Barbour Wax Jackets + How to Re-Wax a Barbour waxed coat

  • Barbour waxed jackets are as iconic as they are popular and stylish especially here in Britain. Designs include country classics, iconic biker jackets style and chic vintage looks in a range of finishes, from heavy and tough to antique and distressed.
My Barbour wax jacket needed re-waxing. So I got a pot of wax from Barbour and waxed my Barbour Beaufort myself. I purchased a pot of Barbour Thornproof dressing aka wax from a Barbour store in London. And then melted the wax and applied it to the coat.

Thanks, Robert. My wife and I reproofed my Barbour Beaufort jacket this morning here in Boston (USA) . We were a bit apprehensive but thanks in great part to your tutelage it was a great success. We are at the point now where it's hanging in our back hall to dry overnight. Looks like a moderately warm day today so by tomorrow we should be done. Visiting London in October for first time since the pandemic. I will likely wear it then. Thanks again.

London sights and the winding way to the wax is great!
I have a leather Barbour Bushman for 20+ years and not a rip or stain anywhere despite years of use. Great leather patina too. A waxed cotton Bushman too.
Can't beat a Barbour for quality, patina and longevity.

When I re wax my Barbour motorcycle jacket and trousers I generally put the wax on heat it with the (wife's) hair dryer shh and hang them in a warm place overnight, THEN I warm them again to remove excess wax after it has had all night to soak in, just a slightly different approach to reach the same end.

Or you can make your own bars of wax. 40% Parrafin 40% Beeswax 20% mineral oil. Melt in a double boiler or in a metal bowl over boiling water and pour into soap molds. I rub on in sections and use hair dryer on Med heat on high setting.
Let hang for day or two for soft beautiful finish
For a tougher wax finish use 90% beeswax and 10% parrafin.

Rewax yourself....it's easy .. satisfying and cheap .you can put it on thick for a vintage look or thin.depending how you like it ... top bonus being..you keep the sponge you were taking off with along with the 1 you applied with.. when it starts to lose that sheen...polish with the sponge. It's amazing the SHINE you can get on pocket flaps .stormflaps .prestud strip..to keep the jacket looking more"built up"n shiny for 6mth? Like a new wax...top tip .thank me later...keep building that shine up.

Mate make your own it's so easy and way way cheaper than the 10 quid plus they charge for a tiny tin .
You can buy 2kg of beeswax online for around 20 pound , all you need is take say 100grams of grated beeswax and equal amounts of olive oil . Melt beeswax in a bain marie and slowly add olive oil when it's all melted. You now have a large tin amounts worth for next to nothing. I use that to waterproof a load of gear it works just as well .
Also to get a better finish after its dried a little on the coat , use a soft bristled shoe brush in circular motions and straight where there's stitching to just get a little of the excess off the top that leaves that visible layer.

Hey Robert thank you for this video it is very informative for waxing a Barbour jacket. I wanna ask something about color of the Barbour Jackets, in this video your jacket looks not shiny, matte color which very good looking for me but on barbour web site or other web images this jakets (Bedale,Beaufort,Ashby) looking very shiny, waxed,it's like kind a wet or oily, I don like this kind of seems, are there any different models for matte or shiny we can choose. Secondly discolorization of some part of waxed jacket can fixed with waxing. Thank for your answers, and sorry for poor Engilish.

I love my Barbour Jacket because when its pissing down with a wind in my direction and i'm out walking the dogs over Ventnor Downs on the Isle of wight it keeps me dry plus if you look after a Barbour wax jacket it will last for ages . love the fact its tough , good pockets and when it wet i can hang it up in a dry room and it will dry off in a couple of hours.
Rob your Video was informative on how to do a re wax but surely Questions have to be asked why you wear one ? looking at what people and the cloths they were wearing, suits, Tshirts ect
Please tell me you Didn't go on the Underground looking like an extra from Emmerdale ? No please !
Talking As a 55 year old guy who has a few more miles on the clock then you do.
Like why would you wear one in London ? you dont get wet in London as there are shelters of Description Everywhere !
having lived in for Walthamstow- Chingford, Barking and Chingford for 40 years and if i still did i would pick up a North Face, Super dry jacket or something similar Barbour Jackets look Shit ....and im no dedicated follower of fashion maybe i'm out outta touch .
