@@janedarc7731 Washington did pull off some miracle escapes while leading the army & set the best example when he gave up power.
To be fair to England, the British had made the Proclamation of 1763 to keep the colonists off of the Native's land. This also protected their fur trade. The British sent troops to America to make sure the Proclamation was followed, which they didn't really since they were stationed on the coast, and to serve as protection from Native attacks. England was broke after the war and they had the extra burden of housing, feeding, and paying for the troops in America. They thought the colonies should help pay down the war debt since the war benefited them. While England should've been able to handle the situation better over the next several years - America did overreact to some extent. They had conspiracy theories that the Stamp act (Townsend Acts, etc) was a sign that England was going to take their freedoms and make them slaves. Also, you have to remember that all colonies were founded with the economic theory of Mercantilism at that time. It states that the colonies exist for the benefit of the mother country.
Colonists considered themselves British but they weren't at that point. America needed to be independent and without Washington, the revolution would have probably ended at the very start.

Then as a portrait artist and sculptor, you really need to see Jean-August Houdon's ORIGINAL life cast of Washington's face to see how he altered it to become the false image we know today. This was a very common practice of the time: to re-imagine a famous person's face into an ideal and Washington was no exception to that rule, even to the point of one sculptor famously posing Washington as a Greek God (complete with an inaccurate toga) in a statue that stood under the Capitol dome for nearly a century. Revisionist history is nothing NEW but is always corrosive when it comes to being an accurate record of our past, either distant or today.

The fog was indeed supernatural intervention from Jesus. Washington was a devout Christian that prayed daily for guidance and protection. The Native Americans Washington battled called him the man that couldn't be shot because every bullet would seem to miss him as everyone and everything was shot around him, despite Washington being their main objective. Again, God's protection.

@@mnp7922 It’s absolutely horrible that anyone owned slaves or allowed anyone else to own them. So what do you propose? Remove our founding fathers from history books, even though life and society was completely different from what we know?
Honestly, as a female, pretty much every generation of males until well into the 20th century treated females pretty atrociously, too, refusing to give them the most basic rights and basically giving men ownership over women, refusing them the right to own property, allowing men to physically abuse or rape their spouses, etc. That would include every founding father and most likely every president, inventor, businessman, clergyman, educator, etc. But I can still appreciate the positive things most of them did to make life and society better, regardless, despite how they were indoctrinated by every part and every level of society.
If you and I were raised at that time in that environment (1700s), we would both be a lot more like them. And it makes me wonder how awful you and I will look to future generations who will be horrified by our behavior or acceptance of something we think is normal or tolerable that is imprinted in our brains because of where and when we were born.
I think we need to learn about the people who were important in positively shaping society despite their handicap in being born at a time very unlike our own, especially when they chose to change things to make them better, anyway. Nothing wrong with teaching about how George Washington worked incredibly hard to gain our independence as a country and to shape our government and society into something better. Also nothing wrong with teaching that he, very unfortunately, also owned slaves and why.

It doesn’t diminish the horrors of slavery, and it isn’t wrong to finally get people to think about the magnitude of injustice that half the population has suffered throughout humanity. Appreciate how you bring historical persons to today's contextual world! These were ordinary individuals that have been made into legends. Seeing the modern interpretation of what they may have looked like brings history to life. Thank you.

Fabulous. I'll bet that is just what Washington looked like. A charismatic man who was truly a legend in his own time would almost certainly have been handsome. Thank you.

Your history narrations are on par with your facial reconstructions. Both are fascinating and engaging. Brilliant works as always.
