G'day Ryan, l have served in the Australian Army with two tours in a War zone, and l have learnt the the first casualty in War is the truth and the second is humanity, and all players on the ground are impacted for the rest of their lives, the truth must be published at any cost, cheers mate.
thank you Digger
Thank you. ❤
Beautifully said. Thank you for your service to Australia, truth and humanity. Your sacrifice is appreciated by far more people than you will ever know.
Yip
Onya mate. Cheers.
Absolute disgrace that he was kept hostage. Welcome home Julian you are a brave man.
Truth. V Media 🥱💩
Agreed
A non-US citizen on non-US soil and the US government has the arrogance to demand THEIR law be honoured. Disgusting that other countries were intimidated! I see him as an Aussie hero for standing up to them 🇦🇺🇦🇺🇦🇺
Hear hear 👏👏👏 the arrogance of America is world renowned.
Yes!! And to think someone like Trump and his cronies are still walking around free... He should have been out years ago, if in at all!! I wish him and his family all the very best. Welcome home Julian. ❤
Not just a non-US citizen, a journalist by every measure of the word.
The US used it's power and leverage across the world to try to punish him for doing journalism.
So the American Evil Empire responds to evidence of them doing Evil Empire stuff by ... doing more Evil Empire stuff.
Yes. And to think that Biden, both of the Clintons, Pelosi, Fauci, and all of their cronies are still walking around free.
What has this got to do with Trump?
I think the vast majority of Australians were supportive of him and very against the way he was treated by the US government. It is such a shame it took so long to bring him home.
We have weak ass government our country need to do better. They let this man suffer all these years for doing his job.
Maybe more like Australians were against the treatment as i think the US pursued it too long and do the US really have the right to chase down citizens of other countries as is their wont to do,?I wouldn't agree Australians are necessarily supportive of the action (by him) that brought this whole thing about. Personally i think he brought this all on himself. Like be careful if you poke the bear! Personally i think he is a "bit up himself" and i don't like him or his actions.
Nope
I'm sure majority of Australia forgot who he is, if we even heard about him. Sorry to even ruin the moment. I think I did hear about him ages ago, tho.
Nope!
He told the world the truth and was made to pay the price, so happy he is finally free.
He was/is also a bit of a d!%&...the persecution was over the top but he should have expected a reaction...
Lots of happy tears when he landed on Aussie soil. He didn’t take the information, he was given it and he made it public abiding by the 1st Amendment. We want to see Julian Pardoned because we have a right to know the truth ❤
I made a Facebook group like 15 years ago called “pardon Jullian Assange!” (lol). I hope he and Snowden are pardoned.
@@ryanreaction That's great. Although in the case of Chelsea Manning, former President Obama pardoned her years ago.
@@ryanreactionI did not know that Ryan. Good on you.
I doubt if brave Edward Snowden will ever be able to go home, let alone be pardoned.
But that’s a story for another day.
The Australian ABC reported today how a posse of Australian politicians from EVERY political party went to Washington last October to lobby for his freedom. Completely amazed the US officials that there was broad support for Assange in Australia. He broke no Australian law as well, which means this whole situation is very messy. He’s done his time, regardless.
@@optimusmaximus9646 Yes, but he's not a US citizen. That's the point.
@@carokat1111he isn’t an American citizen but he is a journalist first and foremost. America doesn’t like being embarrassed.
If you believe he was released by diplomacy you may be misled. The main reason he was released is because America now has two journalists imprisoned in Russia in exactly the same situation as Assange. When america called it a show trial, russia came out and pointed to Julien Assange and called "hypocrites"
ABC is a Leftist also ran.
@@GarryMercer-tq5uo I don't believe he was released by diplomacy. I was just making the point that there was wide non-partisan support in Australia for him to be released.
It's high time that America understood that although Australia is a great ally that we as a country will never bow to the will of any foreign land ❤
An Australian citizen, not on US soil when the "crime" was committed having to plead guilty to a US law of espionage. Can anyone tell me how that makes sense?
No Australian should ever be muzzled of free speech ,that's our backbone or used to be
He wasn't speaking in Australia or putting Australians in danger. There are limits to 'free speech' in every country.
@@Bellas1717 it's a shit ,ay
@@Bellas1717 As there are limit to being a US Ally. Our Agreements were meant to allow each other citizens fair and Due process. You gave him none.
@@candycanessongs I'm an Aussie. I don't agree with his treatment at all, but I also don't agree with the extent of his actions.
My point is that he was negligently lazy by indiscriminately dumping 70,000 documents. No care taken to sort those docs and hold back those where they endangered and even cost the lives of people just serving their countries. There is a moral limit on both sides to what is publsihed and what is held back.
@@Bellas1717 Some truth here too. Back in the days of the Atomic weapons tests at Maralinga, there was a D notice issued to persuade to prevent information being published, when a Brit was too open with what was happening. A bar in Adelaide?
“Issue and observance of D Notices. Membership of the Defence, Press and Broadcasting Committee comprises representatives of the print and broadcasting media and the government. It is chaired by the Minister for Defence, whose department is responsible for administrative support to the Committee. When the Committee last met, in 1982, it comprised 16 media representatives and four Defence representatives. This committee issues D Notices to the media.” Oz Government online.
“The system is voluntary and non-observance of a request contained in a D Notice carries no penalties. In the end, it is for an editor to decide whether to publish an item of information, having regard to national security requirements.” Oz Government online.
Opinions about Julian Assange certainly cover a wide spectrum, but what cannot be ignored is that he is an Australian who was persecuted by the security establishment of the USA and UK, in contravention of Australian law and public opinion. Australian *Labor* politicians and diplomats worked very hard to achieve his release. Such efforts were promised during the latest federal election, and may have added some weight to the overwhelming Labor landslide victory.
The AUKUS security arrangement continues to confirm a close military alliance between the 3 nations. Even so, despite exceptionally close historical ties, many Australians are more or less opposed to Australia being a puppet state to the USA, or subject to ongoing influence by the UK. We have our own place in the world, and many of us genuinely strive to be superior global citizens. By exposing war crimes perpetrated by our allies, Julian Assange represents part of that desire to make the world better, without compromising our moral and ethical sovereignty.
100% #truth
landslide victory? not sure how you get that from the lowest primary vote numbers for 100yrs.
Fabulous comment @AussieGreyWolf
Well said and extremely accurate!
Im not sure how you can say its without compromising our moral and ethical sovereignty. He publicly released names, addresses and phone numbers of child rape victims.
@@Hudpower Are you reporting a personal breach of privacy that has affected you or people known to you, or are you just parroting a conspiracy talking point?
One of the reasons that Assange didn't believe he would get a fair trial in the USA was that the US Government had rejected his defence of freedom of speech, stating that the First Amendment only applied to US citizens. So according to the USA, Americans can say whatever they like, but no one else can criticise America.
As an Aussie all I can say is welcome home Skip.
Welcome home cobber!
Massive overreach of US law. He was not a US citizen. He published information. As did many others. A major failing of British law, and prior Australian government diplomacy. Current Australian government has been cleaning up the diplomatic mess of the prior government. Assange is a victim of these circumstances. He may be an arsehole, but he did not deserve this treatment.
why is he an arsehole?
His only crime was exposing war crimes. Sometimes rules have to be broken for the greater good of humanity. He went by what he felt was principally right. Bad luck for all the people who died as a result.
Yes, the British legal system has behaved disgracefully. He committed no offence against Britain, and no offence against valid American law - he was neither a US citizen, nor was he in the US when the contentious actions took place.
"No Doubt", he is an arsehole, and he dines out on it
@@gregsmith4102 you can still violate US law (especially via the internet or networks) whether or not you're a US citizen and even while not being in the country.

Julian did not know his biological father until he was 25. He spent the first half of his childhood with an actor who had the surname that he took on . I worked with that person in his last 14 years. Not a nice man.
Chelsea Manning has been a free person for a very long time, a totally disproportionate focus on Assange.
Not to mention he was the traitor who stole the information then got a sex change paid for by the American taxpayer in exchange for him not talking until the trial. Assange believes he was protected by the constitution when releasing evidence of war crimes as it is a higher law than the espionage act, and is right in believing the laws are in conflict.
Bradley Manning was pardoned by Obama I wonder why
curious
Got to do everything in their power to control journalists . Cant have rouge people telling the truth instead of the " official " line.
Assange jailed himself in the Embassy all by himself, for years.
US were wise to let it go with time served.
I think it was a fair outcome in the end.
I think if he had any penance to pay, he’s paid it. He pled guilty so that he could appease the US government and move on with his life. I think the Australian government is gutless for not helping him sooner.

Mike Pence also covers himself in excreta with his claims that Assange ' endangered American lives'. Did not provide a single example.
10 percent of Assange's life sacrificed on the altar of refusing to acknowledge American war crimes! Justice? And the British were complicit.

As the Aussie PM said "it doesn't matter what you think about what Julian has done, the situation had just gone on for too long and he needed to be brought back to Australia." It was 14 years of either being in the Ecuadorian Embassy and the Bellmarsh Prison which is one of their maximum security prisons.
As Julian's lawyer, Jennifer Robinson, said: "he was just doing his job as a journalist". She was the lady with him coming off the plane.
Julian went to Saipan, a US Pacific territory, rather than mainland USA, as that was part of the agreement reached by Australia's Ambassadors. Our US and UK Ambassadors accompanied him to Court in Saipan to make sure the deal was kept to.
Julian will now take time out to be with his family and heal.
Australia is happy his situation has come to an end. The White House still said he did wrong.
Fair play to Albo, although I don't think he is very bright, I rate him very highly in foreign relations so far, to the point that I would be a lot less sad if Labor wins the next election.
Its such a relief to have him home safe and sound.
Assange didn't leak the material, two AMERICANS did - Chelsea Manning and Edward Snowden
Thanks for responding to this.
What didn’t come across in this clip is that a former Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd (now Ambassador in the USA for Oz) had been diplomatically moving the dial regarding negotiation for months. The visit by the wide contingent of Aussie politicians really helped too. Finally the US Department of Justice was prepared to negotiate. One further reason was the Assange’s legal team had won the right to appeal the sentence in the UK because as a non-citizen, shoukd he be tried in the US he wouldn’t have First Amendment protection.
He flew to the US territory of Saipan because there was concern about him going to continental America. Clearly there was high level concern about that journey. Traveling with him was Steven Smith (Australian Ambassador to the UK) and Kevin Rudd.
And finally as soon as the plane touched down our current Prime Minister, Anthony Albanese, phoned him to welcome him home.
As somone who’s been a small part of the activist movement on his behalf, I spent much of the day following his plane on flight radar.
I’m so glad you didn’t shy away from this landmark moment.
I am Australian. Most people think he should never have been locked up in first place. It is good he is out.
The final decision, which resulted in the freedom of Julian Assange, is one thing. The Judicial Decision is Paramount. In every way, shape and form, Julian's 'freedom' is significant, in so many ways. His Freedom, as a Journalist, and ALL of that discipline, is fundamental to the absolute freedom of speech that underpins ALL Democracies!.
He did this as an Australian in Australia. He broke no Australian law. He has been persecuted by a foreign country for breaking one of their laws. What would America do if North Korea wants to jail someone who lives in America because they happened to post something bad on social media about Kim Jong Il. Do you think that America would say sure here he is, you can kill him because that is the punishment according to North Korea law, and ignore the American constitution that that person lives under. There is no controversy, he didn't break his country's laws. He is not a felon according to his homeland. He should not have been punished or persecuted.
Reference Otto Warmbier.

I feel like most Australians were glad that Ecuador helped him wait out the extradition for trumped up Swedish sex charges. Regardless of where you stand on the free speech/espionage debate, that would have been a travesty of justice.
I am very proud of my Australian Government and the way politicians of different parties came together to stand up to the US Government and say 'enough is enough'. I didn't agree with what Assange did at the time but came to learn more over 14 years and have come to believe that the US was hellbent on making an example of a non US citizen who was a PUBLISHER of documents while Chelsea Manning, who STOLE the documents, was pardoned in 2017.
As Anthony Albanese said, regardless of whether we agree with what Assange did, the Australian Government's job is to advocate for and protect Australian citizens and they have done that admirably.👏👏
At the end of the day Julian Assange pleaded guilty to a felony charge of violating the US Espionage Act. Whatever you think of the man and his actions, do not confuse issues of morality with points of law. When you stand trial, the prosecution has to show that what you did was unlawful - it has nothing to do with right or wrong. What people have to understand is that whistleblowers (and I am one of them) do what they do purely out of conscience and accept the consequences whatever they may be, which includes going to prison.
Unfortunately though there are thousands, if not millions of innocent people around the world that have had no choice but to say they are guilty to get a plea deal with a shitty but less extreme punishment because they didn't have a strong enough defense and the risk of trial was too great.
Yes that's not really the case here but technically the prosecution didn't have to prove anything, other than meeting the minimum standards to press the charges.
But I do want to sincerely thank you and other whistleblowers for willingly knowing and accepting the risk and sometimes putting you lives on the line when you discover injustice or corruption going unchecked!!! You are amazing human beings!!!
@@jessfinlayson1697Hello. Thank you for your comments and kind words. I think it just comes down to how much one can take before you get just sick and tired of the system. My experiences as a whistle-blower are not unique but are shared by all who have made the bold decision to expose corruption. It takes great courage to speak up against an injustice even if it means suffering recrimination and the loss of one’s professional standing, friends, job, income and home, as I did. Being cast out and branded a trouble-maker, a fabricator of lies and deceit, and someone not to be trusted, the consequences of being thrown to the wolves are both profound and far reaching. What a lot of people on the outside fail to realise is that a whistle-blower seeks to expose a corrupt and unfair system so that the whole community benefits, even though it may appear that self-interest is their only motivation. The personal cost of fighting the system has been significant, but fighting the prejudice of those who accept without question the word of authority has been even harder. But even if no one does take notice, we are ultimately compelled by our conscience; notoriety or (if I could be so crass as to say) "fame" is never the motivation. What is disappointing about Assange, who is a self-proclaimed anarchist has become an overnight celebrity and national hero, which he seems to enjoy. Even our own prime minister called Assange up to congratulate him on his arrival back in Australia. To my knowledge he is the first prime minister to welcome a convicted felon back to Australia. Yes, I understand Assange's conviction was cloaked in politics but the PM's lack of judgement was appalling. I didn't see him calling up David McBride when the latter was sent down the river for exposing alleged war crimes in Afghanistan by Australian soldiers.

I and everyone I know who understand what he did consider him a hero and I never thought he'd ever set foot in Australia a free man again. He is a beacon of truth, transparency and justice and I, as do many others, believe he was very unjustly held hostage for 12 years of his life. That is the price of exposing the truth of our unjust and, to be quite frank, evil system. He did what was right and what so many others would've been too fearful to do and he was punished by the powers that be. It's truly a spit in the face of the concept of "Government of the people, by the people, for the people." I'm so glad he was able to make it back home, free and safe and I am so glad for the bureaucracy that is international law that kept him from being taken to American soil where he most likely would've never seen the light of day again.
Xxx thank you for your interest in Australia
the reason it came about so fast and quick was a few weeks ago trump said he was thinking and would more than likely pardon him if he wins. then BANG released and back in Australia. YAY for him he shouldn't have been arrested in the first place. but this was done so fast to take the wind out trumps sails prior to the debate and election.

Trump had nothing to do with this, politicians from every Australian political party went to Washington to lobby for release. Trump was in power for four years after running his entire campaign on wiki leaks and did nothing to secure his release so pls stop the lies.
I agree that was probably partly the motivation. But Trump had the opportunity to pardon him before, and decided not to.
