Does insurance cover this surgery or is it considered a cosmetic only surgery?

Many insurance companies have medical policies that can possibly cover lipedema surgery; however, the individual policies are complex, and the process for submitting for insurance authorization can be lengthy. Even when the insurance company covers part of the cost the patient will usually still have to pay a signicant amount. Lipedema can be significantly reduced with a specialized type of liposuction; Lipedema Reduction Surgery has been shown to lead to many improvements including decreased pain and swelling. Lipedema Reduction Surgery (LRS) improves mobility, knee flexion, and knee joint alignment. LRS has been shown to improve gait and functional capacities like improvements in the ability to climb stairs and walk and run short distances. On average, LRS improves the quality of life and overall health of the women who had the surgery.
