I think my Aunt and her family lived out in Marengo. Their house was in the country, near the edge of town and they had a couple of horses. That would've been around 1960.
The Marengo middle school is the site of the former High School, the new high school was built recently. Cafe 20 on Grant Highway near the current middle school has an AMAZING Friday night fish fry and an Oktoberfest every fall. They have a cute little Settler's Day parade every fall as well, with a little carnival and celebration. Definitely more exciting than Genoa. Marengo recently got a bowling alley and a Taco Bell! My mom was born and raised in this city, and I grew up in the nearby Woodstock. Lots of memories in both towns.
A friend of mine lived less than 200 yards away from the house that went "kaboom". Luckily no damage but it blew open the door from the garage to the house like it was kicked in and knocked some windows jambs loose from the framing. The subject house was literally shredded and all the other homes in the immediate vicinity were either totally or essentially demolished. Evidently the "house sitter" mentioned a smell and that the owner's cat kept getting sick, according to what I heard. Never did hear what actually caused the explosion.
My daughter and I went on a trip today to Mt Vernon from St Clair Mo. I can't believe the cost in reg, unleaded between the states. Mo is paying on average $2.79 per gallon, and Ill, paying $3.19 per gallon. $.40 difference between neighboring states.
What is the name of that song before you head into Downtown Marengo? I absolutely love it but I don't know the name. By the way, Marengo is small town but as far as economics and people that are starting to move there, really is really starting to show.
I wonder if they are showing gangster movies and you are supposed to shoot back at the gangster on the screen. 😬 I know that a lot of old theaters in small towns are repurposed into things like bowling allies, Gun ranges, some are now recording studios, performing arts centers, store front churches, etc.

I used to frequent Huntley before all the new construction. Even before they had McDonald's. Subway was there. But we never went. Now it is so huge. I think maybe Huntley is the only burb I will say doesn't suck 100% in the entire state.
