Just bought my first kit, never played before in my life. Wasn't sure how the Hi-Hat was supposed to be configured. This video helped me out a lot. Thanks so much!!! Drum on my friends!
Hey Simon, its going great. I'm having a lot of fun drumming! UA-cam is wonderful to help set things up correctly, tune and of course Drumo for training.Take care my friend ;)
As somebody new to this whole game, the first thing I noticed about drum world is that there are never any instructions for anything, ever. The method you show is what I figured out independently, but now I know I'm doing it the right way, and that makes me happy. Thank you, kind sir!
Very helpful video I bought my Tama kit 6 years ago and only played them 3 times I had a very bad year in 2016 I had numerous seizure and was doliagnosed with lupus and crohns disease all of this in the same year lost my job my house was foreclosure and my car got repoded couldn't work any longer disability took me close to 3 years to approved so I've been in total remission now for 4 years life is great for me now I set up my drums last week and I totally forgot how to do the hi hats after playing for years before my sicknesses due to my seize activity lost my cognitive memory so this vide helped out alit thank and thank God for making me better ❤❤❤❤❤
After watching several other videos that were so fast and confusing, I was so thankful to find someone who did great instructions! My son is in business now!!
I've been playing guitar for over 20 years now and decided to learn the drums because it always looked like so much fun and I thought it'd be pretty cool to be able to record my own drum tracks. I missed the feeling of doing something for a while which you think was correct then having someone who knows their stuff show you how you can do it better and it completely changes everything. Like a revelation. It could be the smallest detail that makes the world of difference. This video absolutely did that for me. Thanks so much for posting.
As an old guitar player ( Which makes me a frustrated drummer😂 ), I have always wanted a complete working drum set in my house. I bought one! Semi professional grade Paiste symbols all the way around… this video was very very easy to demystify the high hat set up! Thank you!
You are a lifesaver! The instructions with my entry-level drumkit were garbage, and since I never have played drums I would not have been able to set the Hi-Hat up.
This video was amazing I couldn’t believe that my hi hat was set up wrongly this is a great video for beginners foreal awesome video straight to the point.
The video mentions that cymbals should never touch metal; however, this is exactly what is happening when a top hi-hat is held in a normal clutch assembly. Over time this can cause wear on the hole in the top hi-hat, potentially changing its sound. My personal preference is to fit a piece of rubber tubing over the screw thread so that it finishes above where the bottom nut will sit when full tight, so that the upper hi-hat is protected from contact with metal in the same way that a normal cymbal would be.
I was wondering the same thing. Seems like a problem that should have a manufacturer's solution already. Would you mind sharing what kind/size of rubber tubing you use? Any additional instructions you can provide would be appreciated.
@@emrahercancakir To be honest I really don't remember the detail, I bought my current kit back in 2007 so I've only done it once since then, and I don't remember where I got the tube from, the only thing I really remember is that it was tight enough that I had to essentially screw it on, and it's still there now. I guess you can experiment, even a cut-down plastic cymbal holder might do the job.
@@papalazzzaru Thank you for the quick response, especially 8 years after your original post :) I did try a cymbal sleeve but the inner diameter was too small. My best option for today was to use a shrink tube. The installation worked great and there does not seem to be any adverse effect on the tone. Thanks again!
I admit it: As a completely new drummer, I was baffled by the Hi Hat Clutch, when I unpacked my brand new drum set. Shame on Gretsch for not including instructions with their Energy (beginner) kit! This video was exactly what I needed. And I was very impressed with the narrator's stentorian voice and superb elocution. Well done and thank you!
This is why I love UA-cam. Thx for the easy to understand instructions. I always forget how my hi hat works even after years of drumming cuz I don't practice regularly. That's about to change.❤
Thanks for making this video. Got my daughter a drum kit but as a guitarist/pianist, I honestly had no clue how to set the high hat up, I knew the basics on the set up but the HH was aggravating me.
That was brilliant. Thank you so much. My hi-hat is now ready to rock with the rest of the drum kit. Great video - awesome step by step instructions. Thanks you
I am an electronic kit drummer, and every time I went to play somewhere and the hi hat wasn't installed it was a complete nightmare. This video is very helpful
I know that I'm really late to this video and no one will probably never see this but thanks man. When I was setting up my first ever kit this video helped me so much when i could set up anything but my high hats. Much love man, keep it up!
I used to configure my clutch just like this. I hit my hats hard. After years of the bottom nut back-spinning and coming loose, which frees the top hat from the clutch completely, I took one of the thinner locking nuts and moved it to the bottom- problem solved. Finger tight is enough and you’ll still need pliers to break it loose. Also- experiment a bit with the tension between the pads on the top cymbal: tighter grip=tighter sound, looser grip=looser sound. There’s also the angle adjustment screw beneath the washer. It’ll angle the bottom hat so that when you clap them it’ll eliminate the air dam which will deaden the clap. You can also play with the direction of that angle up- towards you or away, as well as the depth of the angle. There’s a lot to setting them up, but it’s all really simple. Experiment with it and you’ll find that sweet spot you’re looking for
This was really terrific. I thought I was going to have to bring my hi hat to the music store and I dreaded being outed as someone who didn't get it..this was so helpful; thank you.
Who ever made this video, should do it and get paid for it. Reminds me off the eduction videos one would watch in school, or training for a job. Excellent video!!! :)
Thanks I was confused why my new hihat sounded weird. This video taught me that there's a top and bottom cymbal. Which makes sense... shows why I shouldnt just go out and buy random things😅
not necessarily. the higher that you have the cup that holds the bottom cymbal positioned the lesser the amount of travel there will be that remains available in terms of the rod upon which the upper cymbal is affixed.
Thank you so much for this video. The singer of my band bought my daughter a drum set for her birthday and the instructions that came with it weren't very clear 😅 this helped a lot.
Thanks for this easy to understand and informative video. I watched this because my upper cymbal kept loosening and now I realize it was due to my wrong assembly.
thank you you're the best in battery mounting, it's clear and we understand everything because you explain well and thanks to you I managed to reassemble my hi-hat so thank you dixondrumtube 😊😜
This was a great tutorial for beginners! My only ‘cringe’ moment….the top cymbal is unprotected from ‘key holing’ ….I always slide some thin rubber shrink wrap over those sharp threads….to protect the hole in the top hat.
ThIS HELPED SO MUCH MY HI HAT WASN'T WORKING FOR ABOUT A YEAR AND I FOUND OUT ITS BECAUSE THE CLUTCH WASN'T TIGHTENED/THE CYMBALS WERE ON OPPISITE SIDES
it's nice to see that Anthony Bourdain has a variety of interests. Anyway now I know how to put that clutch thingy to good use - thank you very much. I can stop using cling film and masking tape.
not a critique of your lesson, just something that has always made me mad. you even stated no 'metal on metal' but all clutches are metal so when cymbal moves, it slowly maybe very slowly creates cracking or keyholing of expensive cymbals by rocking against the clutch threads.. that clutch is actually one of the worse ones. it has threads all the way with no smooth spot. fyi to everyone, i use multiple layers of electrical tape over the spot where top cymbal sits on clutch. replace tape every so often.
Man, my thoughts exactly. Another thing that made me mad in my early days was the lower screw falling down while playing, leaving the upper cymbal down. One day I took one of the upper screws and put it under the top hat to counter the normal screw there. To me it makes way more sense like that and I use this method for more than 20 years now. Good thing is that you can easily adjust the tension of the top cymbal one-handed by just turning the remaining upper screw.
ive played drums for about 7 years and the next time i set up the hi hat will probably be the first time ive ever done it correctly lmao (for reference, ive just kinda winged it before when setting up drums and its been fine, i also do a lot of my playing on the kit at the venue or at the practice space, so i rarely have had to set it up)
Brilliant video .. could u also do a video on the mechanim of the rods of a hi hat stand.. as in the connection with the pedals etc etc. I had a nightmare when i was taking my hi hat stand apart and all the rods , nuts , washers n flets.. all just fell off. It took me days to try and understand the working of the stand . That too it was a simple Chandler hi hat stand. I can imagine the technical / mechanical madness in the higher end stands
I have a virtually identical clutch on my Sonor kit. Difference is there is a section in the middle of the threaded shaft that has no thread. The bottom knurled nut will travel to the limit of the lower thread. Above that sits the lower felt, then top cymbal, upper felt, the two counter locking thin knurled nuts and the clutch lock. I find it strange that there is a plastic sleeve to protect the lower cymbal but the top cymbal is subjected to metal contact, especially if you set the top cymbal loosely. I have actually wrapped insulating tape on the cymbal contact area to protect the top cymbal but it needs frequent replacing
@@smokingred5813 if it were me i would start off with merely tightly winding a few rounds of electrical tape around the spot in question and then reinstall the top cymbal with the desired stiffness or looseness and then maybe take a look at it again in a couple of weeks to ensure that the electrical tape buffer did not get chewed through (i suspect it will not have). the ideal thing, of course, is if you could obtain a plastic or nylon sleeve of the appropriate diameter and slide it over the piece in question before placing the upper cymbal. (sleeve or collar similar in idea to those that you will find on your cymbal stands and serving to prevent your cymbals from so-called "keyholing').
