Mike, your videos are absolutely opened new dimensions to me. I love that you don't talk about specific gears, plugins and settings but conecpt and approach. Keep these videos coming!
You did it again, Mr. White.. Love the "cleanness" of the effect, especially when you added a slight de-tuning...I wish I had fast internet so I could attend your live classes, but no go at where I am at the time being....Cheers...
+CarlosGunX I will be switching over to a more efficient, better sounding platform soon. You can also stream just the audio from the class if you wish.
Great stuff, Mike. You are officially my favorite mixing coach on YT! Question: do you ever work with Urban and Hip Hop mixes? Most of what I get these days. I'd love to watch you apply your principles and practices specific to those genres (sample drums, subs, drum/bass clarity and distinctness etc). Regardless, keep up the great work!
Wow, Mike! Thanks a million for this video. I've been struggling with understanding ER's and you just summed it up to where a baby could understand this! Thanks again and all the best! :-)
Did you put the guitars into the same "room" reverb, the ERs, as the drums? Do you use one Early Reflection setup for the whole arrangement, or multiple ones?
+TimeMarchesOnBand Mono reverb on vocals can work great in dense mixes with a lot of stereo information and also works well as an effect to set up a mono or filtered transition to a wide full frequency sound. This is used a lot in EDM but is equally effective in alt rock records. It's all relative to the song and what works best. Cheers! Mike
What do you make of high-cut / low-pass filters that come on reverbs..? Cubase comes with a reverb called REVelation, and by default they have a high-cut on it set to 4800 hertz... I think generally I just leave it there because I don't want to question their infinite wisdom, but at the same time, don't really understand why they'd want to filter off everything above that point. Any thoughts..?
+kye903 The filters are an important part of shaping the sound of the reverb. High frequency reverb energy decays more rapidly than does lower frequencies. Especially in bigger spaces. That is really what the Damping control is. A filter on top of that helps shape the tone even more. Experiment with moving it around. For some sounds that are dull, a brighter reverb can add presence without harshness. I am going to shoot a new video on this soon. Cheers! Mike
bonjour j'aurais voulu savoir si on pouvait ajouter ou pas du predelay aux 1ères reflections ,si oui.. quelle incidence il y aurait sur le "front back" des instruments ?? merci
Translation: I would like to know if one could add a predelay to the early reflections. If yes, what impact there would be to the front back of the instruments? Bonjour! Adding predelay to the early reflections will make the size of the space bigger because it will take longer for the first of the early reflections to arrive. Most reverb plugins do not allow for this so it will require a separate delay plugin prior to the reverb. This will only effect the front back positioning if there are different predelays for each early reflection plugin. If the wet/dry balance is high, shorter predelay will move the sound back. With longer predelay, the dry signal will move forward. Hope you can translate this on your end! Merci! Mike
No, the Vahallaroom predelay does not delay early reflections, you need to add a delay plugin before the reverb. The Early reflections on the Vahalla reverbs are very good!
Although Mike's reflections on early reflections come a bit late in my life, they are still early enough to make me happy. ;-)
Can I use this quote in my book on early reflections?
@@mixingwithmike For sure Michael! And thanks again for sharing your expertise!

Had to come back to this one - so key! And you know it is when he put that last statement of free secrets at the end!
You are a great man! No one shares information like you do and it's greatly appreciated. Thank you.
+Leiam Sullivan Cheers Leiam!
Top content. Every other mixing channel just left the room...
Thank you Mike.

Cheers James!
thank you very much for your clearly explanation! after that, you would apply also another room verb with no ER for glue things more together?
Did you put the guitars into the same "room" reverb, the ERs, as the drums? Do you use one Early Reflection setup for the whole arrangement, or multiple ones?
May I ask when it comes to vocal reverbs when would it be appropriate to use a mono verb or delay over a stereo one?

Thanks for the Video,,, I already feel like I can Mix better! lol
Which drum library was used?
Great explanation and commentary but the video resolution is bad - you can't see what he's doing in the plugins
