How To Fill Your LAMY Fountain Pen With Cartridges and Bottled Ink

  • Filling a LAMY fountain pen with ink cartridges or bottled ink can take a little getting used to if you're not familiar with how fountain pens work. Here Brian Goulet shows you how to do both of these with LAMY Safari fountain pens. The process is similar with all LAMY pens except the LAMY 2000 (which is piston-filling). LAMY uses proprietary cartridges and converters for their pens, so the specific accessories used here are just for LAMY pens. However, the process is similar for all cartridge and converter filling fountain pens.

    I would like to file a complaint, sir. Ever since I discovered the joy of fountain pens, I've become addicted. Not only have I found enjoyment in the writing experience, but I've re-learned how to appreciate the simpler elements of life and living. I'm very much looking forward to receiving my package next week and have no doubt it will satisfy my expectations. Thank you for the great information, products, and customer service from yourself and the team.

    If you are using a converter: let out a drip or two back into the ink glass and then pull the converter back to add a little air into it. Prevents the pen from burping in the first sessions of using it. Especially if you face a pressure change after inking up. This will protect your shirt pocket :)

    Hey Brian thanks for the Quick Tip(s). Over the years not a big Safari fan, but I have one or two. Always like the way the converter locks in and doesn’t spin loose when filling and that compared to a lot of other brands a Lamy cartridge very likely not to come out by accident. Both of these advantages are for me out weighed by the incredible force needed to install either for one with arthritic hands and fingers. Duh, I never connected that the shipping cardboard ring to meant I could just screw the barrel to puncture the cartridge or seat the converter. My fingers say thanks for a pain free Safari inking future. Never checked the threading possibilities, so thanks for giving me something else to check and obsess about when screwing a Safari barrel back -Nib logo alignment! Ha, Ha I love this hobby always something to learn new. Best Wishes to you and the rest of the Family, don’t forget to get your vaccine as soon as it is available.

    I would like to see a demonstration of how to fill the Lamy 2000. I'm not new to fountain pens and have used them for over 40 years. I have many other piston fill pens, including several Pelikan pens, so I know how to fill any piston filler. However, the Lamy 2000 comes with instructions that are visual only, with no written explanation. Not all users relate to visual printed instructions or even written instructions. I think it would be helpful to people who purchase a Lamy 2000 for the first time to see a video that shows how to fill the pen. Thanks so much for your great videos and awesome pens, inks and paper.

    I would love a video about trouble shooting leaks. My Conklin Duragraph Amber is leaking into the pen body, thinking it is a converter issue maybe? And my Kaweco mint green sport about every third filling pours all the ink into the cap, no idea how to fix since it doesn't happen every time...so I've just kinda stopped using them and I miss them😕. Thanks. Great to see you again. 🤓🌻

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  3 роки тому +2

      I’m sorry to hear that! Hmm...I’ll give that some thought. Leaks can come from so many different causes, which can vary from pen to pen. That’d be tough to cover in a general purpose video, but I’ll think on it. It’s usually the result of an imbalance of air/ink interchange...fountain pens allow air to come in (through the filler hole) at an equal rate to the ink that flows out, and if there’s a leaky converter, a bad converter fit, a crack in the converter or pen somewhere, those would all cause leaks. -Brian G

    A nifty trick for converters of any brand that have an uber smooth grip like this one on the twisty part. I find them very slippery and difficult to operate. Dry hands, maybe? At any rate, a very small rubberband around the converter's grip solves the problem. I use the type you might find in a drugstore for hair that are about a half-inch in diameter.

    Hey dude thanks for the video. My two questions are, firstly I’ve been told not to draw the income through the Nib Specially if you’re using a stainless steel because eventually it will be stained or rusted, how true is this? Secondly use a lot of blue, I purchased a bottle of blue ink and there was just so much feeling and refilling I decided to go back to the cartridge. But I’ve always found with the blue cartridges they’re very scratchy. Is there a way to make the blue cartridges flow a little bit more consistently? Cheers from Australia

    In other videos, (my own experience) FP Scribbers, will detach their Converters , and stick only the converter in the ink well, fill it up fully, then reattach it to the nib section and put it all together. This saves the trouble of having to (5:38) ruin their Barrel section with a strong ink Stains.
    It is easier to clean a Converter than the Pen.

    So I’m new to the whole fountain pen thing and I just ordered this pen , and I also ordered the converter and was going to use it in class for notes am I able to just carry extra converters that are filled with ink to class with me instead of bringing a whole ink well ?

    • @erikw3105
      @erikw3105 Рік тому

      Not converters. They have an open end and would leak everywhere. Cartridges would work better - they are sealed. I use a Lamy Safari in school and have used cartridges and converters with success - just be aware of how full the converter is and you'll be fine. When it's low and you have a moment (outside of class), either refill or change colors

      I'm not entirely sure what you might be talking about, but...
      A lot of people clean out the cartridge and then refill it with a new ink of choice with a syringe.
      Either you let it dry out first and not let the stopper plug the opening or just refill it right away after getting out the dye and most of the water from the cleaning.

    • @Primenumber19
      @Primenumber19 3 роки тому +1

      @@namope359 I mean taking the converter itself and dipping it into the ink and pulling the ink in that way. The syringe method sounds interesting though so thanks for that.

      Its better to fill the capillary things on the feed to do it with the converter on. But I guess there is no issue. Also, when flushing converter helps a lot into cleaning the feed.

      @@Primenumber19 Ah, I see what you mean. I tend to almost always syringe fill since most of my set are cartridge only. Otherwise, I fill by the converter method, but only decanted containers (ink put in a smaller place from the actual bottle). I'll fill the same you're describing for brush pens.

    • @silviaberladski909

      I almost always fill the converter naked directly from the bottle and then install it on the pen. It’s perfectly fine. You sometimes need to wait a bit for the ink to go down to the nib.

    For some strange reason with the cartridge (Lamy T10) the flow stops often. To get some flow back I have to turn the pen to its abnormal use (Nib facing up on paper), write a letter or two, then it comes back to normal use. I have cleaned it totally and still no luck.

    • @Gouletpens
      @Gouletpens  3 роки тому +4

      You can totally do that. The LAMy ink cartridges have great capacity, so if you’re up for syringe filling you can go longer than you would with just a converter. The cartridges are meant to be disposable of course, so they won’t refill forever (they’ll eventually break) but they should last you several fillings. -Brian G

    So, yeah, I really like the crystal inks. They are so damn pretty, but I'm starting to run into a problem...
    The regular, non-crystal™ inks have that little groove/indentation at the bottom of the bottle and you can stick your pen tip in there pretty far, even when the ink levels inside the bottles are low. Ingenious design choice, but the crystal ink bottles don't have that! As pretty as they are from the outside, they fail to give us that easy refill after the ink levels go below half. You gotta tilt it in all sorts of unreasonable ways to get it to suck up any ink and you'll get marked EVERYWHERE!
    I realize, that I may need to use a different method, but it eludes me at the time. Any ideas would be much appreciated! (You know... other than throwing out the regular ink, so I can fill the crystal ink into the better bottle...)

  • @eileenvalachovic9435

    I don't understand why you attach the convertor to the nib when you fill it. I have several Lamy Safari pens as well as some Platinum pens with convertors I don't use any cartridges. I fill the convertor directly from my ink bottles. I have many Noodlers inks, several Platinum inks, and a few other brands. I have been filling my convertor this way for over a year. I did fill a convertor once with the nib attached. It was so much more messy so haven't done that again. I use a tissue to clean the convertor off before I attach it to the nib.
    Other than that, thank you for your useful information.

    • @Gouletpens

      You can totally fill the converter direct from the bottle too! That’s a great way to keep things clean, like you said. There are two reasons why I like doing it the way I show in this video with the converter attached to the grip: 1) you get more ink in the pen. When you fill through the nib/feed, you are not only getting ink into the converter, but into the whole feed, as well, so you get more time before it needs to be refilled, plus the feed is primed and ready to write. 2) attaching the converter gives you more length, so when you need to fill from a partially empty bottle (especially a taller one like Noodler’s, Robert Oster, or Diamine) it’s easier with the grip attached. -Brian G

    • @brianbeckman4982
      @brianbeckman4982 3 роки тому +2

      I do likewise, but for a different reason: when the ink gets low in the bottle, it's impossible to completely submerge the nib and feeder in the ink. I admit that I also use blunt-needle syringes to fill converters, to flush and refill cartridges, and to prime feeders. I'm so cheap I can't even stand myself sometimes :)
