I love this channel for many reasons. One of them is the diversity of the people who have joined this family. The sharing of music has always been a great unifier. Like everything else though, one must open their mind and their ears to get the full benefit. That happens here. 😃

The story goes that when Sam Cooke played this song to Bobby Womack, Womack began to cry, as he felt it was so ominous. It was Sam Cooke's final song but they didn't know it. It's such a moving and important song, and it's lovely to see you being moved as well, I get chills every time I hear it. It transcends music.

Born in 1931 Mississippi, he knew the pain of growing up black in the South. His early pop songs like "Cupid", "Another Saturday Night" and "Wonderful World" crossed the color barrier and made him loved by all. His tragic death at 33 robbed us of what was more to come.

I'm a 50-year old white guy that's not ashamed to admit I teared up a few times watching 'One Night in Miami', and then straight up cried during Leslie Odon Jr.'s scene where he portrays Sam Cooke performing this for the first time. I teared up again with Amber tonight, too. We need so much more change in this world, and it can't come soon enough. ♥
Sam Cooke wrote this song and was first to release it. It has been sung by EVERYBODY who cares about the need for social change in our country! In 2021, Rolling Stone Magazine ranked it as the #3 GREATEST song of all times!!! Brilliant!!!
You struck gold when you discovered Sam Cooke. He was truly one of a kind and from being a gospel singer who was so handsome that he drew the attention of young women like
Aretha Franklin and Patti Labelle, to being a solo artist who had most all of his hits covered by other people in later years, to being a successful businessman who started his own record label and and was all about helping his race in the 60s. His unexpected and tragic death by gunshot stopped the continued trajectory of this amazing man who had had so much ahead of him.

He was a major influence on Smokey Robinson. He wrote "You Really Got A Hold On Me" after being inspired by "Bring It All Home To Me". Michael Jackson at last report's Estate owned his Music Catalogue. He got his Start in A Gospel Group called The Soul Stirrers and he also wrote "You Send Me". He also did "His" Version of Little Red Rooster an obscure Blues Song that was also done by The Rolling Stones on Ready Steady Go in the 1960's, and Billy Preston & Ray Charles (RIP), played the Piano & Organ. Billy worked with The Beatles on Get Back, and he also toured with The Stones.

This song, and Billie Holiday’s, “Strange Fruit” are so powerful and never fail to bring me to tears as well. I am a high school English teacher, and you are right Amber-by the time kids hit puberty they have found a way to divide themselves in every possible way. As teachers, we nevertheless, fight that battle every day to help bring kids back to the rediscovery of their shared humanity. You guys are my people. I treasure you and the goodness and hope you exude.

No matter how often I listen to this song I always have to cry. For me, Sam Cooke is the greatest singer of all time. His voice always touches my soul.
Sam's pain is felt in his tone, you can feel his every breath. Sam's love for his listener, is felt in his words delivered at the same time. That is God given genius. That is what makes it timeless. Thank you for reminding of it!

That is true. But there are a few wonderful versions out there. I highly recommend Leela James' version but a lot of great singers did it good justice like Otis Redding, Aretha Franklyn and Al Green with Bucker T. I'm currently listening a fantastic version by Ledisi that's surprisingly good.

The GREAT Sam Cooke!!! Never apologize for real tears, you are human. Miss Amber, you touched on something about children, a truth from my own experience. Many years ago, I took my eldest grandson to the park to play. Kaden's father is from Sudan. There was a little white boy by himself, and Kaden is a very friendly person. The boy saw Kaden and asked him "Why is your skin so dark?" Kaden said, "I don't know." the boy then asked, "Does it hurt?" Kaden said, "No." The boy then said, " Good. You wanna play with me?" And off they went. People have to be taught to love, and sadly they are also taught to hate. 60-year-old white guy here, loving your channel, loving your reactions, loving you for who you are. People loving music and wanting to share your love for music. As for how far we as people have to go, remember this: "The longest journey begins with one step." Are we taking that step here, maybe. I think so.

Sam Cooke was an absolute LEGEND. He was 33 when he got shot. He had over 30 hits, each one more perfect than the last. I'm not gonna go into how/why he died, as there is a lot of controversy over the details. Read about it, and make your own mind up. This is a DEEP rabbit hole that I HOPE you dive into! Sam was behind some of the best R&B songs ever made. For next, check out "You Send Me", "I'll Come Running Back to You", "Chain Gang", "Twistin' the Night Away" (my personal fave), and "Shake" (which was the A-side to "A Change Is Gonna Come". Such a tragedy that he died so young, shot to death at the age of 33. I seem to remember that his homicide was never resolved.

I said in my comment of this song people strongly to this day say the L.A. police had something to do with it, him being so rich & "UPPITY!" I'm 68 and heard him on the radio when I was 7 or so .Listened to him on "THE X!" Late at night,when Wolfman Jack was on .At the time I lived in Ft.Worth & we had a little thing in this area called "JIM CROWE". Basically it was Illegal for black people to do anything in public and that includes eating in restaurants ( unless they were "CLORED ONLY!"), driving, or drinking out of white only water fountains or using public bathrooms.At 5 yrs. I attempted to drink from a colored only fountain & I was yelled at by a Ft.Worh cop! Nice huh? A 5 YEAR OLD BOY! This mook obviously didn't know my mom ,she got in his grill & basically told him to step off! All day after that allI did was ask her why? She finally broke down & said it was against the law & she could go to jail if she let me drink from it. Nice,huh? I DIDN'T GET IT THEN &I SURE AS HELL STILL DON'T GET IT NOW!

Thankyou Patric, I was so sad to hear about how he died and how young he was but, we’re keeping his memory alive by still playing his wonderful songs to this day. ALTHOUGH i like your channel, I wonder how you have so much free time as teachers. My mother in law was a teacher and all her time was spent grading papers, preparing class lessons, teacher meetings, parent meetings, school plays, special events at school, Administration meetings, finals, graduation. She had almost no free time but it was a different world then.

Amber, as Jordan mentioned, this song brings a lot of people to tears. I love the Sam Cooke material that I hope you get more into but he heard Bob Dylan's "Blowing in the Wind" and it was inspired to write a "change" song.

I was in college when this song came out. Many artists were using their platform to bring light to these causes. Now, 60 years later, we face some of the same issues. The good thing is that we can talk, learn and understand other people. You are part of that journey.
It's especially hard to not get teary eyed seeing how many strides were made since the mid 1960s, and how so much of that has come undone. And Sam Cooke is dearly missed.
This is so true. The difference between hope and reality. We have watched this country battle between right and wrong and hate and love for all not just the few. This song embodies the hope and now we see the history. We need to make changes. Sam Cooke is an icon. He started his own record label, and had to battle racism and prejudice. He grew up in the segregated south and was moved to Chicago with his family. He is by far my favorite singer. He tears my soul to shreds when he sings song. The other singer is Elvis singing If I Can Dream about MLK's dream and assassination two months prior.
No it hasn't come undone. There are just propagandizing people that want to make you believe that it has come undone. And that hurts the soul and spirit of the nation and it hurts everyone individually in their own way.

Absolutely, all the great performers have deep catalogs of music, that no matter when they were created and sung They live on through the ages and ages! This was in the 60s and it’s so powerful, relevant and resilient
Cooke wrote this as a protest song to support the civil rights movement, as Black Americans fought for equality. Up to this point, most of his songs were either touching ballads ("You Send Me") or lighthearted uptemo tunes ("Twistin' The Night Away"). When Cooke heard Bob Dylan's "Blowin' In The Wind," he became determined to write something similar - he couldn't believe Dylan's song wasn't written by a black man.

It amazes me how you both grown through your journey and that you must never stop worrying especially with all music I've always said that if it's good music of rain music it doesn't no matter where it comes from and the fact that you do tackle songs like Sam Cooke's a change is going to come means that you will tackle the hard subjects. And as Rogers and you have to be taught there you go thanks finally I know I don't know you personally but it is wonderful Hammerstein two great musical theater people wrote in South Pacific a musical one of the songs in that show is you have to be taught to hate and I think if you find that song by Rogers and Hammer side you should play that and listen to it. Finally I really believe you're doing a wonderful job of raising your children we need to learn how to love each other more and hate that keep up the good work Jordan and Amber. I just want to tell you that I love you for being who you are and we need more young people like you because I this world in the right direction. I am a white man (77) YO. I grew up listening to Sam Cooke and was devastated the day I heard he had died. Sam was decades ahead of his time in his music, his ability to control his own music, and his ability to rip your heart out with his lyrics and music.
The first album I ever gave my daughter was a collection of Sam Cooke's greatest hits, and she still thanks me to this day for this introduction to others' insight and pain.
Guys your reaction jumped off the screen was so genuine and spoke volumes. I'm not sure if it was you or this beautiful song that had me in tears, but rest assured I was in tears. I'm a huge Sam Cooke fan and can give you a little background on this particular song. Sam Cooke was a huge star when this song was recorded just prior to his death. He came from a pure gospel background and crossed over into the pop field in the late fifties, and started charting hit after hit. He was also a very intelligent man who was very observant of both his times and the human condition in general. Obviously, these were the times when the whole civil rights movement was starting to get national attention, especially when John Kennedy and Martin Luther King became intertwined in their vision of what a better America should look like. Sam had heard one of the very first 'protest songs' to become a major hit record, a song called 'Blowin' In The Wind' by Bob Dylan. He was immediately blown away and suddenly felt a slight shame in finding out that a young white dude was singing about these issues, while he himself hadn't figured out a way to do that yet. He was quoted as saying that he felt that was a song he should have written. "A Change Is Gonna Come' was written by Sam shortly after ... and went on to become an anthem for the whole civil rights movement for decades to come, and in fact, right to this very day.

Seeing Amber tear up made me tear up. Sam Cooke was my era... his world was so much different than mine and it saddens me to think we failed time after time to make it better for all of us. I first saw the world Cooke sang about during my trip to Birmingham in 1964. I was 11 and what I saw will live within me if I live to be 100.
One of the best cover's of this song was by an 80's artist named Terrence Trent D'Arby who many at that time said was a cross between Prince and Michael Jackson. He was a phenomenal talent from Great Britain.
I. absolutely agree. I came across it not long ago on UA-cam never knowing he recorded it. I think it's his best vocal and that's saying a lot since Terence can sing the phone book. At some point they need to be introduced to this man. Btw, he gained his first success in England but was born in the U.S.

Before I go into my comments on the song I have to give mad props to Jay for his comments about how the music brings ALL of us together and it doesn't matter who we are, where we're from etc etc. Music can bring us all together.
Anyways...Sam Cooke was brought up in the church and was one of the first to really cross over from Gospel to secular music. IMO this song is one of the greatest songs ever sung. BTW Jay, I know you said it's not the song you're thinking of but if you've seen the movie Malcolm X this song was played in the film.
I also need to touch upon Amber's comments about how children just LOVE each other. It's so true, their innocence and sweetness shines through in a huge way. In an under the radar great Marvin Gaye tune he once sang "If we were all children, the world would be a better place". If you're interested that song is called "Piece of Clay"
Back to Cooke for a second, he was extremely versatile and there's a lot of great songs of his that I love. My father used to play a ton of his music while I was growing up. "Chain Gang" is one of my favorites of his.

@@samolevski1119 You can't leave the politics out of it. Music and politics have been intertwined for decades. From this song to songs about Vietnam to Lennon singing for peace to fundraising music songs/ concerts of the 80s, right on through to today. Music can be a catalyst for change.
This song has such a historical importance, from its very creation on to how Obama used the song and the iconic portrait artwork in the "Yes we can" campaign. It also has a deep personal meaning.

Yes, I cried with you. Such a beautiful song. I am 80 yrs old. Years ago, I heard that many gifted and famous singers, Elvis Pressley and others, worked diligently to master Sam Cooke's singing technique of using "English" (a Billiard/pool term meaning when one puts a spin on their cue ball) on the last word in the lines of his songs. None could ever accomplish this singing ability to the equal of Sam Cooke, but they appreciated his genius and incorporated some of it in their own songs. I loved every song he released and couldn't wait for the next one. Sadly, he passed away as a very young man, but left a legacy of beauty to the music world for all to enjoy.

Sam Cooke's contributions to the Civil Rights struggle is legendary, and "A Change is Gonna Come" is an American treasure. I cannot hear it without tearing up, and as I watched Amber cry as she listened to it, I began to cry also. However, he sang some feel-good, fun songs, too. "Another Saturday Night" comes to mind. Sam Cooke is the most influential voice ever. All the great soul singers were influence by this man. His gospel music to his r&b hits and to think he died at 33. The greatest singer ever.
I look at Amber’s face and become frustrated with why we are still struggling with racism 50 + years later. But I’m still in the fight for a better world for all of us.

When I was a teenager I thought we could change the world. Now in my 60s and I feel like we failed, not much has changed at all.

Example: I’m a COO of a large nationwide company, in my mother’s generation you were likely a housewife, school teacher, secretary or nurse. I’ve benefitted from that change and know firsthand we just need to keep pushing for a fairer world that values equality for ALL. I’m hopeful but do feel (like you) frustrated it’s slow going. Jordan and Amber’s children will elevate it a bit further, and on and on. Love is the way…oh and GREAT 🎶 😊 which my generation definitely brings to the table!! 🙌

In the fall of 1963, Cooke faced a direct affront: He and his band were turned away from a Holiday Inn in Shreveport, La.
"He just went off," Guralnick says. "And when he refused to leave, he became obstreperous to the point where his wife, Barbara, said, 'Sam, we'd better get out of here. They're going to kill you.' And he says, 'They're not gonna kill me; I'm Sam Cooke.' To which his wife said, 'No, to them you're just another ...' you know."
Cooke was arrested and jailed, along with several of his company, for disturbing the peace. Guralnick says "A Change Is Gonna Come" was written within a month or two after that.
"It was less work than any song he'd ever written," Guralnick says. "It almost scared him that the song - it was almost as if the song were intended for somebody else. He grabbed it out of the air and it came to him whole, despite the fact that in many ways it's probably the most complex song that he wrote. It was both singular - in the sense that you started out, 'I was born by the river' - but it also told the story both of a generation and of a people."

As an old white woman I've grown to love a variety of music, but the music of the sixties is special to me. The fights for civil rights and women's rights, the protest songs against the Viet Nam War, and the beginning of environmental awareness (the first Earth Day) all inspired such great music.
I too cried, we forget how people struggled and are still struggling just to be safe from prejudice. Thank you for reminding me of this wonderful piece of singing....pure poetry.

If you’re as old as you say then you KNOW change did come. There aren’t segregated schools, or separate drinking fountains, and nobody has to ride in the back of the bus or use the rear entrance. So the country isn’t racist, but you can’t legislate away hatred. There will always be bigots because small people need a way to feel big and important. And unfortunately we now have people being judged not by the content if their character but by the color of their skin and what their white ancestors did. That’s just as bad.

I still tear up when I hear it...Music connects so many bridges!! We were distracted from the struggles by so many wrongs, this song is a reminder and still sends a little light.... When he sings, " It's been too hard living, but Im afraid to DIE.."....that line just rips at your heart...your soul....smh... Im a 26 year war veteran. I've seen so much. Too afraid to ask for help at one point of my life because of my ignorance and the stigma's that come with seeking help in my community and as a man. I finally went to someone, and it felt like the weight of the world was lifted off my shoulders. That's why that line really resonates with me. You guys have a great channel, keep being that ray of light that some need.

I finally moved to a better area as I climbed out of the mess and saw 100 times more racism towards whites which seem to be completely ignored. Look at the stats. Live in the bad areas and you will see it. Going back to blaming whitey is simply avoiding the actual problem. If you truly care and really look at the evidence that supports this then it will at least help the cause. Fathers need to be in the home, Welfare needs to be almost eliminated. Rewards for hard work and progress not mistakes and crimes. By telling them they are systematically failing because of there race and telling whites its there fault some twisted way is literally systematically telling them they cant succeed and you should be ashamed to parrott that nonsense. I could see and feel your emotions, Amber. I grew up during this period. I had a bowl of popcorn smashed into my face with a beer mug pressed to my head because I brought a black friend to a bar in the late 60’s and survived. I’m white and it hurt me to the core, my friends ran the guys out. Music is the bridge for us all. We can make it.
There is a an interview on UA-cam with Bobby Womack and talking about his life and then also talking about the great Sam Cooke. What he did for him and so many others. Sam Cooke, God rest his soul was a pioneer in music. I always shed tears when I hear this song sung by the great Sam Cooke!! The meaning and the understanding that he was going through this, is some thing that it’s very deep even today

Idk who watched his documentary but there was this footage of him singing this to a crowd and my God I’ve never ever felt anything like it. Mind you I’m really young, not even 25 yet but it just went right through my heart. I never found the full thing, it was just a 3 sec snippet at the beginning of the doc and I always think if it made me feel that way through a screen and with a few secs only I can only imagine what those in the audience must’ve felt. Such an amazing, gritty, beautiful, soulful voice. I immediately went and listened to anything from him that I could get my hands on and needless to say it was a night very rich in emotions and weed
