the introduction in this video is by both presenters using "Io sono" yet Italians never say that. They may say "sono" or "chiamare" as in "Mi chiamo". Is this an attempt at spelling it out for us to understand the hidden parts of spoken Italian?

Ciao 👋 Italians do use both "io sono" or "mi chiamo" when they introduce themselves - we normally start our podcasts with with sentence 😀

Very helpful and thorough. But I am still a bit confused. Why is scusi formal and scusa informal?

Yes, I would think it's the other way around (scuso, scusi, scusa).

Ciao 👋 That's an interesting question!
The reason why scusa is informal (tu) and scusi is formal (Lei) is to do with the imperative. Both of these verbs, in fact, are not in the indicative but are in the imperative, which is a verbal tense we normally use to give commands or instructions. An -ARE verb like scusare has different endings for this tense: it's -a for tu, and -i for Lei.
We know this can be confusing, but just remember that the imperative is different from the indicative 🙂
