Thanks for the video. I noticed that the 6 speed manual jtdm is easier to drain and also have a dipstick to check gearbox oil level. Haven't seen it before on a manual gearbox.

Yes, it is the same on some of the previous gearboxes found in Alfas

Good guide. I always change the box oil when the timing belt is replaced as it's quite easy to do

I would recommend putting some blue Loctite or thread sealing paste (not tape) on the threads of the fill and drain plugs.
I did this job on my GT JTS a year or two ago and had slight leaks before I put sealer on the plugs.

    • @arcgarage

You might have a damaged plug, it is usually not necessary if tightened properly...

Hey ARC, i’m experiencing a problem on my gearbox. When it rains, my gearbox is really hard to shift. When my engine starts warming up, it kinda dissapears. When it doesn’t rain, i am not experiencing it. Can you please help me?

Are the screws in the same place no matter if it is the gasoline version (1.6 twin spark) or the diesel version (1.9jtd) in the 147 car model?

My 156 stopped going into 4th gear. There was no slipping or grinding before this happened. It just stopped going into 4th gear. All other gears are smooth with no issues. The gearlever will not even budge towards 4th gear. Any tips on what to look at? Most workshops I spoke to said that 4th gear broke and the gearbox will need to be stripped. Doubt that is the issue. This is a 2005 156 Sportwagon 2.0 TS. Thanks in advance for any feedback.

It requires closer inspection, however, don't do anything before you check out the linkages, and make sure that the plastics beneath the lever are solid...

@@arcgarage thanks for the feedback. I am planning to get to the linkage that fits into the top of the gearbox over this weekend. I was advised to pull out the ball joint part that fits into the top of the gearbox and check if I can select 4th gear. If I still cant get 4th gear then it will means there is something wrong somewhere along the linkage and cables or the plastic bits under the gear lever. Now I just need to figure out how to best get to the point to where I can inspect the plastic bits.
Finally got my first Alfa as a Christmas gift from my Wife last December so still finding my way around this beauty. Thanks again for your attentiveness to my questions. You are a star! Cheers, Preyan

Just to confirm, you can refill the oil from the reservoir in the engine too right?
Also, is it possible to vacuum out the old oil via the reservoir outflow using a large pump?

    • @arcgarage

No you can't pump it out, and you have to add oil through the same spot I did in the video, but you can do it from above

    • @arcgarage

Did you take it apart to replace the cylinder? Issue could be the main seal, driveshaft seals, etc.
