Disco was one of the best on the WCW roster and was never pushed enough. One of the best character ideas ever. Who doesn’t want to see a disco guy get his ass kicked? The visual of a disco guy kicking someone’s ass is just as good. You win either way with it.

I don't understand the hate with some people when it comes to Disco Inferno. Of course you don't have to agree with every opinion of Disco Inferno but he always gives constructive criticism. He doesn't just hate on things to hate on it. When something is good, great, excellent he's going to get into it. When its not good, then he'll trash it but almost always gives an idea that can maybe make it better.
And in WCW he stayed in his lane and mastered that and was damn good. Put some respect on his name!

I actually think AEW would do better if it enforced the older, forgotten wrestling rules.
Like no closed fist, no top rope, time limits, etc.
It would actually make the product establish guidelines for the audience (instead of wondering "Why do forearm shots? Why doesn't he just punch him?"). And the limitations give more creativity--and more options for storytelling finishes and getting heat (easy way for heel to cheat).
Not having them just means you have one less tool to use.

I agree with a lot of what Disco says here. I tend to favor WWE because of the larger than life characters, decent stories, and the athleticism shown especially from these new college kids in NXT. I want the performance to look realistic, but I don't want people doing risky shit or taking unprotected shots to the head because you end up seeing the surgery photos on Twitter or Instagram and that puts a drag on the product. It's why I don't watch boxing or MMA. I don't really want to see one person really bashing in another person's head. The wrestling move "inflation" where everyone's doing super kicks or powerbombs or DDTs that don't win any matches has to go. I also agree with Disco about a person looking at their opponent for what seems like forever waiting to catch them from a top rope spot or you'll have someone hold a metal chair like they're gonna bash someone in the head only to awkwardly position themselves to try and hit them in the back or in the gut. If you can't make it look good and realistic, you shouldn't be able to do it. If only they had some developmental area where performers could learn that kind of stuff...

I come from a fight sports background, it’s why Bret Hart is my favorite wrestler ever; his shit looks believable and he sold very well. The point is to simulate a fight, I can understand why certain people wouldn’t enjoy combat sports the way I do, but if someone wants to see gymnastics they would go watch gymnastics. There’s a middle ground that I think has been totally left behind by the obviously fake bullshit that some wrestlers do.

What an amazing conversation! Love the pushback you guys had on each other's opinions and how well you traded thoughts and ideas. In regards to raising the bar of how entertaining pro-wrestling could be, I just gotta say, I whole heartedly agree with Disco. Like you brought up a good point, Chris, on how there's just a higher demand for the flashiness since the sport has been evolving all these years.
However, and this could just be me because I stopped watching wrestling in the early 2000's in favour of MMA-but I think pro-wrestling can go back to a level of realism with a lot less flash and more substance if they can wean us off the high dopamine rush of high spot after high spot. As a kid I loved the acrobatics and high risk maneuvers and wish there was more now, but as an adult getting back into wrestling, seeing SO MANY high risk maneuvers...now I see why I loved them so much as a kid. Because they felt special and not often used unless the match called for them.
Now in regards to the realism aspect of it. I've watched matches from the 1950's and honestly I find those far more interesting than most matches these days. Why? Because a lot of time was spent chain wrestling and having it look like each guy was trying to vie for the best hold and position, and it took a while before there could be space and logic for bouncing off the ropes and pulling off crazy slams on each other. It was a little like this in the 90s too, but I can see the pivot happening, especially with the cruiserweights in WCW.
The few good examples of realistic wrestling I can think of in modern times is basically any Gunther match since he is super old school in his approach and his moveset. And of course, a match I've watched three times now, Seth Rollins vs Sami Zayn was a good example of how just simple and effective chain wrestling made the bigger spots even more significant later in the match.
Anyways thanks for having Disco Inferno on and it's a blast getting to hear what his thoughts are like on the whole business. He was one of my favourite mid-carders back in the day.

You never listen, you'll never learn.
