  • Dr. Lera talks about pancreatitis in dogs with Brady, a 10-year-old Cavachon.
When the pancreas becomes inflamed, the condition is called pancreatitis. Pancreatitis commonly occurs in dogs. There is no age, sex, or breed predisposition. Pancreatitis may be acute or chronic.
Cavachon is a mixed breed dog-a cross between the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and Bichon Frise dog breeds.

One of my dogs recently passed away due to pancreatitis. Her condition progressed rapidly from the time of diagnosis and she ended up passing away four days later. Over the last few weeks, she had been drinking excessively and had lost the ability to tell us when she had to pee. I also noticed that she had started tucking her tail between her legs more and more, and she started shuddering when I would go to pick her up. Every once in a while she wouldnt eat a meal, but this particular week she went a full day without eating, so we decided to take her to the vet. The vet suspected it was pancreatitis with diabetes and a possible bladder infection. The vet administered a vomit suppressant and told us to wait until she started eating to administer insulin. But she never started eating again. The vet told us to cook chicken and rice and feed it to her, but she didn't want that either. Eventually she started to have mild diarrhea but she was still able to go to the bathroom on her own. The next time we took her to the vet she was given Buprenorphine, which pretty much knocked her out, and she lost the ability to control her bowels. Her stools started evacuating and you could see that there was dark blood, which was indicative of internal bleeding. She never recovered. On the last day before she passed, she was given painkillers again and we were told to force feed her. She ended up throwing up the food during the night, and the next morning it sounded like she was struggling to breathe. When we took her to get euthanized she passed away after a sedative was administered, before the vet had a chance to inject the euthanasia. We had planned to take her to the vet the week prior, but were unable to get an appointment due to COVID restrictions. That little delay could have made the difference between saving her life and ending it. The vet thought she was a 5/10 on the acute pancreatitis scale. Boy were they wrong.

My poodle mix of 14.5 years just passed away in March, and I still can’t wrap my head around it. It all happened so quickly! Mine was diagnosed with diabetic ketoacidosis, which was fatal. I made an appointment with his vet, but they couldn’t see him for a month. I had to take him to a different vet. After spending $1200 with this vet, he was referred to an ER. My dog stayed there for a few hours to receive IV fluids. When I decided to take him home, he couldn’t urinate, so his dog bed was all wet the next day. Then I took him to another ER. They wanted him to be hospitalized for 1-3 days. After 12 hours there, the vet suggested euthanasia because no matter how much I wanted him to get back to normal, he wouldn’t, and his condition may have been worsening, not to mention the high bills. I had to make the hardest decision. I wish I could have taken him to see the vet earlier so he might still be alive 😢. He would have been 15 in August and used to walk with me for 1 mile a few times a week, like he did in December/January. But on the other hand, at least he had a good 14.5 years, and he didn’t suffer much. He just went into a long sleep. I knew two people whose dogs went through huge surgeries, then they died after 2 months or so. It’s us humans who emotionally suffer and feel sad, with a void in our lives. We miss their unconditional love to us that we may not be able to find somewhere else.

My Weimaraner boy (11yrs old) just had his first ever bout of Pancreatitis. He was having Diarrhoea over two days and then vomiting with the frequency of diarrhoea getting worse (it got to every 40 mins he had an episode) , then blood appeared in his diarrhoea. I demanded vet saw him immediately. On physical exam he seemed fine, normal heart rate etc, then he let off some blood and the vet knew it was serious. A blood test later and his analyse and lipase was showing very high and the vet said Pancreatitis. Immediately he was put on antibiotics and IV drip for rehydration. He’s currently in intensive care 🙏🙏

Thanks for the informative video. I'm picking up my 15-yr-old Bichon mix today after a 2-day hospital stay. He did very well with supportive care. The surprising thing to me was that he was otherwise perfectly normal before I decided to take him to the vet -- seemingly happy, very active, alert, eating as usual, pooping and peeing fine. The only thing that was a red flag to me was his unusual behavior with me. He started prancing around me for hours, going up on his hind legs, and following me from room to room all day long. I decided to have our vet give him a physical. She did an US and saw a lot of "gas" that wasn't moving in his digestive tract, so she sent me to the hospital with him. I'm thankful that his was not a severe case. Now, I will put him on a prescription low-fat diet (I have never given him table scraps!)

what the vet didn't tell you about is the cost for all this treatment. my 3 year old american bulldog got acute pancreatitis. she went from 80 lbs to 50 lbs in a month because she wouldn't eat or vomited every time she did eat. after several vet visits a two night stay at the vet with blood work and x rays and IV for fluids the bill was thousands of dollars. the vet also told me i could take her to a specialist for and ultra sound just to make sure it was pancreatitis but that was another thousands dollars. i ended up having to put her down a couple weeks later because she her condition wasn't improving and i simply couldn't afford the vet bills. all this took place in 2011. pretty sure it would be even more money today

My dog have pacretitis right now and he was very bloated. He is not urinating often like he used to and fluid was stuck in his body causing for him to be bloated. We were shock because his weight rapidly increase and you can notice the sudden changes in his body shape as well. He eat and drink well before that so the vet advise that our dog should undergo 24hrs fasting for his pancreas to be rested. Right now our vet texted that my dog is fine and now urinating and we can get him later. Dont forget also to monitor the bowel, urinating movement of our dogs

My dog had gallbladder removal along with intestinal surgery during the gallbladder removal because there was possible blockage and they didn’t want to take any chances. It ended up being a hairball (she licks my Jack Russell clean if he gets rained on). Also while in there took a liver biopsy. No cancer. She was sent home the next day throwing up. I had to rush her to ER because she couldn’t hold water down. They didn’t give her any pain meds. They didn’t give her antibiotics just easily digestible food and supplement sameq. One month my dog only ate 4 cans of dog food and they didn’t seem worried. Now three months later I took her back. Her stomach was swollen and she was in pain. I asked for blood work. They said we just did bloodwork it’s not necessary however I insisted. Came back and they said she has hypothyroid and pancreatitis. They sent her home with low fat food. That’s the extent of my dogs care plan. I don’t think this low fat food is helping her. She is a dog with a sensitive stomach even before this all started. The food makes her very gassy so I bought natural balance limited low fat food and she def tolerates that better. However, I think she ate cat poop in my yard or my neighbors are poisoning her. So I have been taking her out on a leash. Her stools are solid but she seems dehydrated but is drinking water. I checked her temp and she doesn’t have a fever but I feel something is wrong. She is drinking water but when I pull her skin up it sticks. Her gums look pale. I have had her to 3 veterinarians now and they are all horrible. Is probiotic recommended?

@@DrLera Thanks for your informative video! My dog has late stage CHF, and she seems to showing signs of either pancreatitis or kidney failure. Series of events happened as vomiting twice with slight bile and blood, then diarrhea. After being put on anti-nausea drug and antibiotics for 3 days, diarrhea stopped and no vomiting since the very first 2 episodes, poop was rather dry with blood in it. As soon as the antibiotics stopped, she seemed to have lost appetite, now refused to eat completed, and diarrhea returned with watery texture and brown-ish color. And she acted rather weak, and needed to be carried around to places, say sofa or her bed. The weirdest part is that she kinda of immediately froze as soon as we put her down to any places, and would keep that posture for a long time (not the typical prayer type for pancreatitis). There’s no fever or anything, but local vet is suspecting pancreatitis as kidney bloodwork doesn’t look very bad when all things started. Question is if it’s indeed pancreatitis, considering her long history of battling CHF (15 months and counting), is there a chance that she can fully recover?

What I am searching for, and what was not answered here or anywhere that I can find, is how this progresses to the end. My dog ate part of a corn cob and the next day she vomited. I took her into the vet and they weren’t concerned because she was eating and pooping. She continued to vomit every 1 to 2 weeks. I return to the vet and she was treated for Gerd. And that didn’t work. We tried different meds. This was over a period of six months and several trips to the doctor. A blood test revealed elevated lipase. An ultrasound and biopsy showed no cancer. She has steadily declined over the last six months at a shocking rate to me (10 months since vomiting first occurred. Every week we lose something else it seems. The first thing I noticed was that she wouldn’t get up to greet people when they came to the house. Now there are days when she barely gets up to reposition herself. She’s been vomiting daily for a week now. I had to call six times To two different vets, the regular vet and the specialist, before somebody would finally called me back and give me some anti-nausea medication, which I think she should’ve had a long time ago. I asked for it. I asked for a referral to a nutritionist if they couldn’t tell me what she would be eating. And the attitude has just been laissez-faire. I’ve read other messages here where the attitude was “just don’t do anything different”, Which is what both of Cindy’s that have been saying but that’s not good enough. She’s not interested in breakfast at all and hasn’t been for a month now. So how does this end? She’s thrown up every day for more than a week (once a day, twice one day). Is this the new normal? I was told this would be an up-and-down disease. This has been a decline instead, a steady progressive decline. I believe she’s slowly dying from this. How is it going to end? Where does it go from here? If she’s throwing up every day does she feel awful all the time? When do I euthanize? This is what I keep trying to find out and I can’t find it anywhere.

You will need to find a diet that works well for him and then stay consistent with that diet. As long your dog is not allergic to chicken then I would think that would be ok. That being said I have seen some patients that chicken and rice does not work for them. So it will be trial and error. There are also some prescription diets that work well for dogs with a past history of pancreatitis.

Get your dog some high quality digestive enzymes Dr. mercola has a really good one, this is the single most important supplement you can give to your dog with pancreatitis it takes the strain off of their pancreas to produce enzymes
Also you want to increase the nutrient density in your diet while keeping a low fat also include high quality omega-3 sources like fish oil or even better krill oil again Dr. mercola has a great krill oil for dogs this type of fat has been shown to help pancreatitis which might seem counterintuitive that it’s adding fat but it’s been shown to help,
I have my dog on what I think is a very nutrient dense and healthy diet the only question I have is about the amount of carbs should I be adding if I go low fat so I’m still trying to figure that out exactly but if you want a much better source of meat go for grass fed ground beef and then when you cook it drain off the fat I can’t tell you to do this for sure because I don’t unders understand exactly how much fat is going to be left over that’s another thing I’m trying to figure out but you can see your physically draining off a lot of fat so I’m OK with doing it for now plus I’ve seen multiple recipes where are use a lean ground beef and drain off the fat for pancreatitis
My dog doesn’t have it severe that we know but he did have a flareup the other day so we’re taking the precautionary measures for pancreatitis
Also get your dog meal mix by Dr. mercola it’s a way to get a nutritionally complete high-quality supplement all you have to do is add it to a high-quality protein source and you have a nutritionally complete diet although I would still do a lot more than just use that
Basically what I do as I cook my grass fed 93/7 beef, Walmart and BJs have the best prices for that I’ve found, then I sprinkle on top of my supplement powder that I’ve pre-portioned and then into tiny mason jars
I pre-portioned them out once every two weeks so I only have to do it once every two weeks
Inside the jar I have meal mix I have desecrated organs including pancreas which will help pancreatitis I have digestive enzymes from Dr. mercola I have grass fed bone powder from four leaf rover I have a berry blend organic from four leaf rover also organic mushroom blend,
I have a sprinkle of ginger and Rosemary
I have an organic pre-and probiotic blend from Amazon,
Grass fed organic collagen from Dr. mercola
A supplement called green eggs from four leaf rover
      And other stuff
Then add at least an eighth of a cup of water or more to substitute all of The water taken out of these high quality foods
So basically it’s a way to get super high-quality nutrient dense food super conveniently, juts sprinkle it on your beef
      And add some water
I also add fresh sweet potatoes sometimes
But my dog really doesn’t care for any plant foods he really only wants animal Foods it makes sense because he’s a wolf and wolfs are primarily carnivores and it is speculated that they really do not need that much plant material like cats many doctors nowadays will speculate, as well as many doctors will speculate about humans like dr. Paul Saladino, who is an example of a great carnivore diet doctor
Another great doctor to listen to is Dr. Karen Becker she is one of the best pet health and pet nutrition experts around
She’ll tell you about 10-30% plant foods for your dogs
Also if you want a high-quality dog food that is for convenience sake look into
      woof
They have a freeze dried or raw grass fed beef high quality dog food that I will bees any kibble you can find and most other freeze dried raw foods
And since you’re bringing a pancreatitis is one of the only freeze dried raw foods I found that has low fat I would suggest asking them what amount of fat it has before making a confidence switch but you can tell it has low fat by reading about the description on it it says low fat as well
Only problem is that it’s quite expensive
But remember it is desecrated food so it really makes about 3 to 4 times more food once you rehydrate it
Once again you don’t really have to worry about making an entire meal prep in my opinion and then freezing it all you have to do is make a fresh cut of the leanest beef you can find
      drain the fat
And then sprinkle on top your nutrient dense supplement powders that I listed and you can include a fresh vegetable or two if you want and you have yourself a great meal to help heal your dog like I said the only thing I have questions about are the macro ratios exactly how much fat exactly how much carbs so I’m still trying to figure that out myself and I will get back if you are interested but for now I would just go away in the ground beef drain the fat and I had a decent add 20% or so of high-quality carbs like sweet potato no need for rice In my opinion
You can buy sweet potato and powder which I do as well
Or you can buy pre-package frozen so all you have to do is microwave it
But once again you really don’t need to make an entire meal plan with with a bunch of cooked vegetables and shit and stuff all you have to do is cook a fresh slab of meat which I cook in the microwave for 40 seconds then drain the fat add your high-quality nutrient dense supplements with some water and then maybe add a vegetable or two if you want to even though you’re getting clean vegetables in desecrated form if you do what I do
Animal Foods should be your priority when feeding dogs and cats plant foods or secondary as well as added nutrient dense foods like organs, High quality supplements like ones from dr Becker and Dr. mercola, and krill oil..
Very long-winded but I hope it helps
And again I’m not a doctor but I know a lot more than a lot of vets know about how to feed a healthy diet and I listen to a lot of the best doctors , if your vet wants you to be feeding kibble than that’s a great sign that they don’t know that much about what they’re doing with regards to nutrition,
Almost any kibble you can give your dog will be promoting cancer and disease

Almost certainly carbohydrate related. Wild canines consume practically zero carbs. We know from human nutrition that when you consume fats with carbs, the body will use glucose from carbs first, leaving the fats to circulate in the blood or be stored (often leading to fatty liver). Eliminating carbs will allow the body to burn fats for energy so they don't accumulate. Commercial dog kibble can contain 40% or more carbohydrates. This leads to chronic high insulin levels, insulin resistence, diabetes, and overworked pancreas. Eliminate carbs and vast majority of pancreatitis cases will be resolved. Low fat diets only hide the real problem until it becomes diabetes; shortening life span and leading to high vet & medication bills (and a miserable family member)!

Even a simple blood smear for blood parasite would have been sufficient to save him 😡he had been hunching a lot eating with chronic vomiting loss in weight 26 kgs🙃(from34) but still our vet couldn’t diagnose pancreatitis
Now after iv antibiotics pain killers antacids antiemetic he has recovered but whenever we try something new in his diet another attack occurs so we are sticking to a very bland diet of boiled white rice curd without fat wheat chapati vegetables and simple human biscuits.
Pancreatitis is a b....t! my 2 years old rat terrier developed pancreatitis, she was looking really bad, no moving, shaking, red eyes, no eating anything, vomit, It was very scary. I have no idea what she got initially, then took her to the emergency vet hospital, after 3 days and almost $ 2.000 dollars vet bill she came home still looking weak and sick. She was given 4 antibiotics, painkiller, stomach pills, vomit medication. Sincer she was no eating anything or drinking, I saw someplace in the internet to cook a big pot of water with rice and to feed her the clear rice water. I did that, using a small plastic bottle I did starter to feed her in order to keep her hydrated until she starter to eat again. Believe me, it not easy, 6 months later she is on a low fat diet, I feed her water tuna when she gets tired of eating the same thing.

My puppers vomit looked like soy sauce, my vet said it could be dry blood. 😢

OMG pet people, after reading all these tragic stories I get it !! Vets don't have all the answers and most drugs cause more damage to our pets. Look up Holistic Veterinarians, there's heaps online. My Vet advised Paracetamol pain relief for my dog and ut nearly killed him.
