I don't know if you could hear me yelling at the screen -- in agreement over so many of these things! I am absolutely drawn in by the idea of something, rather than the thing itself. Pat McGrath is at the top of that list for me. I have the first Mothership palette. The formula is so fabulous, the neutrals are wearable for me...and then there are the special shades and duochromes, and I have to be honest with myself about how very little I would wear those, if ever. So it's fairly easy to pass on PM eyeshadow palettes. Same with the beautiful Danessa Myricks. Stunning! And so not something I would ever wear. Thanks for the fun video!

It's so hard to resist those gorgeous, special palettes when they're so beautiful to look at, but I have to be honest with myself. That just not my style. There were so many years that forced myself to wear colors or products that were popular but I'm glad I'm over that. I'm not forcing myself into any trends or viral products anymore. I'm trying to be very thoughtful with my purchases.

Hello! That's such a nice change for a video - and you are so right, often when we resist the initial urge we realise we don't miss those things after all. That being said, and not that I wish to influence you into buying anything, but the Guerlain Kiss Bee Oil is one of my favourite lip products ever. Most of the shades aren't shade adjusting. I like it a lot more than the Clarins - it's more pillowy and blurring on the lips. Have a lovely day!

Love the concept of this video, the products you're glad you skipped. Very sensible and well thought out. If only I could be so disciplined! I've been purchasing more makeup in the past few weeks than I think I have all year. The Byredo items I purchased online a few days ago arrived yesterday, and they are *so* beautiful. Their "luxe organic" aesthetic appeals to me so much more than any line in recent memory. Of course, that hadn't stopped me from ordering the Chanel oversize Enchanted Night holiday quad (that colour story is so not me, at least not today!) and a Dior holiday quint in the weeks before. Nice sturdy packaging, but generic IMO. "Generic luxury" -- the ultimate oxymoron!
I'm sorry to hear that after all this time, you're still in pain. I hope your Seattle appointment went well. 🩷

I can relate to several of the products you mentioned. I did buy the Westman A. lipstick and found them to be somewhat dry. I just add a lip balm before. They are very pretty and long lasting. I tried the Prada foundation, which most folks loved. It ain’t cheap - it’s $70! Did I like it? Yes and no. It gives my skin a nice youthful glow - I’m not a spring chicken - but there’s very little coverage for me. I’m returning it.

I also don’t buy from celebrity brands. My first choice is always a make up artist brand. I like having one main brand and then supplementing the items they don’t do as needed, and those can be trendy. For example, I’m a jones road girlie for essentials, but i love a lip stain which jr doesn’t have in their range, so i got a couple k beauty lipstains to try. I have also reached this place of not needing the best of everything, meaning maybe another brand, let’s say dior has a more shiny , more finely milled, more pearlescent highlighter than jones road, but i like the way the jr looks on me, so it’s good enough and I will actually use it every day. I’ve done a lot of work trying to break away from “comparison shopping “, knowing that just because a new makeup item is slightly different than one already own, doesn’t mean it’s better or worth the price.

    • @thelipstickgal
      @thelipstickgal  Місяць тому

I love your perspective. So true, I'm always comparison shopping. That's part of the gig here on UA-cam, but for an everyday collection, I can see how it's not necessary.
I know my collection would be so much smaller, and highly curated if I wasn't running a YT channel. I used to be brand loyal too. It's been years since I've picked up most of my stuff from one brand, and supplemented from others. I love that you do that. It keeps you from chasing the next new thing. Thanks so much for your thoughtful and though provoking comment. I appreciate it.

I like videos like this! I’m glad you aren’t getting things you wouldn’t actually use. I tend to follow creators, including you, who have similar preferences to me. It makes it easier to weed out what’s just popular or viral versus something I’d really like. I’ve realized that I can appreciate a brand or a makeup artist, I can even love their formulas- but, if they are in colors or finishes I wouldn’t use, there’s no point. For example, Pat McGrath has an amazing lip gloss formula, but almost all the colors are glittery or holographic.

I actually got more of the pinks and a red, and do love them. Admittedly, with all of my lippies, I cannot possibly give them all proper love and need to just accept that, LOL! And, as beautiful as the new Danessa palette was, and how I do love and rock color, AND the amazing packaging,, I skipped knowing I would end of loving it from afar and would be overwhelmed with it.

I agree with everything except the Guerlain lip oils. I definitely get it if you’re not into color adjusting, seems like a lot of UA-camrs are, but I really love them! It’s nice especially when I’m out and about for my kid’s sports on the weekends and don’t want to keep applying lip color. I just love that it stains and stays pretty much all day. Plus the packaging and the whole experience is lovely. But again, if you’re not into “ph adjusting” then you would hate that product, so good call. I would also suggest staying away from their Kiss Kiss Bee Glow balms as well because it’s especially the same thing, different delivery system. But both are items I cannot go without I’ve been through MANY. Funny how different makeup preferences can be.
Anyway, thanks for sharing this video with us. Sending my best! :)

I love this concept for a video!
I feel the same way about the Makeup Forever face palettes (and Hourglass face palettes). I don’t ever end up using face palettes. I just don’t. I stopped buying them. I got last year’s Hourglass palette and ended up giving it to my daughter because I just never reach for face palettes.
I had passed on the DM Lightworks and DEFINITELY didn’t need it…but I bought it in the Sephora sale as I was shopping to improve my feelings after the election results. 😐 🤦🏻‍♀️
I have it now, so I’m using it, but I really didn’t need it. I usually ground colorful shadows with neutral mattes, but because I do wear colors, I have PLENTY of colorful shadows.
You are NOT the odd man out! I have zero interest in the Rhode balms-or anything Rhode. (I love the Naturium balms). My daughter got a Rhode balm and it got gritty when it got cold and warming it up didn’t change that. It was just gritty forever then. No thanks. And that Rhode blush packaging is chunky and awful.
After that in the video, I’ve also passed on everything you have passed on for many of the same reasons. (Except for Roxa, which I love, but I’m a purple eyeshadow lover, and the CT Cinematic Red lipstick…it’s a different muted, brown red on me and I like it) I’m glad I’ve passed on all of these, too! Good for us!

The Lisa Eldridge Rouge lipsticks are stunning. I really enjoy them, and I'm glad I have them all. I'll probably pick up the Bohemian Cherry when it's available, and I'm excited to see what else comes in the future in the refills. Thanks so much for watching today.

I feel the very same way about PML eyeshadow. Albeit loving last year's big palette (if i want a jewel green, i now got it) i do not walk around town in stage makeup intensity. I'm not only overwhelmed by choice in big palettes, they aren't handy for my morning routine either. Motherships heavy as a freakin brick isn't helping the least, to mildly express how i feel about pretentious nonsense like added weight.
Then, at 20, out clubbing, getting ready is an event, very different story.
I know better, i know i like my european quints and quads, yet often these color stories are too wonderful to pass up.
I hope to work on my mindset over the holidays, dive into my collection, re-organize and at best get clear about a no-buy year ahead. It is hard, especially thinking of limited editions🤡 i want some cheat-options but fear it will spoil the mission and defeat the purpose. I know it's OG Poppy, but there are a few of the Seven Deadly sins I would love to try, but not if the formula is the same. It was very stiff, and dragged on my lips. It's the original formula from the 90s. I feel like we've come so far, why do we still have to make the same lipstick over again. Same color, yes! Updated formula, yes! I don't think the glas bottle is great to carry around yet i in general have trust issues towards these classic applicator containers and prefer tubes.
