The original owner was the Post cereal heiress. She named it mar-a-lago. When she died, the property was left to the government. They couldn’t afford the 8 million/year maintenance, so they put it up for sale. It was in a bad state when Trump bought it and restored it. He was allowed to form a limited resort/club to pay for the upkeep and maintenance costs. It is still a national historical landmark. Mar-a-lago means sea-to-lake in Spanish. Post apparently did want it to be used as a “winter White House” but never named it that.
