Speech-Language Pathologist Carrie Clark shows you how to teach a child to say the /f/ sound from start to finish.
The approach I'm going to show you today is considered an articulation approach, which means you will start by teaching the child to say the sound by itself, like "ffff", then you work on the sound in syllables, like "fuh, foh, foo". After that, you work on the sound in single words like "fan, fix, off", phrases , and then sentences. Once you've done all that, then you work on helping your child say the sound in conversational speech.
Step One: Say the Sound in Isolation
The most important step of this is simply saying the sound by itself. This is where I see the most people get stuck.
How to say the /f/ sound:
bite bottom lip
blow
*Try inverted if trouble with teeth.
Tips for getting a good one:
you hold their lip
they hold their lip
try it in a mirror
put some peanut butter on lip and have them scrape it off with teeth
Do this until they can say it 80% in isolation
Step Two: Say it in Syllables
Step Three: Say it in Words
Step Four: Say it in Phrases/Sentences
Step Five: Structured Conversation
Step Six: Correction and reinforcement for conversational speech

Thank you for this, from the bottom of my heart.
I am a first year SLP student in Canada and we watched this video in class today. It was extremely helpful, along with a few of your other videos for teaching other sounds. Thanks for these awesome resources they are so helpful!!
You are my angel! I am an elementary teacher/tutor working with a child with speech challenges and you have given me the confidence to help. Thank you so much
This is just what I was looking for to support a child I'm working privately with. Will definitely recommend and use again. Thanks
You are a true angel for posting this info for free!
I’m 30 and this helps me daily ! Thank you
Thanks so much for this. I’ve been trying to get my son to be the F sound for ages. With the covid-19 all our assessment were pushed back.
This is very clear and helpful. Thank you!
Thank you for your resources online. They are so helpful!
You are so welcome!! Glad you like them!
Really helpful. I’ve been trying to help my son do the f sound for months and found your video. Also you look like kerry off of homeland in this video (Claire Danes) 😉
Absolutely love your videos and resources on the website Carrie!! thank you so much for putting all this content out there to help others. I'm mum of 4 1/2 yr old twin boys and I've been looking for ways to help them with some sounds that they're missing and your resources are perfect and make the process of helping them so much less stressful! thank you again
Oh that's wonderful! I'm so glad I can help! Keep in mind that sometimes it's harder to work on these things with "mum" than it is with a speech therapist. Personally, I can't get my kids to work with me on their speech errors (unless it's for a UA-cam video!) so I rely on my colleagues to give them therapy. If these strategies don't end up being enough, make sure you ask your doctor about finding a speech and language therapist near you! I know here we have free or reduced cost programs through the government where families can get services. Best of luck!
Thank you very much. So helpful.
Am happy to use your resources !!!!!!!!!!!!
S o helpful!! Thank you.
Yes you are damn correct...
This how we actually learn to utter and then to speak fluently
I was directly jumping on to the last step that is practicing word at the beginning,in the middle and at the end
So why I wasn't getting the grip over this.
Thanx a ton for evoking my memory now can surely learn very fast
I request you take practice of this steps through UA-cam live session that will be great.....and i am really looking forward to it.
Hi Carrie! I love your videos and resources, they are very helpful. I'm currently working with a 4 year old on producing the /f/ sound in syllables. I've been working with him for almost a year now and still not much progress has been made. If I model /f/ in a syllable ("fa") the child will produce /f/ in isolation and then produce /b/ in the syllable ("f-ba"). I've already verified that he can auditorally distinguish between my productions of /f/ and /b/ in syllables. Any suggestions?
Thk u very informative
These videos are so helpful for teaching my child, thank you!
Great video! I work with young children 3-5 and the problem we have is that some of the children aren't ready to recognise the written letter so the syllable phase is difficult. Is there a way to carry out an activity focussing on producing the /f/ sound with syllables without them having to recognise the letters themselves when written down?
omg thank you
Great video! For /f/ syllables we say Fe Fi Fo Fum like a giant. We watch a small video clip cartoon =)
Love this idea ♥️
Any tips for child with underbite? Or same approach? Thanks!!
Could you make a video for sound for M or word Ma please
Hi Carrie, SLT here in the UK. I have a 5;9 year old child who is stopping /f/ --> [t]. We're at the eeeaaarly articulation stage. Top teeth 'bite' the bottom lip. That's the stage after 2 weeks that we're at. Already doing the things you have suggested. Talk about the articulators. Using a mirror. Copying the adult model. Fine. BUT - when we add air flow, the mouth and cheeks are slack, and the air escapes laterally out the sides of the mouth. I am teaching "tight" vs. "loose and floppy" to get him to tighten his mouth so the air escapes medially and downwards. He just doesn't get it. Any additional suggestions?
Here in the UK we are advised not to correct our kids but to repeat the word correctly, overpronouncing the letter they mispronounced,, seems to me your way is way better, thank you 💕
I've worked with some GREAT speech and language therapists in the UK and I know they have access to strategies like this, as well! You can always seek out a professional in your area for more suggestions if this isn't enough. Best of luck!
@@CarrieClarkCCCSLP thank you
i work with preschoolers 3-4 year olds. i cant get past word levels, is this typical.
My Google home keeps thinking i say 'three' instead of 'free'..
I am so frustrated. My 4 yo can pronunciate the F, he can even say words that ends in f like of, elf, but CAN NOT start a word with f, he replaces it for T, like instead of saying four will say tour.
I feel you mom 😅😅😂😂 same I hear sun instead of fun
Do you know where is the trend of saying the F sound by completely covering the bottom lip with upper teeth coming from? I see this more and more often and it seems like a plague invading social media videos .
Four year old kid pronunce f as p
