Easter Eggs You Missed in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Episode 1

- "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" is boldly going backwards, to the time of the original series, which was famously pitched as being "'Wagon Train' to the stars."
The series, set roughly between the events of "Star Trek: Discovery" and the original series, is coming out of the gate with a ton of references to "Trek" series past, with a heavy emphasis on "Enterprise," TOS, and "Discovery." There's starships named after characters you know, star charts full of places you know, and most unexpectedly, the long, long, long-awaited return of the Gorn.
These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise… and these are all of the Easter eggs you missed in "Star Trek: Strange New Worlds" episode 1.

Were there any other Easter eggs you noticed?
The Hermes Class scout, Admiral April, the reference to the movie Silent Running with the forests in orbit, need we go on?
Yes... that a civil war, the eugenics war, and WWWIII were started by People holding signs that read "Audit the Vote"... and that the USA is the only country that matters to the Federation?... what woke crap..
I noticed that sick-bay had squirt bottles just like in the original series. Chapel is sorting them out in a drawer at the end of the episode.
Dude...the Gorn bit isn't an easter egg... The easter egg is La'an's story which coupled with her surname, Noonien Singh, and her general demeanor paint the following picture:
1.the colony ship she speaks of could be Botany Bay or related to it
2. the possible plot point of introducing Khan
3. Augments making an appearance very early in the series
@@kalad000 I've seen elsewhere that the PADD Pike has with him on board Shuttle Stamets (displaying La'an Noonien Singh's service file) notes the colony ship she was on was the S.S. Puget Sound. So it's a solid possibility that there's going to be a retcon about the number of ships launched from Earth containing Khan and his followers...or La'an will be made a descendant of the Augments shown in "Star Trek: Enterprise".
Admiral "Bob", as you call him, is Robert April, the first Captain of the NCC-1701.
I was going to say the same!
Robert April is Gene Roddenberry, not some random guy.
@@DarthVader-1701 In early Star Trek novelsRobert April was the captain prior to Pike and it is canon- whether or not it was an alias/pseudonym/ pen name or simply modeled after Roddenberry idk, but the reference was to the character not the creator… though I suppose it could be both
@@DarthVader-1701 - what gives you that idea?
Robert April should have been Easter Egg number one.
The first episode of Strange New Worlds is the first time in Star Trek history that we've seen people being transported from multiple angles in a single camera shot. The dolly pan around the transporter pad when the away team left was awesome cinematography.
That was really cool.
good job Grips!
I'm pretty sure we've seen people being transported from dolly / handheld shots in the Abrams movies.
Oh shut up
My friend met John Winston many years ago. He went to get a haircut in North Hollywood and asked the barber to trim his sideburns with a point. The barber acknowledged that it was a style from Star Trek. My friend asked the barber how he knew. The barber said he was Transporter Chief Kyle on the show!
One possible non-trek easter egg is the samples of wilderness sent in space greenhouses. Could be a reference to the Sci-Fi classic "Silent Running."
I thought the same exact thing. The domes sure look like the ones the Valley Forge was carrying.
Classic film. I had the same reaction. The writers are dropping nods in such seamless ways. Obviously fan themselves.
Yes!
one of the best movies and the music was wonderful....You tube needs to introduce a generation to it....
Thank you, Looper, for making more Star Trek videos! 🖖🖖🖖
ACTUALLY, the name of the ship could just as easily be a reference to Archer's DAD, who developed the warp five engine.
Singh on the enterprise suggests raising shields per regulations - and Spock starts to speak against it. but Pike raises the shield immediately and saves the ship from damage.
In wrath of Khan, Lt Savak says the same thing when meeting reliant (with Khan in command), but this time Spock puts her in her place and Kirk ignores the suggestion and the ship gets heavily damaged.
BOTH Captains tell them to 'You Keep on reminding me of the regulations'
Any one else notice this?
I've just watched SNW ep1. As someone who is very disappointed with Picard and Discovery, I find SNW really good, very well-done. It's the best of all star trek, even better than 2009 movie. However, that is just the first episode. They have to keep this up.
I agree with everything you said.
Very good casting.
Pity you’re disappointed in any Star Trek series. Let’s revel in the fact we have new stories. Each to their own but aren’t we in the Star Trek family?
@@AnneMB955 Oh sorry, but you don't understand why many old fans despise Picard and STD and the JJ Movies: Because they destroyed much of Canon and also of what Star Trek was for decades. With SNW it seems CBS finally can find back to the roots of Star Trek, which isn't some secret service conspiracy plot or a dystopia, but a ship and a crew searching for strange new worlds and species to educate themselves on the universe and often in retrospective on their own behaviours and believes.
@@acmenipponair As far as I'm concerned, the only Picard I know is from TNG.
No one missed the gorn references. It was a clear plot point.
What? I watched the episode 15 times and didn’t notice it until I watched this video!
Clear, but not accurated to Star Trek tos. In the episode Arena of tos, the Gorns are refered to as an unknown species.
@@marcclement6597 exactly my point. In TOS, which temporally is after this series, is clearly stated that Gorn was never met before, in fact everyone is surprised by their physical aspect. That's clearly an error.
You Missed that Admiral is named Robert April the original captain of the Enterprise as noted the animated series
That's the most important thing in this entire episode!
The elevator music is actual the DIscovery theme. Which is both an easter egg and if someone noticed it on the way down before the reveal of DIscovery's involvement in this planets expansion, a kinda foreshadow of it.
Just the opening music, with words that I was able to say along with them, had me. Loved it!
The USS Archer is nearly identical to the Saladin Class from the Star Trek Technical Manual by Franz Joseph, printed in the 1970s, and well-known by longtime fans. Ships from this book were name-dropped in The Motion Picture (1979) during the opening Epsilon IX sequence.
The only major difference is the holes cut out of the neck on the Archer. ST fans have been waiting years for one of these ships to finally make an appearance!
I always enjoy your videos on the TOPIC of Star Trek Keep them coming Great reviews
I thought an "Easter egg" was something subtle or hidden. Each one of these stated examples outright or pointedly obvious.
By my definition and more common definition/expectation, an example of an Easter egg would be more along the line that they incorporated the original pilot transporter sound effect when they beamed somewhere.
Edit: typos and clarity
It seems as it it’s meaning is slowly changing over time
So... it seems to me that the references to the space station at the end of the episode directly link the show to the 70s movie Silent Running starring Bruce Dern.
The Gorn capturing people for food and to lay eggs is likely a reference to the "Magog" in "Andromeda" (another Gene Roddenberry creation). And the forest biospheres would be a reference to the movie "Silent Running".
I didn't know Andromeda was also from Roddenberry. Probably the cause I liked it, too.
The brother of James T. Kirk is George S. Kirk. As established in the original series, Jim Kirk is the only one who addresses his sibling by the brother's middle name.
maybe for reasons we will learn, eh?
Correct...referenced in "What are Little Girls Made of ?" George Samuel Kirk. They missed that in the 2009 movie, kid Kirk called him Georgie, not Sammy, as he should have, while stealing his [real, biological] father's antique 1964 Corvette Rag-Top, with the Nokia [where are they now?] communications built-in.
@@LoneBrowncoat Well the 2009 movie gets a pass because it is set in the Kelvin Timeline (I forgive a lot in that movie because they were honest and had the characters acknowledge that they are parallel counterparts to the actual people).
Since Not Trek: Duhscovery and Not Trek: Pretendcard are also divergent from the Real Stat Trek Timeline I suppose that could explain the name being wrong BUT Kurtzman & company refuse to acknowledge the '25% different' rule and that STD and. STP are either also part of the Kelvin Timeline or they are in yet another parallel timeline,...because they clearly are not TOS/TAS/TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT Timeline.
Technically, the shuttle could be named after the real-world mycologist Paul Stamets, who the character in Discovery was named after.
^This
You mean STD is now naming crew members after their veneral yeast infections?
@@Olebull93 - what nonsense are you babbling about?
@@Olebull93 Rule of thumb: anyone who calls Discovery "STD" is a person whose opinion is worth less than nothing.
@@N0-1_H3r3 😏 it's STD and you are welcome to use ointments to soothe that butthurt.
I like how the uniforms are simple in design and functionality. Something sorely missing in other ST series.
New uniforms weren't bad until they decided to change them every ten minutes.
I liked the shape of the Discovery uniforms, but the colors were bad, they worked far better in the season 2 Enterprise colors.
Well. That's why they were used in ST TOS. Don't forget, Genes idea was to depict a realistic space ship in action. Fancy uniforms are something for the bankett, not the daily routine job.
@@censorshipsucks9493 Yeah, they were designing so fast, that members of Starfleet were wearing mix-matched uniforms....
Take for instance, Star Trek First Contact... When the rescued Worf off of the Defiant, he was wearing one of the old uniforms that we all knew and loved, while the Enterprise crew sporting their new studs
@@acmenipponair ...Banquet? you mean?
Never watched a single episode of Star trek series but i gave this a try even tho its connected with ST discovery. I loved the first episode of strange new world.
@@gilbertgodfrey1818 i think this and Voyager are the easiest Pilots to watch and a good gateway into Star Trek.
Love TNG and my favorite is DS9 but Farpoint and Emissary aren't exactly easy watches
The brother’s name is George Samuel Kirk. The writers of SNW should have known that only Jim calls him Sam (“What are Little Girls Made Of”). I didn’t catch the Robert April Easter egg, probably because they changed his race. I wouldn’t mind except they dashed my aspiring writer dreams of retconning him as Roberta April.
His race? You mean he wasnt human? Here I was thinking all they’d done was change the skin colour of a minor character from an animated series. Humans are all one race……different colours, nationalities and cultures, but one race.
@@catzkeet4860 Last time I used the words ‘skin color’ I was also accused a racist. Which is why I don’t give a rats ass what you think.

Glad to say that I did not miss any of these 😅 and I paused a few times during the star chart scene to read names of all those systems 🤘🤘
Yep. Like most of these "you missed" videos they are badly titled.
It was nice to see the USS Archer in the form of an Hermes Class Scout Starship.
I gotta say, hearing Dex's voice is like a warm blanket every time.
The Gorn have come a long way.... and that got dark quick!!
Which is interesting since Gorn first contact occurred in ToS (Arena) but I guess that is one of the many things that have been retconned for no really good reason.
@@rjmercer042 Gorn first contact has not happened yet, they are listed as unconfirmed reports
@@The_Irish_Fox Security Chief Noonien Singh described her experience with them in great detail. That's NOT an unconfirmed report
@@ulphil08 exactly, down to knowing about their breeding practices and what they are called. They disappeared an entire colony ship and yet there was either no investigation/search or they were really inept in doing it... and no follow up to this potential threat species afterwards.
@@ulphil08 the pad on her states it like that I’m just repeating what I saw in the show
The name “Noonien Singh” didn’t ring a bell? Certainly seems worth mentioning! I’m guessing this will be explored (or at least explained) in a future episode, especially since the Eugenics Wars were called out by name.
thank the all mighty - no one was crying in this Trek!!!
Sam Kirk was previously mentioned in the episode What Are Little Girls Made Of? and said he had three children. What happened to the older kids before the episode in which he appears (dead) and what happened with his little surviving son, mystery.
Sam Kirk was meant to appear in the 2009 movie; the older boy who young Kirk greets when he is driving his stepfather's car was Sam, and had a complete scene in which he left home and said goodbye to his little brother. Why was he changed into some unrelated boy in edition, mystery.
I loved this 1st episode of strange new worlds it was great. I'm so glad every week isn't a cliffhanger. I live for the resolve at the end of each show. I noticed that sick-bay had squirt bottles just like in the original series. Chapel is sorting them out in a drawer at the end of the episode.
I love that they say Easter eggs you missed. I am fairly observant and actually did remark on almost all of this things except the chef.
You really lost it for me when you missed the first Easter Egg: The moment USS Archer came on screen, before we even knew its name, it was clearly a Hermes class scout from Franz Joseph Design's Star Fleet Technical Manual in the 70s, a design canonized in Wrath of Khan. Next, you missed that "Admiral Bob," was Robert April, Enterprise's first captain, and Pike's mentor in Starfleet. You really need someone who knows TOS and TAS to do these.
I think you mean Saladin class.
@@DarthVader-1701 No, I mean Hermes class. It's the scout/exploration variant on the same hull.
Thank you!
@@Lemurion287 They're both scout ship designs. In fact, there's almost no distinction between the two designs, aside from some minor alterations. Since the neck on the USS Archer is cut out, there's really no way to tell if it is Saladin or Hermes.
Are we sure it was a Hermes-class, and not a Saladin-class destroyer? Unlikley, but not impossible
It's worth noting that Sam Kirk, while we never actually meet him alive in TOS, is a little more fleshed out. In that From him we get what is to our knowledge James T Kirk's only surviving blood relative. Sam's son Peter.
his full name was George Samuel Kirk.
The Admiral "Bob" April. In cannon Robert (Bob) April was the original captain of the Enterprise on it's initial 5 year mission.
One episode of Strange New Worlds was better than all of the episodes on Discovery combined.
No, but to each their own.
I think that Admiral Robert April would have made this list, since it is a long awaited live action appearance of the 1st ever captain of the 1701. Just saying
When does someone actually say "April" when addressing the Admiral? I watched it twice and only heard him referenced as "Bob" or "Admiral".
You might try calling it Easter Eggs You "Might" Have Missed. I thought there would be some cool things I missed but, the USS Archer, shuttle Stamets, Chief Kyle and of course they kept mentioning Kirk coming on board, I laughed when I saw it was Sam. The Gorn was hardly an easter egg as it was talked about in detail, same as General Order One and how this mission made them think of calling it "The Prime Directive". You might have included the new Security Officer being a "Noonien-Singh", possibly a genetically enhanced human created by Doctor Noonien-Soong. The final episode of Picard showing Doctor Soong with the folder project named "Khan" was pretty cool.
Khan's Last name Noonien-Singh, are they Related?
@@tonymickens8803 yes. They are.
It's been pretty heavily covered that she's a descendant of Khan. Not a Soong.
@@tonymickens8803 Khan mentioned having a wife in WoK. Maybe a daughter too?
@@they_call_me_yeeter ...so, you've not watched the final episode of Picard? Spoilers.
You are awesome
Not an Easter egg but no one has mentioned yet how closely Pike's character is built on elements of the original Pike's characterisation in The Cage and The Menagerie (except for the really obvious radiation disfigurement, and that also appeared in ST:D), when played by Jeffrey Archer. The melancholic brooding that opens the pilot (not that Mount is much good at brooding for long), retiring to his room to have a drink, just as Archer did, except the original doctor brought the drink, the lines about tired of people dying ...
Visually I like what I saw in the first episode. I'm afraid this series might fall prey to the same "I'm so cool" humor that was seen in most of the ST:TNG movies. It was way over the top I thought. Whichever character the camera focused on had a one liner just waiting to drop on us. I do hope that gets toned down. Looking forward to episode two.
yes, they got me on Kirk..I had to stop and rewind a few times there. heh
See how good a Star Trek episode can be when it's a problem solving plot with no ridiculous villain like in the movies.
Pretty sure I saw Scalos on the star chart. I would like to see a screen shot of the full chart.
The Argus Array was on the system map as well.
And Pike arriving on Enterprise on the shuttle, seems to me, it's reference to Star Trek: The Motion Picture Kirk arriving on Enterprise.
Actually, the Shuttle Stamets could also be named after the real life mycologist, Paul Stamets...
More like the Discovery character was obviously named after the mycologist. Then the shuttle was named after whichever.
I like this new startrek series. Its awesome.....
You must be easily amused...
Star Trek things in a Star Trek show are *not* Easter Eggs- they’re examples of continuity.
Plenty of continuity errors in it too.
In E1, at 22:53, we see an external image of Enterprise approaching the Archer, and Pike, in voice over, says “Life signs, Mister Spock”. I have listened to this several times with my eyes closed and I swear to you that it’s Shatner’s voice. If I’m right, that’s got to be one of the greatest Easter Eggs of all time. If I’m wrong, we’ll… it wouldn’t be the first time.
WOW, just looked it up (it’s 20:53 for me though) and I think you might be right.
it also references gene roddenbury's andromeda by conflating gorn breeding with the magog.
Not sure that continuity (e.g., with the map of planets) should be considered Easter eggs. But the list was fun. You did miss one obvious reference/Easter egg, which was La'an Noonien Singh, a reference to Khan Noonien Singh (as in Wrath of). I will be looking to see how her story unfolds and how it relates to Khan's.
Except for the system names on the star chart, I wouldn't consider any of these to be obscure or hidden enough to be called Easter Eggs.
i agree that easter egg is way way overused. but here is a couple i can call Easter eggs. not because they are hidden or even obscure. but because they are not being talked about. The reason for this is a mystery to me. (it might be because I saw the movies like 14 dozens times. lol)
The scene where Pike is making breakfast? is the same scene filmed in the exact same way (and I mean 'exact') where Capt Kirk was making breakfast, in a cabin, in the woods, for his lover upstairs.
AND
2) Singh on Pike's enterprise suggests raising shields and Spock starts to speak against it. but Pike raises the shield immediately and saves the ship from damage.
In wrath of Khan, Lt Savak says the same thing when meeting reliant (with Khan in command), but that time Spock puts her in her place and Kirk ignores the suggestion and the ship gets heavily damaged.
BOTH Captains tell them to 'Keep on reminding me of the regulations'
this is a great start but I keep finding this odd things like...doesn't the security chief has a notable similarity to the one in the Orville's season two?
I was thinking the same thing. Glad it wasn't just me.
Yeah i thought it was the same actress
She also bears a striking similarity to Drummer from The Expanse.
@@charlesajones77 indeed she does!!
@@clementcastro9725 only the eyes tell them apart.
For a list of Easter Eggs, you kind of missed the really really big one... twice! Admiral Bob! That's Robert April. First Captain of the Enterprise. Pike was his First Officer. He was originally seen (granted as an old white haired white guy) in the TAS Episode The Counter-Clock Incident. And was voiced by James Doohan.
Thats okay EVERYONE is apparently missing the even bigger ones. lol.
I noticed Cardassia Prime and Bajor...but at that time, they shouldn't be on that map...they got discovered way later
We actually don’t know that
We learned a lot of things are classified around starfleet
Cardassia was known of during that time, as a Cardassian poet in exile lived on Vulcan during this period. However, the authoritarian Cardassian Union wouldn't begin annexing nearby worlds like Bajor for several decades, until the early 24th century.
We don't know _when_ first contact occurred between Cardassians and the Federation, though.
Who says they got discovered way later? That's never been stated. Just because the audience first sees them in TNG, doesn't mean they were first encountered in-universe in the 24th century.
The Cardassians were first mentioned during star trek the next generation which was the 24th century. They as well as the ferengi are unknown during the 23rd century.
What did pike say to chapel??? Sounded like damn the ramparts doctor….
You missed Zahia from Disco on the screen also!
A few comments here. They got Sam Kirks mustache perfect. Lucky there’s No killer flying raw chicken on the Enterprise. We learn that the Gorn like there food rare…Kirk was very lucky in “Arena”. Spock should have signed a prenup.
I'm pretending that scene with T'Pring wasn't with Spock, it was with Stonn. Then the two of them decide to conspire on how to get rid of Spock. I don't understand why a script writer with any knowledge of or respect for "Amok Time", the relationship between T'Pol and Koss on "Enterprise.", or general knowledge about Vulcans and their marriage/bonding rituals could ever come up with that depiction of T'Pring and Spock.
You missed the cameo by Robert Duncan McNeil (Tom Paris of Voyager) when Pike address the entire crew.
At 17:05 mark. He almost looks like Scotty.
“WHAT MOUTH?” 😂
I have to find this online
No one mentioned the Easter eggs i see in the opening credits. Like the rotating ball ship that we see in Star Trek Four: The Voyage Home. Or the Living Rock Creature we saw in Star Trek :TOS episode were said Creature wants to know which is stronger jn humans, good or evil.
Vindaloovians resemble humanoid eggs with a single prominent, blue eye in their tiny forehead above a horizontal mouth. They stand roughly one meter tall and are almost as broad, and have a wide variety of skin tones and hair colors (though they often shave their heads bald).
The Gorn are probably going to be a major ongoing threat on this show.
The tash was weird.
So new Magog like from Andromeda got it 😳
I saw Talos. It's 4th moon will be integral in James Kirk's life.
Also interesting: Admiral Bob is none other than Robert April, first Captain of the Enterprise 1701.
No mention of the Noonian-Sighn name on Number 1? HOW do you overlook the easter-egg reference to one of Star Treks greatest villans?
I loved it. A ship, a crew, explore planets, dots connected. I couldn't keep from laughing when it was Spock who got his shirt off in the first episode. Nice one.
As a huge fan of the original series, this episode did not disappoint!
You missed the fact that the admiral who recruits Pike is named Robert April. That's the name of the previous captain of the Enterprise before Pike, and who appears (as a white man) in the original Star Trek: The Animated Series.
That's all good, but how was the actual episode?
A first dome aka Silent Running as the core of a Starbase.
hey, just so you know, Paul Stamets is actually the name of a real person, who is alive right now, who is an expert in mycology. the star trek character is named after him.
Would naming the shuttle, "Stamets", would that be an Easter mushroom?
Didnt really miss much since im not watching it. Currently rewatching my dvds of BSG atm. The Reboot from 2004. Enterprise felt like the last good Star Trek to be honest.
Wow, Black Bolt from Doctor Strange 2
Or inhumans
I really enjoyed watching the first episode and I'm ready for the next.
This may have been mentioned, but the "ringing phone" comment is because his communicator is sitting on a table in front of a really old (even in this time) rotary dial phone.
BTW, it is "ARCHOR" NOT "ARCHER" ; )
Glad that someone already caught the "Admir Bob" which proves what I've always said about this guy. He has no idea what he is talking about and just reads from script. He assumes these are Easter Eggs we missed. If your a TRUE fan and have followed along your entire life as I have (watched since 1966) then you missed nothing and caught every single one. Ill bet this guy has no idea what the mission briefing was for the USS Archer either. Lol read it. It's pretty interesting. It's included on the screen with the crew listing for the Archer.
Also La'an Noonien-Singh is Related to Khan somehow.
Just watched episode #2.
This is going to be a great series.
Giid flow to the storyline. They don't spend too much time on feelings and relationships. It's ALL part of the bigger idea of the show.
I may be wrong here but doesn’t the security guard at the retinal scan look like Benedict Cumberbatch?
The ship is not named after Stametz from Discovery; it is named after a scientist of the same name. Likewise, the Archer is most probably named after Capt. Archer's father who developed the first warp engine.
Warp Five engine, and I don't regard Babe's farmer dad as canon, ONLY Glenn Corbett from "Metamorphosis" is the real Zephram Cochrane in my book[s].
@@LoneBrowncoat OK.

How did you miss Robert April ?
Paul Stamets the character is named after Paul Stamets the actual scientist, who is an award-winning mycologist, which is basically a mushroom scientist.
You know the ship could be named after Archer, the warp engine pioneer, and not the captain.
I thought that Kirk was the first federation member to actually meet the Gorn? No-one knew what they where or even what they looked like until the fight was on screen.
You should do a video on the copious number of continuity errors with original Trek.
I enjoyed the nurse Chapel set up. but what i don't understand is Spock marriage proposal. How does that fit with the Uhura relationship?
Don’t think this series has anything to do with Abrams.
You missed one doing general 1 part of this video you can spot star base 1, straight from star trek online
Wait. Hold on. If the Gorn appear in TOS as first contact how are they mentioned so familiarly in Sing's childhood story?
Hopefully this means they have wised up and are going back to making true Trek.
The background on the Gorn was actually pretty disturbing, and I really felt terrible for Singh.
The bridge is not 'tos'. These people would put ww1 planes in the American civil war.
technical.. this is a 24century map on a 23 century Spaceship.. in this time the federation dosnt know of Cardassia or Bajor
We actually don't know when the Federation first encountered Cardassians and Bajorans. Just because we first see them on DS9 in the 24th century, it doesn't mean that's when they were first discovered in-universe.
@@craigd10 Wrong, btw. We first met the Cardassians in TNG, Episodes " The Wounded" and " Chain of Command" 2 Parter among a few other episodes. Then they returned in DS9.
