Virginia Moss, this is to allow the cows to be less stressed for the two months before they have their calves. A lot of stress on a cow that close to having her calf can sometimes cause the cow to lose the calf also (which is a very sad day if it happens).

I work on a dairy farm in New Brunswick and Its super cool to see the different routines, equipment on other dairy farms!! I love watching videos of other farms and seeing the difference between other farms! Dairy farming was my first job and I've been doing it for almost 3 years and absolutely love it! At the farm I work on we have a 32 stall rotary parlor and milk about 450 cows 3 times a day! Seeing your milking parlor and routine is awesome seeing the different equipment is amazing to watch. It's cool seeing how all dairy farms operate differently!🙂

Hey Jan! I wasn't taken by surprise this time you said, "we're drying them off". Wow! I'm learning so much. Love watching your videos. Haven't kept up with the affect of COVID-19 in Canada lately. Just wandering what its like to have a vacation???? Awesome the cows know lol....🚜 it amazes me how well all the equipment is taken care of...good job.
Hey DK how about showing us what you like to do on your time off and that's a nice looking truck you have and as always you are taking care of your girls so what's next for DK keep up the good work and see you in the next video 🤔🐄☺😉
I think you need a concrete wash rack where you wash your trucks and equipment, with a drainage system of course. Would be a whole lot less of a mud hole.
I can’t believe I’m still watching cow videos and I’m fascinated. Was wondering do the cows always do things at their own pace ? They always move so slowly and what does the neck rail actually do ?
When the cow stands up in her stall her neck touches the neck rail which causes her to move back a step or two, which in turn causes her manure to fall into the manure alley rather than on her bed.
Awesome vids man try and keep uploading as much as possible I know that it is hard sometimes when you get swamped with work around the farm I’m also a dairy farmer so I know that it is hard work and a lot of work
not sure if you do, but when I was your age we would milk our cows only once a day for a week prior to making them " go dry " . It really helped them dry up, a lot less problems too
You are an excellent example of personal initiative and professionalism. Have you ever thought about having summer training for young people interested in farming? It would be great if you passed along your knowledge to people who have no idea what farming entails. You would be doing the next generation a great favor. Think about it. Summer Training Program via on the job training and some reading re vaccines, environment, etc.
LUV your channel! Your filming is amazing and the editing that goes into your videos!!!! WOW! I am a small starting canadian creator and I just love watching your channel! so much inspo!
Great video, as always. I really wish that you would do a video on open pasture farming vs. keeping the cows inside all the time. I notice that you and 10th Generation Dairyman keep your cows inside while Tom Pemberton Farm Life allow his cows access to the pasture. Is it just a question about not having enough land to allow your cows to graze or them being easier to manage? You and 10th Generation Dairyman are the first dairy farmers that I have become familiar with besides my uncle. He didn't have a large barn and only brought them inside for milking. I would really like to get your take on the topic.
Teat & Meat-- that's all the worth of these animals. The highly commercial quick churn farming of today makes sunshine, open pastures an unneeded luxury for cows & cumbersome for humans in terms of space, time & labour
It’s just a management preference mostly and wether or not you got adequate number of acres to graze. I milk cows in a stanchion barn and they go out to pasture when not getting milked and if it’s raining they come in really muddy so there are times when it pays to keep them in
We used to milk 18 cows twice a day by hand. I was not that good but my mom was like a machine. This was before quotas. We were from Hilversum. Stay safe and healthy and warm.
All I can say kid is you have a lovey farm is your father still with you I think is the one that started this or maybe even your grandfather how old is this farm I love this shit lol get it shit lol
Hey. Still good work. Always small details but that takes time. A question how many slopes are there in the waiting area for cows for good water flow? Thanks for sharing. Greetings from Switzerland. François.
I like the way you refer to the currently milking cows as “ladies” and the heifers as “girls”. It shows respect for the product they are providing.

Yes I’m sure the cows really appreciate being called a lady and makes it ok to stick a knife in them with their permission. They love it.

Gosh your cows are so gentle in milking parlor they didn’t flinch when treating them for dry cow time.. job well done.
From Toronto, Canada: There seem to be a lot of time consuming tasks to do on the farm. You are a very considerate and compassionate animal owner.

I think he keeps the cows inside because the winters can be so hard that the grass in the pasture will die
It is also very difficult to collect te cows 2 for milking because that much cows need a lot of acres

6 1/2" stick or whatever work good when you have a lot to do.
I agree, neck rail placement is important! We've had to adjust ours a few times also
Yep just gotta fine tune it!
What is the purpose of the neck rail? Why even have one?
Aimee Swearengin That stops them from standing in the bed so its nice and clean I think
Simon Hallgren so they have to teach themselves how to lay down and put their necks under the bar so they can use more of the full space?
