      Everyone says pillars 2 sold poorly compared to 1. But that was immediately after release, could be they've had steady aftersales.
      They are also of course on gamepass for pc (and now I imagine xbox). And gamepass doesn't depend on sales, it's more like a netflix model - the number that matters is sign ups.

    As you mentioned, the load times/crashes were a VERY BIG issue for me in the original game's PS4 release. It got to the point that I was forced to ignore my OCD and I made myself stop going to the living quarters in Caed Nua to organize and store gear because the 6 - 8 loading screens it took to make a round trip from where ever I was on the map coupled with the frequent freezes and crashes during said transitions meant that it would sometimes take me upwards of an hour (and infinite patience) to do such. As a result, I quite literally had to force myself through the last 15 or so hours of my play though just to see how the story ended. Often, I had to talk myself out of dropping the game all together.
    It was NOT an enjoyable experience but I loved the story so I endured it.
    I'm very interested in PoE2, and it's nice to know that in return for the gauntlet I worked through will be repaid by me being allowed to use my character from the last game, but I was truly hoping that the load/crash issues would have been addressed by now. I'm no game designer, but I honestly can't understand why this is an issue that has lingered for so long over 5 years and two games. Is it just that Obsidian needs to have another group handle their ports or is their programming architecture just that poor? Do they not care that this is a persistent issue plaguing their console players/supporters? I just don't get it.

    • @Femtos
      @Femtos 3 роки тому +1

      Completely agree. Same reason I dropped PoE 1 and didn't finish it. I'm a fairly patient gamer but the sheer amount of loading screens and the length of the loading screens harkens back to the PS1 era and that's frankly ridiculous.
      When the game loads for so long that you wonder if the game has locked up on you then you've got some porting/technical issues that require serious addressing, console wise.

    I have a few tips to make peoples experience more smooth on PS4.
    1. Don't play turn based, it's broken. Especially on Poko Kahara.
    2. Just keep 1 manual save file and three auto saves. This actually helps not increase load times.
    3. Clean out your inventory, don't let it get too massive with weapons, armor etc
    4. Poko Kahara again, just finish it as soon as possible. Don't explore on that place. For some reason this place is unstable.
    5. If game starts lag it helps if you relaunch the game. It's not ideal but it's better than lag.

      I love them and their games to, I just wish that they could iron out the game-breaking, corrupts all of your saves at once somehow bugs before releasing it, especially considering all of the solutions the internet has to the problem involves manipulating files that console users don't have access to. Frustrating playing for 20 hours with multiple save files only to realize that none of them will load and you aren't even sure what you did to break them or whether the same thing will happen when you start a new game. Especially considering how much of your playtime is taken up with loading screens to begin with, forcing you to restart the game because of unspecific, nebulous bugs that may or may not repeat themselves at any moment can be...tiring, to put it politely.

    My two cents, from someone playing on ordinary, non-enhanced XB1.
    I bought the XB1 version because my PC is very dated and does not run the game very well in that version. Unfortunately, the performance isn't much better-- frame rate hiccups during combat are the most common issue (one which I also have on PC) plus various small bugs. And, of course, the monstrous loading times-- even my PC for all its issues with the game doesn't have that particular problem. I'm hoping these things get addressed in patches. The real test will be whether the framerate slows to a crawl when you cast big, intense spells like Wall of Fire, which is what happens on my PC. I haven't had a chance to test that situation yet.
    I only have a base model XB1 (not the XB1X) so I suspect the performance *may* be slightly better on the more advanced model. The load times, however, do not sound like they get better. Also, comparing my game on ordinary XB1 to FextraLife's stream of the game on PS4 last week, there are some definite graphical downgrades without the Pro or XB1. Most notably, the non-enhanced consoles disable a lot of lighting effects on torches and the like, meaning that areas overall are much darker and occasionally it is virtually impossible to see anything in specific places like dungeons.
    I would still recommend the game, but believe me that if I had a better PC I would not bother with the console version. The port is serviceable but not great, and has a lot of issues. Still, I'm hoping it will be improved by a patch or two.

      Overall I liked poe 1 better. I agree with all you said it's just that PoE 1 has a stronger story and characters. Poe 2 is by far more polished and has better combat and graphics though, no doubt.

    • @irisdogma8174
      @irisdogma8174 4 роки тому +2

      Gotta disagree with the other poster here, I think the story is just as strong, it just has different strengths and weakness. Won't comment on what as I don't want to spoil, but one of the strengths is the tying in of side stories into the main story; does that really well.
      Graphics wise, For PoE2, they pre-rendered some of the animations, and do post rendering for a surprising amount too (such as environmental reflections, shadows, weather etc). It's a real hybrid of isometric 2d and 3d, without doubt the best looking true isometric game there is. I hope there's a PoE3 because this style never got as much technical advancement as 3d games due to the fall of popularity with publishers between classic and renaissance. With the right technical advancement, it could in some ways be better looking than 3d (in a hybrid, there's less to render in real time, and pre-rendered stuff can be done on commercial grade hardware).

    My biggest problem with PoE was the really long load screens. Especially when you get into the later part of the game where you’re quickly moving in and out of towns and your keep for side quests, then selling and upgrading characters, then moving out again. A 2 hour play session could literally have you sitting through 30 min or more of load screens (I know because I actually timed it once). I hope this one isn’t quite as bad in this .

    • @irisdogma8174
      @irisdogma8174 4 роки тому +1

      Yeah, I think they are a bit shorter on PoE 2. Some loading is unavoidable in a partially 2d game like this, because there are large wads of high res images to load.

      @@Particle_Ghost Well hmm. I mean, I agree with some of those. The based game it's definately less of a dungeon crawler. There's no ten level endless dungeon - something I enjoyed. The game is much larger, in terms of individual areas though, and many of those places have towns, cities, small wilderness, caves/dungeons. There is more exploring, and many smaller areas along with a few big ones (theres a few levels of caves under the main city btw, but it's optional so I think some ight have missed it). There is however a larger multi-level dungeon type set up in one of DLCs (the last one). It's not quite 10 levels but it'll scratch the itch. It scracthed mine/
      I think if you solely play the main campaign and rush through it, you are missing the point - there's numerous side stories one can pick, and they relate to the mainstory, and also npc sidequests. The game doesn't make you do that either, you have to pick a faction and they have side quests. There's a lot of interesting stuff to do, rather than trying to speedrun to the end credits. Technically you can but I have no idea why anyone would choose to.
      That's particularly compounded the three dlcs, which taken together are much bigger than the one you got with PoE1. Individually they are smaller, but there's three of them, so difinately bigger when put together.
      There's lots to love too - the setting is unique, the ship travel is fun (just board rather than do cannon fights), the graphics are the best of any true isometric, the npcs are likeable, have banter, have endings, their own sidequests and romance options and I liked the writing. The main arc does feel a little built up, and I think maybe some people didn't realise there was time to take in more (most rpgs don't have plot timers, and this one doesn't either). I like the end (it's pretty epic), and I particularly liked how all the factions, npcs, and other side stories tie into that.
      I liked it so much, I've played it twice. I've still yet to finish all the expansions. But I said the whole map, and found some interesting side things I wouldn't have otherwise. I didn't finish in five hours in either of my playthroughs - more like a couple of days each time - and as I said, still haven't completed all DLCs. I think the only way to finish in that time would be to google the one way you can shortcut all the faction stuff (key plot). There's a thing you can get that lets you shortcut to the end. Which, to be frank is a bad idea. I got it, and didn't use it to shortcut the plot.
      I did like the big dungeon in 1. But I think with the expansions there's enough here for that.

    • @irisdogma8174
      @irisdogma8174 4 роки тому

      @@Particle_Ghost Oh the other thing it has is a really good AI system for party members (PoE's AI sucked, they improved it a little later, and it still sucked). I feel like the classes feel more meaningful in this too, because of the combat mechanics changes. That said, it's only challenging in some fights on normal difficulty, so if you love that feeling of holy shit I'm going to die in every combat, they have added higher difficulty tiers to be as punishing as you want.
      Pathfinder "kingmaker" is another good game if that's on console. It's a little more in the style of neverwinter nights graphically, set in galorion. The plot is very well written, but boy it's long. On initial release it had insane levels of bugs (they fixed).

    • @irisdogma8174
      @irisdogma8174 4 роки тому

      @@Particle_Ghost I think if you felt the other beamdog games were a bit dated, you might feel the same about NWM. NWM2 was a bit prettier, as was Icewind dale 2 - the two games they didn't remake because they didn't have access to their engines/code.
      POE2's AI is a bit confusing, but there are online guides to help you customize. If it's very slow loading on PS, yeah perhaps just give it time, see if they fix it.
      I'm also meh about DOS games. The lore is pretty meh, and the story okay, the npcs definately boring, and tactical combat can crawl. As two player games, they are awesome. Solo, IDK.
      Wasteland 2 - well I never played that through much like DOS2. The interface is a bit fiddly, it's also tactical/turn based, but the lore/npcs do seem a lot better than DOS IMO.

    The problem i had was the load screens. VS pillars of eternity is has more buildings etc so more load screens, a lot more load screens. When you are told to talk to x and then you have to go to y is is a long series of load screens walking a few seconds to get another load screen and then walk to another load screen. Sometimes you have to figure out where to go so even more load screens. Basically the game is great to me but the load screen was unbearable after a while. Currently hoping next gen console will change this.

    So it is definitely kind of frustrating to play sometimes, but I am 20 hours in, and I am very happy with the game in any way. I've been waiting a lo0ng time, and idc if its rough. I'm still having fun. I do have to say that I still prefer real-time with pause. Like I said sometimes its frustrating, but overall I do prefer it. The game switches my AI settings randomly so hopefully they patch that soon as I like my party to just auto attack so I can micro manage combat hahaha.
    Oh and I did try Turn based combat for a little bit (made a junk character to play the first few hours) and it was nice. It felt like hanging out with a friend that I used to hang out with from high school.

      I mean I agree, but the AI system in PoE2 is pretty good (to the point you barely need to do anything unless it's a tough enemy), and there's always turn based.

      @Samantha Holland even fextralife in this very review suggested not bothering with RTwP if you actually want to experience the combat, only going for it if you're willing to give the reins to the AI.
      Ofc theres some ppl who are going to like it anyways, that's ok not my business.

    How do the game controls compare to the original Pillars of Eternity on console? I found the original game controls poorly explained and I also never mastered them until 70% of the game was complete but now that I have I am fine with it but if it's another totally different control set up....

    • @Fextralife

      It's a different setup and, because there are a lot more options, it was confusing to me and felt overwhelming to start. I got used to it though, so I'd say after the initial pains they are about the same as Pillars 1.

      Thanks for the reply! I feared as much but I think it's going to be worth the headache for the improved graphics and the added voice lines. I have to admit there where times that the reading in POE 1 ended up getting skipped because of impatience with wanting to get on with the gameplay lol.

    • @ancorey25
      @ancorey25 4 роки тому

      I will add that I hope my characters can eventually look cooler then they did in poe 1 with the mismatched gear and low res graphics. Npcs almost always looked cooler. And as shallow as it maybe, when you get an awesome new item from a badass long difficult quest you do want to look the part for that extra satisfaction, not like a crew of hobos.

    Im really upset, I spent $60 for a game that doesn't work. I ran into a game breaking issue. Where essentially your saves wont work. It says something along the lines of how it can't load the next map. Therefore it returns you to the main menu and if none of your saves work then you lost all of your data. This has been an issue since release it seems and has no fixes. So buyer beware I suppose.

    I didn't win the code and I really don't dare to buy it because I think is gonna ends up in game pass. I hope it comes soon though cause I really wanna try it. Pity real time combat is not optimal with a controller cause I think is the way the game is meant to be played. The game wasn't designed for turn based like divinity and only a couple of people worked in the implementation of it into poe2. I've been reading reviews and most agreed that turn based is not fined tuned for this game.
