- Paul McCartney: The Beatles' Other Drummer
Paul can certainly drum and demonstrated that on at least 4 songs with The Beatles including Back in the U.S.S.R, Martha My Dear and The Ballad of John and Yoko. He also manned the drums on his own album Band on The Run as well as surprisingly contributing to the Foo Fighters Sunday Rain.
“What instrument do you play?”
Paul McCartney: *yes*
My favorite comment atm
"What instrument do you play?"
Paul McCartney:" You know"
Paul is an incredible song writer, a genius really..... True musicianship! Drums are easy.....
@@hannahliiaa6698 I actually am pro drummer turned guitarist, Paul's music is very hard but Lennon's way easier. I went with Lennon's music.
Try to come up with an original comment if your own, rather than the same repeated nonsense that you find on every UA-cam video 😉
Paul played bass guitar and drummed on 'Ballad of John and. Yoko'. John sang and played guitar. Just the two of them. At one point, John turned to Paul and said, 'Go a bit faster, Ringo!' And Paul replied, 'Okay, George!'
...what?
@@sananton2821 whats not to understand
Are you aware of the actual meaning of the phrase "no love lost between those two"??
@@JFFM730 OP didn't understand what he was saying.
No hes shit on them😅😅😅
When ringo wasn’t able to be there to record a song or didn’t want to record the song Paul was his designated substitute and on the Beatles songs dear prudence and back in the u.s.s.r Paul played the drums
It’s believed that Ringo overdubbed the intricate drumming at the end of Dear Prudence ...
I think he also played drums on Martha my dear
Pauls ok but he’s no Ringo
There were times even John had a crack at it because he had a beat in his head that nobody could understand untill he played it George Martin said that in a interview
The Ballad of John and Yoko is also played by Macca
Paul McCartney is actually good at everything able to make notes
So True !!!
Technically that doesnt include drums haha
Jack Thomson not necessarily true. Anything with a sound can have a note.
@@jackthomson5047 You can tune them so yes they can
@@jackthomson5047 dude, have you touched a drum?
UPDATED: Wow McCartney has numbers 1 singing, making chorus, playing piano, bass, acoustic and electric guitars, ukulele and drums.
And a trumpet
And ukulele
And life itself
Paul McCartney was his band itself
I read somewhere that he can play over 40 instruments.
If I remember right, Paul played all of the instruments on his first solo album
You do remember correctly
He also played all of the instruments on his 3rd all solo record as well as his most recent release from a couple of weeks ago.
Paul played all the instruments on all three of the solo albums simply called "McCartney": "McCartney" (1970), "McCartney II" (1980) and "McCartney III" (2020). The first person to do that on records was jazz musician Sidney Bechet, who played clarinet, soprano sax, tenor sax, piano, bass and drums on "The Sheik of Araby" on a 1941 record released as "Sidney Bechet's One-Man Band."
Impressive.
His drumming on Band on the Run is superb. John Bonham pointed out that he was impressed when he heard the drumming skills on said album.
its ok, but superb? no
LMFAO....McCartney's drumming sucks
It was ok.
Yes, indeed. He did a fine job on that album. He added the right touches to what the songs needed. He is no Ringo but he can play competently. People also forget, like Ringo, Paul is left-handed playing on a right-handed kit.
I guess you mean Keith Moon being impressed!
Left handed drummer playing right handed?? Seems like I've seen that before.
Wonder which one tried it that way first
@@bmarantz6062 ringo
that is because that ain't Paul McCartney
@Dean Morrow that whole paul is dead thing is so played after 50+ years
Another missed opportunity to play with an open handed.
Paul is seriously good on everything he played. He’s such a gifted musician.
As a drummer myself, I'd say he is adequate.
@@ultrakool well yeah I mean he’s no bonham or grohl but surprisingly he’s a lot better than most predominantly bass players. He’s killer on bass on guitar and keys and he can funk it up on stix. Not bad at all Macca
he goes out of time on dear prudence and ringo had to cover him up,. so he wasnt always as gifted as he himself thought
@@c.wdervin5987 grohl is the single most overrated drummer of the past thirty years, imo. other than his metronome-like timing and power, he only plays single stroke stuff and is therefore adequate, also. it's good to be in a band with an exceptional song writer, like he was, to gain notoriety. ~jmho~
@@ultrakool listen to his Fills he is a beast Rock drummer.
Drums and bass go hand in hand.
Ive been playing drums for many years.
Picked up a bass and advanced quickly.
I still can't play a guitar worth a damn, but I play bass good enough to hold bottom, and figure out songs pretty fast. Love both instruments.
They're the backbone to any band.
Paul also played drums on "My Dark Hour" by the Steve Miller Band. Did a pretty passable job as well.
I actually think he was more than passable on that song. It was like a duet between Miller's guitar and Paul's drums. Both were shredding.
lol a bit better than 'passable' - great song
That was Billy, the fake Paul. Steve Miller even called him the different Paul....lol
I think would have been much better with ringo or Bernard purdie. Mccartney sounds predictable, timing is off, and doesn't swing. On drums he was barely passable. Not to take away that he has to be the most skilled multiinstumentalist ever.
@@cliffnote7058 The one and only. LOL
Paul McCartney is SUPER in everything he ever did and still does.
Sir Paul!!! The most gifted musician in the history of music....
Stevie Wonder and Prince are up there too.
@@abc456f Well, if you can do what Paul does while being blind then that makes you a step above Paul, I would argue.
@Billy Boffin McCartney's songwriting makes all the difference
George Harrison can ply 37 instruments! I can’t even name 37 instruments. George plays many many instruments at the highest levels.
@@taowaycamino4891 I seem to remember that Stevie played all the instruments on one of his albums, including drums, and his drumming wasn't much better than Paul's.
He's Paul Mccartney so he's good at everything. Could have played centre half for Liverpool if he wanted to. Good old Macca.
Paul is a solid rock drummer, nothing flashy but better than many people claim.
He obviously wasn't as good as Ringo was but he was still great!
he was okay
Lead or rhythm guitar, bass, drums, piano, kazoo-you name it, he played it brilliantly on Beatles albums and singles. Dave Grohl and many other musicians confirm that McCartney is a great drummer. McCartney played drums on 4 Beatles iconic songs, including number ones (Dear Prudence, Back in the USSR, Martha My Dear, The Ballad of John and Yoko). He also played drums on his whole albums Band on the Run and McCartney II, and on songs by the Foo Fighters and the Steve Miller Band.
@@HEADLINEZOO Yeah, that's right, but George was the best instrumentalist in the band. He could play 26 instruments.
@@g4briel444 Paul could play over 40 according to this video.
João G. Not remotely true
Everything Paul touches turns to Gold...…As a drummer for 55 years I enjoyed the review. Rock on, Paul!
They were all great . Best band ever .
Paul was a good drummer. I love his drumming on The Ballad Of John & Yoko.
Paul is a musical jack-of-all-trades.
Listen to Band On The Run-the whole album, then pull your head out of your rectums so you can hear better. Listen to the drummers for Nirvana and Foo Fighters who say McCartney is a brilliant drummer and the rare drummer who can compose memorable drum parts (as he did for The Beatles many times). Ringo had/has superb otherworldly feel and groove, and he’s a great song man and singer’s drummer-fantastic crooner. No need to ignore McCartney’s obvious talents behind the skins.
Sir Paul has a wonderful left-handed poised touch on the snare drum, letting the drum stick do the work, stick to its working of the sound.
He's always between heavy and light, between thunder and rain, as if the stick had its own breathing.
He's an outstanding hearer, listener.
Its mother nature's born musician, emitting and tranmitting, with his so tactful feel, the rightest of beat.
Even the other left-handed of the Four couldn't compete.
McCartney is a virtuoso musician... As simple as that!!
You know Sir Paul can hit that pocket! An inspiration.
I've read that Paul came up with some grooves for Ringo to play. The one that stands out is Ticket to Ride.
Well he certainly isn’t a bad drummer...
Paul McCartney knew basic drumming. But he dont have the feel that Ringo have
Not even close
Ringo is the King of Feel.
Given enough time and practice he could have.
I agree there. Ringo is a better drummer than Paul. But Paul is still a damn good drummer!
Paul’s drumming was Basic, no doubt.
This guy is good at everything no one says anything about his love for his hair!
He is a great drummer. Apparently Keith Moon loved Paul's drumming on Band on the Run.
Paul McCartney can play triangle and make it sound good...lol
McCartney was a serviceable drummer was able to accompany himself on piano and play guitar well. But he was a great bass player and an even greater songwriter. But its really Ringo that other drummers have been influenced by.
Vincent M Imbecilic take. Listen to Band On The Run-the whole album, then pull your head out of your rectum so you can hear better. You’re spewing pure idiocy. Listen to the drummers for Nirvana and Foo Fighters who say McCartney is a brilliant drummer and the rare drummer who can compose memorable drum parts (as he did for The Beatles many times). Ringo had superb otherworldly feel and groove.
@@HEADLINEZOO Was it really necessary to use personal insults and profanity when replying to an honest opinion?
@@coleparker Thank God for your comment. I was about to say the same thing. Like what is wrong with this people?
Paul played drums on Dear Prudence, but also did John and George. Ringo came back as they were finishing the song and quickly overdubbed a short bit at the end. He also contributed with hand clapping and back vocals.
No Ringo didn't. There's no proof he did.
@@ewest14 There are several sources attesting to that. And Paul never claimed to be the only one on drums or ever denied Ringo overdubbed 2 or 3 bars of the song. Maybe someone should ask Ringo and Paul about it directly, but since no one does, we need to rely on indirect sources. FYI, Paul didn't play bass on Old Brown Shoe either, it was George, but this time the source is George himself. 😉
@@jods1 Where's the many sources saying that Ringo overdubbed?
@@ewest14 I should start being paid for this. Here it goes:
William J. Dowlding's Beatlesongs (1995) says Ringo played drums albeit not on the entire track.
J. P. Russell's The Beatles On Record (1982) also says Ringo played on Dear Prudence.
About Ringo's absence, The Compleat Beatles (1981) says it lasted one week, starting on August 22. Since the Dear Prudence recordings took place on August 28 (at Trident Studios), and again on the 29 and 30, that adds to the idea that Ringo, whilst not playing on the whole track, did in fact overdub the trickier part for consistency and cohesion upon his return.
Some sources say Ringo also contributed with backing vocals, and that Mal Evans, Jackie Lomax and a certain John (some say McCartney's cousin, whilst others that he was his nephew) are also on the track.
@@jods1 There's still no definitive proof though
The more I read about this guy the more I convince myself that nobody will ever match his accomplishments in the music world. It's just plainly impossible.
Sure there will. They just won't be you or me.
@@mr.nazareth4501 if paul McCartney thought 🤔 like you we wouldn't know Paul McCartney!
Paul is a functional drummer. No shuffle rhythms though
Exactly. Ringo was the king of shuffle (Get Back).
More than functional
@@krollpeter No not really... a regular drumbeat is ok no fancy fills. Just enough to keep the song going. Any Wings or current drummer out plays him. And I'm not dissing him! I am a huge fan! I like him most or bass and piano. And those incredible vocals and ear for melody.. Its enough dont you think?
@@jaapjandeback5809 You forgot his vast catalogue as a composer!
His incredible vocals and playing bass superbly would be class-act already. But on top of that he wrote more than 1000 songs. All the instruments he plays, including piano and drums, that is then the glitter sprinkled over an truly outstanding musical talent.
Many people say John Lennon was better lyrically. But Mr. McCartney's better lyrics are on par with Lennons, IMO. To my personal opinion he was "most" of the Beatles from about '67. And within his extensive work after '70 it is not hard to find songs as good as what he did with the Beatles.
@@jaapjandeback5809 Well Said!!
His drumming at the end of Dear Prudence was perfect.
that part was added by Ringo. There are entire videos about that last passage of the song. You can hear clearly the unmistakable style of Starr.
That was Ringo.
The Leonardo da vinci of modern music.
Modern?
He also drummed on My Dark Hour by Steve Miller. That’s some killer drumming.
I loved Pauls drumming and bass playing on the Steve Miller song My Dark Hour.
And a Foo Fighters song.

Best musician ever. Period.
I liked his drumming in Dear Prudence
The outro of that song is unreal. Superb drumming.
Sir Paul McCartney ROCKS period
Paul is a musical genius and a multitalented musician
He is simply a musical and creative genius
Pretty solid, especially considering he's left handed and playing a right handed kit.
As is Ringo.
He played what was needed
And that is good enough.
Such a multi talented musician what a man!!
Listen to Steve Miller's 1969 song "My Dark Hour." Paul's drumming is PHENOMENAL.
He's really good in that I must say
Yes. Paul plays drum in all songs of album Tug of World in 1980s
He can play literally every instrument
He drums on the Foo Fighters new album.
Paul is a number 1!!!!!!!!!!!!
Paul is a VErY Talented Musician
When Band on the Run came out I thought it was the greatest music ever on vinyl. When I looked at the album sleeve, I thought all the actors with Wings were members of his band and I thought one of them was the drummer. It took about two years later to realize Paul did all the drumming. He's not as good as Carl Palmer or Nick Mason but he can hold a beat.
@Michael H. Yes Michael that's correct. In an interview, Paul did mention about his 2 key players walking out on him after feeling impatient that Paul.is still not creating a true worldwide hit they were expecting.
So, Paul & Linda & what was left of the band went on to record arguably his best post-Beatles album.
Paul rightfully gave them the finger.
Serves those non-believers & disloyals just right where they belong.
He can be given any instrument, and be fine at it.
Lefty's on righty Drum Kits...Karen Carpenter, Clem Burke, Stewart Copeland, Travis Barker, Bun E. Carlos , Billy Cobham, Simon Phillips, Fred E. White, Buddy Miles, Ringo, Ian Paice, Slim Jim Phantom, Michael Urbano, Joey Waronker, Ginger Fish, Shawn Drover, Micky Dolenz, Al Sobrante, Charles Connor, Mike Bordin, Dave Lombardo, Chris Adler and more...
Not so good like Ringo and Watts. But we know Paul can play anything, bloody genius from another world

I'd certainly be happy for Paul to play drums in my band! ;) Having said that, I'd be very happy for Paul to play anything he damn well wants in my band!!! ;)
Not only could he drum - his playing on Dear Prudence was absolutely brilliant. He played exactly like Ringo would have played the song. It just shows his brilliance as a musician.
Ringo dubbed the solo portion of Dear Prudence.
Paul can damn near play any instrument he picks up
except bag pipes - so I heard
Paul McCartney is good at any instrument he touches.
I am the biggest fan of Paul McCartney...really, for me, he is the greatest composer of all time, nothing less... A great baseman, can play piano, he is a good guitarist...As a drummer, he can do simple drum beats but not more than that...Ringo is the most underrated drummer of all time... not in terms of drum technics... but what a good composer of drum beats...I am a drummer...I studied in a music conservatory and I had a band many years...and I was a drum teacher many years... So, I know what I am thinking about...
As a drummer he makes a great bassist.
One of the best out there
He's an excellent all around musician. No question
Poxa!
The real question is what is he bad at?
Yes he is excellent at everything
Although the whole band Wings is credited with playing on the "Red Rose Speedway" album, I heard that Paul is playing drums on "My Love".
That is Denny Seiwell.
Back In The USSR,Dear Prudence,Ballad of John & Yoko.
Así es en esos temas toco la bateria, cuando Ringo dejó el grupo, unos dias
That weird fill in the first clip is brilliant
From the first clip, I can confidently say ‘yes’.
i mean...he's by no means a virtuoso on the instrument, but his pocket and timing are impeccable and well suited to the idioms of music that he tends to play.
Just talent
Paul played drums in the Foo Fighters song "Sunday Rain" Maybe he isn't the best drummer out there, but he does do a good job when he picks the sticks. Plus that song is only from 2017, so it has merit
Ton of talent
「ジョンとヨーコのバラード」でのポールのドラムプレイを、誰かがメチャクチャ褒めていた記憶がある。
John could also play a little drums as well. There is footage on the let it be sessions. I don't know about George though. Paul was a brilliant musician, he was definetly the best in the Beatles.
Hong Kong Phooey John hardly plays drums on the film Let It Be. Just one small clip of Octopus’s Garden and he messes that up by going out of time. He can hardly be called a drummer and neither can George.
He managed to do all the instruments in his song “‘Coming Up’
Not only that song but on the whole album on which Coming Up is on.
He's also played all the instruments on his most recent release from a few weeks ago.
His drumming on Mc3 is quite good!
He’s good at everything. He’s made one or two albums where he was the only artist. My favorite is McCartney 2
I remember seeing Lennon in an interview at the height of Beatlemania mid 60's I think. A reporter shoved a microphone in Lennon's face, and said. Is Ringo the best drummer in the world? Lennon said, Ringo's not even the best drummer in the Beatles.
No you didn't see this because it's well proven that it never happened.
It’s a joke made by comedian Jasper Carrot. Lennon has never said that in an interview. So if you remember having seen it, it must have been in your dreams :-)
Ringo played on John's plastic ono band album and said in a interview that ringo was one of the best drummers in the world the drumming on the album is great
Nonsense.

Paul played drums on the studio version of "Ballad of John and Yoko" on the Hey Jude/Beatles Again album. Ringo and George didn't play on that track.
Back in the day, someone asked John Lennon if Ringo was the best drummer in the world. Reportedly, John responded "he isn't even the best drummer in the band". There were always rumors that if Paul didn't like how Ringo laid down a recorded track, he'd go back into the studio that evening and overdub it. At least that was the word.
Lennon never said that. It was a Jasper Carrott joke from 1983 apparently
Total myth. Lennon never said that and McCartney didn’t overdub the Ringo drum tracks.
The man is music!
Paul and Ringo are left handed and played a right hand kit, so it's clear, that nobody noticed, when Ringo didn't play on a song.
No actually Paul plays on Back in the USSR, and if you listen close to the drums, they are not played that great? Ringo was a much better drummer than Paul, the Band on the Run album,is the same sound as Back in the USSR, drums are not the strong point of that record! They blend in o k but it’s not like someone great is drumming, Paul’s drumming is someone who knows how to play, but doesn’t do it nearly often enough to be a virtuoso, like Ringo was, you need to play all the time to be really good!
Well considering he drums RIGHT handed, he's bloody amazing!!😮
Didn’t realise he played drums right-handed, there you go !
John Lennon was asked if Ringo was the best drummer in the world and John replied he's not even the best drummer in the Beatles.
