do it at home. Legal gambling is allowed in Las Vegas, Atlantic City, New Jersey and on some Indian Reservations only

Honestly the people getting busted for buying one bag or maybe 2 from an undercover officer who most likely approached them or pretended to be a dealer who sold to them before is totally bullshit. These people are not dangerous criminals they are people who are sick and need help. I'm an addict in recovery and I know from personal experience that people want to quit and don't want to use anymore but the fear of withdrawal keeps them in. They have jobs, children, responsibilities and know that going through withdrawal for days or even weeks is just not something they can do. You literally feel like you are dying. It's like having the flu but 10x worse. So arresting someone who is already struggling and totally fucking up their lives by putting them in jail is disgusting.

Ex-husband, son and daughter-in-law all served 20+ years in law enforcement. Entrapment it reprehensible and officers that descend to that level of "justice" are no better than some criminals. Unfortunately the quality of many individuals joining law enforcement today leaves much to be desired and the reason why son and daughter-in-law retired as soon as it was possible for them to do so.

Personally, I think there are plenty of people committing crimes for cops to worry about entrapment on those who might commit a crime. Entrapment jobs are pure laziness by law enforcement and usually involve some sort of profiling.
I do differentiate between entrapment and undercover work btw. Infiltration of a criminal organization and the like, but walking up to a guy on the corner and asking to buy some coke? That's bs.

I see entrapment as a legitimate tactic. These criminals were set out to perform the activities they perform, and if law enforcement didn’t give them a target, they’d take one elsewhere.
Also, unstable, unsafe environments growing up, and lacking one or the other parent-or god forbid, both-has a major influence on the way a person behaves throughout their life. People in these poor, rundown city homing projects turn to crime and drugs to deal with the stresses of life, like how the next water bill is going to be paid or not being able to be home with your child enough because a single parent needs to work multiple jobs just to make sure their child doesn’t starve, at the cost of emotional and directional development of said child…

Just because a police put a bait car out there doesn't mean people should steal it. You can't blame the police. How you figure them same people wouldn't steal a car if it was somebody else car? They are criminals so obviously they would have stole an innocent person car. If a cop put a gun in your hand does that mean its their fault if you decided to pull the trigger?

  • @cindymatthewsarrowdalearts6449

The entrapment thing - I don't understand the distinction between a sting and entrapment. But I really don't understand why entrapment is illegal. If I set you up to give you an opportunity to cheat me, or not!! - and you do, that's on you. You had the choice. I didn't force you. There were two ways to choose. So what is entrapment?
The other thing about videos like this is the immaturity that shows through - they all turn into to 4 year olds swearing they didn't touch the chocolate cake while their hands and faces are covered in chocolate. And yes, positive roles models are essential, and no matter how racist or sexist or whatever this makes me sound, single parent homes are a huge part of these problems, especially ones without a strong male leader. If a girl grows up in a household that is predominately male, with no mother, she's not likely to be terribly feminine, or even know how to react and relate in a"girl"environment. And the opposite is true about male children, in an environment dominated by women. And, almost every city is trying hard to fill in those gaps, but it seems to me they try to late, trying to relate to teens. It should start when they start school, or even younger. A boy needs to see men being aware of others needs and doing what he can to meet those needs, needs as simple is giving up his seat in a crowded room for someone older or pregnant or with a bad leg, etc. That is learned best by modeling. Years ago when our son was only about 7 years old, on an Easter morning that was filling up all the pews fast, it was my son - my 7 year old - who jumped up and went to the fellowship hall to grab chairs for those who arrived too late to get a seat in a pew. Several men jumped up when they saw him coming through the door from FH carrying a folding chair almost as tall as he was, but my son had seen his dad respond that way dozens of times and knew the proper response. And that he saw it before any of the grownups made me the proudest mama ever! :) You can "talk" about stuff like that until you're blue in the face, but when a child witnesses that behavior over and over, it becomes an automatic response.
Another example from my kid, one that's as funny as it is powerful. He had a small table with four chairs around it and when he was quite small - 3 or so - it was the perfect place to put one of the several garages he had on it and play with Matchbox and Hotwheels cars. One day the neighbor kid was over and the two of them were sitting at the table playing. My sister dropped in to drop something off, or pick something up - I have no clue - and Jason jumped up from his chair, swept his arm toward his little friend and said, "Aunt Tlara [his version of "Clara"] meet my friend, David!" I can't picture my husband sweeping his arm that way, but certainly coming to his feet when someone came in the house was normal. My sister adopted 4 at risk teens who are near his age and I can tell you, none of them had a clue about basic courtesy. My sister would shake her head and try not to scream in frustration when one of us would stop by (usually to drop off a few groceries or even some clothing we'd picked up to help out) and the four of them would be sprawled out on all the furniture in the livingroom, never moving an inch to accommodate any newcomers, even after my sister would ask them to move or make room. From their perspective, they were all enjoying MTV and here was this pain in the neck "fake" aunt expecting them to turn off the TV and VISIT!?? It took years, and none of them are instinctive about it, but they are a lot better after 30 years in the family. And I'm no longer a fake aunt. Still a pain, I'm sure... ;-)

Once they read you your rights. You have a right to a lawyer. But you have to ask for it. If you don’t ask for a lawyer. They tell you when they read you your rights. Anything you say can and will he used against you in a court of law. But some people are too stupid to shut up. The minute you say you want a lawyer they can’t ask you anymore questions without a lawyer present

On the entrapment thing, they would have just found another dealer or target. The only difference is that they found a cop instead of a dealer. Oh well, better being clean and in jail rather than OD'ing on the types of street garbage sold today like Fentynol.

Police in America have no obligation to tell the truth and they are allowed to lie, or at least be less than honest, to a suspect in interrogation. I wish we were more like the UK in that respect.
The best thing to do in that situation is to state clearly that the suspect has no obligation to answer any questions and then request an attorney. After that, clam up and don’t say another.
