I got mine in st helens driving back to blackpool 1979 Picked up the first bigs melons i drove past hit the brakes and rattled my potatoes on her dirt box. Great car Great memories or should i say Mamories
My father had an 1968 SL90, I remember helping him replace the head gasket, such a simple engine & so much room to work on it too! Looking forward to seeing it get washed, looks pretty good rust wise, almost tempted to put an offer in....
Love this. Reminds me of my Dad's HB Viva he had when I was little. DNK72F, black 2 door SL. The shots of the interior took me back to being a child, his had red seats and dash from memory. Happy days. 😊
My mum learned to drive in the previous model Viva (which was quite a bit smaller) in 1964. I used to sit in the back whilst she did her lessons. Then in the late 60s, early 70s, a Catholic priest we were friendly with, had the exact same HB Viva as this in the same colour and interior. This video brought back those great memories of childhood, thank you.
Brings back memories for me! I always walked to and back from school, but one day my dad was there waiting outside the school gates. Until this day he had a horrid Austin 1100 that I was ashamed of even back then. On this day, however he decided to meet me and surprise me with a racing car! He'd bought a 2 door Vauxhall Viva - bright red, black vinyl roof! It was awesome and we still talk about it today!
Love this! Reminds me of working on and servicing my 1964 VX 490 (and my 1960 Austin 850 Mini, my fiirst car). The Viva has such sweet lines! Would love to see this one restored to her full glory!
Here in Australia these were called a Holden HB Torona. My mate brought a 4 door one in pieces as his first car in the early 90's. I have fond memories of helping him get it on the road. Marc from Australia
My first car was a two door viva like this, late 70s early 80s. Good memories, loved tinkering with it. Wish i still had it, looking forward to the next video mate but would suggest getting a proper mike because i couldn't make out some of what you were saying. Great content, cheers.
HB Vivas were sold as Holden Toranas in Australia. Unlike Britain's HC, Australia did it's own update called the LC that was still an HB underneath some new panels. When you look under the bonnet of that HB you see HOW MUCH ROOM there is for bigger engines... The LC Torana of 1970 got the Vauxhall 1600 dropped into that big hole, and the sales slogan was "Little Big Wheel". And you got a 1256 as the standard mill.
My 72 HC was bought in 77. Has been unattended in the garage for 15 years but hope to get it back on the road one day. My view, for what it’s worth, is that the HC was the best viva, but the HB was the prettiest. That pale blue machine looks an absolute cracker.
My first vehicle was a Bedford HA van. My mate rolled his Dad's Viva HC so the engine out of that went into the van so i went from 40hp to 60hp!! Happy Days!
You can't kill Vauxhall vehicles back in the day old school vehicle need everything full detail clean inside the car air tires also she going to turn over friend the best mechanic in the field bless you keep bringing new videos
My first car was an HB Viva. Rust bucket but I loved it. Took the engine out and rebuilt it, the days when you could take an engine out with a tow rope and a scaffold pole. If my memory serves me well firing order was 1,3,4,2. Horrible rattling noise was from the tappets which I seem to be adjusting every couple of months. I think it was inlet valve 6 and exhaust was 10 on the feeler gauge. The good old days of motoring. What happened to the car in the finish and what happened to you after tasting vintage coolant lol. Thanks for sharing. Spiderige and cobweberige and all. Cheers.
I remember those starter solenoids, they had a soft rubber button on the top you could press to engage the starter while you were under the bonnet. Perfect for checking the fuel supply. Later ones had the button removed and a solid top on 'em. Really missed the ease of spinning the engine over.
I had one for my 1st car in 1983, same year and model, but this one looks to be in much better condition. Looks like original inner and outer wings judging by the original badges , plus they normally go by the hinges. Another rust area is the rear quarter but that looks fine, even the boot lid looks great. Looking at the plastic breather around the dipstick it must have the original 1159 engine in it, most of them were replaced with the HC Viva /chevette 1256. That car is very rare now in that original condition and worth thousands. I actually still work at the plant in Ellesmere port where this car was built. (Now the plant is in process of getting converted to build electric vans)
Nice one even the missus was impressed. i had one that was given to me back in 1983. usual faults but it ran for years even part exed it for a new car. Keep em coming and crack on
Great vid. I passed my test in a HB in 1975. My instructor previously had a HA which had a nicer clutch (less fierce). It was £2 a lesson £3.25 for the test. Great little car.
In 1975 I bought the same car in the same colour but the lower model, SL's were to aspire to! It was a 1968 1159cc and was my first car! I still dream about it! If you own MOV 637 F I will pay you a Kings ransom for it.
My first car was a HB Viva, I paid £150 & customised it with Escort bubble arches! I had a couple of HC`s & another HB (an MOT failure on rear turrets for £40!). Love em! I`ll give ya a grand for it as it stands!
I remember going to the car wreckers yard in NZ when i was young and one of these was dumped there. It was immaculate and obviously well taken care of. Now it was going to be broken up for parts. I just figured some old lady probably owned it and looked after it before her family dumped it in the scrap yard for parts after she shuffled off her mortal coil.
I had one of these back in the day. I believe mine was a 73 or 74 model. I really loved the car. Not terribly fast, but for a young man it was a fine car. I had many an adventure in mine, and I would love to have a restored classic.
Love the old vauxhall Vivas had a few back in the early 80s when I first started driving the ohv 1256 cc engine was easy to work on, the 1 you got running is in remarkable condition concidering it's over 50 years old. Great vid electronics in modern cars took the enjoyment out of tinkering under the bonnet,
Great memories of my very first car. VDA677G, I bought it as a non-runner for £40 back in 82/83. It had a leaking windscreen so got an amazing collection of fungi growing in the foot wells. I never got it on the road, but my dad did after he swapped it with me for a Viva HC. I think he sold it for £150 after he MOT'd it. Great video :)
My dad had the green estate version of this when I was a kid.SVF369G.He traded it in for the newer model than this one and then traded that in for a metallic blue one with the vinyl roof. After that he went onto Astras.x
I spotted the old red push button solenoid, would've saved you a lot of back & forth to the key buddy, love how this old girl looks, & the superlites are a cool touch 🥰🥰
I had a couple of these in the early ‘70s an HA and HC estate. I would strip and rebuild it on a weekend. I lived in Luton, which at that time was the home of Vauxhall and my next door neighbour worked there. The first time I stripped he engine down I asked him if he would help me lift it out. He said no in case he hurt his back, so I lifted it out on my own. In those days there was enough room in the engine bay for me to get in there and do a straight lift onto a board that I placed across the wings and the engine was light enough for me to do it single handed. I drove Vauxhalls from then until they moved their operation to Spain. Nissans are British built so that is my car of choice now.
Happy memories of the early 1970,s when my dad had one of these as his company car. it was a darker blue SL90. it was a G reg and got replaced in 1973 by a HC viva estate.Mreg. wish I could remember the registration numbers, one of them may've survived. Back in 1988, my brand new car got stolen. I bought a cheap Viva HB 1970 H reg for £60 to tide me over until the insurance was settled. I instantly fell in love with it on my long drive to london each day for work. it even had an 8track player and loads of cool tapes from the 60,s and 70,s. I only sold it because I later needed a 4 door car, so bought a cool Vauxhall Magnum 2300.
I live in Manitoba Canada..and back in 1975 my first car i got was a Vauxhall Viva car to drive...think it was a 68??..Standard shift model.... it got totaled in an accident ( lady turned in front of me ).. then i got an automatic one.. it blew up - engine ( friend was using it ) ... really enjoyed the First one...cheap on gas and fun to use....the Auto one was ok but slower and less fun ..but still so cheap on fuel...lol
The inner wings are great, they used to rot, i worked on Viva's in the late 70's, they would not run well on Champion plugs but as soon as you put AC ones in they ran perfect
Yes, AC plugs are a must, I think they take a 42XLS , the equivalent of an N9Y. In fact Vauxhall electrics are critical. You can get away with CI points but ideally you need AC throughout. Those the tappet clearances set correctly that engine will idle silently, all you hear is the balance weights in the distributor.
@@foxstrangler i seem to remember tappets 8thou engine running, friends dads feeler gauges always had a mangled n bent 8 thou, messy job tho oil splatter
Wow here in Australia we had these but they were called the HB Torana .Before they worked the front and rear to put the six in it . Never realized they were so close .Ours had a different grill and headlights plus there was 2 different types of carby's. Great little car around town but out on the open road always felt like it needed another gear. And don't over rev them that engine had a habit of the valves separating and the head of the valve falling down to jam pistons . A mate of mine had one but it kept breaking down under revs so I rebuilt the carby and got it to rev .So whats he do take it out the road and it went bang. 6 Grand seemed to be a bit of a limit for these .
My first car in 1976, WGO 828G, a 1969 SL peacock blue example with the 1600 OHC engine with a sunroof. Such a lovely car, though lamentably unreliable and already rusting badly under the wings. I learned to drive on the bad bendy roads on holiday in Ardnamurchan in Scotland ('if you can drive here, you can drive anywhere') during the hottest Summer of the century and passed my test in it back in London.
These were called the Holden Torana in AUSTRALIA keeping the H B prefix. It did not take long for us to drop in a 202 c i red motor . I have been in a few of them doing 120 mph . Look up GTRXU1 .
We had a viva like that (tho the sl90 --- had a CD Stromberg instead of Solex carb) even the same colour. amazed at how this one survived so well as Vauxhalls of this period (we had a viva hc & a victor as well) as seemed to die of terminal rusting usuall round the front end, will subscribe to see the follow up video.
Brilliant. What a fab find. My Dad had one of these but I was too young to remember. I do remember the K reg HC he got in 1972. First observation was aren't those glass headlights lovely and clear. I'm going to be polishing the plastic headlights on my mums 2008 fiesta later with 40k miles on - these look like they've been in a barn.
I always laugh when I hear Ford enthusiasts saying the mk3 cortical was the 1st coke bottle styling......I love their reaction when you tell them to have a look at the HB viva.......beating Ford by about 7/8 years lol
Same engine more or less as in my mrs Vauxhall Nova. Good engines they are quite peppy for what they are. The one in the nova regularly takes a good amount of stick.
Nice find. A great looking example. Always liked the 70s Viva. But. The track Marshall more interesting to me. The viva will be easier to get started though.
HB was a nice little car, with very good handling, The 2-litre was even better. For some reason, the small motor was very sensitive to spark-plug brand. Champions just didn't work, while ACs were fine, if memory serves me correctly.
my very first car was a 69 Vauxhall Viva, red, black interior. we (brothers and cousins) V8 swapped it with a 327 from a 68 Chevelle wagon in 1981, what a lil beast! GM imported the to Canada where I live for a few years, super rare here now...and left hand drive as well...
My 17 year old experience came back to me as soon as he sat in the seat and started driving forward.Same car that my driving instructor came around for my first lesson
The coil should have a ballast resistor on one terminal. 12v feed in and coil runs at 9v when engine is running but starts on 12v to give it an extra boost. Technology from the 60s
Sorting out the mechanical issues is relatively simple, but the suspension mountings on the body will be dangerously corroded and prohibitively expensive to repair. The rust will be spreading everywhere on the car.
Love this car. My idea!🤔 Drop the suspension. Another mechanics (engine, suspension, brakes, etc) Bumpers, no more! Phantom black Grill. And that's it!! Love the colour/patina!! 😎😉👍
You cannot beat an old vauxhall. I love them.
Love the old vauxhall viva nice wheels on that one 👍
You can with the right stick. Ask Basil Fawlty.
I got mine in st helens driving back to blackpool 1979 Picked up the first bigs melons i drove past hit the brakes and rattled my potatoes on her dirt box. Great car Great memories or should i say Mamories
@robsmithracing yes very escort style the vauxhall had great squirm at speed on the suspension. just keep that wheel straight
Not usually a fan of many old Vauxhalls but I love that Viva!!!! The shape, wheels, it all works what a cool little car.
That was a miracle find. The joke about buying a new viva was drive it home quick before it rots away, Vauxhalls were renowned rot boxes
My father had an 1968 SL90, I remember helping him replace the head gasket, such a simple engine & so much room to work on it too!
Looking forward to seeing it get washed, looks pretty good rust wise, almost tempted to put an offer in....
My first car was a viva HB 1600 AOO646G in the late seventies brings a smile to my face so many memories
This is a nice original car. HB Vivas are now very sought after. This one needs saving.
Love this. Reminds me of my Dad's HB Viva he had when I was little. DNK72F, black 2 door SL. The shots of the interior took me back to being a child, his had red seats and dash from memory. Happy days. 😊
Great vid, i have a 1970 HC i am slowly getting back on the road, i have shared to some Viva groups for you.
Lovely old HB. I love the "coke bottle" shape long before the Cortina Mk III.
Good luck with that one, matey.
They were difficult enough to start even when brand new.
Lovely job - and the old Viva's sitting on Condor Cigar wheels - remember the old 70's tv Ad?
My mum learned to drive in the previous model Viva (which was quite a bit smaller) in 1964. I used to sit in the back whilst she did her lessons. Enjoy watching the barn finds. Hope you keep finding them. Remember a neighbour who had a viva who used gaffer tape to cover hole's in the wing. 😄
Excellent, proper barn find. these Viva's look so much better than I remember back in the day.
Love this! Reminds me of working on and servicing my 1964 VX 490 (and my 1960 Austin 850 Mini, my fiirst car). The Viva has such sweet lines! Would love to see this one restored to her full glory!
Seeing wheels like that reminds me of the Panama cigar "Carlos Fandango" advert. Lovely noise Vivas make.
I remember that advert. Think it was a Ford Anglia.

My dad had a red viva, with a yellow stripe down the side. Loved it.
As a young lad I had the model before this, the HA Viva.
I paid £60 for it, It was great for a year but rusted away when I wasn't looking.
The Barry White of the West Country "will it start" videos! 😄😉 Another great video 👍 looking forward to the next installment. Cheers 🍻
I had a Saxon blue 1967 model my first car loved it great wee runner ...
This was also my first car ...a 1969 laurel green 4 door sl. I was so impressed I worked for vauxhall ( parts dept) for 44years !

I had a Vauxhall viva L reg: 1800cc 2 door, white with a black vinyl roof, i loved it and it was fairly powerful

Definitely a nice cool detailed wash for all that moldy moss, dirt, grimes.. i agree for a part 2..

An SL !!! BRILLIANT ( had a deluxe) 🙂 , great work getting it started, well worth restoring, they are so scarce.
I had one for my 1st car in 1983, same year and model, but this one looks to be in much better condition. i had one too in 1983....vinyl roof and red in colour....the sewing machine type accelerator was loose and floated arounfd a bit!!.....great memories

Great vid. I passed my test in a HB in 1975. My instructor previously had a HA which had a nicer clutch (less fierce). It was £2 a lesson £3.25 for the test. Great little car.
My late grandparents had two Vauxhalls in the early 1970s, gran had a HB Viva and grandad had a FD Victor.
Great video, good old fashioned mechanics, look forward to the next video 👍
Thought this was vice grip garage for a minute then ha ha Nice viva
My first car when I passed my test in 1981 was a green HA Viva FHW 531D. Cost me £85.
Love to drive one of those cars again. Classic ..
Great video keep them coming enjoyed watching
pretty rough looking on the exterior for a car thats only sat for 4 years!
Love the content
I remember going to the car wreckers yard in NZ when i was young and one of these was dumped there. It was immaculate and obviously well taken care of. Now it was going to be broken up for parts. Well that takes me back to my teens. My boyfriend at the time put one together from a kit his dad bought for him. It was a great little car.
Great find. Engine sounds well and hardly any smoke from the exhaust.
looks like some one as watched a lot of vice grip garage lol love the videos
My dad had the green estate version of this when I was a kid.SVF369G.He traded it in for the newer model than this one and then traded that in for a metallic blue one with the vinyl roof. After that he went onto Astras.x

My 17 year old experience came back to me as soon as he sat in the seat and started driving forward.Same car that my driving instructor came around for my first lesson
My dad taught me to drive in his. Same colour as well. Nostalgia!
H reg HB Viva, I had one as my first car! Great to see that it still runs.
The coil should have a ballast resistor on one terminal. 12v feed in and coil runs at 9v when engine is running but starts on 12v to give it an extra boost. Technology from the 60s
Great car would be brill to see this fully restored what a find 👌
Enjoying the Channel, John, Norfolk.
Brilliant handling.
Get a manifold for 40dcoe, change cam and exhaust.... perfect!
Nice!. Dad had a metalic green two door back in the day!. 🙂
My Dad had a red HB a year older. Cool little car.
Sorting out the mechanical issues is relatively simple, but the suspension mountings on the body will be dangerously corroded and prohibitively expensive to repair. The rust will be spreading everywhere on the car.
This brought back some great memories, my first car a 1966 1159cc Red 2door Vauxhall Viva . You hold a party in the engine bay with all that space.
My first car when I passed my test me dad gave me his I loved it
The way to improve a Vauxhall is to put all Honda engine and running gear on it
Great video! That’s a cool looking little car! Thanks for sharing!
I'd love to see the Viva all cleaned and road ready ❤️
Love this car. My idea!🤔
Drop the suspension. Another mechanics (engine, suspension, brakes, etc) Bumpers, no more! Phantom black Grill. And that's it!! Love the colour/patina!! 😎😉👍
