I grew up at the beach in Muizenberg during the 60's 70s and 80s. Those were the days of real powerful surf - waves tumbling you underneath the bathing boxes, surfers had to be separated from bathers due to accidents. You would stagger out of the water with sand dragging your costume off😁. When we returned in the 2000s, it was so disappointing to see and feel the tame little waves, the good surf had moved up to Pringle Bay, Betty's Bay area. Great whites can now get much closer to surfers and swimmers without lovely waves keeping them out at a distant backline.
Kiss of fire, no, man, you got it all wrong, or you were not a " proper " surfer. Muizenberg surf works in winter, when the north wind, or north Easter blows. In summer a south wind blows, and the surf is small, we called it slop. You were obviously there in summer, and saw small sloppy waves. In winter, and occasionally in summer you have a north wind. Then the surf is as good as it was in past.
fyi, the roaring forties are not a wind, but a name for the area between latitude 40-50 degrees south, known for consistently
strong winds
