Higgins said of the feds: “They were sort of testing the waters to see who amongst that group would begin acknowledging, ‘Maybe we should do that, maybe we should plan for an occupation like that.'” “On the inside, you had FBI assets dressed as Trump supporters who knew their way around the Capitol before the doors open. Or else how are you going to get around the Capitol?” Higgins said. “You’ve been there many times, you need a guide,” Higgins said explaining it’s a maze inside the Capitol. As a UK citizen I can tell you that our country and probably the world cannot comprehend a system that allows such an obvious breach of the law to the extent that people died remains unpunished because the main instigator used to be a president. Even more worrying is that most people in the UK think that there is every chance that Trump will be president again in November.

We all have an idea of how the world works, or how we want it to work. Preconceived notions as such. Social media (youtube, insta, twitter) is set up to show you more things you like and engage with. Click on an NFL game highlight, more NFL highlights will populate your feed. Likewise if you're looking for what happened on january 6th with a youtube search, it'll give you the results from fox, cnn and nbc etc. If you click on fox (the alt right) it will end up showing you more fox or alt related videos of this and remove the left leaning ones. Alternatively if you choose nbc/cnn (left), fox will be removed from subsequent suggestions. Centrist options are often sorely lacking, because radicalized opinions generate more emotion, emotion drives more engagement and thus more consumption of content.
Now most people's ideology is something they are attached to emotionally. Most people don't make logical, sound decisions. So the more videos you see of your preferred alignment, the more you agree with them, because these people are largely saying things you were already thinking, you see eye to eye on the big ticket items (the minor things you think are crazy you disregard, it's a big picture thing after all), and because you agree with them and the videos are everywhere they must be true. This cycle continues and continues and you keep getting pushed down this rabbit hole that only shows one side. Before you know it you start agreeing with the little things you disagreed with earlier, if someone shows you a centrist video, or a video from the other side countering what you are saying they are blatantly lying and misconstruing facts (Realisticall all outlets, both left and right are misconstruing facts, or willfully omitting certain information to prove their point and cement their viewpoint). You are now fully indoctrinated and once you are indoctrinated no reason, logic or proof provided by another person who does not share your views will ever convince you. You will just think they (like you, ironically) have been brainwashed.
Couple this with the fact that the majority of the population of first world countries (the US, canada, most of europe) is fairly disgruntled about a variety of things, but usually it is along the lines of not having enough, or bleak prospects for the future (which if you've noticed any political party will blame on the other parties), they have plenty of time on their hands to think things through, most humans are cognitively not made to handle this kind of freedom of thought, we're survivalists, for big picture thinking we prefer to be led, prefer to be told what we should do and what we should think (this really helped us survive in tribal times). In short, most of our brains are fertile soil for this kind of manipulation.
How many people in the january 6 riots do you think would actually identify as seditionists? Most of them actually believe, to their core, that they were doing the right thing. Standing up against corruption and taking back the country from it's evil manipulators. They could never admit they may have been manipulated or were wrong cause that attacks their being, their very core beliefs. Most of them believe they were doing this for the people of the country and that the majority of the people side with them, they can't fathom that they represent a very vocal minority.
Sadly this polarization is not good for society and leads to totalitarianism or authoritarianism (neither one is good). The more polarized someone is, the more likely they are to be outspoken about their beliefs etc. The silent (somewhat centrist) majority is almost never heard, and is therefor. Compromise, empathy and an open willingness to understand and debate opposing viewpoints is a much better option, but i don't see how we ever get back there now :/

Twenty years ago I worked as a summer intern at the Senate and had the privilege of giving tours of the capitol building. I watched the events unfold Jan. 6th as they were happening, and it made me feel sick. Even now, seeing the same halls I know so well filled with such violence makes me feel sick. But seeing the attempts to gaslight the entire country about something we saw happening live just a few years ago, for which there's more and more video evidence of just how depraved this attack was, that makes me angry. The lie is so outrageous, to tell me what I sat here watching for hours never happened, it makes me question either the sanity or patriotism of those spreading it.

So there’s no way Americans, most of which have never been to the Capitol, there’s no way they could come in some random door that gets opened and then get their way directly to the statuary or the House Chamber or the Senate Chamber. Higgins estimates that at least 200 FBI assets were operating in the crowd of Trump supporters at the Capitol on January 6.
