- MASSIVE WAVES AT BLACK'S BEACH AND LA JOLLA COVE. It's rare when San Diego surf gets big enough for La Jolla cove to start breaking!
A Bombing WNW Swell brought epic surf to California in January 2023. Surfline named this swell one of the top five largest west-northwest swells of the last 15 years. Blacks Beach and La Jolla Cove were two of the spots that could hold the size of this historic swell.
The Wild West SoCal recap will continue with two more videos from this epic run of surf in San Diego!

The dismount at 1:02 EPIC!
Def capped a good ride😁
WOW the cove in la Jolla was where I swam all the time, what a fond memory
Thumbs up for the Body surfer
I second that!
That guy's gotta have balls the size of balls
@@jonslg240 I wonder if hes part fish, Whats his hold down time..
@@christopherfedele6081 With fins and no board tethered to him he's likely better off than the stand ups who get buried.
@@mikel5582 agree. It's far easier to dive dep without a leash to a board
Love that it is just the natural sounds. The sound of water winds waves....and some people.
So much better than jarring soundtracks.
I get rolled by a 3’ wave and I’m pretty sure my life’s gonna end. I have no idea how these people don’t die. My utmost respect.
I felt that beautiful
You stay calm and hold your breath
go watch some of Kirby Browns stuff... dude surfs the most dangerous waves. Insanity to be honest.
Ehh Im a freediver who learned how to hold my breath for 4 minutes and I still feel like that when im held under for more than 3 seconds in surf
I lived there for 30 years.. never saw waves more than 1/2 that size... amazing.
I’ve lived there for almost 70 years and have never seen waves that size at Blacks.
I lived in La Jolla too, at Windansea.. Never seen waves like this at blacksbeach..
I love the sound of breaking waves. Looks like a nice day for surfers.
I could watch this all day. Nice to see some people getting the ride of their lives 🤙🏽
DeSantis has outlawed this video in Florida because it says ' blacks '........
Kindred spirits :D
Man, really makes ya appreciate the talent of the pros…
Half these lads got worked over pretty well. 😮
For taking-on these monster waves!
Spent childhood summers in La Jolla and am amazed to see these 🌊!
Even La Jolla Shores was pumping. Absolutely insane swell..
I was there. It was amazing to watch.
I'm so jealous right now
Went there over Xmas and new years. It was Insane then (from the Midwest). Crazy to see how much more insane it got after.
That's insane! I've lived in San Diego County my entire life and I've never seen it like this... then again I'm not a huge surfer. But still, WOW!!
Same with Me. Biggest Surf I have seen in San Diego.
Go to La Jolla Cove. 🤣
@@johngulino2651 for sure!
this is a rare sight for san diego for sure!
The waves are this big, or bigger everyday in San Diego.
The lifeguard on the jetski was awesome! Making sure everyone was safe and having a good time!
Bbbbbbbbitchin' Anyone else noticed those big dark shadows lurking in the waves. Thanks for the post 🤟😎👍
Probably seals. I've bumped into them while I've been there and seen them bonk ppl in the water on several occasions. They're A-holes, but very cute ones. Lol
Looks like something at 0:41
Those look like they are 20 ft! Cool to see dolphins (? hopefully not sharks) in the wave! Those surfers are all amazing and more than a little insane!
Wow 🤩 ve never seen waves this big in California
Used to dive that cove a good bit in my Navy days. Usually pretty tame but we generally had to time our return to the beach underwater with the waves. You would let the wave push you forward and jam your dive knife in the sand to hold position as it swept back out and then pull it out of the sand as the next wave moved you forward again. No way to fight it and no way to be on the surface and getting rolled in the surf with scuba gear on… Fun times!
WOW!! I miss Cali waves so much!! Thank you for this beautiful video. Makes me 😭😍
Trust me you don't miss the waves in the San Diego area that much lol
Other parts in socal? Absolutely
This is not usual waves in Calif.. 5 - 6 ft is good.. I doubt if these guys were really ready for 16 ft!
the atmospheric river whatever bomb cyclone apocalypse created these killer 🏄🏻♂️🏄🏻
Epic! Never seen the cove like this... we ended up getting some great waves down here in Baja 🔥🇲🇽🚀💥🌊
Great to see nice waves being enjoyed 👍 Brings back memories 🌊🏄
absolutely insane, its been a great season for surfers, snowboarders and athletes alike.
yup the apocalyptic cyclone brought destruction but also brought us 🎁 gifts. water, waves, and snow!
@Repent and believe in Jesus Christ 😒
I lived in California from birth (1988) until age 30, and surfed all my life.. Can honestly say I have never seen Blacks or any coastal socal break sending bombs like this. Wedge, DMJ, and even Brooks Street Laguna I’ve seen pushing 20ft faces, but some of these waves are approaching Puerto Escondido / Pipeline level. This is fucking nuts.
@@michaelmchenry8280 fuck fuckity fuck fuck. It’s a word. Move on.
@@michaelmchenry8280 Yep, there's some foul mouth cunts about
@@michaelmchenry8280 To the contrary, it’s the perfect use of it given how “fucking nuts” it was out there.
Those surfers are incredible I'm a east coast guy so this is fascinating
come to the west coast, it will change your life. i left the east coast 15 years ago
Yeah. So Cal now but I lived on the East and Gulf Coasts when I was young and - no - you'll not be seeing surf like that very often there. Don't remember what it was like in the 5 Hurricane I was in. That's something we DON'T have in So Cal now.
.
Yeah Cali, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico have the most insane swells when they hit right. 20 ft plus happens regularly
Damn, that guy at 1:37 got worked. He paid heavily for that barrel.
I'm only that far into the video and I'm already in awe.
Nice shots!! Fun day not often it gets this big. Keep charging!💪🌊🤙👍🦆
This is so great!! 🔥🔥🙌🙌🙌
Simply smashing! Brave surfers 🏄♂️ 🌊 💪.
Totally awesome
AWESOME!
Use to go to Black's regularly. One of CAs great beach stretches. 2-3 mis long as I recall....Never saw waves like that. Outstanding!
Nice. Good seeing my ole stomping grounds in the late 80's.
Huge waves for that area. I was out today and it was smooth as glass in La Jolla!
Almost drowned off shell beach spear fishing. That was more then 10 years ago.. crazy it’s been that long. I surfed and fished these waters for years. I live in Coeur d’ Alene now watching all these insane UA-cam videos on this swell. Makes me sad I missed it😢
Don't go spear fishing when you're drunk bruh, and just smoke weed like Rob Monchado and grow some dreads and wear a seashell necklace bra.
I am moving from WA Oly Pen ,to CDA area , not the lake itself. Is the traffic in CDA really insane during summer ? How is Hayden Lake for a more peaceful time? I hear the CDA lake is just so noisy all summer. And, I need a little acreage. Any fav areas?
@@ediewall6360 Hayden is amazing
@@ediewall6360 I lived in Carlsbad California when my son was born 16 years ago, his name is Hayden after the lake I grew up on. I’m very fawned of Hayden lake
@@catchingwildmeats Awww how sweet. I grew up in Santee. I certainly know Carlsbad. I will be moving before summer , somewhere in the greater area. I have plans for beneficial projects to being in 2025. Will help community a great deal. Humanitarian Projects, once certain technologies are made available.
Fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome !!!!
Great video!
Nice. Finally some big waves
Nice dude thanks for this. Great to see so much epic local footage. Keep it up. Love the Zeke ad as well. That guy is nuts.
What day was this?
Agreed, thank you.
Also I want to know what day, too
@@michellekurtiscole9407 I have to think it was today but I could be wrong
OTC 🤙🏽
I lived in San Diego back in the mid-70s, 🌊🌊🏄 waves like this are b very seldom seen in Southern California , normally it's all just breakwater
Body surfer is my hero
Cool!
Thank you 🙂
Thanks for sharing
Beautiful LA Jolla
These surfers have got to be crazy!
Well done
Wow!
That’s sick!
so weird to see surfing at the cove. normally just a dive, snorkel and swim spot since it's so calm...normally.
These folks are badass. Not only great surfers - if you're not from the west coast you may not realize that the water temp is less than 60 degrees.
wet suit time
Used to live for days like this when the 6’3” Midget Smith thruster stayed in the car and broke out the custom MR I was able to have made and picked up on a trip back home for my sister’s wedding in 1997. 6’6”, pop in the longer fins, good times.
Breakfast burrito (with plantains) from a little place on the way back to Encinitas, clean up and sometimes hit Lou’s Records for sweet music deals.
I need to get out more. I had no idea we had such big waves.
That is super gnarly
Body surfer got a sick one
I grew up surfing there….never saw waves like that. Maybe at Huntington, but not there!
Didn’t often see waves like this at HB, either. Down the road at Newport River Mouth which could handle the bigger swells was usually our go to in the day. ✌🏼
LIFE !!!
AMAZING PRIMO FOOTAGE!!! WOW!
When the guy falls and there are all those people trying to dive under, I wonder how many times bodies collide. Also, when that guy jumps off the end of the wave, the leach slingshots the board back at him. Has to hurt if that hits him.
All i need is some tasty waves and a cool buzz
Where’d You get that Jacket….?
Looking like Portugal now! Amazing
Which day were these vids taken? Yesterday? Or Jan 7th weekend?
Huge waves at Pb point / Hermoes yesterday and today… broke my board in half this morning😢
I broke my board at blacks yesterday, I feel it
I'd guess it was more recent, just because of the incentive to post
I'm guessing this was yesterday or the day before based on the clear skies
It's been raining like crazy..
But it absolutely could have been a week ago or so
Okay thumbs up if you remember TNC surf on Matendo back in the day
Been to San Diego a few times and never seen waves like that! Why were they so huge?
Holy Smokes!! 😳
Very brave gals and dudes
My salute
Wow
Insane waves for that beach been there. Prime real estate.
So sick
Couple massive clean ups.
❤️🔥❤️🔥❤️🔥
1:03 lol sweet :) heaves a small sigh from 500 miles inland . . .
I felt the first one . At least he had the over the falls last breath
You have to be incredibly talented, very brave, or plain insane.
San Diego not used to seeing the whole Ocean stand up LOL
Yes, Tama, most are not. That's some real stand up right there lol.
Amaze Zing and new subscriber
Wow..San Diego just turned into Portugal.
Scary
Daaaaaaam
thanks for the great video, but what the heck happened at minute 10:50? A massive set was coming in and everyone was scrambling to make it out....then nothing. I was so bummed
Ditto; weird.
Great photos. I use to body surf at the cove or boomers years ago.😂
Give blood
@deez You probably don’t even know where the place is.😳
Dayummmm
Nazare hits Cali !!!
Looks like some east coast swell dare boys
@ 5:15 - Sharky’s dorsal breaks the surface while enjoying the show!
🌊💙
A few sharks peacefully surfing there also.
Wow looks like nor cal
Grew up surfing down there in the 80s baby, winter swell 82-83,almost as big as this but nowhere as clean. One thing I have noticed here is that yes the skilled and or pros are getting better, but the kooks are exactly the same set of dorks I used to paddle with.
Aloha, magnificent. How many feet were those waves 🌊?
Nice to see some whompers 🏊🏼out there riding the big stuff.
Gotta be able to hold your breath for at least 2 minutes on dry land to surf this stuff lol, or at least 1 minute in a situation most would find terrifying
A wave half that size would scare me to death
This what it’s like in my dreams. The size of the waves I mean. It’s a reoccurring dream that all ways leads up to a meteor strike. Sometimes it feels like after the strike and life went on like now, just beaches where there wasn’t and mountain ranges in new places. And a lake at high altitude that is new.
And time at time of filming? Good to see a jet ski out there to help out if needed.....man jealous as heck.
There are seals everywhere out there, as well as sharks!
That reminds me of the Guinness ad in the 80's
0:41 *runs over dolphin in wave*
I keep hoping to one day see someone charge that death slab at the top of the reef. That one dude looked like he was keen or maybe just accidently floated out there.
Look like like the bonsai pipeline Hawaii monster waves not too many surf em out all the way without crashing
Very nice....big waves are sure there for the taking. Anyone know the tide at t
