    I can't think of the Pegasus without thinking of the showdown between Admiral Kane and Commander Adama, where each had ordered the other's assassination. Her XO, aboard Galactica, and Starbuck, aboard Pegasus, each awaiting for the coded order that never came. The tension in that scene was palpable. So good!

      @@brianlindee220 Not his fault. It was a production decision, if any of this were actually real both ships would have survived. Lee was a highly trained colonial officer, and also not an idiot. The options for saving both his father and his ship would have been painfully obvious to him. Nukes, proper positioning, and not leaving his entire airwing behind, which by the way provided zero effective protection to the fleet (where are they gonna rearm and refuel?)

    After Cains assassination i would have immediately taken Pegasus as the flag ship with Galactica as a backup. I'm retired military. I know that Ron wanted to stay close to the original story line in this case but in real life, i would have had Lee Adama's ass teaching preschool after that.

      You would have had to rotate cains people off Pegasus as, well to avoid some sort of mutiny after what I saw it was less a command structure & more a, cult of personality over there Adama could never have had faith in those people Cain wasn't commanding a battlestar she was running a pirate ship murder rape kidnapping/pressganging civilians abandoning civilians to slow death by stranding them in deep space with no FTL(after stripping their vessels) to starvation or cylon discovery blackmarket trade amongst the senior officers no way Adama could have accepted those people under his command it's not as if they made much attempt to hide their actions being as deviant as, they are they didn't even see their conduct as, wrong how was he supposed to command such as, them how was he to command a battlestar fight cylons both within the fleet & without & hold his NOSE commanding a bunch of pirates all at the, same time!

      I was in the service. You do not have to follow unlawful orders. Which was what Cain gave. She was a trouble commander as well as a war criminal. She has civilians shot. Cannibalized civilian ships. Part of the military duty is to protect civilian.. she had no business being in command of anybody. She should have been relieved of her command thrown in the brig.

      I'm civilian (always have been) but even I saw zero sense in Adama staying on Galactica. The writers screwed up by making Pegasus too overpowered in relation to Galactica. Pegasus should've showed up with massive damage to her already to make Galactica as flagship (and Adama as admiral) a more logical choice.

    I loved both Cains. Lloyd Bridges really made the character over the top. Michelle Forbes, already a scifi veteran due to Star Trek TNG, really fit in as a prefect character. Esp with he Razor film to explain why she is the way she is. Both schools of thought between Cain and Adama are correct. Given their situations, but Cain is much more stronger militarily. And the discipline is more to be respected. But Adama started off the same way but realized to keep the fleet cohesive, the remaining govt had to be recognized.
    The new series is a lot more realistic thant he original. And ever notice all the Hans they would find on all the habitable planets as they went along? You can't tell me that their firepower could not have easily taken them over and started a new life?? But I think some of the original cast and characters were better in the original series then the new. But the new one had so many more twists!

      I liked the original more. Not because she didn’t do a good job but because I flipping hated that Moore and Ecks had the fetish of turning the best male characters in women. Starbuck was the smoking, drinking, gambling, womanizing, ace fighter pilot everyone in the late 70’s and 80’s guys wanted to be. Cain was the exact opposite of Adama in the og series with both being strong male characters where Adama was the defensive minded, loving, caring, and genuinely wanted to protect the last know pieces of humanity where as Cain was the offensive minded, devil may care military tactician who could care less about the civilians because he was hyper focused on making the cylons pay. It’s like Kirk and mirror universe Kirk. Ying and Yang. Boomer was literally the only black male pilot we saw or had and he was actually a good pilot and a fun character to have. But Moore had to turn Starbuck into a chick because, reason? Thrace was a good character in her own right just not as Starbuck. Cain being turned into a woman, because again reasons, she didn’t have the tactical mind we saw from Lloyd Bridges and she actively encouraged the rape of her former lover. Like what? Why? Boomer becomes a girl because, why again? Seriously they took the black warrior pilot and turned him into an Asian her whi also happens to be a skin job cylon? Just a lot of wasted potential.

    I see the two leaders, Adama and Cain, as analogous to Athena and Ares.
    Defensive strategic warfare "fighting to protect your friend", compared with aggressive tactical warfare "fighting to kill your enemy".
    This is both very much in line with the mythology-inspired nature of the series, but also quite indicative of real military doctrine, with a great many real-world nations and military leaders tending to lean one way or the other.
    As far as the ships themselves go, the Galactica has the class and history of an old Dreadnaught of our Earth, but the Pegasus feels more like a late-war WWII battleship, like an Iowa class. I have to love them both, but for different reasons.

    • @thesenceofmorality
      @thesenceofmorality 3 роки тому +3

      In a different universe Adama and Cain could be one hell of a team. The perfect balance of aimed aggression and valuing of soldiers lives. Adama would always do what was necessary but I think he blamed himself too much for losses suffered which ate away at him far more so then they did Admiral Cain. Granted she didn't cope with them well either but that is another conversation.

    The original Pegasus and Lloyd Bridges' Cain will always be my favorites. Seeing the Colonial equivalent of Gen. Patton was exciting. The conflict between the two commanders made me feel angry at them for not being able to come to terms. In contrast, the way the relationships in the Moore series played out, I felt more disappointment and disgust for the primary characters involved. In the original series I was able to root for both commanders and crews despite their differing approaches to fighting the war. In the Moore series, I could not find any way to feel hope for ADM. Cain or her crew.
    As far as the ships go, I prefer the original series over the Moore series but this is a minor thing as the Moore series ships were very exciting designs. I just prefer the original design, more.

      To be fair, Lee did show command potential when getting the Pegasus out of the binary star system, but he should have devoted himself to improving. There were numerous bad calls. Admiral Adama owns a certain portion of the blame. He allowed large portions of the crews of both battlestars to muster out, and he didn't insist that both ships continue to run training programs to keep their skills sharp.

      Agreed if one of the two ships had to be sacrificed ( & I'm not convinced either had to be)the logical choice was Galactica Pegasus being newer better armed much less battle worn it had 4 count them 4 fighter bays to Galactica's one operational flight pod (port side) as the starboard pod had been turned into a gift shop of all things & as far as I can tell the whole show if I'm not mistaken they only lanched & recovered sorties from the port flight pod adama should have transferred his flag & moved on sentimentality be damned not the logic tree of a real leader if I were Adama after the death of cain after a suitable amount of time (to keep the peace between the two vessels) I'd have swapped ships & Crews I would never have trusted cains people kidnapping rape & murder she operated Pegasus like a pirate ship & they were complicit with this conduct not the quality of people I'd show my back to but then I'm off the street I hear BEHAVIOR not words & I don't like what their behavior says !

      @@ryanarment5393 not only did Adama screw up by allowing massive amounts of the military crews to “settle” on new caprica but he’s could be called incompetent by not using the time orbiting the planet to repair the starboard side flight pod and to replace the Galactica’s armor plates that we lost or stripped off before the fall of the colonies. According to the tech specs of the Peggy, she had the capability to actually build new Vipers and Raptors. So not only did Adama not train new people to fly, he didn’t repair or bring the Galactica to full operational status. Then his son sacrificed the survivors best and most powerful military asset to save the old barely operational Galactica. For those saying Lee was stupid, i propose this counter lol.
    You are not considering personnel. Risking that many trained personnel on an all or nothing gambit was STUPID and lee new it. He played the only card Adama left him and stripped pegasus of her birds and excess crew and saved Adamas ass. Personally, i think that was a mistake, even half crippled through a lack of manpower. If she had her air wing, both ships would have survived. The ramming thing is explainable as well. The pegasus simply had no personnel for damage control, and Lee was 100% offensive trying to take all fire off galactica. Damage mounts up quickly like that, and ftl tech in this universe doesn't like bumps, so it probably went offline in the early stages of getting 4 base stars' attention.
    In the rescue scene, when Pegasus jumps in and adama realises what's going on, he said "damm you Lee, thank you Lee." Meaning adama knew he was wrong and admits Lee has just saved the day.

    As one of the most advanced ships in the fleet of Battlestars, its likely that either the best commander would captain it or they needed one of the most aggressive which was the case in both series. The fact that Galactica was soo old meant that the most ambitious captains didnt want it. Unlike the Galactica, Pegasus assumed they were the last and there were only a few civilian vessels. Kane did not have a strategy apart from what any aggressive captain would have- revenge. By bullying her command, she was left with a weakened sub-command. Kane in the original series was also involved in a skirmish that ended a whole section of the colony fleet yet he was acclaimed for surviving? In both cases the superior armour and firepower was likely the only reason humanity survived as its doubtful galactica could have take such punishment. Did Adama ever discuss what his views of Kane was before the Cylon attack? Why was Galactica of such interest to the Cylons attack on the colonies vs a more dangerous destroyer as Pegasus was. Was it just that Galactica could not be hacked? The Cylons must have known that Pegasus survived even if they could not know where it jumped to escape and it knew that Pegasus was offline in orbital shipyard so was also unhackable yet Galactica was the target. The Cylons must have feared adama more yet they had deep cover Cylons on board.

    Helena Cain was basically a War Criminal.. that you could hardly blame given the Cylons killed billions of humans.
    but, her dismissal of "Civilians" as simply a means to her own military ends, flys in the face of what had to be an Oath to PROTECT those Civilians at all costs..
    a Cost she never took seriously, or to heart, by her easy consumption of Civilian ships and materials, with no regard at all for how defenseless she was now leaving those ships.
    I do like the newer Pegasus, and never noticed the massive increase in the Engines, or that it was supposedly the most advanced BS in the fleet.
    Lloyds Cain was all about duty, honor, destroying the Cylons.. i dont think he would cannibalize Civilian ships, leave them adrift to die at the hands of the Cylons, as Cain would/did without a care.
    a very nice twist/change up of Personalities in that scenario.

    • @Brainfryde
      @Brainfryde 3 роки тому +1

      I found the twist ruined the lore. The new Cain is more of a tale told by a civilian a decade later. Even discarding the oath to protect, no military commander would do any of the things from the show. If not from a general sense of humanity, then from the known nature of military command. If she violates civilians, they are no longer the military. And you now have a crew all asking the same question: why should we follow when we think we could do better. Executing officers doesn't win you loyalty or fear; it earns you comment in the captain's log: lost at sea.

    • @RodgerRamjet
      @RodgerRamjet 3 роки тому

      @@Brainfryde i guess you just have to go with " you are assuming its you, against the Entire Cylon fleet.. is that a "winnable scenario" for anyone ? No, reality is, you will still die, you are now just choosing how".. that is the thinking i think the writers were trying to convey.. and once you cross into the " We're going to die anyway, so whats a few more civvies deaths" mentality, true Military duty is history.. least thats my take, and she was already a dictatorial commander, now, willing to execute anyone questioning her commands, with enough like-minded people under her, to ensure it WOULD be carried out... I didnt think it ruined it, they werent trying to replicate BSG from 1978, only use it as reference.. and i loved her character.. in that i wanted her to die.. slowly.. and know it...... which is the mark of great writing.. but, thats MY take..

    OG Cain’s long term plan if occupying Gamorrah as a staging base for attacking the Cylons was totally unrealistic. Two Battlestars and a small portion of what’s left of humanity against the might of the Cylon Empire. They always should’ve followed the fleeing plan. Though Baltar knowing Adama’s plan of going to the 13th tribe sorta messed that all up.
    Plus they found that other Earth like planet much closer to there level of Tech mid season. I would’ve stayed there and built them up to stand against the Cylons if a final stand was all they’d get. At least they had a larger population to draw from with that other world.
    On the later series, Lee bungled big time sacrificing the newer battle star, with pilot training sims and a proper viper manufacturing bay. So many nerds have broken down much better plans and tactics to keep both ships. But if one had to go drop the bucket and keep the beast.
    Well that’s enough of my ramblings baked out of my mind. Cheers.

      That was inferred, yes. However, there was a deleted scene that showed it wasn't. Larson wanted to bring the Pegasus back in season 2, which of course, never happened. What Apollo and Starbuck didn't want Sheba to see, was a "half-man/half-goat" creature, that would have revealed what Count Iblis actually was.

There strategy from TBE beginning should have the Galactica being the ship whose crew had transferred to the Beast and if necessary the Bucket should have bee sacrificed. That would be more difficult the bucket (Galactica) couldn't take as much fire so they should've sacrificed the Galactica and a civilian ship if necessary to keep the Beast (Pegasus). Hi, I liked this tutorial. I am a fan of the original Battlestar Galactic. There were some aspects of the reimagined show I did like, mostly with the ship. The rest of show was just awful, to many absurd plot twists and the like. More of a Battlestar purest. It really irked me with the reimagining. I always believed that the original Battlestar could have continued on in the same style with obviously new story lines and same character but obviously with new actors. You cannot reinvent the wheel so don't mess with a classic. But it's too late now, the entertainment folks already did. 🙄but by far the classic is the best. Thanks for sharing. I definitely prefer the re-imagined Pegasus, an absolute dreadnought of immense proportions. Cain in that series was cruelly interesting, murdering without mercy to achieve her military goals. Even facing death, she spit out, "Frack you!" as karma mowed her down. The Lloyd Bridges Cain was just reckless and pompous, and not nearly as interesting a character. The new Pegasus was given a giant farewell, too, diving into one Basestar as it delivered a right hook to another as the flight deck broke away from the main body of the ship.

    According to some of the script drafts, had Larson's BSG gotten a second season, Pegasus was planned to rejoin the fleet. After it was presumed destroyed, as the scripts explained, the Cylon forces chasing Galactica seemed to dwindle somewhat - that is, the throw weight they were able to send was reduced. Adama and crew noticed this but never knew why...until Pegasus returned. They had been shadowing the Cylons all along and doing what Cain did best; hit and run. Whether this is true or not, I don't know as I haven't seen the actual scripts, just read summaries of them. It would, however, have made a very cool story.
    As for RDM's Pegasus...there was so much right with the battle of New Caprica...and yet so much wrong. Pegasus should never have been sacrificed, but given the overall all "we're at the bottom of the barrel and now we're scraping wood* feel of the show, having a second battlestar would have changed some of the later dynamics quite a bit.

    Probably the only terrible part about the new series was watching Lee torpedo his ship for no reason.
    Pegasus was a vastly superior ship with significantly reduced crew requirements, which made it the perfect ship to engage the fleet at New Caprica.
    Add in extra fighters and crew from the galactic and it would have been a devastating force.
    Hell, they could have sent both ships and wiped the floor with the cylons and been back before there was any danger to the fleet.
    So many options and they picked the absolute worst one. Very frustrating to watch, given how tactically intelligent the Adamas are.
    Le sigh… Fracking loved the Pegasus. Infinitely better looking than The Bucket.
