Your comment about the Philippines having its own "brand" of music was spot on. We have what is known as OPM (Original Pilipino Music). SB19 was perceived as a KPop group because of their ties and training with a Korean company. That made people think "that's not Filipino". However, they forgot that the members of SB19 ARE Filipino. Therefore, anything they release is OPM. You could say PPop was not a thing until SB19 came along. They established it and continue to advocate for it - until the world knows PPop.
    Peace! Great RV as ever.

This. They were kids being managed by a small Korean company so though they were creating music that was very Filipino, they were perceived as copycats of KPop because of how they were being presented (something that they had no control over). I will say that they would have done it differently because they actually did when they got full reins on all the creatives after they were abandoned by the said management during the pandemic. Ikako, Mapa, What?, and many more were what they birthed when they were left to their own devices.
To tell you the truth the Filipino standard wouldn’t have let these boys get into the industry thus all the disrespect regardless of the Korean branding (which again I will say wouldn’t have been their first choice). But I love how every bit of stone thrown at them they actually used to set a new thing. They were called gay, they wear skirts, makeup, earrings, and grow their hair long. They were called copycats, they put together shows and make music that haven’t been seen or heard in the Philippines nor in Korea. They were creative in getting their music out there, avoiding the old ways of doing it as much as they can. And now the Philippine industry and other country’s could even do a study on how they are doing it because it’s new.
They are showing that they are just artists who want to make art. They create from who they are, and say Bazinga to those whose minds are so limited. These boys plus their team are changing how entertainment and music is being done in the Philippines, even Marketing too. They are calling the shots, doing what they want with the little resource they have. They are more than admirable seriously.

The boys were also trained for public speaking and handling interviews but Josh being street smart and a strong person since he was exposed to the harsh world at a very young age, really shines bright during interviews. The "defender" comment about him really fits Josh even until now. Being the protective older brother of the group, he always steps up and is not afraid to speak up against those who throws shade against the other members. He also has a calm demeanor and is really smart in handling tricky questions.

Josh is extra protective over Stell because he admitted that Stell's his idol even before that's why he asked Stell via social media if he could join Stell's Se-eon group, which Stell and his co-members in Se-eon obliged and granted Josh's request to be their new member that time.

i had the privilege of seeing them up close when they weren't popular yet but promoting their song. They travelled everywhere in the country. The clip where they performed in a mall, that's where it is, another city on another island in the philippines. They performed a bts cover. They were so good and i was amazed because it was one of those few times i saw a pop group do justice for those covers. And their vocals! Amazing!

this is why every a'tin is so protective of the boys. as we learn more about them, we relate to their struggles. Seeing how they overcame it all was inspirational. There was a time that Josh said they had to be tough to defend each other because noone else would, but now they felt like they now have a'tin, they are able to conquer it all. Personally, i watched them from afar, and was almost sure they'll fade away because the Philippine music industry is really brutal. But they fought it through. These boys are amazing! I never fangirled for anyone before until this group.

Dude same.. I'm not into pop music, Kpop or any other pop groups from any country. I'm into rock and metal and these boys have me addicted since I found them only last year. And the funny thing was, I got introduced to them because someone showed me Gento, saying it's trending on TikTok, and was expecting me to hate on em like they were. But I watched it and was like, uhh what? This is actually good. Then I went down the rabbithole from there. They're annoyed coz I've been raving about them ever since rofl. I've never been truly this impressed with a "pop" group before. I say "pop" because their repertoire does not entirely consist of just pop songs. They're so versatile and I truly believe they can sing whatever genre they wanted really well. And so good in every aspect of music producing as well. AND humble at that. I hope they gain more recognition in the music industry as they really deserve it. Much love to these boys.

It blew my mind, too when I read that for every song that has choreo, they need to practice 1000x because as Coach Hongganda said, 'practice will never betray you.'
What's amazing about their discipline is that they still do it today. The intricate movements of Moonlight shows how much they've practiced for it. And not only that, everytime they're preparing for a concert, they will still practice for all their previous songs (which I'm sure are already imprinted in their muscle memory). There's no other PPop groups that have this discipline.

SB19 is being called the Kings of PPOP today for no reason.
They paved the way so that the other PPOP groups before them could run freely. I could say that the new generation of PPOP today doesn't receive such harsh treatment as SB19 went through before.
Fair enough, SB19 is being treated as royalties. They worked so hard to earn that respect. I don't know if you knew but they are actually really big in the philippines, tv commercials, magazines, billboards, concerts ,you named it, they're everywhere. They're one of the most sought after ambassadors in the philippines and as far as I know, their talent fees are millions so only big brands can actually have them.

No one deserves to be disrespected like that...like what in the world someone's sexual preference got to do with their music???? I am from the Philippines but I have zero tolerance to these kind of people... These are real people not some thing that we own...not because they are in the spotlight and we the fans are one of the main reasons why they are successful by suporting them, watcging their concert by stuff by them does'nt mean we own them...They are there to talk about there music...that is so rude...kudos to SB19 despite all that bashing all the negative comments about how they look when they are starting...they stayed together and continue what they worked so hard for...thank you for featuring SB19 I am also a new fan of theirs...I am so inspired of their story how they started and what they are achieving now is just amazing...

Ken once said that the best revenge is to be successful. They kept their head down and worked hard for their dreams. What i like about the boys is that if you look at their interviews and how they interact with their fans and how they treat each other did not change at all. They showed their true self unlike some artists who pretend to be somebody they are not.

The Philippines is actually quite lgbt-friendly, probably the friendliest country in Asia and definitely one of the friendliest in the world as far as respecting one's sexuality, despite the fact that it is a VERY Christian society. It's also semi-matriarchal where mothers are very much appreciated and are often breadwinner/ head of household. However, reporters and media outlets there are VERY tactless, to say the least, as you all have seen on the video.
That was sadly, not the worst things said about SB19. They were the pioneers of P-pop, which because they were managed by a Korean agency (and the members themselves are avid Kpop and K-culture fans, Pablo was recruited by their teacher because he was a student at a Korean Center trying to learn Korean), their earlier music and style were inspired by Kpop idols. They were called cheap copycats, ugly wannabes, etc. Just because they didn't look as polished and styled as Kpop idols (the members bought and did their own makeup, clothes, etc.). They were bashed at face value, people not even listening to any of their music and not knowing how talented, humble, hardworking, and inspiring they were. Quite a few of their fans now are admittedly bashers before.

SB19 pioneered PPOP and founded the PPOP community. It was not accepted in the PH until now though it is slowly getting traction. They received all the hate and scrutiny to pave the way for this type of musical style. It’s mind blowing that boy groups have been around as far as I know in the 60’s like the Jackson Five and 70’s in Puerto Rico when the globally famous Menudo originated. Filipinos accepted and idolised international boy groups yet they can’t accept their own. Having lived abroad for 27yrs, when I discovered SB19 over a year ago I instantly fell in love and beamed with pride and my heart sank when I found out how they were hated and bashed and that is still ongoing.

He always says if anyone wants someone to hate they can hate on him and he won't even fight back but the moment someone says something about a member he's always the first to speak up. Being the oldest in the group he really embraces being the protector

Just a caveat to take Casual Chuck docus with a grain of salt. There are things added and/or jumbled to add drama to his videos. Note on the part where he alluded everyone left except Stell, it actually didn't happen after their debut. It was during their training days (pre-debut days) and Ken was not yet part of the group. So basically Ken was not one of the members who quit then eventually changed their minds. Also at that time Justin was an intern in their company and was just going with the flow. So while the others left, he would visit Stell and practice with him from time to time until Josh and Pablo decided to return. Which is when they started looking for the fifth and final member and this is when Ken entered the picture. He auditioned after Josh and Pablo returned.

When I first saw that video, maybe a year ago, I was shocked. Even as a Filipino, to be asked these kinds of a questions from supposed professional media people made me wonder why this kind of judgement was pressed on them. I keep saying that I don't remember another Filipino artist who was treated this way by Filipino press during a debut or a launch. It made me think that it's mostly because the Philippines at that time had already ridden the KPOP wave and seeing anyone in our country trying to do something like it are immediately looked down upon. This is why the rising PPOP groups have such respect for SB19, because they shouldered all this judgement, bashing, and disdain especially from KPOP stans. With them overcoming all the hate without even any major connections, succeeding despite of it, the new groups won't need to experience this type of judgement especially from Philippine media.

That MV which had "09.02.2019" is Bazinga. Pablo had had enough and wrote this song for their haters. ❤ I cannot watch that full interview to this day. They were beyond rude!!!
Trust me, these kinds of questions will not fly anymore here.

SB19 paved the way for Ppop. They were the first pop group in the Philippines after so many years of not having one here. Ppop wasn't even a thing then, so I'd say they're yhe first Ppop group. And that's why they received all the hate and bashing being called kpop wannabes/copycat and ugly/not hitting the standards for visuals. What they do and represent were all new to Filipinos. OPM (Original Pinoy Music) are mostly ballads, rock and novelty songs. You can see more of that interview and other hate comments they received in Casuya Chuck's "if you hate sb19, watch this" video. Josh and Pablo stepped up as the oldest and leader of the group and gave spot on answers.

I strongly believe that Stell is the heart of the group because he's inherently kind, loyal and generous. He and Josh have known each other for years before SB19. He's been in and out of Justin's house that his parents look for him more than they miss Justin 😅. He and Pablo collaborate more with their singing than most members. And when Ken was all alone in Manila, he'd stay over at the training room just to keep him company. You can all see with their interactions that all of the members gravitate towards Stell.

Nah. Thise reporters were downright rude. Btw the one who insulted Stell's dead now. Too bad he did not see how big the boys are now. It would have been a nice 'slap' on the face moment. Looking forward to your RV on the rest of chuck's vids. Merci ❤

No, the one who asked about Stell's gender orientation is still alive, but the other one who also threw some rude questions was Isah Red, a newspaper entertainment columnist, he's the one who died of cancer, 2 years ago if I'm correct.

Just to correct some info, PPOP actually existed even before SB19, but it was not perceived greatly by general public. It was when SB19 gained attention that made a lot of people think "Oh, it's possible for the PH industry to have a kind of this group" thus pioneering the rise of PPOP nowadays. Really hoping in your free time you could also watch The Juans interview with SB19 and also Toni Talks, you'll get to know them deeper, hear their actual stories from their own mouths. Thank you always for meaningful reaction videos! 🍀

hey guys! thanks for the update, loved your discussions after the video!
My personal theory about being compared to kpop as non-complementary to some certain people here in the Philippines is that the korean culture has been really REALLY popularized in our trends/media/products in the country that some can find it resentful to see people prefering korean products compared to filipino products, how everyone will rush to something if it gets slapped with a korean lable on it and making filipino commercials harder to promote.
So when the boys present themselves as a ppop group, people redirect their misjudgments on kpop onto them by calling them copycats or a "wanna be kpop group" that isnt authentically showing the Filipino culture and how their growth is going to stem from their roots to a korean production.
Of course thats not true, the boys has always worn their love and pride as Filipinos on their sleeves and now they've proven it with how much they wave their flag, talent, and culture in their works to show how Filipinos can create amazing things.
Antis will still gravitate to the kpop copycat insult to downplay their validity whenever they can and honestly it gets funnier the longer the boys keep proving them wrong

There have been groups that tried to do ppop (before sb19) but sb19 was the first successful one to really find their sound, break boundaries, and capture the hearts of the filipino fans (at least imo).

  • @mlm_1819

The organic growth and humble beginnings of SB19 is what made them who they are today🌱 These are the reason why A'tin are so protective of the boys. They paved the way for the generation of PPOP groups because they took the brunt of those ridiculous questions from the press that newer groups would not have to go through today.
Filipinos are fans of KPOP and didn't have PPOP groups of our own so when SB19 came out, they were the only boy group out there promoting as a PPOP group which was so new to the culture since we haven't really seen that before from within our own country. It took (and still taking) time for the Filipino community to fully accept and support PPOP groups. Hopefully it changes soon and more support and appreciate our boys and other PPOP groups rather than only supporting other POP communities

27:01 to answer your question. Most Filipinos loves kpop or korean culture as a whole. that's why if they see up and coming pop artists in the Philippines they always tend to compare them to kpop if they're good enough or just wannabes and that's where the "Kpop wannabes" started. And also, Sb19 were the most active group that time so they basically took all the hate. The term Ppop doesn't exist yet that time btw.
