    What better reason to start a UA-cam channel than “as a personal journal”. Very interesting Q&A. Thank you. 👏👏👍😎

    Happy Christmas 👍. UA-cam is a fun hobby and I like you get a buzz out of just trying to make each video better with each one I do. Interacting with viewers can also be fun especially when they share local info. Visiting Ireland will give your channel a massive boost as there is international interest in that Country. We were amazed by the response when we went 👍 Stay safe.

    As a recent subscriber can I just say how much I enjoy all your videos. The friendly conversational style is so much more natural than some other travel UA-camrs. Yours are very much the "having a mate tell you where he has been" type and draw the viewer in.

    Happy Christmas to you Steve, and I hope to see you walking around Dartmoor, perhaps next year..cream teas on me. Thank you for all your hard work in making these fantastic pure escapism videos this year. There are many people out there like myself, that have relied on your cheerful videos in order to keep us sane, and for a few minutes, escape the harsh reality.

      @@steve-marsh Most definitely buy you both a Devonshire cream tea, it would be my pleasure after all the hard work you have done in making your brilliant videos. My favourite so far, camping under the bridge without a tent. Just so enjoyable watching you both having an adventure, and reminded me of when I use to do the same, in all weathers, when I use to go rock climbing. Just took my sleeping bag, no tent, but all my climbing gear. I look forward to seeing you in Devon.

    Happy New Year to you, Steve, and Szczęśliwego Nowego Roku to your partner.
    Talking of places in Scotland that are memorable - too many to mention! - I was struck by the beauty of the A816 road from Lochgilphead on Loch Fyne, across the Argyll peninsula to Crinan, (a fascinating little port at the western end of the Crinan Canal, take the detour at Cairnbaan), and on up the coast to Oban.
    It sweeps and winds following the coastline, just as picturesque as anything I've seen of the Northern 500, with views across to the northern end of Jura and then the Isle of Mull.
    There are historic monuments along the way, such as Dunadd hill fort, (take the turning left off the main road towards the Crinan Canal a bit beyond Cairnbaan). Reputedly the crowning place of the kings of Dalriada, you can still put your foot in the hollow of the rock at the summit which they reputedly did during the crowning ceremony, and the "cup and ring" stones around Kilmichael and Kilmartin , which show that the area was more intensively populated in prehistorictimes than it is now, though it's become more popular since I was there in the 1980's.
    The drive out from Glasgow ain't bad, either, once you get off the busy A9 along Loch Lomond at Tarbet over to the head of Loch Long at Arrochar ( or alternatively you can take the minor road from Dumbarton via Helensburgh to Faslane and high along the eastern side of Loch Long.) You climb up over the "Rest & Be Thankful" pass with the "Cobbler" to your left, before descending down to the head of Loch Fyne, through Inverary and Furnace, which will recall "Para Handy" stories if you've read the tales. There is a beautiful garden at Crarae.
    I used to visit there in the late spring, back end of May, with friends from the Worth Valley Railway to sail aboard the "Puffer" VIC32 out of Ardrishaig, and the countryside looked at its best then.
    You mention coming south when things hopefully return to "normality" again, and with your love of islands, the Scillies off the end of Cornwall would be a great place to visit. I enjoyed idyllic childhood holidays on the second largest, northernmost island of St Martins, with unspoilt sandy beaches and cliff paths looking out to the Atlantic. It's more popular now, but i believe you can still find quiet spots, Most people are attracted to the slightly showy attractions on Tresco, but the smaller isles are fascinating to visit.
    If you cross by sea on the "Scillonian III", it can be a test of your sea legs (it has the by-name of the "Great White Stomach Pump"!), so I wouldn't recommend just settling for a return day-trip from Penzance to St Mary's unless the weather forecast was very good! You could combine it with your projected Edinburgh to Penzance rail journey. All the Best, and keep on vlogging, they're always fascinating.

    • @steve-marsh
      @steve-marsh  3 роки тому +1

      Hugh, your knowledge is incredible and I take a lot of time to make notes on your replies in the book! A lot of these places I have not yet visited, so you are a well of inspiration. On one note though, I love Crinan and every time we've been there we seem to get lucky with the weather :) I would love to give the "Cobbler" a go, but I fear that could be another fail video due to my poor head for heights! Do you think we should give it a go anyway??? Particularly interested in getting on board the Scillonian - and ferry videos always do so well on here, hopefully on a stormy day :) Thanks again so much Hugh for your incredible support! Here's hoping some form of normality can return soon and we can get right down to the very southern tip of this island! Happy New Year to you, and your stab at Polish is much better than I could attempt! :)

      @hughrainbird43 3 роки тому

      @@steve-marsh A "stormy" "Scillonian" crossing, though not as long as the Northlink Aberdeen-Shetland sailing (about 2 hrs 45 mins) is a challenge to your sea-legs - to put it delicately - that I can assure you! We holidayed there for three idyllic summers in the late 1950's, and the crossing on the then "Scillonian II" after arriving on the steam-hauled overnight sleeping car train from Paddington, was to a poor sailor, as I was then, like some sort of ordeal that had to be undergone to reach the paradise that was the Scillies. We couldn't take the flying option, then provided by BEA with pre-War Dragon Rapide biplane aircraft, because we took our dog with us, and livestock weren't permitted on the aircraft.
      My wife is Polish, so I do have a working grasp of the language, and have enjoyed numerous trips to that fascinating country and enjoyed the hospitality of some wonderful friends there, We've seen many changes over the three decades we've been visiting. I remember your sleeper trip to Krakow, and I'm sure your partner would be able to suggest some more opportunities for interesting vlogging trips there, when travel gets easier again, as we all hope it will. Stay safe.

    Merry Christmas from Connecticut, Steve! Thanks for answering our questions--on Christmas, no less--about your travels and videos. Looking forward to more in 2021. While you're in lockdown, you might consider some lesser-known Edinburgh points of interest. Until you showed them, I had no idea that there were so many parks and other undeveloped outdoor places in the city, and they are beautiful. Great to see those videos. Now that the weather is colder, making hiking less appealing, what are some good indoor things to do (even though they may currently be closed to visitors)? For example, does the University of Edinburgh have museums with interesting collections? Are there some small museums that only get a footnote in the guidebooks? Thank you for the enjoyable videos, and Happy New Year!

    Hi Steve, I have been binging your videos for the last 4 or 5 days and not only do I love the way you wander around discovering places and people but also your fabulous accent. It's so nice to hear a Scot talking about Scotland; it adds flavour. I'm a Scot myself but I left Scotland years ago and miss it terribly. Traveling with you just brings it all back in such a nice way. Here's a suggestion for a wee visit; the Falls of Dochert at Killin, western end of Loch Tay. There's a Wade bridge and it's really spectacular. After that, take the loch side road to Aberfeldy, turn right onto the A 826 as far as Milton, then the A 822 through the Sma Glen to Amulree and Gilmerton. You'll be back in Edinburgh by nightfall and it's stunning all the way. Take care; look forward to more journeys. Aye, Christopher Pearson ( in Paris)

    Just watching your Q and A on Boxing Day Steve. I randomly found your Stonehaven video one day and since then have enjoyed many of your adventures. One thing I have learned from your videos is that when I make a visit to Shetland, something I had planned to do this year, I will be flying there rather than taking the ferry. It looked like a very rough crossing for you. By the way, as a railway person, I can clarify for you that the train you need for Devon or Cornwall is Cross Country Trains, you mentioned Trans Pennine but they only go as far south as Manchester airport. Thanks for all your videos and best wishes to you and your family.

    The problem with getting to St Kilda isn't just the journey itself (only by boat from Skye) but also the exorbitant cost of the boat trip too. It's around £450 per person for a round trip. You can also get stuck once you're there if the weather changes so you really need to be flexible on dates and take more food and drink than you require just in case, because there's nothing there. It's also a 4 hour trip one way. We had high hopes of going a couple of years ago but we decided against it because of these reasons.

    Glad to hear you will be coming back to Canada. Have you ever ridden VIA rail? From Vancouver all the way east or vice versa. I think you would like the mountains in jasper or Banff, Alberta. But watch for bears if you are walking the trails there and carry bear spray. A drive down the Glacier parkway from jasper to banff would blow your mind.

    Great Q&A session. You could make it a regular feature. Youve put the St.Kilda trip back on my radar. Its an all day trip from Leverburgh on the Isle of Harris, and if its too choppy to cross the Isle of Harris is stunning and plenty to keep you occupied. Im guessing it needs to be booked well in advance ...all those pesky tourists...haha

    • @steve-marsh

      Haha true! But I like your point about being stuck on Harris not being such a bad thing :) Cheers Michael, all the best!

    There’s no scheduled ferry service to St Kilda . It’s booked by private charter from Harris. You missed out Stovies, Cullen Skink, potato scones, cock a leeky soup and haggis pakora in your Scottish food question..

    Congratulations on such a lovely and surprisingly coherent Q&A session on Christmas Day! Hope you do get your trips next year but, whilst waiting for the end of lock-down why not get out to the Outer Hebrides? Give the Hebridean Way a go maybe? There's a lot of UA-camrs doing Lewis and Harris these days but not so many spending time on Barra, Eriskay or the Uists and some of the coast line there is incredible! - Oh, and I'd also love to visit the Small Isles.

    • @steve-marsh

      @@steve-marsh If you do decide to tackle Heb Way make sure you follow the walkers' guide notes NOT the cyclists'! I've seen so many poor souls trudging along the road for miles and totally missing the coastal path. Not much wonder it isn't as highly publicised as other long distance trails!

    Hi Steve, I would be very interested in the equipment you use for your blogs. What did you start with and how much have you modified your gear and your approach to filming? I was thinking about having a go and its mainly for my brother who is now house bound and I'm sure he would like to see a few films from our home town in Kent. Keep up the good work and I love your travels along the west coast of Scotland especially I was born in Oban.

      Funny enough part of the motivation for starting the channel was to share videos and adventures with my Dad who isn't so mobile these days. I use an old GoPro 8 mainly, and haven't upgraded for a while. It has its quirks and I sometimes hate it, but the advantages just about cancel out the disadvantages, so it's still my main camera (along with phone). The main difference for me through experience is just getting a bit better at editing (but still use a basic package for that too)

    Always carry a wee bottle of HP sauce in your daypack in case you're attacked by cows Just hold it up in front of their faces and stare them down (use mint sauce for cutthroat gangs of sheep).
    I think that you mentioned "bannock?" Bannock, believe it or not is bush soul food of various native peoples of Northern Canada and they have developed bannock preparation to an art form. They even have bannock cooking competitions during their get-togethers Why, you ask? The Hudson's Bay Company manned their posts all over the North with Orkney Men for a few hundred years They were tough, used to privation and trustworthy and they were the machinery of the HBC.They left a lot of their culture behind (and their genes) and now Native Northern Canada is quite old Northern Scottish.
