  • Everyone who loves the blues, and loves guitar playing knows that Rory was a great guitarist, but much less attention is given to his songwriting, and his lyrics.
This video is about how Rory's songwriting works, looking at Tattoo'd Lady, from his 1973 album Tattoo. It's pretty wide ranging, looking at the chord progression, lyrics, context, genre conventions and wider cultural references.
I'm sure any fan of Rory will enjoy this video! Come for the info, stay for the memes :)

Excellent analysis. Fact is Rory as an artist should be taken serious, and not just another guitar slinger. Well done.

IMO, Rory was an outstanding songwriter. He had a wonderfully unique way of wordsmithing that separated him from others - coupled with his musical brilliance, the result was a fabulous catalog of songs with diverse themes and subject matter, and... some of his stuff was actually quite "deep". One just needs to listen.

Thanks for watching. Yes, I agree. I've loved Rory's music since I first heard it when I was a teenager, and I always appreciated his range and the depth of his music!

Thanks for this. I'd like to mention that Out on the Western Plains is an old Ledbelly song. What I loved about Rory is that he always credited those original blues people as he sang.
And I watched the Brian May interview. He first met Rory when he was a teenager and went up to talk with him after his show. Rory was packing his own equipment and took the time to talk with him. Several decades later Brian met Rory again and talked with him. And Brian said he was as nice to him as a big star but he hadn't changed his politeness of a young teenager. Brian said he learned not to be a dick in life. Great lesson.

Brian's love for Rory is so nice to see in that interview, isn't it.
Thanks for watching and leaving a comment - massively appreciated. I actually did a podcast episode about Out On the Western Plans back in November 2020. Check it out here: open.spotify.com/episode/4XwfVOXAN3dXwRbaLXEQFG?si=d6594b62b61245e1

Tattoo'd Lady, the live version off the Irish Tour 74' album, was the 2nd Rory song I ever heard and It is one of my favorite all time songs (especially that version). I think a lot of Rory's material could have easily hit the charts in the US if they were promoted as such. I Fall Apart in particular. I also think "A Million Miles Away" is fabulous from a lyrical standpoint.

A million miles away..... f*cking fantastic I agrree. Tattoo'd lady is my fav, I guess because it reminds of my work on the rigs, so many strange people all coming together and moving around.

Is this supposed to be funny? Rory had one brother, his name is Donal - no connection to the Oasis Gallaghers.
No, Rory was never part of a travelling Fair, but there are obvious parallels for a touring band almost constantly on the road. Many of Rory's songs tell a story, often from the point of view of a fictional character, some inspired by characters from books or films - that is neither phoney or an affectation, it's a perfectly valid concept.
I've always enjoyed the understated humour and wordplay in the Tattoo'd Lady lyrics
'...the fire eater... yeah he's a death cheater, some kinda central heater...'

Thanks for commenting. Yes, there are many jokes throughout the videos I make. I obviously can't guarantee that anyone who watches my channel will share my sense of humour ;) but I try my best.
Obviously I know Rory is not related to the Oasis brothers, but in my experience every time I mention Rory to someone who doesn't know him already, people say 'one of the Oasis guys?'
And now I've ruined the joke by explaining it haha.
I don't think Rory is fake, as I clearly say in the video, but that sort of story telling concept is by definition an affectation, which is the point I'm making. It's not a criticism.
      Thanks for watching!

@@bigyellowpraxis I think you're taking your literary degree either too literal, or not literally enough. you Are overthinking it though.😂 im surprised that in your research you didn't pick up that the song is about a carnival in his hometown. but his characters serve as...conjecture into what Carney life is like and perhaps its similarities to road life. its not affectation, its narrative. its also kinda...weird that you d say he s pure and authentic in one sentence, then phony in another. in his narrative, hes fallen for the tatood lady, but perhaps he never told her and in today's terms, hes put her in the friend zone, but feels a closeness to her because he works and plays alongside her. shes part of his community, adopted family. she's a pearly queen not because of that horrid outfit gah lol! shes a pearly queen because what barkers want your attention the most at a carnival? fortune tellers. what do they do? read cards. tarot cards. in tarot, he sees himself as king of cups, and he views her as a queen of swords but in a good way. he looks at her as a charitable person, a sweetheart. but his boss sadie, is one too but in a bad way. who drives them to work too hard, is skimming off the top of the sideshows's pay, and they all know it. to fund her lifestyle. so someone rats her out, but she uses her...sexual wares to bribe the da. err meaning during a tryst...you get the idea😂😂 basically he s calling her a loose woman. this could also be a (maybe to me) a not so subtle hint about how he felt manipulated while in negotiations with record labels. you know he made no compromises there and would've seen that while you were doing the homework. he hated the rock star image and didn't want to be looked at like a sex symbol(ie good lookin guy). that carnival, the real one he went to as a kid, must've held positive memories for him, and identified with that life and...just wrote a song about it! and when he was lonely, he revisited a positive childhood memory.🙅that's my interpretation, its my handle, because the song inspired me to get my first tat...at 50😂 btw, you can also see the same...affectation 😉in Coldplays Magic. misfit boy meets beautiful girl being mistreated by the nasty mustachioed carny promoter / drunken magician. same story roles reversed. check it out, see if you see the parallels. idk if Chris Martin knows of Gallagher or not but...maybe! see you on the flip side! oh btw, Queen just played in my city so I watched the upload. Brian May faithful to this day, don't do no Marshall stacks. 3 VOX 30s side by side. Rory would be proud.😊
