    Brought back memories from back in the day of using small gasoline "ponies" to start the diesels on the old Caterpillar dozers. Thanks for the video...

    I've actually seen a hot bulb machine quite a lot bigger than this hand started in the ballarat showgrounds, victoria, australia. the exhaust pipe was a foot across. had like a decompression valve on the side of the neck of the bulb or somewhere there (was actually like a large threaded bolt with a handle they'd turn 3 revolutions to close it). they had the vaporized diesel coming out of it and hitting the blowtorch there for a few spins and the flames were ripping around and then off she chugged. power on a massive scale. apparently some farmer bought it in 1971 for $100 (scrap prices) and used it to pump water for 7 years or so then they got it from him.

      Thanks for that story. Pity you haven't got a video of it, sounds like an interesting encounter. Regards from the Emerald Isle.

      ***** I was going to, but felt it was a bit rude to film the guys. but I got the exhaust chugging away outside. I have a whole heap of very short videos with hot bulb engines and even 2 steam tractors. I tried to hook them all together to make like an 8 minute video with windows movie maker. and it all come out crap unfortunately. in the middle of the year when i get tax money back I'm likely to get a decent computer and maybe some decent video editing software so I might try then.

      I don't think it would be rude to film them starting an engine if they have it on show they'd probably expect that might happen. Hopefully you'll get your clips all joined up and uploaded soon. Looking forward to seeing them. Regards.

    Beautiful hot bulb engine.... uncommon nowadays.
    It consists of bulb like projection on the end of side of cylinder. In some heavy duty engine bolt and pin is provided.

    I just love how they use a smaller engine to start the big one!

    A hit and miss hot bulb engine? Never seen one of those before.

    • @rogertycholiz2218
      @rogertycholiz2218 6 років тому

      I really thought it was a hit-n-miss engine.

    • @gh0ulhuntertm847
      @gh0ulhuntertm847 6 років тому +1

      Hit and miss is a governing system

    • @rescue270
      @rescue270 5 років тому

      The exhaust valve is held open by the governor when the engine is on-speed. When the speed drops, the governor allows the exhaust valve to close so compression will occur and the engine will fire, bringing itself back up to speed. This was in use before sperk ignition came about, and continued to be employed with spark ignited engines as well. The ignition system would not be disabled when the engine was on-speed- only the exhaust valve would be held open. The spark plug or make-and-break points would continue to fire, but with no compression or any appreciable intake suction, no ignition would occur until the speed dropped and the exhaust valve closed.

      That's the way some engines work but definitely not this one, you may study it a bit better. Thanks for watching and commenting.
