Welcome to the vocal queens of kpop, Mamamoo. That "token rapper" just happens to be the most credited female writer in kpop. Her name is Moonbyul, or Moonstar because byul translates to star in English. Next to her is Solar, the eldest and the leader. She is known for her powerful belting voice and being a crackhead. Next is Wheein, the honey r&b voice. She is the glue of the group, able to seamlessly match the other three members voices. Lastly is Hwasa, the maknae of the group. First time I heard this video with no music, interesting for me because their so good at singing the music is clearly just some extra and not needed, or it is I have heard these songs 100s of times and know the music. This group is known for being extremely talented live vocalists and performers. All 4 of them can rap and sing, though Moobbyul is the lead rapper but her solo albums are where most of her singing is done. Hwasa is the one in white and is the one who does handle much of the different sounds that can be made by a voice, she also raps a lot in the older albums with moonbyul. The honey young voice is wheein and along with Moonbyul they handle the performance part for doing and learning choreo and etc for all 4 of them to do good performances which is why mamamoo is also known for putting on extremely good performances live, which include comedy skits and more. The powerbelter is Solar, leader of the group, not lead singer as none of them are that but she is known for that very powerful full and very consistent belt. She also has a very cute young sound like Wheein but you find that more in her solos and other songs. Yes all 4 have very successful Solo albums, busy women since with collabs, OSTs and covers they release about 25 songs a year and they are now 28 to 32 years old so 9 years of releasing music. All have youtube channels but Solarsido is Solar's there you will find a whole lot of interesting things, Covers, even an acapella of the last song on this video AYA, you might check out her End of year karaoke, she does a great frankie valli cover but more of a gem is she does one song from the Musical Mata Hari from when she starred as the lead actress last year. And if you do want a video of them live doing 2 full songs and a medley in between from this year, look up Mamamoo Hit Songs Live collection, the group went on the Hwasa show(yeah they do TV shows) and performed a new song 1llella(reggaeton) an extremely beautiful ballad Paint me and in between a medley of mamamoo songs and solos all to a live band. Dingo is now a few years old so this video shows their voices today. Sorry for the long comment, hope that gives you some background. Why they are so vocally talented is in their training days they were basically told they were not pretty, old, overweight, ugly and the only way they will succeed is to become the most talented vocalists and performers, insane I know. Plus they come from a small company which had no money so they had to earn this, doing things like busking on streets and venues in parking garages and lots of small town festivals. So they earned the fame they have now.
As you noticed, this is a medley of songs from throughout Mamamoo's career starting with their debut single in 2014 and ending with their latest single when this vid was filmed in 2021. It includes some but not nearly all of their biggest hits and is just the tip of the iceberg as far as the range and diversity of their discography, which includes several dozen group, solo and subunit singles and albums as well as CF and OST songs and numerous solo and group collabs with other artists. They're often described as the vocal queens of kpop who can sing anything and write a song about anything (and have a bunch of crack songs that illustrate the latter lol). Their discography includes everything from jazz, r&b, hip hop and latin pop to bossa nova, ballads, reggaeton, rock, EDM, pop dance tracks and more. Though Mamamoo's leader Solar (2nd from left) is sometimes described as their main singer they're really a 4X4 team of all stars and best friends and each member has a successful solo career as well. MMM was the first group to have all members chart on Billboard as solo artists while the group was still active as a unit. Funny you mentioned TLC. Mamamoo recently completed their first US tour, where they joined TLC and Spice Girls as the only girl groups to sell over 70K tickets on their debut US tour. Mamamoo is best when they're live because of their amazing, always live vocals, riveting stage presence and charismatic bff team chemistry. This studio session is excellent but they're even better when they've got an audience of moomoos (Mamamoo fans) to play with. The stage is their playground and they treat the audience as their playdate for the day. I don't think the comparisons to Christina and Ariana are off base. They've clearly marinated their vocal cords in the sound of classic western r&b and jazz singers and some of the artists they've covered or mentioned as influences include Ariana Grande, Beyonce, Rihanna, Amy Winehouse, Kehlani, Whitney Houston, Celine Dion, Natalie Cole, Eartha Kitt, Peggy Lee and Nancy Wilson (the jazz singer, not the Heart member). If you're interested in checking out more Mamamoo another terrific live sampler is the Immortal Songs Medley, which was filmed at a Mamamoo concert in 2017. It includes snippets of covers they performed on the singing competition tv show Immortal Songs 2, which they appeared on 14 times between 2015 and 2019. Unfortunately the tv network blocks reactions to their original performances on the tv show, which is too bad because each of them is a spectacular vocal showcase. If you want to find a way around the copyright block or just check them out on your own time two contrasting songs that I highly recommend are their radical rearrangement of the k-version of Tom Jones' Delilah and the Korean ballad Backwoods. If you'd prefer studio recordings you can safely react then have a listen to their vocal masterpieces Paint Me and Where Are We Now, both of which have music videos.

They are well blend together and harmonize perfectly. If watch together with the music, it will sound much more better.
Finally the Vocal Queens of Kpop 3rd generation. They are also well coordinated when they arent rehearsed. Sometimes they even speak and laugh in harmony. The rapper Moonbyul is also a vocalist and can sing just as well as the other three. Solar, Wheein and Hwasa. You should get into their solo work.
The killing voice is just a sample, it represents 50% of their vocal capacity, live without a track and dancing in heels is something else, the detail that they don't do to demonstrate, but because they love music.
they have the best vocal & live skills amongst kpop girl groups🥲 you can rarely have a kpop group with all members having the ability to host their own solo concerts and mamamoo is THE one.
If I have to match Mamamoo with English singers, I'd say Solar reminds me of Cristina Aguilera, Wheein - Ariana Grande, Hwasa - Rihanna and Moonbyul is Moonbyul haha she has something that I can't connect with any other singer.
You should react to their live stages. These girls always went crazy on stage. Solar - the one with the big belting in this video literally belting Despacito while swinging on a pole. I would recomend their Immortal song medley, Mamamoo 4 season concert solo stage, their Mama 2018/2019 performance.
Interesting experience hearing this performance without music. I've seen it a few hundred times, not counting watching reactions to it. Never heard it without music. :) Backing tracks are used pretty heavily in k-pop in general for various reasons(click track, etc) MMM tends to use them to help cover moments where the choreo makes it hard to sing into the mic. They tried headset mics for a bit. But they've gone back to handhelds for obvious reasons. :) Part of it is rehearsal. Part of it is the sheer amount of performances they do. And their company wanted them to focus on performance over appearance. They weren't considered to be the ideal look for a K-pop girl group when they debuted. Korean beauty standards, for K-pop artists, are pretty harsh. They did an episode of Take 1 on Netflix. They didn't start practicing for their "once in a lifetime performance in one take" until about a week before. If you get a chance it's worth a watch. Only complaint I had is that Netflix didn't really highlight the time pressure well enough.
All 4 can rap, Moonbyul and Hwasa do the majority of it though. All 4 can belt, dance, whatever they need to do. Honestly probably the most versatile kpop group. All of them having writing credits, Moonbyul with the most at around 70+. They are also very respected by all of the other groups. Watching the other groups react to them on Queendom was very telling.

That being said, I thought you were unusually quiet with a lot less commentary than I was expecting...but I'm just going to take it as you being in too much awe to speak XD It's a shame you removed the instrumental here on UA-cam - there doesn't seem to be a copyright issue with all the other reaction videos of Killing Voice - and I cannot access your Bilibili version. Hwasa (the one in white) was actually sick when they did this, so her voice sounds a little different than what is usually does. If you want to know what she normally sounds like singing I would recommend watching HWASA sings 'LMM' in MusicgraphyㅣDingo Music. If you enjoyed this and would like to see more of Mamamoo's live performances I would recommend their Immortal Songs medley or any of the individual Immortal Songs 2 performances (there's 14 in total). In many a fan's opinion including my own, they always sound the best when their performing live in front of an audience. But their music videos are always great fun, too.
Although I agree that the girls must have rehearsed the songs a lot, a good chunk of this performance was definitely ad lib. The motions you see are actually parts of the choreography. Their bodies just automatically dance to it when they hear the music. You should watch the original music videos or live performances of the full songs to compare.
Have you ever listened to Big Mama's Killing Voice as well? I'm pretty sure you will like it. Also, I loved the way you put this whole show with their voices louder than the instrumentals. That allows us to hear their voices often and cleaner. Peace out!

My sister has told me about this group before, but I never bothered to go listen. Very interesting. It would also be interesting to hear reactions to the AKMU brother-sister duo. Particularly the older stuff compared to the more recent stuff they've done now that the brother has been released from the army. Also reactions to any of the Korean acapella groups would be interesting too, eg VBEXIT.

If you enjoyed this and would like to see more of Mamamoo's live performances I would recommend their Immortal Songs medley or any of the individual Immortal Songs 2 performances (there's 14 in total). In many a fan's opinion including my own, they always sound the best when their performing live in front of an audience. But their music videos are always great fun, too.
Although I agree that the girls must have rehearsed the songs a lot, a good chunk of this performance was definitely ad lib. The motions you see are actually parts of the choreography. Their bodies just automatically dance to it when they hear the music. You should watch the original music videos or live performances of the full songs to compare.

Have you ever listened to Big Mama's Killing Voice as well? I'm pretty sure you will like it. Also, I loved the way you put this whole show with their voices louder than the instrumentals. That allows us to hear their voices often and cleaner. Peace out!
