KAOS - is the most awesome, radio station handle. Me and my friend were talking about all the good bands we discovered listening to community/college radio. I was in the foothills of Denver when I first heard a station that played a lot of 2nd gen hardcore/punk, golden-era industrial, European indie rock such as New Model Army and Chin Chin, 2nd gen. hip hop such as Public Enemy -pretty sick music for the late 80’s. (I recorded as much as I could on cassette tapes on my lil ghetto blaster) The timing was good too, 3 hrs. from 9 to midnight so I could just barely pick up the little college station as AM radio-waves travel far at night. During the day I couldn’t pick up that station for shit. I knew my friend a few years older, also lived in the sticks, but around Tacoma, so I was wondering if she could pick up KAOS -alas she couldn’t remember, but did pick up a few different community stations. Listening to that station with my young mind was so crucial to my appreciation for underground music, I would actually go on to DJ for a little while at the local community station and got booted for playing a punk song that dropped an F-bomb, I was 14, introducing punk to kids that heard nothing but ButtRock on the Friday night show. They loved it too! When you are used to the regular old FM-TV with the slick snake oil-polished production, that further removes the listener from the artist. Then you hear ANY song from Misfits Walk Among Us played from a tape recorded from a record. Or the romantic teen Descendents pop-punk. Or Beat on the Brat played off the radio stations own vinyl or the psychosexual Cramps. Later on, I would find a few Unwound tapes at the thrift store and love ‘em from first listen, love their spit-shined production and they’re on the KRS label, and now to hear them play they’re new record live on they’re local community/college radio station. I dig!

Beautifully obnoxious! Of all the bands from the 90's that I never got to see live, why did it have to be Unwound? Truly heartbreaking!

She took my ticket and talked to me and my buddy at a show back in the day and I totally blushed out hard. She's gorgeous.

True punk rock is barely being able to hear the vocals.

For the most part that’s true unless in the rare case you have a sound sorcerer that can keep the volume of the music’s instruments at max levels but not interfere with the vocals at the same level. On recording’s it still takes someone with skill. Live, it seems nearly impossible. I watched a live show of a very loud Garage Punk band Ex-Cult at the Hi-Dive in Denver. Mic’d drums two normally cacophonous guitars at least one being played with heavy reverb. A singer with the experience of singing in a hardcore punk band. Live, a lot of the singers words get buried, but at the Hi-Dive show the sound guy lowered the guitars enough that you could hear the vocals/lyrics easily. Granted it wasn’t at sorcery level because the impact/volume of the guitars was sacrificed, but it was a nice change to be able to discern the lyrics, which were dope!
