A cheering salute! 🥂 Great summit view at the top and as always, the final "its cheeseburger time" to bring all the exciting tension to a comforting stop. :)
Guys, the 'chinking of mugs' dates back to mediaeval times when you would hit the mugs together with your host so that some would splosh into each other's container as a sign of trust that neither was poisoned!
I was on Mt Washington (around 6:30/6:40 they mentioned they were using a higher summit’s forecast: I assume that was the nearby Mt Washington with life saving daily weather reports from the Summit observatory) with those 75-95mph winds and 100+ mph gusts a few weeks ago and it sounds bad but really it’s insane. The wind nearly blew us off lions head trail and the 4-6 feet of snow above tree line wasn’t helping but we just barely made it to the summit before 1:45pm, which was the last point that we wanted to be up their because of a steep hike down and the 4:25pm sunset that day
As a bartender, we always cheers those around us first then tap the shot glass on the table/bar before drinking as a second cheers to those who couldn't join us that evening, and for those who are no longer with us. I'm sure there are dozens of opinions but that one always seemed legit to me. Great vid as always guys
This is one of my favorites from you guys. Its great to see two friends sharing these adventures. Congrats on being a dad again Mike. I know its hard to find time to get away but it is important that you do. The same goes for your wife. God bless you both and stay safe. Peace.
Hi, Shawn & Mike 👍🏻👍🏻 Awesome snow camping adventure, wow that was some cold temps, also I was thinking maybe y’all could have build an Igloo if the snow was deep enough you could have stayed much warmer inside the Igloo I would like to see you and Mike maybe do that in a future video. Thanks for sharing, enjoy and have a Blessed Sunday !!! Danny
You mentioned about showing the mac and cheese with spam too many times... I have got to tell you, the food and prep is always something I want to see. That is a major part of my camping desires. Please don't leave that out of your videos.
This episode was really neat. In my mid 20's I had the privilege to train with Solid Rock Outdoor Ministries - they take kids into the mountains for high alpine climbing and hiking. Your snow shelter and bivies brought back some good memories :D
Wow, a nice touch with whiskey in that Minus 15F !! I hope at least it helped to warm up you guys. I have been camping in 0F and it was cold... Great video !
Epic!!! Love the thought process at the beginning and having a secondary options. Shows not to rush in leeroy style when it's that dangerous of conditions. Your videos are turning into movies. Love it! Thanks for sharing
Dude at the beginning when you were talking to Mike that's the same way I talk to my buddy, when he isn't fully into it..love it..winter camping is so much fun..great video..cool bivy set up as well
Glad to see ya make that summit! 3rd time was the charm. I'm amazed you did that with a 15 degree bag. Goes to show how important a good pad(s) is to reflecting back your body heat! Great trip ... loved the views.
So glad to see you and Slippa out for another adventure. Mike, hitting the table heightens the possibility of spillage. Straight down the pie hole for me!
I used to use my Black Diamond Megamid in the winter in the Whites. 9 x 9 floorless pyramid with ski poles and skis in the corners then digging out a sleep bench/trench and cold sump then blocking the “door” with my backpack. Snow shovels are a MUST in the winter. I loved my GT Bivi sack (pad inside so I didn’t slide off it) Now I use 2 pads. Good video! White gas or kerosene is the only way to go in sub-zero temps. Carry extra when you have to melt snow.
Sounds like WWII footage of a German V1 flying over a British city... I had an MSR XGK back in the 1980s. Heavy, but hot and bulletproof. The sound is the fuel hitting the burner plate and igniting in little droplets. The Whisperlite, which I still use in winter, has a different burner head. The XGK had a "splatter plate", I believe it was called.
I know I'm commenting 3 years later but... I bought a SOL emergency tent instead of the bivy. I figured it's essentially the same thing but larger. Mike could probably use that, but use it like a bivy. Another great video! I haven't done any winter trips yet. I'm loading up in UA-cam content and hitting the online shopping hard to get prepped for my first winter overnight this season with my fiance.
ya he did look miserable , but nice to know u stayed warm, guess maybe my mss with i think a 40 below rating will work pretty good. although i may need to stop going to the gym too lol i dont fit so well in it
I’m a “cheers” and then just drink kinda of guy! BTW, I loved the video! Thank you guys so much for going out there and doing this for us. It sure looked cold.
I gotta say - you guys have got BALLS attempting this in those frigid conditions. I'm alot older than you and have done stuff like that in the scouts when I was a teenager, but enjoyed the vid and certainly picked up alot of tips. One of my favorite videos on Syntax77. Thank you so much!
You know you guys made a good point and I had thought I was loosing my marbles. I recently camped just a week or two ago ( temps around 0 F ) and I tried laying up while in my bag ( i have a heavy, -25 bag good for car camping though I do hike with it and pull it on a sled too) and I felt colder! It was just like your buddy claimed, the bag wasn't getting heated up by my body so I was actually colder. I stripped back down to just long underwear and felt massively warmer again so I will never layer up while winter camping again. Trust the bag to do the work for you, so long as it's rated colder than what your sleeping in. I would say everyone should do the experiment. I have a feeling it depends on your bag for sure. I know I can't layer up and stay as warm in mine. It wasn't even close. It really blew my mind because normally when not sleeping, the more layers I put on, of course the warmer I become. It just wasn't the case inside my bag. I can't say I even totally understand that. I was just amazed. I came to the same conclusion your buddy did though, the sleeping bag is designed differently than clothing and it needs your body heat to work correctly. Again, I'm sure the material is going to determine that. TETON Sports Fahrenheit XXL -25F Sleeping Bag Size: 90" x 39" Pack Weight: 10.5 lbs. Temperature Rating: -25˚F Shell: Ripstop Liner: 100% Cotton Flannel Fill: SuperLoft Elite Hollow Fiber
I enjoyed watching your winter trip video with "Iron Mike"👍👍 He beat the cold for this trip and his winter pack! Wow!! He earned the Crown Royal after lugging that pack up the mountain. Cheers and drink!😀 Great Video
Have never thought about the tapping of glasses before taking a drink or tapping of glasses on tables before taking a drink. At age 63, I was not alive in the medieval period, so I have not been accustomed to table-knocking/tapping practice and don’t worry about poison in my drink before I have the first sip. Despite having some Irish and English on my blood, I still haven’t experienced this knocking thing. I grew up in MI, and we just started drinking with or without a “clink” but no “clunk.” So, I guess you can research this or just observe the practice at a bar in order to get more data. Anymore mind-boggling unimportant questions, Mike? How about a puzzling, inquisitive question about mountain hiking? Just kidding. Love your videos, the both of you!
This makes me want a "survival scenario" video. Make a "get home bag" and get dropped off somewhere unfamiliar - meet up with "rescue" two days later. Would be cool to see someone actually using/reviewing some gear meant to keep you alive!
When doing a toast I clink/knock glasses but don't hit a table/bar, etc. And one drink wont hirt you. As a kid when my grandpa would take me ice fishing, unbeknownst to my mom until years later, my grandpa would spike my thermos of hot chocolate with peppermint schnapps. 2 shots in a full thermos. It kept me warm. Lol. My step dad said he did that for him too. Never got tipsy at all. Mind you this was back when parents and grandparents could legally give their kids/grandkids a little tipple. Lol
Thanks for a great video guys,, long ago I was crazy enough to start in the dark at -17 to hike in the White's,, the good part was I was going to Grey Knob.
my hiking buddy hits the table before the drink and now I do too. unless he's not around in which case it goes straight to the mouth after the klink. salud to the comment about ice cold jager on the trail. it is my go to for backpacking. that's how we call the "syreens" before bed.
I'm interested in seeing a more detailed video about your winter clothing set-up and layering philosophy for different temperatures when on the move vs when in camp or taking breaks. What would you wear in 20-30, 10-20, 0-10, and sub-zero degree environments. What if it's snow, freezing rain, fog, windy with the wind chill etc. At what point would you call the trip and not go? Last year I remember a day in winter where it was - 40 degrees below at the base of the mountain and canceled my trip because of the huge risk to frostbite. Lastly- one of the most challenging things that I've come across when winter hiking in the white mountains is that when you're doing work uphill and you are trying to maintain that fine line of not over-heating while simultaneously not freezing. I'm hoping to push my limits this winter but at the same time be as safe as I can about it and it would be interesting to see your take on these topics. I give you guys props. It takes so much effort to film in regular backpacking weather let alone the conditions that you faced for this trip. Hope to see you up in the white mountains again for a winter trip! If you havent done it yet - I highly reccomend the baldface loop on the border of new Hampshire and Maine - open summits some challenging climbing and scenic views and under 12 miles- reccomended going clockwise to get the cliffs out of the way first so you don't have to go down them.
Yeah I don't get the whole cheers and then tap the cup on the table either but all my friends always do it and they give me crap if I don't do it with them. Great video.
I miss hiking in snowstorms, spent so much time alone as a kid exploring the woods behind our home in Vermont. Now living in the Carolinas no such adventures
Always tap the table. I've always done it as its something my dad always did. Original purpose was the settle the stuff out of your beer (before filtered beers we have today) before taking a sip.
Hey Sintax, love the vids and the shots. Been watching for a long while now and I’d really love to see shots of the cheeseburger celebrations. We go through a 1+ hour ordeal with you and I’d love to celebrate with you as well. Don’t have to watch you eat, just some time to be in on the conclusion. Just a thought. I know the celebration is close to home for you all after a good trip.
Awesome sintax77 me and the wife went on our first backpacking trip of 2018 next trip we are gonna follow your trip data for Seneca creek .. u have inspired the both of us to really get out there and have fun
When I winter camp I always bring two stoves. One stove to melt the snow and the other stove to boil the water. I found out the hard way it takes way too long to make water with just one stove.
Just cheers and drink no table. I was in tuckermans in March a few years back and my 100 proof vodka started to get slushy around -23F I love the channel. Thank you
we always touched the table before cheers, in college it was considered party fowl if you didn't and we used to have to start over if someone didn't. Haha i'm not sure if that was just my colleges way but we had students from all provinces and territories in Canada along with many international students i.e. from the auss and Europe. I just assumed it was normal lmao.
I'm gonna make Mike read this post - I think you just gave me the idea for next year's vid. We'll pack in a nice folding table & call it 'Beer Pong Below Zero'.
I'm a bartender and I've always found that tapping the table after a cheers, is like cheering your location. whether your cheering the bar or a mountain. To me its saying thank you to that moment and the place where you are. at least thats how i see it. cheers 'table tap, drink"
sintax77 seems fitting to me on a journey/destination themed channel, showing reverence to where you find yourselves that day, as if to high-five the mountain etc...
The first time I ever drank hard alcohol *everyone* did the table-tap. Maybe its a wisco/midwest thing but I still hold onto it simply because that's how I was taught.
Just glad your back and filming in the mountains again. Please don't listen to the trool's. Make the videos as long or as short as you like. They don't have to watch the whole thing at once. They can watch it in pieces if it's too long for them.
When I go hiking I go for comfort and don't worry about all this super light weight packing. Before I ever go I train with a 60lb bag and get use to caring that much weight. So when I do go and if my pack is under 60 which it usually is only around 25 to 40lbs so I'm good on caring weight. But Mike bag is real loaded and high up in the air. I see he is use to carrying the weight. Love your videos so keep them up
Used the SOL Escape bivy with a 3 season (no rating) bag in a17 degree tent camp out. Worked great with only a tiny hint of condensation at the feet. I’m a believer.
I’ve been doing shots for decades. I’ve never, nor have I seen anyone hit the bar with the glass first. Rookies who aren’t used to hitting a shot of booze will sometimes slam it on the bar afterward to let everyone know it was a personal achievement to get it down. Happy drinking.
Great video (fast turnaround too!) and you guys have really gone totally hard core now sleeping out on the snow! I was in a tent that same night on the other side of the range at Harvard Cabin and it was COLD! I still have a few toes which haven't come back to me yet. The winds were whipping that weekend.....I always carry a Gore-tex bivy for the exact reasons you guys said: in the event of injury or forced night out, its vital in all seasons.
Visibility was incredible, but the windchill was like -60. (I damaged my hands and feet on the high peaks over the years so they go very quickly). I was in an expedition bag and you two were warmer than me!
That was an excellent video! You guys are hilarious together. Hard core all the way. I live an hour from the trail head you guys left from. I know all about the cold from Nephilhime that grips those woods!
We clink the glasses and say Skol. and that means cheers, good health, salute, or a toast in Swedish Norwegian Danish and Icelandic. Never heard of pounding it on the table.
i got that bivy the green one to narrow on the shoulders ..many people complain ..that's to narrow .. what crazy they brought out a new one the pro but they didnt listen to customers and made the same size
Beside Sarah I love mike being in your videos. You both keep each other grounded. And your both hilarious.
Never seen you both so reluctant to get started on a trip.
A cheering salute! 🥂 Great summit view at the top and as always, the final "its cheeseburger time" to bring all the exciting tension to a comforting stop. :)
Thanks, KC. Cheers to you as well!
Guys, the 'chinking of mugs' dates back to mediaeval times when you would hit the mugs together with your host so that some would splosh into each other's container as a sign of trust that neither was poisoned!
Now that’s cool
Nothing says brotherhood like carrying a glass bottle of crown to the mountains for your buddy. Love it!!
All Things Out Doors worst thing in the cold is alcohol
@@johningle8439 Yeah, "by the book" but let's be real, unless you're in a proper survival situation, it's amazing to have out there.
Rescue dogs carried small barrels of rum under their necks attached to their collar to provide energy and help thin the blood (rum) ?
Now that's true friendship to surprise your boy with a bottle of his favorite flavor that u rucked miles into the woods for him
Lol at "We could Bear Grylls it." Shots fired!
"2 Lunatics in the Sub-zero Woods"= Best video yet! You guys are truly inspirational!
Dude! That wind 29 minutes sounds Identical to heavy surf/wave action on the shore of a beach. Amazing! Dynamic!
This is one of my favorites from you guys. Its great to see two friends sharing these adventures. Congrats on being a dad again Mike. I know its hard to find time to get away but it is important that you do. The same goes for your wife. God bless you both and stay safe. Peace.
YESS!!! Mike is back, with Sintax77....in the White Mountains!
Yea, trail slipper is back
NH, home to the highest recorded winds ever! You guys are nuts! Hahaha.
You are straight up in a survival mode. Nothing to mess around with. Awesome video!
49:52 Lol this is why I love videos with Mike.
33:02 Had me cracking up because I thought Steve was standing on a slack-line. Great video guys.
Brian Marquis 🤔🤔🤔🤔......
😅😅😅😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🖒👏

Frank Fox do your own camp cooking
This episode was really neat. In my mid 20's I had the privilege to train with Solid Rock Outdoor Ministries - they take kids into the mountains for high alpine climbing and hiking. Your snow shelter and bivies brought back some good memories :D
The best vids are you and Mike, winter camping! Thanks for this one, hardcore!
Wow, a nice touch with whiskey in that Minus 15F !! I hope at least it helped to warm up you guys. I have been camping in 0F and it was cold... Great video !
I just wanna say, you do one hell of a job with these videos. I've been a long time fan and love what you do. Keep it up homie
Thanks, Kyle! :)
Epic!!! Love the thought process at the beginning and having a secondary options. Shows not to rush in leeroy style when it's that dangerous of conditions. Your videos are turning into movies. Love it! Thanks for sharing
Great video. I love watching the trips with Mike.
Dude at the beginning when you were talking to Mike that's the same way I talk to my buddy, when he isn't fully into it..love it..winter camping is so much fun..great video..cool bivy set up as well
That's some real cold weather hiking and camping. You guys are crazy! I love it lol
Awesome trip and vid. Love your trips to the whites. I hope to get there some day. Thanks for sharing!
The "Percolate" bit was hilarious. The other term you guys use is, "Un-thaw".....think about it.
When those stoves are bumping (pulsing) all I could think of is Schartzenager yelling “Get to the Choppa!”
I think all the liquid fuel stoves do it to some extent. My dragonfly does it too. Probably from the temperature variation when the fuel vaporizes.
My favorite episode by far, you guys are awesome!
Awesome. You need to start including the cheeseburger footage t finish these.
Scott Willingham agreed!
But there _are no_ lions in the Scottish Highlands...
Excellent video!....by the way Andrew Skurka totally agrees with wearing all clothes in sleeping bag.
Great video!!!! You need to bring your friend more often!!!!
Good show. Your plan worked out well, as did the sleeping arrangement. Impressive.
What the trailkillas pack looks like it's 100lbs you guys are killing yourselves for this one!
Great video Syntax!! Mike looked miserable the entire time.
vki tmg no u
ya he did look miserable , but nice to know u stayed warm, guess maybe my mss with i think a 40 below rating will work pretty good. although i may need to stop going to the gym too lol i dont fit so well in it
Have fun storming the castle boys. I ll meet you back here at super 8.
You guys are beasts! I've tented in -4 deg. F., which was cold enough. Good job!
Wow. What a trip. I had to turn up the heat. Did miss your sleeping arrangements once you were set. Missed the 3am checkin. I loved this!
Looks like a major blast, I’ll be hitting the trails this weekend and filming the trip as well. Should be a great time. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks, Dredd. Good luck on your trip!
Enjoying the longer videos
This is my favorite trip video you have done in a while. Not that I haven’t enjoyed the others but this was great.
I’m a “cheers” and then just drink kinda of guy! BTW, I loved the video! Thank you guys so much for going out there and doing this for us. It sure looked cold.

Loved "insulation minute"... lolol! You guys crack me up. Me and my buddies walk around saying "yeah man". You've creaked monsters.
I’ve never hit the table after a cheers or saw anyone else do it. NW Wisconsin here. Cool video, appreciate your channel
Loved this! Old school sintax77 video with traillkilla :D
Cheers and drink it. Never saw anyone hit the table after cheers.
I enjoyed watching your winter trip video with "Iron Mike"👍👍 He beat the cold for this trip and his winter pack! Wow!! He earned the Crown Royal after lugging that pack up the mountain. Cheers and drink!😀 Great Video
Yes, Crown Rroyal is the best . My fav. Good choice.

"Cheers" is tapping cups, shot glasses, bottles, etc., and nothing more - no table tap involved. Loved the video. Thanks for posting it.
Enjoyed every minute of it. Thanks guys.
See Erik Normark’s vids about how to sleep outside in the winter overnight. You also need to carry a couple extra tarps to string up as wind breaks.
Thanks for a great video guys,, long ago I was crazy enough to start in the dark at -17 to hike in the White's,, the good part was I was going to Grey Knob.

Always tap the table. I've always done it as its something my dad always did. Original purpose was the settle the stuff out of your beer (before filtered beers we have today) before taking a sip.
You guys and my buddies would get along just fine. Nice "SHOT". Oh and no table on the cheers.
Hey Sintax, love the vids and the shots. Been watching for a long while now and I’d really love to see shots of the cheeseburger celebrations. Awesome sintax77 me and the wife went on our first backpacking trip of 2018 next trip we are gonna follow your trip data for Seneca creek .. u have inspired the both of us to really get out there and have fun
That's awesome to hear! Enjoy it :D
Great friendship. Keep exploring and enjoy the crown boys.
Never heard hitting the table on a cheer before 1st time . CHEERS !!!
When I winter camp I always bring two stoves. One stove to melt the snow and the other stove to boil the water. I found out the hard way it takes way too long to make water with just one stove.
Excellent idea! Especially when there's two people going to split the load anyway.
Just cheers and drink no table. I was in tuckermans in March a few years back and my 100 proof vodka started to get slushy around -23F

casually throwing it out there that you can get blow up beer pong tables lmao!
I'm a bartender and I've always found that tapping the table after a cheers, is like cheering your location. whether your cheering the bar or a mountain. To me its saying thank you to that moment and the place where you are. at least thats how i see it. cheers 'table tap, drink"
You could build a quinzie and be warm and cozy.
you guys need to get a pulk sled you would be alot happier on these winter trips lol thanks for posting it guys
Cheers + table = here's to you and here's to here, our gathering place, and yes I do that here in MN
Ah, good explanation. I like that.
sintax77 seems fitting to me on a journey/destination themed channel, showing reverence to where you find yourselves that day, as if to high-five the mountain etc...
I love the long videos. It helps me get my fix when I can't do it.
Yayyyyyy. Mikes back
hey guys, good content. on the cheers thing..if you're not banging the table, you have a ways to catch up with your friends.
Great adventure.
Ouch! Hope you get that feeling back soon, man. That was one hell of a weekend to hit up My Washington. I bet it was an awesome experience though :D
Visibility was incredible, but the windchill was like -60. (I damaged my hands and feet on the high peaks over the years so they go very quickly). I was in an expedition bag and you two were warmer than me!
Ahhh kicked out of the house again! Yes!
If you guys like the regular Crown, Crown Reserve is above and beyond. Must try!
Love it! Y'all are awesome. The wrongness of the cracked me up. Keep up the awesome work and come to Georgia. I know it's far but oh so pretty.
I slept in a bivy in all weather conditions for 8 years in the Marines.
Did you have a tarp too?
i got that bivy the green one to narrow on the shoulders ..many people complain ..that's to narrow .. what crazy they brought out a new one the pro but they didnt listen to customers and made the same size

Mt Crawford, White Mountains, New Hampshire.
I NEED that Canoe Tennessee shirt!
